Randy Hamilton has brought so much to The Flood's table in the past dozen years. As the late Joe Dobbs used to say, Randy's bass is “the heartbeat of the band.”In addition, Randy's vocals — whether harmonizing or taking the lead — have become a definitive ingredient in The Flood's sound. And nothing demonstrates that better than a tune from this week's rehearsal, captured in this video by band manager Pamela Bowen.About the SongAs reported earlier, “When You Say Nothing at All,” the 1988 composition by Paul Overstreet and Don Schlitz, has been a hit for no fewer than four times.— Keith Whitley was first to take it to the top of the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart in late 1988. — Then seven years later, Allison Krauss's version was her first solo Top-10 country hit. — A year after that, Irish singer Francis Black made the song her third Irish Top 10 single. — And that brought the song to the attention of Irish pop singer Ronan Keating, whose 1999 version was his first solo single and a No. 1 hit in the United Kingdom, Ireland and New Zealand. But to this day, “When You Say Nothing at All” is always associated first with Keith Whitley. The Ashland, Ky., native's recording entered the Hot Country Singles chart on Sep. 17, 1988, at a modest No. 61. Then it gradually rose to the top, where it stayed for two weeks at the end of the year. “Keith did a great job singin' that song," co-composer Schlitz told author Tom Roland. "He truly sang it from the heart.”When Krauss covered the song with her group Union Station in 1995, it was for a tribute album to Whitley, and suddenly the Overstreet-Schlitz composition was topping the charts again. “A Texas Heroes & Friends Tribute to Randy Travis” has announced additional performers for the upcoming star-studded show at the Texas Trust CU Theatre in Grand Prairie, Texas this Wednesday (Nov. 15). Paul Overstreet, Asleep at the Wheel‘s Ray Benson, Casey Donahew, Pecos & The Rooftop‘s Pecos Hurley, Mike Ryan, Jon Wolfe, Rosie Flores, Waylon Payne, Jolie Holliday and Sonny Burgess have all joined the lineup for the tribute show, which will be filled with many of Travis' 23 No. 1 hits performed live by some of his musical heroes and friends specifically from or greatly associated with the Texas music scene. Texas has been close to Travis' heart since he was a boy, learning about the cowboy lifestyle from his father in rural North Carolina. He always had a special connection with Texas fans and primarily resided in nearby New Mexico in the '90s. In the 2010s, Travis and his wife Mary moved to a ranch in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, where they now call home, and have had a deep rooted relationship with the Lone Star State, its culture and its music ever since. A portion of the proceeds from the evening will be donated to the Randy Travis Foundation. The foundation is focused on stroke and aphasia awareness and supporting music education in schools. Previously announced performers include Clay Walker, Cody Jinks, Joe Nichols, Neal McCoy, War Hippies, Braxton Keith, Jacob Tolliver, Whey Jennings, Casey Chesnutt and Garrett Miles. Also, Travis' original touring band will back all of the artists on some of his most enduring songs.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It had been an unproductive day for songwriters Paul Overstreet and Don Schlitz, and this pair was unaccustomed to dry spells. After all, together and individually, Overstreet and Schlitz had written dozens of Top 10 hits, had won multiple Grammys and each frequently had been named country music's Songwriter of the Year.Still, this day in 1988 was frustrating. Hours of guitar strumming had produced zero new ideas."Then, as we tried to find another way to say nothing, we came up with this song," Overstreet later told author Ace Collins. Soon came the line that would lead to the title: “You say it best when you say nothing at all.”It was something, this particular nothing. Initially, though, Overstreet said, they thought the song was OK, but just… well, nothing special. But that was before the late Keith Whitley heard it. Keith loved it, and, moreover, he was not going to let it get away. Not like the last time. Earlier, Whiley had recorded a different Overstreet-Schlitz creation — “On the Other Hand” — only to watch it become a No. 1 hit for a competing artist, singer Randy Travis. Whitley said he was determined not to let "When You Say Nothing at All" meet the same fate. And it didn't. In fact, to date, “When You Say Nothing at All” has been a hit for four different performers. Whitley, of course, was first to take it to the top of the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart in late 1988. Then seven years later, Allison Krauss's version was her first solo Top-10 country hit. A year after that, Irish singer Francis Black made the song her third Irish Top 10 single. And that brought the song to the attention of Irish pop singer Ronan Keating, whose 1999 version was his first solo single and a No. 1 hit in the United Kingdom, Ireland and New Zealand. But to this day, “When You Say Nothing at All” is always associated first with Whitley. "It's a freak thing," Krauss told The Los Angeles Times in March 1995. "It's kinda ticklin' us all. We haven't had anything really chart before. At all. Isn't it funny, though? We didn't know what's goin' on.... The office said, 'Hey, it's charting,' and we're like, 'Huh?'" The recording was named the Country Music Association's Single of the Year and even hit the big screen when the rendition was used in the 1999 movie “The Other Sister.”(By the way, during the time when Krauss' version was on the charts, Mike Cromwell, production director at Milwaukee's WMIL-FM, concocted a duet merging elements of her version with Whitley's original. This post-mortem "duet" garnered national attention, though it was never released commercially.)Our Take on the TuneDanny and Randy brought us this song just a couple of weeks ago, and in no time it became a rehearsal night favorite. Here's our latest take on the tune, with Randy doing the honors on the vocals and everybody taking turns on the solos.Meanwhile….If this has got you in the mood for more Floody goodness, you can take a spin through other tunes that have visited the band's rehearsal space lately. Corey Layne's East Tennessee roots have greatly influenced his music as a country singer-songwriter. Inspired by his grandfather who had played the Grand Ole Opry, Corey's music is heartfelt and emotional. His work covers the gamut of personal struggle and loss – to finding happiness and love. His original music inspires the listener with the resounding sincerity of his genuine vocals and searing lyrics. #countrymusic #georgejones #georgestrait  Corey first began singing at around age five and writing music as a pre-teen. He has focused on honing his music skills as a writer, singer, and musician for most of his life. By 2003, he won an international singing competition, Teen Talent, which was held at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. In 2010, he began traveling to sing background vocals with several prominent gospel artists, including Eddie James, among others. In 2004, he signed his first record deal with an independent label. While traveling to promote his first album, he hit rock bottom after a near-death experience. He says, “This was the lowest point of my life up until that time.” Corey became singularly focused on his talent as a singer and songwriter - putting to words and music to his real-life experiences.  You can hear some of that story in his single entitled, “Let's Take Tonight.” Corey recently contracted COVID 19, was hospitalized, and was told that he would not survive it. “Though I had a strong faith, it made me question everything. What gave me solace was believing there had to be a purpose in life for God to have given me this talent and the belief that I had something to offer country music fans. As it turns out, it was music that proved to be the most healing medicine of all.” Corey has just released his latest single, “Searchlight,” and his new album, ‘Bend-or-Break ‘ He recently made his national television debut on the popular RFD Network show, ‘Larry's Country Diner.'LISTEN ON SPOTIFY“Corey's vocals and songwriting are authentic and pure, a singers singer. A dedicated team member at Farmhouse Restaurant and Tennessee FFA member, Matthew also served his community as a volunteer firefighter with Etowah Rescue Squad and Rural Fire Department.

What happens when a Rock Star is contacted asking to help with a charity event? Colleen Lloy gives you the Rock Star point of view. What makes a Rock Star want to agree to work with a charity?  Conversation Highlights:  {01:00} Introduction to Colleen Lloy.  [03:27} The process of deciding if you will work with a charity.  {05:42} The impact of having a son who served in the army and unfortunately, he came back with PTSD.  {07:19} The reason Colleen has a very specific interest in the American Heart Association.  {16:59} Words of encouragement to someone looking to do get into maybe a different business or a different way of life. {20:32} Stories of pranksters from the road.  {24:52} The hypnotherapy and the transformational therapy that Colleen uses.   Remarkable quotes:  I got into hypnotherapy trying to help veterans with PTSD.   I use my intuition and see whether what they're saying they need from me resonates.  I am absolutely certain that every human being on the planet has gifts that they want to share.   I am excited every time and I sing like there are millions of people. I give everything I have every single night.   Resources:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/colleen-lloy-698ab1182/  https://youtu.be/p0scCpN84EM colleenlloy@gmail.com  Bio: Colleen Lloy Although her name is not yet a household word, chances are if you've spent any time in the Sacramento area or Nashville, you have heard of Colleen Lloy. She has been performing for many years in all the local "hot spots". Lloy also has been recognized for her dynamic performance during the annual California State Fair. No matter where you may have heard this lady, you can bet she has a voice you will never forget.   This native Sacramentan's first recording was a song “Sooner or Later” which was the number 2 song on an album for a charity, “MADD” (Mother's Against Drunk Drivers). Critic Mick Martin wrote: “The most impressive of these is Colleen Lloy whose “Sooner or Later” is an absolute knockout. If this fine singer isn't signed by a major label, there's no justice in the music world.” This recording brought attention to City Kidd's manager who asked Lloy to join the Band City Kidd and played with the original members now known as Tesla.   Lloy over her musical career has entered and won many music competitions one of which was the Jimmy Dean/True Value Hardware Music Competition where she won first place in Northern California which ultimately brought her to Tennessee.   Lloy, an award-winning singer/songwriter fell in love with the musical city and decided to move to Nashville, TN to pursue her singing and songwriting career in 1999. Like many artists, she has a story of courage and stamina where she quit her job, sold everything she owned, and on a wing and prayer moved to Nashville. It did not take long for the industry to realize this lady has major chemistry and charisma on and off stage. Coined the “chameleon” by many, she proves she has an unusual style of singing able to cover any type of music with ease.  She also has appearances on the popular television show “Nashville” as an extra until she can set more time aside for other roles.   2000 was a difficult year for Lloy who lost her brother. She went into the studio and recorded “Life Challenges” and released the song “Can You Hear” to the radio. It charted 26 on the Christian Country Music Charts and is receiving great airplay in many countries.   Decatur Celebration- "The best description of Colleen Lloy is a chameleon." Sacramento critic, Mick Martin writes: "The most impressive of these is Colleen Lloy whose "Sooner or Later" is an absolute knockout. If this fine singer isn't signed by a major label, there's no justice in the music world." Nashville Music Guide Critic Brad Fisher gives Lloy's "Life Challenges" CD a five-star rating and writes: "This ten-song CD is an emotional roller coaster that runs the gambit of love. The tunes were either written or co-written by Lloy who has a beautiful set of pipes which she shows off on this album."   Lloy has devoted her life in giving back to worthy causes that touch her soul. Some of those include the American Red Cross, Susan G. Komen for the Cure to name a few. She is also an advocate of our U.S Military and veterans and has written several military songs to share with the soldiers and their families.    Lloy has literally played all over the U.S. and abroad and returned from two USO shows in Italy. She is a frequent guest at the nationally known Bluebird Café, has done television and radio broadcasts and has opened up for artists like Billy Dean, Paul Overstreet, John Berry, Lee Greenwood, George Jones, Billy Ray Cyrus, Tanya Tucker, John Anderson and many others. Lloy had the rare privilege of interviewing Mr. B.B. King for a proposed television show which she indicates is the highlight of her music career thus far. Lloy recently returned from Maui performing with Mick Fleetwood.    In any event, whether you see her on a big stage or a small quiet room tucked away in her favorite clubs, we are quite sure you have not heard the last from Colleen Lloy. Much of his success came in the country world with singles such as Rascal Flatts’ Top 10 hit “While You Loved Me,” Carrie Underwood’s “Songs Like This,” Kenny Chesney’s multi-week #1 hit “Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven,” Charlie Worsham’s debut single “Could It Be,” Blake Shelton’s “Doing it to Country Songs.” and two Billy Currington chart-toppers, “Must Be Doin’ Something’ Right” and “Let Me Down Easy.” Never one to limit himself to a single genre, Marty has also collaborated with Tom Higgenson of the rock band Plain White T’s, which recorded two of his songs, and has had his compositions recorded by everyone from Joe Cocker, who had an international #1 with Marty’s “Fire It Up,” to Cho Yong Pil, a South Korean superstar who had a multi-week #1 with Marty’s song “Bounce.” In addition to his writing, Marty is the co-founder of Songtown, a creative community of aspiring writers that provides blog posts, webinars, podcasts, and even books, including two co-authored by Marty: Song Building: Mastering Lyric Writing, and The Songwriter’s Guide to Mastering Co-Writing.

Skip Bowersox on Nehemiah 8. Here is what Skip said before Sunday, "Church on the Rockers, When I think about my own funeral, I imagine it would go something like this: I'd like to be cremated and have my ashes kept in one of my five-gallon buckets. As attendees walk through the door, everyone gets a Bowersox Tile t-shirt. My wife has already told me that she will likely not attend. I believe this is because she will be too overcome with grief, though I suspect the real reason is this will be her first opportunity to clear the kitchen counter of all my paperwork and whatnot. After the service, we'll all meet at the homestead where Alan and Linda will provide burgers, and Pam and Dwayne will provide Cocoa Pebbles. We'll gather around the campfire as Robert Tonner leads us in a sing-along of Paul Overstreet’s greatest hits. The only piece I don't have figured out is who will speak. I would like Aaron Weisser to share, but he will likely be too choked up (you know how he gets). Scott Fraley could share some funny stories about selling encyclopedias. That really has nothing to do with me, but it’s always fun to hear. We could just do an open mic as long as you guys promise not to let my brother-in-law, Josiah Fisher, have a turn. Unfortunately, our best option for speaker at my funeral would be the dead guy in the bucket. I know exactly what passage I would share. I know exactly what message I would give. If I were preaching at my own funeral, I would turn to the passage that has most clearly defined the gospel in my own experience. Ironically enough, this very gospel passage is found in the Old Testament. Since I can't preach it at my own funeral, I decided to beat the rush and preach on Nehemiah 8 this Sunday. No need to bring flowers. Skip"

This week we're featuring the follow-up to one of the biggest selling albums of the 80s: Randy Travis' "Old 8x10" (1988). It was of course the answer to "Always & Forever", which sold five million copies and hatched four number ones - it was always going to be a hard act to follow. However, "Old 8x10" certainly did well.. three number ones and two million in sales - Randy got a pay day, don't worry about that. There was a continuation of style too - lots of pedal steel, dobro and fiddle all sit wonderfully around Randy Travis' most unique of vocals. Paul Overstreet and Don Schlitz (the duo that brought us "Forever And Ever, Amen") are back with country's answer to "River Deep, Mountain High" in "Deeper Than The Holler"; "Written In Stone" must've been considered at thousands of weddings; the playful "Is It Still Over?" and "We Ain't Out Of Love Yet" add some pace, but the real gem for this reviewer is the stripped-back final track of the album. "Promises" is reduced to almost just a guitar and that smooth baritone and remains one of the most emotional entries in Travis' back-catalogue. Sensational album.

I was the last child and only girl born to the greatest parents, Dave and Joanne, and best older brothers, Jeff and Greg. I grew up on a hobby farm in the community of Dawson Creek, British Columbia. I began singing in church when I was 3, learned to play guitar when I was 12, and then began my curiosity with writing songs. I was obsessed with all things music and spent my entire childhood determined to be a star. However, in my senior year in high school, I received a scholarship to attend UNBC, which meant putting my move to Nashville on hold. I toughed out the 4 years of school to get my nursing degree, all while writing, touring, and making trips to Nashville. But when I got my degree in the mail showing I was an RN, I packed my bags. October 4, 2010, I loaded up my Honda Civic and headed south. I started knocking on doors, playing open mics and writers nights 7 nights a week. I wrote with anyone and everyone who would write with a green writer new to Music City. After a year and a half of persistence, one big door opened. Erv Woolsey (who manages my hero, George Strait), signed me as an artist/writer to his management/publishing company. After 2 years of honing my writing skills and getting my artist career on track, I was dropped and found myself knocking on doors once again. The office of legendary Hall of Fame songwriter, Harlan Howard, opened their doors and hearts to me. I played my entire catalog to the amazement of Harlan's widow, Melanie Howard, and she darn near signed me on the spot. In the year and a half that I have been a staff writer at Harlan Howard Songs, I have written over 200 songs with Music Row veterans like Craig Wiseman, Liz Rose, Paul Overstreet, and Stephony Smith, to name a few. In May 2016, in the midst of my long hunt to find the perfect producer to capture my quirky country style, Nashville's finest producer, Chuck Ainlay, came into my life. I invited him to come see me perform at the Bluebird Cafe and much to my surprise, he showed up. We had a meeting a few days later and decided this was exactly what we both needed and put the plan in motion. July came around and I found myself at the prestigious Sound Stage Studio on Music Row, recording my EP with the A-Team of studio musicians. Now here I am, starting a wild year, listening to my completed project. I am so proud of this EP and all the incredible people who contributed their time and talents to make it possible. I hope to be coming to your town and playing these songs for you live. I also hope to meet you, get a picture with you, and give you a hug, because it's people like you who make this all worthwhile. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. See you soon!
