“One of the things we talked a lot about in the room is that very rarely do people set about their day saying, ‘Okay, I'm going to go do some evil.' But for most people, we're all sort of the leads in our own stories and we're all crafting the narrative of who we want the world to see us as. And we do start to believe that. You tell yourself these stories about yourself that you want to be true and you move through the world and you make decisions based on that narrative. And I think that one of the things that as writers, we really try to do is get into the shoes and the heads of the characters that we're writing and really try to break down why they're doing what they're doing and make it feel as real and true as possible. The things that these characters believe – or convince themselves that they believe – have to feel really real and grounded to us,” says Katie Robbins, co-showrunner of Good American Family, on writing flawed characters who prefer to live in fantasy, not reality.  On today's episode of Write On, we speak to Katie Robbins and Sarah Sutherland, co-showrunners on the explosive limited series, Good American Family. The show tells the story of a midwestern couple who adopts what they believe is little girl with dwarfism. Soon they are in the midst of a battle fought in the tabloids, the courtroom and ultimately their marriage. The show is based on the real-life story of Natalia Grace that made many headlines. Robbins and Sutherland talk about the unusual yet brilliant structure of telling various episodes from different characters' points of view, and how the tone changed when they got to the episodes told from Natalia's perspective. They also talked about the messiness of writing a dysfunctional family while still keeping the story grounded.  “We all know family is this wonderful, beautiful thing, but it's so complex. And I think that it's really hard to talk about the complexities of family because we're afraid to undermine the sacredness of it. It's my view that if we are actually more open about what is hard about coexisting as a unit who loves each other, but also what's not perfect, it would make us all better. And I think that that's true both for family but also even for our enemies. We're not writing autobiographies, but I think that we take those very real emotional experiences that we all have and then put them into a story that is cinematic, that is more interesting than our lives, but that is deeply steeped in those real moments of heartache and joy and confusion,” says Sutherland.  To learn more, listen to the podcast but be aware there are SPOILERS ahead.

“It's the Hair – not the Hat That Makes a Woman Attractive,” read one ad for the Seven Sutherland Sisters' scalp cleaner. Sisters Sarah, Victoria, Isabella, Grace, Naomi, Dora, and Mary Sutherland were performers who sang and played instruments, but what the crowds came to see was their hair; primarily because there was, collectively, 37 feet of it. By 1880, they were billed as the "Seven Wonders" – and just four years later, their patent hair tonic had made them a fortune. This is a Victorian rags-to-riches story. Well, it's more of a rags-to-riches-to-rags story. As it goes.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sarah Sutherland from CanLII joins us this week to talk about her new book, Legal Data and Information in Practice: How Data and the Law Interact. We have a fun and informative discussion about how the legal industry, ranging from courts, firms, law schools and start-ups are leveraging data within their organizations and how new technologies are allowing us to do amazing things with data that we could only dream about a few short years ago. While many of us in the law understand the messiness of the data we produce and collect, however Sutherland points out that there are many industries where the data is messy, and they are using that data to increase the value of the services they provide. That being said, there are still a number of ways in which we create and collect data that need improvement to support current and potential uses. Leveraging data in better ways helps the legal industry across the spectrum. Whether that is the large law firms assisting global corporations, or helping individuals with access to justice needs. Sutherland's hope is that a legal industry that has better structure data results in better outcomes for everyone needing legal services. Sarah recently wrote about a hypothetical law firm where she quantified the value of improved information and data. Information Inspirations A recent leak of confidential court records in California from Tyler Technologies, Inc.'s Odyssey Case Management System is having a wider affect that the court initially thought. It turned out that third party data collection also gained access to the information, including attorney disciplinary records and juvenile records. In addition, no one is really certain if the leak was limited to just the California courts. Lex Machina and LexisNexis recently released their latest Law Firms Activity Report, which surveys the most active law firms in federal district court. You know what we are missing? One of the ways we, as the people of God, can stimulate and encourage one another is by sharing stories of God's faithfulness. Sarah Sutherland, a member of Oakridge Bible Chapel, shares some of what God has been teaching her over the past few years, months, and through various trials. Episode 57 - A Few Words with Jill C. Baker  The springboard for this episode with author, Jill. C. Baker, was her Sutherland Series books, each of which is centered (according to Jill's website http://jillcbakerauthor.com/) "around the family of Sarah Sutherland - an average woman, a working mom, someone not too different from most of us - other than in her ability to transcend time."  In this conversation, we talk about what has gone into the writing of these books - characterized, again, according to Jill's website, as "historical fiction with a touch of paranormal" - as well as the marketing of them, including the use of social media. Jill takes us behind-the-scenes of her publishing process, sharing a number of great tips and anecdotes that will interest anyone who wants to see their own book to fruition. She also talks candidly about how much she has learned herself as a new author and the unique challenges of promoting her own work.  Later in our chat, we are joined by our mutual friend, Scott Myles, who has a lot to say about what Jill has written so far as a reader and, yes, fan. Thanks, Scott, for adding so many good points to our discussion, including a number of tips and suggestions for increasing Jill's book sales.  And, of course, thank you, Jill!  I know both Jill and Scott, by the way, from a networking group I co-founded in Sudbury (MA) nearly eight years ago with Phil Hollows called the Sudbury Social Tweetup, a monthly event for those interested in social media and marketing.
