Everything old is new again...or young again? We're talking about New Adult romance today, that is, romance novels where the love story is set at or during college! We're hopping in the time machine and headed a generation or two back in romance to talk about the first time New Adult came around changing the contemporary romance game. We're getting to the bottom of why these particular love stories work so well when it comes to feelings, and asking that eternal question -- has anyone involved in this subgenre actually met a 19 year old man? (JK, we support you!) We're taking next week off, but we'll be back the week after for the start of our Seventh Season! If you'd like more romance chatter in the meantime, we encourage you to join our patreon, where you get another episode from us each month, and access to the incredible readers and listeners and brilliant people on the Fated Mates discord! Support us and learn more at fatedmates.net/patreon.Our first read along of Season 7 will be Molly O'Keefe's Everything I Left Unsaid duology, selected by Jen which despite the first book being a cliffhanger should not surprise you because she contains multitudes. A rockin' conversation with Professor Batygin about his perspectives on modern cosmology, how paradigms shift, and what the field looks like at the very horizon. We want to know - what are the roads to forming new planets? What about stars? What about heavy elements? This is another piece of the "why is this happening" puzzle, where we attempt to understand how and why certain ideas in science appear unchallengeable, in service of slowly helping the paradigm shift. A HUGE thanks to all our new patrons this month, and for everyone that's been with us since the very beginning. We love that you help us keep this project growing, and are excited for the future. My guest in this episode is the one the only Konstantin Batygin. He is a musician and astronomer whose day job is as a professor of Planetary Sciences and Orbital Mechanics at Caltech. Yes, that means if the sitcom The Big Bang Theory were real, he would have an office in the same department as Sheldon. As an astronomer, his research mostly focuses on the formation and evolution of planetary systems. He is most famous for his research with Michael E. Brown on the proposed existence of a ninth planet in the Solar System. Brown and Batygin are using various methods to search for a massive planetary body they believe is in the outer solar system. Before we get into all the nerdy planetary stuff, we talk about Batygin's upbringing in Japan and Santa Cruz. How he discovered Metallica and the guitar. His early attempts at punk bands and the new albums he is working on with his current band The Seventh Season. In this conversation, we talk about music, planetary science, and how they recently came together when Batygin helped compose the guitar elements of a symphony dedicated to his planet nine research with the Miami symphony. From power cords to planetary orbital mechanics this is one of my favorite interviews. If you dig what I am doing don't forget to Like, Rate, and Subscribe to Postcards. We had the pleasure of interviewing David Cook over Zoom video! David Cook (and yes, he is the winner of American Idol’s Seventh Season) certainly knows his way around a good song. His first album, Analog Heart, came out pre-Idol, and his last album, Digital Vein, nicely book-ended that chapter of Cook’s career. With Chromance (2018), he started fresh. “I was a ‘rock’ guy, but the further away I’ve gotten from that, the more I’ve opened up and found inspiration in the peripherals. I wouldn’t have had the courage earlier in my career, but now I have the confidence to go after the sound I want.”A fan of both Massive Attack and Nine Inch Nails, Cook always admired how they pushed the envelope and brought pop elements into rock music. “I used them as a bedrock for this EP and how I wanted the record to feel.” If putting out his 2018 EP wasn’t enough to keep Cook busy, that same year he headed to the Great White Way for his Broadway debut in “Kinky Boots” as Charlie Price. “I’ve had conversations about finding creative outlets outside of being a musician, but the timing was never right.” While Cook is excited for his first starring role, he’s also aware of how timely and relevant the message behind KINKY BOOTS is right now. “I am honored I am going to be part of this show and get to work with so many amazing people. I love the collaborative aspect of theatre too, the idea of being part of a creative team and working it out in front of an audience each night.”Another passion of Cook’s is his work with ABC2, a Washington DC-based nonprofit that drives cutting edge research and treatments for brain cancer and brain tumors. “I’ve been very involved with the charity ABC2 and am very grateful that my career has allowed me to do that. I lost my brother Adam to a brain tumor in 2009; every year I am part of the Race for Hope-DC and my fans alone have raised over 1 million dollars for this charity. Far and away, that is the proudest of all my achievements.”Being good for music is something David Cook has strived for ever since he left college to make performing his full-time career. He is well aware, and grateful, for the breaks American Idol has brought his way, and for the opportunities, he continues to have. He has no plans to slow it down. “I love creative endeavors. I like starting with nothing and then finishing with something that didn’t exist before. That’s my favorite thing about creating new music. I love being able to put something artistic out in the world for people to enjoy.”We want to hear from you! State of the Federation. The United Federation of Planets is a great place to live, find a career, and raise a family. However, during the time of the NCC-1701-D and NCC-1701-E, there were major crises that affected the life of Federation citizens. Star Trek The Next Generation is a Starfleet-centered show, but the missions of the U.S.S. Enterprise impacted those working outside of Starfleet, from the events of "Conspiracy," to the strategic threat posed by the reemergence of the Romulan Empire ("The Neutral Zone"), to the fateful attacks on Earth by the Borg ("The Best of Both Worlds, Parts 1 and 2"/Star Trek: First Contact). Daniel, Darren, and Phillip explore what these impacts, what we wish we could have seen about the political and social life of Federation citizens, and inadvertently uncover the greatest Starfleet conspiracy since Lieutenant Commander Remmick's slug exploded. So get your favorite drink from the replicator, stop reading your copy of "Utopia," and join Earl Grey as they discuss life in the United Federation of Planets.HostsDaniel Proulx, Phillip Gilfus, & Darren MoserEditor / ProducerDarren Moser Production Manager Richard Marquez Content Coordinator Will Nguyen ChaptersCitizens of the Federation (00:04:09) Vanilla State (2364-65, First Season) (0019:44) 2365, Second Season (00:29:24) 2366, Third Season (00:32:49) 2367, Fourth Season (00:41:02) 2368 Fifth Season (00:46:08) 2369 Sixth Season (00:47:39) 2370 Seventh Season (00:52:10) The Picard Conspiracy (00:53:20) Closing Thoughts (1:00:30) Send us your feedback!
