Be Wary of Hypocrisy Brandon Rodriguez Jesus dealt repeatedly with hypocrisy because it matters deeply. You know the feeling when someone tells you they will do something and then does the opposite. We resent it in others, and when we catch ourselves doing it, we feel convicted. Jesus addressed this issue with the Pharisees, the lawyers, and even His own disciples because hypocrisy is like leaven in bread. It starts small, grows, and spreads throughout everything until you cannot separate it from who you are. God sees what is hidden. He knows the difference between what we appear to be and who we actually are. The good news is that if you are worried about your own hypocrisy, if you are convicted about living one way in public and another in private, that conviction itself means your heart has not been hardened to God. There is forgiveness available through Jesus Christ.So I am asking you today to examine your life. Are you more concerned with seeming faithful than being faithful? Do people know you follow Jesus by how you live? Will your private life support your public testimony? Instead of fearing what people think, fear the Holy God who alone has authority over your eternal judgment. Yet do not live in terror. God cares for you more than the sparrows of the field. He knows every hair on your head. Confess Jesus before others. Live boldly for Him. Do not deny Him through your actions or your silence. And when you stumble, when you fall short, know that the Holy Spirit empowers you, teaches you, and advocates for you. That same Spirit who transformed Peter from a denier into a bold proclaimer lives in you. Turn to Jesus today, repent, believe, and He will transform you into a new creation.

One of the most effective ways to enhance the security of your accounts - financial and non-financial - is to follow and maintain healthy password habits. Here are a few tips that can help you secure your accounts and help protect your personal information.  Create Strong and Unique Passwords A strong password is your first line of defense against cyber threats. Follow these guidelines in creating a robust password:  Length Matters: Aim for at least 12 characters. Longer passwords can be harder to crack.  Mix It Up: Use a combination of upper-case and lower-case letters, numbers, and special characters.  Avoid Common Words: Steer clear of easily guessable words and phrases like "password," "123456," “Aa123456”, "qwerty" or any combination of these. Other common passwords include “admin”, “P@ssw0rd” and all ones or all zeros.  Unique to Each Account: Use different passwords for different accounts. This way, if one password is compromised, your other accounts remain secure.  Use a Password Manager Remembering multiple complex passwords can be challenging. A password manager can help you store and manage your passwords securely. These tools can generate strong passwords for you and automatically populate them when needed so that you don't have to remember each one. Remember to do your homework before you trust a third-party password manager application.  Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Multi-Factor Authentication, sometimes referred to as Two-Factor Authentication or 2FA, adds an extra layer of security by requiring two or more verification methods to access your account. This could be something you know (password), in combination with something you have (a smartphone or security token), or something you are (fingerprint or facial recognition). Enabling MFA can significantly reduce the risk of unauthorized access to your account by validating your identity through more than one authentication method when you log in.  Regularly Update Your Passwords Changing your passwords periodically is a good security practice. Aim to update your passwords every three to six months. Regular updates can help protect your accounts from the impact of data breaches, if your username and password are ever compromised. If you receive a notification that your information could have been compromised, that's also a good reminder to update your passwords.  Be Wary of Phishing Scams Phishing scams are fraudulent attempts to obtain your personal information by pretending to be a trustworthy entity. Be cautious of emails, messages, or websites that ask for your password or other sensitive information. Always verify the source before providing any details. By staying aware, you can avoid unwittingly providing your password (and access to your accounts) to scammers or identity thieves.    At TCU your security is our top priority. While cybersecurity threats are constantly evolving, remember that a strong password is your first line of defense. Stay vigilant and proactive in protecting your personal and financial information.  Regularly checking your account activity can help you spot any unusual transactions or unauthorized access early. I fly a lot, as you might have guessed if you read my blog regularly. In 2025, I've been on 56 United planes as I write this, with about 10 left to go before the end of the year. One of the things United does is sometimes send out a quick "survey" after a flight, checking to see if everything went smoothly. I don't always fill these out, but recently I decided to give some feedback as I had a great experience. I really wanted to just complement the onboard crew, but the survey was quite a few pages (10?) and a lot of questions. I started to try and fill it out, but lost focus after a few pages. This felt like a chore, and I started to just randomly click some of the selections asking me to rate things 1-10. I wasn't really rating the items; I was trying to get done. Eventually, I bailed on the survey and didn't complete it, but that got me thinking about the data from these surveys. Read the rest of Be Wary of Data

As summer holiday season gets into full swing and the hunt for the best deals ramps up, FraudSMART is issuing a timely reminder: be vigilant against a seasonal rise in travel scams. FraudSMART, the fraud awareness initiative developed by Banking & Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI), warns that these scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated, with fraudsters capitalising on the demand for last-minute getaways, particularly touting 'recent cancellations' or 'limited time offers' at heavily discounted rates. Holidaymakers are being lured in with these tempting offers and discounts, often through fake websites, online ads and social media links. To help consumers navigate online travel bookings safely, FraudSMART is urging every holidaymaker to utilise a free tool available on the FraudSMART website: Scamchecker.ie. This essential resource allows you to quickly verify the legitimacy of any website or link before making a booking, acting as your crucial first line of defence against online fraud. FRAUDSMART'S TOP TIPS FOR A SECURE SUMMER: Book Smart: Always use trusted and well-known booking websites or travel agents. Verify before you buy! Before you commit, check the link on Scamchecker.ie. This free tool is your essential safeguard against fake websites and fraudulent offers. Be Wary of Unsolicited Offers: Exercise caution with unsolicited emails or social media ads offering cheap holiday deals. Always verify special offers by visiting the official website of the travel company, rather than clicking on embedded links in an email or advert. Avoid Bank Transfers: Avoid making payments through bank transfers, as these are difficult to trace and recover. Use secure Wi-Fi: Do not use unsecured or public Wi-Fi networks when making payments; switch to 3G/4G on your phone if necessary. Keep Records: Print or save a copy of your order and purchase details. Update Security: Ensure your computer's security is up to date with reliable antivirus and browser software. Protect Your Card: Keep your card in your sights and protect your PIN - never share or write down your PIN details. Niamh Davenport, Head of Financial Crime at BPFI and lead for the FraudSMART campaign, said: "As people across Ireland plan last-minute getaways, fraudsters are working just as hard to take advantage of the holiday rush. These scams can be incredibly convincing and come from multiple sources including fake and copycat websites, convincing online adverts and social media posts. However, once payment is made - often by bank transfer - the so-called agent or website disappears, leaving victims without a booking and out of pocket. Some victims may even receive a fake booking confirmation, only to discover the scam after they have travelled to the destination and find the property doesn't exist when they arrive." Ms Davenport added: "However, there are a number of red flags to look out for, such as being asked to pay by bank transfer or being pressurised to act quickly. Our Scamchecker.ie tool gives consumers a simple, effective, and free way to double-check the legitimacy of a website or link before making a booking. If you pause before you pay, and use Scamchecker.ie, it can be the difference between the holiday of a lifetime or a holiday disaster and significant financial loss." FraudSMART is encouraging holidaymakers to make Scamchecker.ie the first stop before booking any holiday deal online. If you suspect you have been scammed, contact your bank immediately and report the incident to the Gardaí. On this week's mini-episode, I'd like to challenge you to get your students set up on Canva and help them get comfortable on the platform with a simple assignment that will give you a great fall display, literary travel posters. Have you seen PBS' The Great Read posters, which are available for free download on the PBS site? I'll link them in the show notes. They're fabulous. Each poster invites the viewer into a literary world. “Join Don Quixote on an Epic Quest” is overlaid on a lovely background of receding windmills with a small warning note, “Be Wary of Hulking Giants.” “Visit Wonderland” is fixed above a drawing of Alice falling down between purple mushrooms, with the catchy tagline, “See as many as six impossible things before breakfast!” The series includes Dune, Narnia, Harry Potter, 1984, Huck Finn, Gatsby, and more. They're stellar additions to your classroom decor, for sure, but they also lend themselves beautifully as visual mentor texts for this little project. Ask students to choose a book that's been meaningful to them in the past, one with a richly imagined setting. Show them the PBS posters and ask them what components seem consistent across the posters. Ask them to consider which posters they find most appealing and why, then use similar components in designing their own, on Canva.  If you're new to Canva, I'm going to link a free step-by-step course I made for you so you can easily learn the basics that will help you and your students with a project like this.  Starting with a simple project like this one is a great way to get everyone oriented onto the platform and help students warm up to design work, at the same time that you create a fun book-focused set of posters you can use on your door, in your hallway, or around your classroom library.  OK, that's a wrap on today's quick episode. Choose Organic and Natural Fibers: Look for clothing made from organic cotton, linen, and hemp. These materials are generally grown and processed without harmful pesticides and chemicals. Organic certification labels, such as the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), can be a reliable indicator of this. 2. Avoid Synthetic Fibers: Synthetic fibers like polyester, nylon, and acrylic are petroleum-based and often treated with various chemicals during production. These can include harmful dyes, flame retardants, and other toxic substances. Most “vegan leather” contains very toxic PVC or PUC, one plastic-free plant based leather that Alden recommends researching is called Mirum. 3. Check for Certifications: Certifications like GOTS, OEKO-TEX Standard 100, and Bluesign ensure that clothing is made without harmful chemicals. These certifications cover various aspects of textile production, from raw material extraction to the finished product. ToxicFreeFuture.org is another group Alden mentioned as a resource that tests products and urges legislators to mandate transparency in materials and chemicals. 4. Be Wary of Certain Treatments and Applications: Avoid clothing with features like wrinkle resistance, static resistance, and stain resistance, as these often involve the use of chemicals. Also, be cautious of overly bright or unnatural-looking colors, which can be a sign of heavy dye use. 5. Research Brands: Support brands that are transparent about their manufacturing processes and committed to reducing chemical use. Many eco-friendly brands prioritize non-toxic production methods and are open about their supply chains. 6. Wash New Clothes Before Wearing: New clothing can have surface chemicals or residues from the manufacturing process. Washing them before wearing can help reduce your exposure to these chemicals. 7. Use Gentle, Eco-Friendly Laundry Products: The detergents and fabric softeners you use can also contribute to chemical exposure. Choose products that are eco-friendly and free from harsh chemicals. 8. Practice Minimalism in Your Wardrobe: By buying fewer but higher quality items that are made sustainably, you can reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals and also contribute to a more sustainable fashion industry. 9. Speak Up: Ask retailers and manufacturers about their standards and materials. Over time, the market reflects what we ask for as well as what we refuse to buy. Ask your legislators what they are doing to make clothing safer and to require transparency of the chemicals workers and wearers are exposed to.
