Join Dr. Brumbaugh and the Children's Colorado ID Team on May 13 at 6 p.m. MST for the next COVID-19 Provider Town Hall, featuring live Q&A, Register now: https://bit.ly/2RoiezA It has been almost a month since Pfizer requested to expand use of its COVID-19 vaccine to adolescents ages 12 to 15. The request asks the Food and Drug Administration to amend their vaccine’s emergency use authorization, which the FDA originally granted late last year for people ages 16 and up. Meanwhile, our colleagues in Michigan are seeing record numbers of hospitalized pediatric patients, creating a greater sense of anticipation and urgency for the vaccine’s approval down to age 12. In this episode we will delve into vaccines, variants, schools and more as we examine the latest impacts the pandemic has had on pediatrics. Today we are fortunate to be joined once again by un-official Charting Pediatrics co-host, Dr. Sam Dominguez. And not only is Sam with us, but we have the expertise of returning Infectious Diseases experts Dr. Sean O’Leary and Dr. Jessica Cataldi. For those of you who don’t know, Children’s Colorado has hosted virtual COVID-19 Town Halls for pediatricians since March 2020 – these Town Halls have been anchored and fueled by the expertise of Sam, Sean & Jess and we are exceptionally fortunate to be joined by all of them on the podcast today. I welcome Sean O’Leary, Senior Researcher with the Ohio River Valley Institute. We’re going to be talking about ORVI’s new report, “Appalachia’s Natural Gas Counties: The Natural Gas Fracking Boom and Appalachia’s Lost Economic Decade.” The report examines 22 counties in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia at the center of Appalachia’s natural gas boom. While the boom did wonders for the national GDP and fossil fuel companies bottom lines, those 22 counties did significantly worse. The promises of an economic rebirth for these economically strapped regions never came to pass. The Ohio River Valley Institute is an independent, nonprofit research and communications center—a think tank—founded in 2020 and based in Johnstown, PA. The Institute equips the region’s residents and decision-makers with the policy research and practical tools needed to advance long-term solutions to some of Appalachia’s most significant challenges. Their work includes in-depth research, commentary, and analysis, delivered online, by email, and in-person to policy champions, emerging leaders, and a range of community partners. And, they just released another report last week, “The Failure of Fossil Fuel Subsidies in Pennsylvania.” Looks like I’ll be reaching out again for a future Out d’Coup LIVE! O’Leary is a native of Wheeling, West Virginia and has written about coal, natural gas, and their role in the economies of Appalachia in a book, a newspaper column, and blog titled, “The State of My State”. Previously, Sean served as communications director at the NW Energy Coalition in Seattle, Washington. He is also a playwright who has won numerous awards presented by the National Endowment for The Arts, the National Arts Club, and the West Virginia Commission on the Arts among others. A special shout out to Jonathan Mann who wrote our intro song, “There Are No People in the Future.” Check out all is great stuff on his YouTube page and follow him on Twitter @songadaymann

New studies from Germany, Norway and the U.S. offer yet more data to show that childcare facilities and elementary schools should remain open or re-open to full-time, in-person learning as quickly as possible. Despite these research findings, schools across the US have largely been closed to in-person learning since the pandemic reached critical mass in the U.S. in March 2020. On today’s episode, we are going to talk through these recent studies and the advocacy needed to support the re-opening of schools to full-time, in-person learning. https://www.eurosurveillance.org/content/10.2807/1560-7917.ES.2020.26.1.2002011 https://www.nejm.org/doi/10.1056/NEJMc2026670 https://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/early/2021/01/06/peds.2020-048090 Today we are joined by returning guest Dr. Sean O’Leary, an Infectious Disease physician at Children’s Colorado and Director of the Colorado Pediatric Practice-Based Research Network. Joined by guest Sean O'Leary, the fourth episode of Blow The Whistle was an uppity one as the guys discussed the Giants splitting its season-opening series against the Dodgers, Alyssa Nakken making history by taking the field as the first female coach in MLB history and Gabe Kapler taking a knee during the national anthem (7:18). O'Leary chatted about the likelihood some more prospects come up to The Show for San Francisco as well as expectations for the Giants and A's the rest of the way (15:29). They then chopped it up about the NFC West, as they torched the Seahawks for a head-scratching move to trade for Jamal Adams (25:02) and had harsh words for Jimmy Garoppolo critics (33:05). Finally, they wrapped up the show highlighting what they were looking forward to as the 49ers enter training camp and went in on the NBA media with their Worst Take this week.
What do pediatricians think about kids going back to school in the fall? The American Academy of Pediatrics made headlines last week with a call to put kids back in physical classrooms, if at all possible. Dr. Sean O'Leary helped write the guidelines, and he told the New York Times that we've learned enough since March to make adjustments to school environments: "Schools can do a lot of things to really make the environment as safe as possible." We talk to local doctors about how best to support kids this fall, no matter what decisions the state or districts make. Dr. Stephen Cook , M.D., associate professor of pediatrics and internal medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center, and medical director at the New York State Department of Health Dr. Elizabeth Murray , M.D., associate professor of pediatrics and emergency medicine at Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong Dr. David Topa , M.D., pediatrician at Pittsford Pediatric Associates
In this our 16th COVID-19 podcast, we will delve into the return to school guidance that both Children’s Hospital Colorado and the American Academy of Pediatrics have released and talk about how pediatricians can be advocates for the safe return to in-person learning in their communities. When schools across the United States halted in-person learning because of COVID-19 this Spring, many of us never predicted that students would remain in a remote learning status for the remainder of the school year. As school districts and teachers worked tirelessly to utilize all resources at their disposal, it became apparent that virtual learning was not an ideal education setting. From the lack of learning equity and access to critical services for many students to mental health impacts, many educators and pediatricians began talking about the importance of in-person learning resuming in some fashion for fall 2020. Today we are joined by returning guest Sean O’Leary, MD. Sean is an infectious disease physician at Children’s Colorado and Director of the Colorado Pediatric Practice-Based Research Network. And we are happy to welcome Heidi Baskfield, JD to the podcast. Heidi is a lawyer by training and the Vice President of Population Health and Advocacy at Children's Hospital Colorado.
