Full Hour | In today's third hour, Dom welcomes legendary broadcaster Angelo Cataldi back onto the Dom Giordano Program to help us comprehend the abysmal collapse of our Philadelphia Eagles after their 32-9 loss against Tampa Bay in the Wildcard Round of the NFL Playoffs. Cataldi, author of the great LOUD: How a Shy Nerd Came to Philadelphia and Turned Up the Volume in the Most Passionate Sports City in America, tells how the City is feeling, explaining that he's heard non-stop demands for the firing of head coach Nick Sirianni, which he wholeheartedly supports after the show of incompetency by the coaching staff. Then, after playing Dom's Money Melody, Dom returns to the topic of national politics after yesterday's Iowa caucus, explaining why Trump continues to prevail as the conservative leaders, and asking what kind of hats he could introduce in Pennsylvania to drive votership. For over three decades, Angelo Cataldi was the on-air voice of Philadelphia sports fans, leading the charge with unabashed zeal and infectious energy. He was the maestro of the mania, the conductor of the symphony of vitriol that blared through car radios every morning in the most misunderstood yet passionate sports city in America. It made him his share of enemies, but he walked away from the microphone with enough stories for several lifetimes-or one jam-packed, lively memoir. LOUD is an exuberant chronicle of Cataldi's life, from his childhood as a self-described "king nerd" to the traditional newspaper career he left behind, and his eventual rise to the top of the Philadelphia sports radio scene on WIP. Through it all, Cataldi remained dedicated to his mission of talking about what the city was talking about, in the same tone. And that tone was loud, passionate, and unapologetically real. Full of encounters with athletes, personalities, and power brokers as well as candid reflections, LOUD is a must-read for the die-hard sports fan and anyone who appreciates a good story.

On this episode of the SeventySix Capital Sports Leadership Show, Wayne Kimmel's guest is Angelo Cataldi, former sports radio personality and author of Loud: How a Shy Nerd Came to Philadelphia and Turned Up the Volume in the Most Passionate Sports City in America. Cataldi's journey to the microphone began in 1977 with a pen as a writer for the Providence Journal and later for the Philadelphia Inquirer throughout the 1980s. Here, he had the privilege of crafting narratives that captured the essence of the games we all love. Fast forward to 1990, when a new chapter unfolded as Angelo took the reins as a talk show host on the iconic 94 WIP Sportsradio, a platform that would become his stage for the foreseeable future. For over thirty years, Cataldi proudly occupied the airwaves as the unmistakable voice of 94 WIP Sportsradio, which ultimately shaped his identity as “Mr. Philadelphia's Sports Talk Radio.” With a voice that could rattle the very foundations of Veterans Stadium and Lincoln Financial Field, he brought passionate discussions, expert analysis, and unfiltered opinions to the ears of countless listeners. It was during these broadcasts Angelo became a voice not just in the city but in the hearts of sports enthusiasts far and wide. Outside the studio, Cataldi embraced his role as a husband and family man. Moving from the charming shores of Rhode Island, Angelo and his brood found a new home in the heart of Philadelphia. His journey has seen him through the highs and lows of life, including a divorce that reshaped his path and a remarriage that brought him a sense of completeness. Cataldi is a true Philadelphia loyalist, passionately supporting all four of the city's beloved sports teams. Although he could commandeer any press box, he often chose the comfort of his home, where Angelo watched more sports on TV than he attended in person. With a keen eye for the game and an insatiable appetite for the latest scores and strategies, Cataldi reveled in the thrill of competition from the comfort of his living room. From 1988-2023, Angelo Cataldi was the host of the WIP Morning Show. He retired in Spring 2023. His show was an instant hit and maintained popularity throughout his tenure. Cataldi never shied away from controversy, and would criticize anyone in the Philadelphia sports market that he felt warranted it. Cataldi was joined on the radio show by Al Morganti, and later by Rhea Hughes and former NHL player turned broadcaster Keith Jones, who was recently hired as President of the Philadelphia Flyers. In this episode, Cataldi talked about his major criticism over the years. He explained his issues with former Eagles head coach Andy Reid and former Philadelphia Phillies manager Gabe Kapler. Cataldi is writing a new memoir, entitled “Loud,” due out in November 2023. He talked about the creation of the Wing Bowl, his trip to the NFL Draft with Eagles' fans who were shocked that the team selected Donovan McNabb over Ricky Williams. He also addressed the proposed new arena for the Philadelphia 76ers. From 2008-2011, Angelo had Seth Everett on his show weekly to talk about the Phillies and Major League Baseball. This podcast opens with a clip from July 2010 on WIP, when Seth's then 2-year-old daughter made her debut appearance on Philadelphia radio.

Angelo Cataldi became Philadelphia's most popular sports radio personality by giving voice to the joys and frustrations of Philadelphia sports fans. And, along the way, he even saved a life or two -- literally. But his show was also criticized for being homophobic and misogynistic, and an event he founded, "Wing Bowl," eventually became a drunken public party that many Philadelphians despised. Today, we trace Cataldi's unlikely rise to radio stardom, and the complicated legacy he leaves behind.Guest: John GonzalezSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
