A very interesting podcast this week. Our good friend Tory Brecht joins us to talk about his recent columns on Iowa basketball and the lack of fan support. What are the root causes to the lack of support and what can be done to fix it? We have a lot of different theories. We dive into what we like about this Iowa basketball team and some of the very positive comments from Stephen Bardo this week about how connected this team is on the court in their play. We also discuss what record it would take for the Hawkeyes to reach the NCAA Tournament? Then we turn our attention to the never ending search for a new offensive coordinator. After not landing on Paul Chryst or Joe Philbin, who might Kirk Ferentz be looking at? Could he be eyeing an NFL coach? Does Kirk's past hires tell us the type of person that he will likely end up hiring? Finally we discuss the football coaching news of the day, rewarding the great Phil Parker and keeping a rising star in Seth Wallace on the coaching staff.
Interview with Seth Wallace and More
This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette Digital News Desk, and I'm here with your update for Wednesday, March 1.The first day of March will feel like spring is coming soon, but we'll see what happens. According to the National Weather Service the day will start mostly cloudy in the Cedar Rapids area, before becoming gradually sunnier. The high is predicted to be near 53 degrees with a low of around 30 degrees. It could be a bit breezy, with the wind increasing during the day, but wind gusts will not exceed 25 mph.Two women were found dead Tuesday morning after deputies responded to reports of a shooting at a home on Jordans Grove Road, west of Springville, according to the Linn County Sheriff's Office.Deputies were called at 9:28 a.m. to the house at 2561 Jordans Grove Rd., where they found two adult women dead from gunshot wounds. A witness was interviewed at the scene, and the Sheriffs Office said “there is no danger to the public.”The Sheriff's Office did not say what led to the shooting and did not announce that any arrests had been made in relation to it.The names of the deceased have not been released yet, pending notification of family. Both bodies have been transported to the State Medical Examiner's Office in Ankeny for autopsies.Fifty years after Iowa began collecting and analyzing data on residents diagnosed with cancer through its Iowa Cancer Registry, statistics reveal Iowa has the second-highest cancer incidence rate in the nation and is the only state with a rising rate of cancer.Kentucky has the highest cancer rate, lining up with its high smoking rate, while Iowa has a high rate of just about every major cancer type across the board. As the Iowa Cancer Registry celebrates its 50th anniversary, the 2023 report notes the spike in cases is tied, in part, to Iowa's aging population, “as advancing age is the leading risk factor for cancer.”The rise in cases also ties to Iowa's larger population — growing from 2.9 million in 1973 to 3.2 this year — and the improvement and corresponding increase in cancer detection among Iowans. The study also notes body mass index, inadequate physical activity, binge drinking and smoking as risk factors. The former Hawkeye football players who in 2020 sued the University of Iowa athletics operation for racial discrimination and harassment have dropped their claims against head coach Kirk Ferentz, offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz, Athletic Director Gary Barta and former strength coach Chris Doyle. Those dismissals leave the university and the state Board of Regents as the only defendants in the federal case, which last week also dropped claims against linebackers coach Seth Wallace. The case had been set for a jury trial in May 2023, but a U.S. District Court judge earlier this month postponed a pretrial conference and trial until further notice “in light of pending motions in this case.”The former players — Akrum Wadley, Jonathan Parker, Marcel Joly, Aaron Mends, Darian Cooper, Brandon Simon, Javon Foy and several others later removed from the lawsuit — sued the Hawkeye football program and its coaches in November 2020 following outcry from former players on social media and years of internal and external investigations into accusations of discrimination.
Our summer coaches series continues with a visit from Iowa's associate defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Seth Wallace. We discuss his journey in coaching and ending up in this profession as the son of a coach and his playing career at Coe. How he ended up connecting with Norm Parker, which led to being a […]
Abortions would be illegal in Iowa once a fetal heartbeat can be detected under a pair of requests Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds said Tuesday she plans to submit to Iowa courts. The Republican governor announced that, in the wake of last week's U.S. Supreme Court ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade, she will ask the Iowa Supreme Court to rehear a recent case on abortion regulations so the state court can establish what legal standards can be applied to abortion restrictions in Iowa. And Reynolds said she will ask the state courts to lift an injunction on the so-called “fetal heartbeat” law that was passed in 2018 but immediately stopped by the courts. For now, abortion remains legal in Iowa until 20 weeks of pregnancy. According to Gazette reporting, members who currently serve on Iowa's Board of Regents have made monetary and in-kind political donations totaling nearly $339,500 since 2019 — primarily to Republicans, with the majority going either to Gov. Kim Reynolds, who makes appointments to the board, or to the Republican Party of Iowa. Iowa Code requires the nine-member board governing the state's public universities to have gender and political balance, meaning it can't have more than five members of the same gender or political party. The current board includes five women and four men, with five reporting Republican affiliation, three identifying as independent and one, Nancy Dunkel, marked a Democrat. JC Risewick, appointed last week. has given Reynolds almost $60,000 since 2020 — $40,000 of which were in-kind donations in the form of flights. State law doesn't restrict or regulate regent political giving. Neither does regent policy, although it does cover potential conflicts of interest with the universities themselves. University of Iowa Athletics must turn over all materials former players have requested from an “independent and external review” of the Hawkeye football program — including reports on specific coaches — despite UI assertions the records are subject to “attorney-client privilege” and should be private. Former Hawkeye football players are suing the University of Iowa and some athletics staffers for racially motivated discrimination and harassment. The UI in early 2020 hired a law firm Husch Blackwell to investigate the football program's culture after numerous former players went public with allegations of racism and discrimination — leading to the university's $1.3 million separation deal with former strength coach, Chris Doyle. As part of its review, the law firm interviewed current and former players and employees and produced a report confirming the program “perpetuated racial or cultural biases and diminished the value of cultural diversity.” Documents the players in the lawsuit want include Doyle's performance evaluations and Husch Blackwell personnel reports on Coach Kirk Ferentz, assistant coaches Brian Ferentz and Seth Wallace, and Doyle.
In this episode we debrief potentially the most out of bounds DHT episode we have ever recorded, We talk media availability from the Iowa Football coaches including Phil Parker, Seth Wallace, and Kelvin Bell. We give our thoughts on what the coaches had to say about Spring Ball so far and what that means moving forward. We discuss McAfee at WrestleMania living the absolute dream, and this weeks flavors of Crumbl Cookies. We get into a long conversation about The Masters, The Champions Dinner, Wagyu beef, and more. We also discuss a merch cannon for the Spring game and some other dumb shit per usual.

Will Michael Myslinski end up at Iowa? Can Iowa basketball win all or most of its games? Is this Iowa's best football recruiting class on paper? Will Kevin Warren be fired? Who replaces Seth Wallace as linebackers coach if he leaves after the season?
We had some fits and starts, but thanks to Iowa linebackers coach and assistant defensive coordinator Seth Wallace for joining the #oniowapod. Of course, we talked about his group of linebackers for 2020. Along those lines, look for Nick Niemann getting a shot at an inside linebacker spot. The outside linebacker probably will be manned more in 2020 by someone who might play inside linebacker, but that’s a wait-and-see. Wallace said it’s tough to advertise outside linebacker when it’s a 20-percent of the time kind of position. We talked about Wallace’s big break in coaching. During his time at Lake Forest, Wallace met Chuck Bullough, of the Michigan State Bulloughs. That Michigan State connection led to a chance to interview with Norm Parker, another Michigan State coach who, of course you know, was Kirk Ferentz’s defensive coordinator from 1999-2011. We touched on a ton. Want to thank coach Wallace for his time. Scott and I talked about the NFL Draft and the Hawkeyes. OK, there was a short Packers rant. Sorry, but you knew that was coming. We also talked about football's possible return. Continue to keep an eye on what colleges are saying about returning in the fall. We also took a ton of Twitter questions. We don’t know who’ll end up with No. 0, but it was nice having dialogue with you again. Stay smart, stay safe, maybe we’ll have football at some point.
The Force discusses Iowa's 20-0 victory over Northwestern on Oct. 26, along with media availability with defensive line coach Kelvin Bell, linebackers coach Seth Wallace, running backs coach Derrick Foster, and wide receivers coach Kelton Copeland. The staff also talks about what the Hawkeyes will need to do to win the Big Ten West, and it gives its ideas for sponsorships for Iowa's student-athletes.
The Des Moines Register's Chad Leistikow and Mark Emmert join Ross Peterson as they break down the Iowa loss vs Penn State and talk about personnel issues and break down the problems in the offensive line which they feel was the biggest reason for the loss. They also look ahead to possible Bowl locations and even carve out a path to the Big Ten Western Division Championship. The guys ponder if predictability is too big of an issue and go over the last time they even attempted an onside kick before Linebackers Coach Seth Wallace joins for an interview as they discuss among other things how the 3rd Down Defense let the team down against Penn State and Michigan before the guys preview and predict the game against Purdue.

Impromptu #oniowapod. Scott and I were going to cover a meeting at Iowa today, but the early morning practice was more than enough Iowa City driving for me and here we are with a podcast. I didn’t think you’d mind. At the top, we ask how much 4-2-5, X-and-O football talk do you want? We could do that all damn day, but we also want to have listeners. That stuff isn’t for everybody. We’ll always do some, but let us know if your eyes are rolling back in your heads. Football had events since our last podcast. We talked about what we learned from linebackers coach Seth Wallace and defensive line coach Kelvin Bell. How the 4-2-5 defense, which was the first personnel group on the field during the open of Thursday’s practice, has become a thing for the Hawkeyes. Iowa’s defense has reached the point where breaking the mold is being embraced. We did get to see about 20 minutes of Thursday’s practice. There were no major revelations, but it’s always good to see and hear – yes, hear – football (it and hockey are the best sounding sports). We fielded a lot of Amani Jones questions. He definitely has moved from inside linebacker to defensive end (edge defender or just “edge”). He is 5-11. Iowa has two players with major impact potential already on the edge with A.J. Epenesa and Chauncey Golston. The best question here is how many snaps? A novelty amount or can Jones work his way into the rotation? It’s taken me some time to reach this conclusion, but is Iowa the favorite in the Big Ten West right now? Discuss that. We did. Thanks for listening to the #oniowapod. It’s one of my favorite parts of the week.
Today on the Eye on NY podcast: Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a "red flag" law that will provide a mechanism for removing guns from individuals deemed to be a risk to themselves or others. He was joined by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The House passed a pair of gun safety measures this week. State Sen. Joe Griffo is pushing a bill that would change the construct of the state Senate. Instead of districts that contain multiple counties, each of New York's 62 counties would have one state senator. State Sen. Cathy Young announced this week that she is resigning to take a job with Cornell. Some pundits think it's because Young, as a Republican, is now in the minority. But there's another (possible) explanation. Finally, an interview with Seth Wallace, the editor at the Palladium-Times in Oswego. Seth joined me to discuss what's happening in Oswego County, the county's congressional representatives and the state of journalism.
