Shawn Luchtel's shed season looks a little different from the average whitetail hunter's. The founder of Heartland Bowhunter, who consistently puts mature bucks on the ground, almost exclusively searches for sheds on his private hunting land in Missouri. Generally, Luchtel will wait until March—when just about all bucks have dropped their antlers—to scour the 1,500-2,000 acres he shed hunts. “The majority of March I spend shed hunting, and then...

Being able to recover quickly from these major disappointments is important so that the next opportunity can be taken advantage of. In this episode, Nick and The Doctor are joined by Heartland Bowhunter co-owner and personality Shawn Luchtel about the matter of missing and what he does to refocus after it happens. He also shares his pre-shot routine that helps him control adrenaline and improve his chances of hitting the mark. Shawn drew a great Iowa tag in 2020 filled it on an awesome public land Iowa 8 point! We run through the story of this hunt from getting the tag and getting some scouting trips planned to the actual day to day of the hunt. Even though it was Iowa, Shawn ran into some heavy pressure on the different public pieces and it was great to hear the story of how he overcame it and was able to fill the tag. Where have all the turkeys gone?! It's a common question we've been hearing through much of the United States and it's a very complex answer. We decided to check in this week with some of the most popular hunters in Missouri who have hunted here for many years to see what trends they've witnessed and things they're doing to help improve turkey numbers. Mark Drury of Drury Outdoors has been at the top of our list for successful turkey hunters for a long time. Going back to the days when Adam filmed for Drury Outdoors he's always respected the passion Mark has for the wild turkey. MArk continues to have a successful spring even with numbers down statewide, so we're getting to the bottom of why? Next up Michael Hunsucker and Shawn Luchtel from Heartland Bowhunter have seen a drastic difference in turkey numbers from the early 2000s and it's quite concerning to them. We discuss what they believe might be leading into the numbers decline and how they're managing their farms to help both deer and turkeys. Regardless, we all have ideas at how we can help the turkeys, from lowering tags offered, to ending the fall turkey season to year round trapping of predators, but getting the Department of Conservation to make the first move will be the trickiest move yet. #forloveoftheland Land & Legacy is Powered by Simplecast

Eric Chesser (@gethushin), Ben Dettamanti (@ShedCrazy), Shawn Luchtel and Michael Hunsucker (@heartlandbowhunter) joined us in this East vs. West episode all about shed hunting. We break down what shed hunting actually is, why people do it, how they do it, what they do with the antlers, how it plays into their hunting strategy and many other little nuances of this off-season pastime from the perspective of two Utah shed huntin' fools as well as two heartland whitetail hunters that have hunted sheds in their own area for many years as well. Hard to believe we could talk about bones falling off deer and elk's heads for almost an hour but this one is packed with information all about sheds and antlers with a super fun group to talk to. Here's hoping you can make it out in your area, whether on your own piece of private or on some public to find a few sheds of your own this year! In this episode hosts, Jess DeLorenzo & Jake Latendresse will sit down with the OG’s of Heartland Bowhunter on the show: Michael Hunsucker and Shawn Luchtel . In our eyes, Heartland Bowhunter completely changed the way hunting shows were produced and edited. They took it to the next level and started a creative trend that brought art and creativity to the storyline of hunting, that will forever be engraved into the stone of outdoor visual production.
Episode 9 - Heartland Bowhunter’s Shawn Luchtel and Mike Hunsucker On today’s episode of Talking Mule Deer, Steve and Jodi talk to MDF partners Heartland Bowhunter. Shawn Luchtel and Mike Hunsucker let us know how they got their start archery hunting in Missouri but how the fever for hunting western mule deer and black-tailed deer took hold with them. They provide some tips on things they’ve learned adapting from whitetail hunting to spot and stalk hunting in the open country of the West. We talk about some of the gear that’s necessary for western hunting that eastern and midwestern hunters might not consider and the importance of advanced preparation. Mike and Shawn also talk about how telling the story of the entire experience of hunting and conservation is a fundamental part of the production of their television show and why they have established a relationship with the Mule Deer Foundation to share the conservation message.

With the warmer temps and Spring rains, things are really starting to liven up out there. Spring greenup is here for most of us sotherners, but some of our northerly friends just can't see to share winter with this most recent dump of snow. Do not fear my friends. Warm temps are on the horizon! The Spring, or often refered to as "the offseason", for Whitetail hunters means a few things. One of which is habitat improvements. Specifically, burning is one of the great tools we have in wildlife management and habitat manipulation. We really wanted to talk to someone who knows thier stuff when it comes to fire, so we called up Shawn Luchtel of Heartland Bowhunter. The Fellas at HB are straight up producing some of the best outdoor media content out there, killing giant bucks, as well being great stewards of the land. Shawn has really ramped up his research and learning of fire in the past few years and he was more than willing to share some of that knowledge with us. In the intro we recap our expedition to the Llano river in search of the Texas State Fish, The Guadalupe Bass. It was a crazy fast trip with some intense moments and a lot of good times. We caught up with some old friends, Shawn Luchtel and Michael Hunsucker from Heartland Bowhunter in this show. They appeared originally on the Big Buck Deer Hunting Podcast in Show #062 on August 30, 2014. Time flies. Managing a farm in Northern Missouri is a full time job as creating a better habitat for wild grasses and wild game is never ending. Food plots were once the focus, but now Shawn and Michael have added prescribed burns and timber management to the overall land management strategy. Since junior high, Shawn Luchtel and Michael Hunsucker have been together, hunting the heartland, in Missouri. Now, along with a few other core hunter, they've formed the hunting group known as Heartland Bowhunter. They have successfully turned a childhood passion into a full time profession, hunting. Their filming techniques are particularly honed, maybe even more so than their hunting skills. Their hunting and filming skills were so good that it landed them a spot on the Outdoor channel and have a Facebook follow that exceeds 200,000. Not bad for for a bunch of guys and gals that just love hunting. Nate Flynn joins us from the bass boat too!
