Hey Rokcast world! it's a good day when we can defeat one of the biggest threats mounted against the North American Wildlife Conservation model in decades. Colorado Voters recently defeated Colorado Proposition 127 which would have taken management of Colorado's mountain lions, bobcats--and potentially all huntable species--out of the hands of wildlife biologists. It was a big win for hunters. The defeat of Colorado Proposition 127 was led in part by Dan Gates of the CRWM here, among others. Dan was a frequent guest on the Rokcast here Podcast Archives - Rokslide during the last year, helping hunters understand what was at stake if Proposition 127 would've passed. Today we host Dan again to tell us how we won, and what the future holds if we want to ensure sound wildlife management continues in the USA. Besides a big thanks to some of the industry names that came together like HOWL, Steve Rinella/Meateater Randy Newburg, GoHunt, Cam Hanes, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Derek Wolf, Jason Matzinger, the Mule Deer Foundation and many others, we want to thank some of the Rokslide members who helped out too. From money donated, to time spent, to talking to non-hunters, here are just a few (there were many more) of the Rokslide members who helped defeat Colorado Proposition 127: Corbland Bluumoon gburk Ucsdryder wyogoat LFC911 Nicaburns sndmn11 BTLowry Poser sodaksooner h2so4 Turkeygetpwnd38 ElDiablito Thanks to these and all these Rokslide members who helped defeat this major threat to scientifically based wildlife management. You can view just a few of the many threads created by members on the Rokslide forum here Please continue to support C.R.W.M. here as there are already more battles to win. With it's rise in popularity in the hunting world, there comes the need for more education and information about its resources and the Mule Deer Foundation is doing just that with some exciting new projects and collaborations about mule deer in Oklahoma. Taylor took a hard look at himself and decided rather than just complain, he'd get his hands dirty helping mule deer where he can. Once he made the decision, the door flew wide open and soon he was co-chair of Idaho's Wood River Chapter of the Mule Deer Foundation, along with Ross Baker. This week on the Montana Outdoor Podcast you host Downrigger Dale talks to the Regional Director of the Montana Mule Deer Foundation, Chris Fortune. Rigger and Chris got into a fascinating and at times alarming discussion about the decline of the Mule Deer population in Montana. They cover all kinds of reasons that are contributing to this decline like; the loss of key Mule Deer habitat, the number of CWD cases that have been hitting the population, and the growing population of the Mule Deer's predators. Now many of you may be thinking it's the wolf and yes wolves do prey on Mule Deer no doubt, however they tend to focus more on other prey. Director Fortune explains that it is really a couple of other predators that have been doing more damage than the wolf. Which ones are those? Listen now to find out. In fact, Rigger found it interesting that one predator has been kind of flying under the radar since the wolf has been in the spotlight. Rigger also asked Chris about possible solutions to the issues affecting our Mule Deer and what the Mule Deer Foundation is trying to do about all this. This podcast will likely surprise you a great deal as it clears up a lot of misconceptions about the problems facing the Mule Deer. Spoiler Alert: CWD is not the biggest problem! The feral horses are growing in numbers each year and the head count exceeds over 400 animals.  The habitat degradation that they have caused is severe and removal is the only means of rebuilding these areas for all wildlife.   READ THE FOREST SERVICE STATEMENTS HERE READ FAQ's HERE   GROUPS IN SUPPORT OF THE HUMANE REMOVAL OF FERAL HORSES: The Arizona Sportsmen For Wildlife Conservation, The Center For Biological Diversity, Arizona Wildlife Federation, Anglers United, AZ Antelope Foundation, AZ Bass Nation, AZ Big Game Super Raffle, AZ Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, AZ Chapter of Safari Club International, AZ Council of Trout Unlimited, AZ Deer Association, AZ Desert Bighorn Sheep Society, AZ Elk Society, AZ Flycasters Club, AZ Houndsmen's Association, AZ Outdoor Adventures, AZ Outdoor Sports, AZ Predator Callers, AZ State Chapter of National Wild Turkey Federation, Ben Avery Clay Busters, Christian Hunters of America, Diablo Trust, Maricopa Audubon Society, Mogollon Sporting Association, Mule Deer Foundation, No Excuse Hunting and Outdoors, Outdoor Experience 4 All, Southern AZ Quail Forever, Southwest Wildlife Foundation, SRT Outdoors, The Bass Federation of AZ. Spring brings the chance to get back into the field looking for shed antlers and Jason describes how he uses shed hunting as a way to scout and learn about behavior. But we also talk about how spending time out on winter range when the deer and elk are already stressed from a tough winter can be a significant challenge for their survival. Some states have created shed hunting seasons or set restrictions on when people can get into the winter range, but personal ethics and awareness of the stress it can cause are critical. Jason gives us some tips about what he does in the off season to get ready for the next hunting season, and he tells the story about how a nice buck gave him and his son the slip this past season. We then talk a bit about how hunting with our kids and beginning hunters becomes a new motivation after years of hunting. We wrap up hearing about what projects Jason has on the horizon, his role in helping Conservation Continue at MDF, and what some of those conservation efforts are looking like in the coming year.

State of MDF with President/CEO Miles Moretti – Season 3 Episode 7 – April 16 Today Steve and Jodi are talking with Miles Moretti, President/CEO of the Mule Deer Foundation (from the safety of our homes in three states). While we always try and do a “State of the Organization” interview with Miles, this one is particularly important as MDF grapples along with the rest of the world with how to function in the “new normal” created by the COVID-19 pandemic. The stay-at-home orders around the country fell in the heart of our normal banquet fundraising time and, like so many others, the potential loss of income is daunting. Miles tells us about how most chapters are working to reschedule these banquets and we hear about how Conservation Continues at MDF  with the support of partners Henry Repeating Arms, Reeds Family Outfitters, PhoneSkope and Pyro Putty who are matching donations to the organization through the end of April. We also talk about other ways to support the organization, including the Ultimate Giveaway Raffle, hunting tags being auctioned online at OnlineHuntingAuctions.com, firearm online auctions at GunBroker.com, membership renewals, and Amazon Smile. We also remind members that, while getting in the outdoors is a great way to stay active during the shutdown, it’s important to stay local and practice #ResponsibleRecreation and follow CDC recommendations in order to avoid spreading the virus into small communities. After recognizing our current realities, we talk about what MDF accomplished in 2019 for mule deer conservation and what is on the horizon, even amidst the current situation. We wrap up talking about Miles’ legacy with the organization with his pending retirement on September 30.

Jim tells us about the three research priority projects collaring deer to learn more about migration patterns associated with highway development and learning the movements of a herd in a known high elevation summer range. We wrap up with talking about how habitat improvements are making a huge impact on herd health which has been shown by GPS movement data showing use of restored habitats and avoidance of areas that weren’t treated.

Butch served in Iraq and Afghanistan flying Army Attack helicopters and he and his junior officer Josh Cleghorn would spend down time dreaming about being back in the U.S. hunting. Their vision was to spiral the features and functions of special operations apparel into the civilian hunting world. He tells us how they put together their business concept which really took off due to a Department of Defense solicitation for a new camo pattern. He tells about the selection process DoD took and how well the upstart Kryptek camo did being down-selected as one of four companies alongside three multi-billion-dollar companies. Kryptek’s performance apparel, using this highly-tested camo pattern, taps into both tactical and mountaineering design making it incredibly functional in the hunting application. Butch tells us more about some of the other branding opportunities the company has had through video games, movies and limited licensing through other lifestyle brands. When all is said and done, Butch’s favorite hunt is for mule deer because of his memories of growing up hunting mule deer with his family in Idaho. Mule Deer Foundation – Past, Present, & Future Over twenty years ago, the concept of giving something back to mule deer was a dream of Emmett Burroughs. As Emmett traveled around the country hunting and filming mule deer, he realized that many of us take this awesome species for granted. Think about what the world was like in 1988. Mule deer had been extremely abundant right up until the winters of 1983-84. Across the West, the record snowfall lingered long into spring and early summer. Many mule deer and black-tailed deer perished, mostly starving for lack of food covered by snow and from cold temperatures. A few years later, Emmett observed that mule deer populations had not rebounded from this die-off. Many factors contributed to mule deer not coming back – loss of habitat, predators, poaching, highways crossing through the middle of transitional ranges, and subdivisions being built on winter ranges. State wildlife agencies were busy trying to grow more elk and dealing with endangered species issues. On top of that, funding to state wildlife agencies was in decline. Mule deer management, which had been a staple of most fish and wildlife agencies, was taken for granted. It was as if mule deer, which were at one time the premier big game species, were no longer worthy of prominence. Emmett gathered together a few of his close friends and acquaintances and asked them to think back at how much they had taken mule deer for granted. He challenged them with the famous words, “We must give something back to mule deer and black-tailed deer.” In July 1988, the Mule Deer Foundation was incorporated as a 501(c)3 wildlife conservation organization. Founded in Redding, California, the original Board of Directors developed the mission statement of MDF, “The mission of the Mule Deer Foundation is to ensure the conservation of mule deer, black-tailed deer and their habitat.” As with many wildlife conservation organizations, MDF started having banquet fundraising events to raise money for projects benefiting mule deer. TAGNBRAG – Tag N’ Brag started as a notebook of ideas created by David and Dean Giarrizzo while they were in college at Ohio State University. They wanted to create a place where all hunters and fishermen/women could connect, share experiences, and exploit themselves as outdoorsmen/women. In the fall throughout their college careers, David and Dean would spend countless hours in the car going to and from school to the hunting grounds. They even scheduled classes on the same days as each other so they would have opposite days off to go hunt. Much of the time spent in the car and some in class was focused on jotting down ideas and creating the vision for Tag N’ Brag. In December 2011, they launched the first version of www.tag-n-brag.com. In less than two years they have turned the outdoor social network into a brand recognized throughout our industry. www.tag-n-brag.com is going to re-launch a new custom designed website at the end of November. We now have an iOS and Android phone application, our own blog, and our own web show on tag-n-brag.tv. We have great plans of expanding the Tag N’ Brag brand even further and look forward to connecting hunters and fishermen/women worldwide. Own The Season TV – Art Helin of Dodgeville, Wisconsin, began hunting over 30 years ago under the instruction of his father and grandmother. What started as small game and deer hunting in his home state grew to an obsession to hunt nearly every big game species across North America. Raised in a hunting and fishing family, Michelle began hunting with Art at the age of sixteen and they married three years later. Art’s hunting success and passion for teaching others has led to his pro/field staffer positions for various manufacturers since 1996. Together with his wife, Michelle, and the staff of Art Helin Outdoors, he promotes these companies and the great outdoors by working trade shows, attending retail store events, and providing in-store training to their employees. Starting in 1998, Art began giving seminars to small audiences for Primos. Since then, he’s traveled across the country speaking at venues large and small, from local sporting clubs to Bass Pro Shops/Cabela’s, the Iowa Deer Classic, and the Field & Stream/Outdoor Life Deer and Turkey Expos. When speaking with people, Art draws upon his own past experience, successes and failures, as well as the over 150 days per year in the field hunting, guiding, and scouting. Michelle joined the seminar circuit in 2013, speaking on safety, first aid, and CPR for the outdoors. After having planted food plots, practicing woodland management, and completing timber stand improvement and pond projects on his own 40 acres, leases, and properties of friends and neighbors for eighteen years, Art started habitat consultation services in 2015. Art and his wife, Michelle, are experienced in videography, having filmed for Archer’s Choice Media Productions and the Double Bull Archery video series starting in 1998. They launched their own show, Own the Season, in 2019.

Hardy Face Paint – Meet the owners of Hardy FacePaint Hello. We are Brian and Mariah Hardy, creators of HARDY FACEPAINT and avid, responsible hunters just like you. Brian had always used face masks, preferring the convenience of masks to the mess and trouble of paint. However, all of that changed the first time Brian went bowhunting in Kansas, the ultimate whitetail hunting state. As a big buck came into his line of sight, Brian drew back on his bow only to have his facemask catch on his release! There was nothing for him to do except draw down and watch as the buck of a lifetime walk away. Determined to never experience a facemask mishap like this again, Brian purchased every face paint product on the market. No matter what he tried, the paint ended up feeling greasy, messy, and itchy. Some of the products smelled like crayons. As any good bowhunter will tell you, it is imperative to be scent- free on the hunt. Mariah had never liked face masks as they would constantly ride up on her face and hindered her shooting. However, as someone with sensitive skin, she didn’t have the option of using harsh and irritating face paints. Not only that, Mariah is also a safe cosmetic advocate who lives a wholefood and organic lifestyle, so the toxic and harmful ingredients of face paint were not only impractical for her, but also in conflict with her values. Brian and Mariah became increasingly frustrated trying to find a camouflage face paint that was not only made with quality ingredients, but was also effective, safe, gentle, and easy to both apply and remove. After exhausting all of the existing options, they decided to take matters into their own hands. They left no detail unconsidered when creating HARDY FACEPAINT. They thought about what hunting face paint would ideally look, smell, and feel like. They researched ingredients, safety, and effectiveness, as well as ease of application and removal. They essentially dreamed up a hunter’s perfect face paint and engineered HARDY FACEPAINT to be exactly that. IBO – The International Bowhunting Organization (IBO) was created in 1984 by a dedicated group of bowhunters who shared the desire to ensure that bowhunting and the ideals of wildlife conservation survive, expand and flourish to be shared, enjoyed and passed on to future generations. By its charter, the International Bowhunting Organization’s purpose is “To promote, encourage, and foster the sport of bowhunting; further bowhunter education; act as a political coordinator and liaison for the protection and advancement of bowhunting; function as a clearinghouse for essential bowhunter information; and adhere to the basic ideal of the unification of bowhunters.” Soon after its inception, the IBO launched the Triple Crown of Bowhunting, consisting of three national tournaments hosted in separate states. Utilizing identical rules and classes, the Triple Crown culminates with the crowning of national champions of various age, gender, and equipment classes. The series continues to expand each year and has become the undisputed indicator of the best individual performers and equipment in the sport of 3-D archery and bowhunting. In 1989, the IBO established a series of sanctioned tournaments worldwide in which participants may qualify to compete in an annual finale to be held in a large and accommodating, destination-type venue. Presently, hundreds of local and regional bowhunting clubs host qualifying events for the opportunity to participate in 3D Archery’s largest and most prestigious event, The IBO World Championship. National Deer Alliance – NDA’s Initiative The mission of the National Deer Alliance (NDA) is to serve as the guardian of wild deer conservation (white-tailed deer, mule deer, black-tailed deer, Coues deer, and Key deer), and our hunting heritage. Formally incorporated in May 2015, the NDA is driven to assemble and unite a diverse group of stakeholders that includes hunters, managers, and the hunting industry to help create positive outcomes for deer and deer hunting. A strong board of directors that represents organizations and groups such as the Mule Deer Foundation, Quality Deer Management Association, Whitetails Unlimited, Archery Trade Association, National Shooting Sports Foundation, Wildlife Management Institute, Vista Outdoor, and Bass Pro Shops, leads NDA. The Need – Deer are the most commonly pursued and economically important game animal in North America. Despite the fact that 83% of the more than 14,000,000 hunters in the United States identified as deer hunters, there was no national organization geared toward protecting the interests of all deer hunters and the deer hunting industry before the formation of NDA. Amazingly, less than 1% of deer hunters belong to a national conservation organization dedicated to the protection of deer and our deer hunting heritage. This is where NDA comes in. The time has come for deer hunters, managers, and the hunting industry to organize and provide a united front to address current and emerging threats to deer hunting and our heritage.

Dave Beronio is a man of many talents. He’s driven, compassionate, mischievous, and on top of it all, he’s absolutely hilarious! Today Steven talks with Dave about everything from, his pro Ski racing, being a dad, to his run for Train To Hunt gold and being an integral part of “Outback Outdoors” So sit back and relax, and see why we love Dave so much and tend to hang on his every word! He was born and raised in Lake Tahoe, Nevada along the rugged snowy peaks of the Sierra Nevada's. The mountains provided opportunities for excellent hunting, fishing and ski racing, which as a kid, were skills passed on by generations of avid competitors. Growing up an athlete, Dave traveled the Alpine ski racing circuit as an Elite level skier, competing all over North America and around the world. He used this talent and secured a scholarship to attend and compete for the University of Nevada Reno while working on his Business Degree. However, hunting remained his true passion. Life in the Sierras provided an environment that would allow his outdoor appetite to grow. He is an avid bow hunter, fly fisherman, bird hunter, and all around sportsman. Dave has a deep appreciation for the outdoors and the wildlife that call it home. He founded the Sierra Nevada Chapter of the Mule Deer Foundation, and is an active member of the Operation Game Thief Citizens board. He spends countless hours volunteering and working with biologists and Wildlife organizations that specialize in big game research and habitat restoration projects. Dave is married to his beautiful wife Denise, and is the proud father to daughter, Hunter and his son, Gatlin. Dave is a firm believer in hard work, dedication and proving his worth above and beyond what is expected. He also believes strongly in loyalty, commitment, and representing himself in a positive way and showing his Faith in God. Dave feels it is important to give back more than he takes, and he teaches his kids the importance of the outdoors and how it provides the food to fill your soul. "It's all part of the adventure!" Now following his passion for Bow Hunting, Dave is also a host for the TV Show, "Outback Outdoors". He is one member of a team of hardcore bow hunters that capture hunts for their television show. In addition, Kevin Zieman, who works with the U.S. Forest Service in California describes how these agreements have benefited federal public lands, state and privately-owned land, and, of course, mule deer, black-tailed deer and other wildlife species. We also talk about some of the specifics of why active management is necessary to maintain healthy sagebrush and forest systems in the West.

Officer Patterson uses his experience as a hunter and his influence as a Utah Conservation Officer to lift the spirits of those who have struggled with physical or emotional difficulties in their lives. In the past he has lifted the spirits of physically challenged individuals by helping them enjoy the outdoors and hunting. This year Gabe focused his attention on the son of a fallen Officer.  Officer Doug Barney was killed in the line of duty on January 17, 2016. Officer Barney left behind his family including his son Jack. After hearing Jack was interested in hunting, Officer Patterson made arrangements with his contacts at the Johnson Mountain Cooperative Wildlife Management Unit (CWMU) who then graciously donated a bull elk tag for Jack. Gabe also reached out to the Mule Deer Foundation who donated a rifle to Jack. Officer Patterson also followed through and helped with Jack’s hunt to make sure he took his elk. Officer Gabe Patterson’s relationship with the hunting public and sportsmen’s groups is an asset to the Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) and the citizens of Utah. He has worked to cultivate these relationships so that he can provide amazing hunting and life changing experiences for those in need.
