STL MPD District 4 Police Captain Chris Stamper joins Chris and Amy following the closure of a park between the Soldiers Memorial and the Central Library on Olive. Stamper says this is a 'focused effort' in the downtown area, and the activity has moved to various park areas in downtown as far west as 16th street. 'We have made numerous arrests,' and are attempting to get services, including drug treatment, to the individuals. 'We can't arrest our way out of this problem,' warns Stamper.

Roaming St. Louis the week before Veterans Day led KMOX host Scott Jagow to the Soldiers Memorial Military Museum in downtown St. Louis. The museum was opened after World War I as a memorial to that war and it remained in subpar condition for many decades. Then in 2018, it was refurbished and today it's one of the city's gems. Scott chats with the museum's director Mark Sundlov and docent Lon Zimmerman about some of the St. Louisans who served and sacrificed in America's conflicts, the prized artifacts inside the exhibits and more.
Members of Gold Star Families, or families that have lost an immediate family member in active duty, hold Memorial Day in high regards as they honor their loved ones, even those whose true fate remains a mystery. Until recently, the Court of Honor at Soldiers Memorial only listed 214 names of St. Louisans who gave the ultimate sacrifice during the Vietnam War. Join The Gist of Freedom as we celebrate Memorial Day with Historian Teddy McQueen President Of The Buffalo Soldier Motorcycle club. Henry Ossian Flipper Born into slavery in March 21,1856. Flipper was appointed to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, in 1873 and became West Point's first African American graduate. He served as a signal officer, installed telegraph lines, and supervised the building of roads. At Fort Sill, he directed the construction of a drainage system that helped prevent the spread of malaria. Still known as "Flipper's Ditch," the ditch is commemorated by a bronze marker at Fort Sill and the fort is listed as a National Historic Landmark. Yet, in 1881, while serving at Fort Davis, Flipper's commanding officer accused him of embezzling $3,791.77 from commissary funds. A court-martial found him not guilty of embezzlement but convicted him of conduct unbecoming an officer and ordered him dismissed from the Army. After his dishonorable discharge, Flipper fought to clear his name.In 1898, a bill was proposed to reinstate him into the Army. The bill and several later ones were tabled, and Flipper died in 1940 without vindication. But in 1976, he was granted an honorable discharge, and later President Bill Clinton issued him a full pardon.
