Maurice has his first compositions and collaborates with Nat Kipner, Robin also debuts his solo compositions and develops his unique style, and Barry continues to adapt to his musical surroundings. Alan Brough has demonstrated his vast music knowledge & passion for years, most famously as team captain in Spicks & Specks. Name me someone more qualified to select three songs for our Ever-growing Playlist of Joy! I'll wait...More recently, Alan has turned his hand to writing books for children aged roughly 10-12. Charlie and the War Against the Grannies was released last year; the next in the series, Charlie and the Karaoke Cockroaches, is released on June 27th. I'm fascinated with the advice he received while learning to write this style: to find your inner 12 year old. The ability to channel your younger self is something I hold in high regard and is potentially the key to creating a smile, a song, or in Alan's case, a series of novels!Alan still listens to new music on a very regular basis and you may be surprised with the songs and artists he mentions. He certainly is a Song Nerd and I thoroughly enjoyed spending time discussing various music, the smell of old record stores and how to earn respect of the staff, the benefits of persistence when listening to music you may not like, the attitude of punk... we cover plenty. It was also great to get an insight in to what it was like to work on Spicks & Specks, and surprising to hear that at times he and ABC staff didn't think he was qualified to perform the role he did so successfully.Join us as we ramble through any manner of things that make he and I happy. I'd love to know which nuggets of info or inspiration you enjoy or learn.Have an awesome day.Hit me up @ TheSongNerd

Welcome to episode 31 of See Hear podcast.  In a first for the show, Bernie, Tim and Maurice invite a film director on the show to discuss his work. Specifically, the crew is joined by Harry Hayes who has directed a terrific award winning documentary called You Better Take Cover. Back in 1981, Australian band Men At Work released the single Down Under from their debut album Business As Usual. The song became famous around the world and became an unofficial Australian national anthem - it has certainly been used at international sporting events involving an Australian team.  The story of the song's rise to fame would have been interesting enough for a short film, but the story had an unexpected second act. In 2008, Australian TV music trivia show Spicks And Specks posed an innocent question asking what children's nursery rhyme a flute riff played in the song by Greg Ham was based on -  the answer had sad and ultimately tragic consequences.  The crew ask Harry about what prompted him to put the documentary together, his investigation into Down Under as a cultural phenomenon and as a legal case. We discuss about the use of quoting riffs from one sing in another - why does the legal fraternity interpret homage as plagiarism? Is their profession equipped to understand the difference? Were the publishers of the nursery rhyme genuinely protecting their "property” or were they just greedy opportunists?  We thank Harry for his time. Keep a look out for a release of the film very shortly. If you want to keep an eye out for screenings, watch the trailer or find out other information about the film, you can go to http://youbettertakecover.com/ If you dig what we do, could you please rate us at iTunes or even better, spread the word that the show exists so more folks can tune in. You can download the show by searching for See Hear podcast on iTunes or download from http://seehear.podbean.com/ Please join our friendly Facebook discussion group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/seehearpodcast/  You can send us emails at seehearpodcast@gmail.com to make suggestions of films you’d like us to discuss, give us your thoughts on what we do, or anything music film related.
