EPISODE 113 - “BIG STAR, SMALL SCREEN - A CONVERSATION WITH FRONT ROW CLASSICS' BRANDON DAVIS” - 11/10/25 In the early days of television, many classic film actors were hesitant—or even outright refused—to appear on TV for a multitude of reasons. Many thought that TV was low-brow. Others thought they would get overexposed and it would somehow diminish their box-office power. Slowly stars like LORETTA YOUNG, BARBARA STANWYCK, ROBERT MONTGOMERY, and LUCILLE BALL figured out that TV could enhance and elongate their popularity and appeal. Slowly, classic stars began to pop up on the boob-tube. Joining us this week is BRANDON DAVIS, host extraordinaire of the fantastic podcast Front Row Classics, who will discuss the migration of classic film stars to the small screen and how it affected their popularity and careers. You haven't lived until you've seen IDA LUPINO doing her best “Norma Desmond” on an episode of “Charlie's Angels” in 1977. SHOW NOTES: Sources: Columbo: The Series (2017), by Scott V. Creators and writers of hit film Top End Wedding, Miranda Tapsell and Joshua Tyler, join us this episode to talk about their new Amazon Australia Original Series Top End Bub. Following the global success of their debut feature film of Sundance-favourite Top End Wedding, creators and writers Miranda Tapsell and Joshua Tyler found audiences clamouring for more tales from the top end – and they were happy to oblige. As Tyler says, “If you've got an audience there, you've got a fan base, keep feeding them!” Tapsell and Tyler share how they leveraged the IP from the big screen to television, the appeal of the comedy half-hour, the joy of collaborating together, and how creators can embrace family, community and love to reflect the breadth and diversity of First Nations experiences on screen.

Let's check out the some of the psychology behind this compelling documentary.
Our TV critic Dheepthika Laurent brings us the latest international and local productions screening at Monte Carlo's 64th festival, with American star Robin Wright presenting her latest project, a psychological thriller called "The Girlfriend". We discuss the major prizes at this year's event and hear from multi-talented former tennis player Yannick Noah on his first television appearance in "Mort sur terre battue". We also look ahead to the third and final season of South Korean mega-hit "Squid Game" and consider a new Marvel spin-off from the world of Wakanda, starring promising young actress Dominique Thorne.
Smart. Funny. Great...and tons of psychology going on here.

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by absolute Irish acting royalty SIMONE KIRBY!A rare treat here with the wonderful Simone catching up and checking in with Pip, in a celebration of so much of what makes the performances we see what they are. Simone's been putting in work on the stage and screen for a minute, and you will have surely witnessed her greatness in such projects as the ones in the episode title (and a cursory glance on IMDB), but it's always a valuable gift to hear about the life behind the lines. From growing up in County Clare and her origin story, to making it through the ranks of the acting path, as well as what a future in theatre could have looked like, moving to London, working with her husband and child, and an audition concluding with a simple note to tone down the Bond. How about that. Steven Spielberg and Michael Mann blew audiences away with their award-winning television movie debuts. But these films are more than just made for TV - they showcased the early talents of these acclaimed directors and the trademarks that would come to define their filmography. Mann infused The Jericho Mile (1979) with an authenticity that would lead him to Thief (1981) and Spielberg preceded his mastery of suspense in Jaws (1975) with the truck in Duel (1971)!The Deep Question: Who would you cast as Dom's mother in the Fast and Furious franchise? This Week's Features:Duel (1971)The Jericho Mile (1979)Message Jason and Ryan

Easter is nearly here, which makes the timing right for the latest season of "The Chosen," a series that looks at the life of Jesus. The Amazon Prime Video series, which makes its debut in theaters before moving to streaming, is an interesting model for shows that bridges the gap between the formats. Besides that, the Max's medical drama "The Pitt" will wrap soon, as does "The White Lotus." But as those wrap, season 2 of "The Last of Us" is about to return. The final season of "The Handmaid's Tale" comes to Hulu in April. And Pierece Brosnan and Helen Mirren team up in "MobLand" on Netflex. Learn more about those shows and others on this episode. About the show Streamed & Screened is a podcast about movies and TV hosted by Bruce Miller, a longtime entertainment reporter who is now the editor of the Sioux City Journal in Iowa and Terry Lipshetz, a senior producer for Lee Enterprises based in Madison, Wisconsin. The sumptuous dishes of a 19th-century celebrity chef are the jumping-off point for "Carême", and we check out the fifth season of "HPI", which sees Audrey Fleurot embody an exceptionally intelligent part-time sleuth. We also find out more about Amanda Seyfried's latest show "Long Bright River", which the award-winning actress is presenting at the festival, while Christina Hendricks' latest project takes the "Mad Men" star to rural Ireland. Plus, as "Adolescence" sparks debate in the UK, we discuss its shocking subject matter and innovative style, and we also get a glimpse of comic Hollywood caper "The Studio".

Oh yes it's ladies' night on the second episode of Pop Goes The Actor...but IS the feeling right? Sometimes! We wend our way through copyright-compliant bugle boys of Company Wonder Woman, the adorkable Zooey Deschanel, Shelley Fabares's evident terror, Marla Gibbs's appealing blood-thinner ad, and a track from Cybill Shepherd that puts the "no" back in "bossa nova." Before he was Bart Maverick, Jack Kelly led the frantic search for a deadly snake on a boat in "A Shipment of Mute Fate" (originally aired on CBS on January 6, 1957). Beloved TV mom June Lockhart of Lassie and Lost in Space is an actress who's had enough poor treatment at the hands of a producer in "Shooting Star" (originally aired on CBS on March 24, 1957). And Richard Anderson, who'd later give orders to the Six Million Dollar Man and the Bionic Woman, plays an inexperienced cavalry officer who's too eager for action in "Command" (originally aired on CBS on September 14, 1958).

There have been many classic films turned into TV shows with less-than-stellar results.
