Tristram, 2025

Send us a Text Message. This is the third of a multi-episode series in which I chat with Dr. Larissa ‘Kat' Tracey about literary representations of medieval adultery and its reality. In this episode Kat and I survey and discuss the major nineteenth- and twentieth-century literary treatments of medieval adultery, focusing on the stories of La(u)ncelot and Guinevere and of Tristan/Tristram and Isolde/Isolt/Iseult The episode begins with an opera, Richard Wagner's extremely influential retelling of the tale, Tristan und Isolde. Although composed between 1857 and 1859, the opera did not premiere until 1865, because it was deemed too expensive to stage and its complex, innovative music was thought to be unperformable. We consider how Wagner reconceived his medieval source, Gottfried of Strassburg's thirteenth-century romance, through the lens of Schopenhauer's life-denying philosophy, and how in its composition art imitated life, as Wagner engaged in what was the very least an emotional affair with his wealthy Swiss patron's wife. Kat and I then discuss the very different treatments of these Arthurian stories about adultery by three leading Victorian poets and one early twentieth-century American: the poet Laureate Alfred Lord Tennyson, the decadent aesthete Algernon Swinburne, the Pre-Raphaelite artist and author William Morris, and the popular American poet Edwin Arlington Robinson, whose now all-but-forgotten best-selling poem Tristram won the Pulitzer Prize in 1928. We then turn to how twentieth-century novelists have handled the moral issues arising from medieval adultery in their renditions of the Arthurian legend. The episode concludes with an analysis of adultery in a non-Arthurian medieval novel, Sigrid Undset's historical trilogy about fourteenth-century Norway, Kristin Lavransdatter (1920-1923), which earned the author the Noble Prize for Literature in 1928, the same year that Robinson's very different Tristram won the Pulitzer. Kat and I began this episode with the intention of covering both modern literature and movies dealing with medieval adultery. But it became clear as we were recording that a single episode would be very long. So we decided to talk about medieval adultery on film in a final, fourth episode, which I will be releasing in about a week's time. And that will be it for medieval adultery, although I plan to have Kat return in future to talk about a subject on which she has written extensively, torture and cruelty in medieval literature. As I have jokingly told her, she is my go to person for medieval perversities. This episode contains two musical snippets:Wagner's “Prelude to the Liebestod [Love Death]” from his opera Tristan und Isolde, conducted by Arturo Toscanini (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBFcDGTzgAI) “If Ever I Would Leave You” from the musical Camelot, lyrics and music by Lerner and Loewe and sung by Robert Goulet as Lancelot (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xL52hEArSfM) In my discussion of the literary texts, I drew upon the researches of several scholars, among them:John Deathridge, Wagner Beyond Good and Evil, University of California Press, 2008R.J.A. Kilbourn, “Redemption Revalued in Tristan und Isolde: Schopenhauer, Wagner, Nietzsche,” in University of Toronto Quarterly, Volume 67, Number 4, Fall 1998, pp. 781-788“Tristan und Isolde,” Wikipedia (yes, I do consult Wikipedia)“Listen on Podurama https://podurama.com Intro and exit music are by Alexander NakaradaIf you have questions, feel free to contact me at richard.abels54@gmail.com

Today's poems–”The Hill Place” and “Day's Diamond”–come from Robert P. Tristram Coffin. Coffin (1892-1955) grew up in Brunswick, Maine on a “saltwater farm.” He attended Bowdoin, Princeton, and Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar before, as well as after, serving two years in World War I. He taught at Wells College in Aurora, New York from 1921-1934 and eventually returned to Bowdoin College, where he was Pierce Professor in English from 1934 until his death in 1955.Throughout his life, Robert Coffin successfully combined the roles of artist and teacher, poet and prose writer. He authored more than forty books, and was awarded many honors, including the 1936 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry for his book, Strange Holiness. In 1945, Coffin was elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters for “work of permanent value in American literature,” and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences granted him membership in 1949.-bio via University of New HampshireAs promised, Coffin's essay, Night of Lobster Get full access to The Daily Poem Podcast at dailypoempod.substack.com/subscribe
Edwin Arlington Robinson was born in Head Tide, Maine on December 22, 1869 (the same year as W. B. Yeats). His family moved to Gardiner, Maine, in 1870, which renamed “Tilbury Town,” became the backdrop for many of Robinson's poems. Robinson described his childhood as stark and unhappy; he once wrote in a letter to Amy Lowell that he remembered wondering why he had been born at the age of six. After high school, Robinson spent two years studying at Harvard University as a special student and his first poems were published in the Harvard Advocate.Robinson privately printed and released his first volume of poetry, The Torrent and the Night Before, in 1896 at his own expense; this collection was extensively revised and published in 1897 as The Children of the Night. Unable to make a living by writing, he got a job as an inspector for the New York City subway system. In 1902, he published Captain Craig and Other Poems. This work received little attention until President Theodore Roosevelt wrote a magazine article praising it and Robinson. Roosevelt also offered Robinson a sinecure in a U.S. Customs House, a job he held from 1905 to 1910. Robinson dedicated his next work, The Town Down the River (1910), to Roosevelt.Robinson's first major success was The Man Against the Sky (1916). He also composed a trilogy based on Arthurian legends: Merlin (1917), Lancelot (1920), and Tristram (1927), which won a Pulitzer Prize in 1928. Robinson was also awarded a Pulitzer Prize for his Collected Poems (1921) in 1922 and The Man Who Died Twice (1924) in 1925. For the last twenty-five years of his life, Robinson spent his summers at the MacDowell Colony of artists and musicians in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Robinson never married and led a notoriously solitary lifestyle. He died in New York City on April 6, 1935.-bio via Academy of American Poets Get full access to The Daily Poem Podcast at dailypoempod.substack.com/subscribe
In the latest episode of Tech Talks Daily, we venture into the evolving landscape of mobile technology with Tristram Bates, the Head of Mobile at NewDay and an influential figure in the UK's largest iOS meetup group. Our discussion turns from the usual AI focus, delving into the future of mobile apps and the imminent challenges posed by technologies like Apple's rumored Vision Pro headset. The conversation with Tristram is a journey through the potential and challenges of the ever-advancing mobile technology world. One of the intriguing aspects we examine is the rumored launch of Apple's Vision Pro headset. As the mobile tech community buzzes with anticipation, Tristram provides a nuanced perspective on this groundbreaking device. We ponder its price point, the market it's aimed at, and the broader implications for consumers and tech enthusiasts alike. As someone who has witnessed the evolution of mobile technology from its infancy, Tristram's insights into the development of apps for varying platforms and form factors are particularly enlightening. The challenge of adapting user interfaces for devices like the Vision headset is not just a technical hurdle but also a creative endeavor. It's a task that requires developers to reimagine how users interact with technology in a world where augmented reality (AR) could soon be as commonplace as smartphones. Our discussion also touches on the implications of alternative app stores, which have gained significant attention with the European Union's recent regulations. Tristram's perspective on this shift offers a glimpse into a future where the app ecosystem might mirror the more open model on Android platforms. This change could mark a pivotal moment in how apps are distributed and accessed, potentially reshaping the mobile app industry. At the heart of our conversation lies the role of artificial intelligence and machine learning in shaping the future of mobile apps. Tristram envisions a future where apps are not just tools but intelligent companions, intuitively providing information and services without needing explicit instructions from users. This evolution could mirror the transformation of search engines over the years – from requiring specific queries to intuitively organizing information based on a user's context and needs. As we wrap up our conversation, Tristram shares a thought-provoking viewpoint on the cyclical nature of technology. The choice of the song "History Repeating" is symbolic, highlighting how understanding the past can give us invaluable insights into the future of technology. This perspective is especially relevant in an era where the lines between different tech domains are increasingly blurred and where understanding historical patterns can help us navigate the future more effectively.

Kieran talks with Tristram Hicks, co-author with Nicholas Gilmour of “The War on Dirty Money,” an examination of the promise and short-comings of the current costly global effort to combat financial crime. Drawing on his years as a New Scotland Yard detective superintendent and his role as an international criminal justice advisor on the operational effectiveness of anti-money laundering regimes, Tristram discusses why current anti-financial crime efforts are inadequate and how they can be improved.
Sea birds face all kinds of threats these days: a warmer climate, decreasing food supplies, attacks by invasive species, and others. One of the most basic is rising sea level, which threatens to cover some of their nesting grounds. To help species survive, conservationists are relocating sea bird chicks to higher ground. An example is the Tristram's storm petrel. It breeds in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. But it was wiped out on the island of Midway by rats, and it's threatened by plastic pollution on other islands in the chain. And on the island of Tern, it's threatened by the rising waters. Tern covers just 26 acres. And much of that was built up by the Navy during World War II for use as an airstrip. The runway is rarely used today, but it's still there. Even so, there's plenty of room for petrels and other species of birds, sea turtles, and seals. But the island extends only six feet above sea level. And with the ocean rising, petrel nesting grounds could be flooded out in the years ahead. So a conservation group recently moved about 40 chicks to new digs on the island of Oahu, 500 miles away. The group had already moved some chicks to another island a few years ago. And it's done the same thing with other species, including albatross and another species of petrel. Most of the chicks have survived and returned to their new homes to breed. So relocating a few chicks today could help Tristram's storm petrel survive for decades to come.

“‘Hey! Do you go to church? Why?' ‘Are you a Christian? Why? Just tell me in a few words.' What would you say? If you only had 30 seconds, a kind of ‘elevator speech', what would you say? ‘I go to church because…' If you don't say anything, you may have lost an opportunity. St Peter in this first letter tells us, ‘Always be ready to give an account for the hope that is in you.' So, what would your 30-second account be?” Br. Geoffrey Tristram finds inspiration in the witness of Philip, for what makes a good evangelist, and he urges us to be ready to give an account of the hope that is in us.
“As Christians, we are as susceptible as anyone else to extreme consumerism: each of us can all too easily get caught up in a whirlwind of needless buying and spending. I am also sure that the most important way that we can begin to heal our planet is to allow God, daily, to heal our hearts; to mend our divided hearts. Pope Francis, in his beautiful encyclical, Laudato Si' writes, “The emptier a person's heart is, the more he or she needs to buy, own and consume.” So, fill your heart every morning with God! ” Br. Geoffrey Tristram shares three contemplative practices that can help us to experience contentment, free us from the desire for more, and help us to love and appreciate what we already have.

“Choose life. Every single day we are called to make many choices. They are often very small and unnoticed. But slowly and unseen, over the years, these choices SHAPE our journey through life. The choices we make, however small, set us on a path which may or may not lead to life.” Br. Geoffrey Tristram invites us, as we navigate the paths ahead of us, to “choose life,” that our hearts may overflow with the delights of inexpressible love.
“Today we celebrate the great gift which God poured out upon us all on the Day of Pentecost. When the Spirit came down to those disciples they were changed, transformed. Their spirits were recharged with life and power. They came back to life. And that same promise is made to us, today.” On Pentecost, Br. Geoffrey Tristram gives us a wake-up call – to pray.
“It was seeing Jesus' body, in all its brokenness and woundedness which brought Thomas to belief. But this beautiful story is not a story of proof but a story of love. For me, the story of Thomas is not primarily a story of a sceptic who comes to believe because his list of doubts is answered; not an intellectual assent to something proven. The story of Thomas is rather the story of a man who comes to believe not because he has enough proof, but because he has actually touched the mystery of divine, self-sacrificial love.” In this sermon on Thomas, Br. Geoffrey urges us to listen to our gut and heart, not our head, as we encounter the Lord.
