I am an educator with over 19 years of experience and have served in many capacities; a classroom teacher, Academic Dean, Math Coordinator, District Curriculum Coordinator, District/ School Curriculum Specialist, District STEM Coordinator, District Title I coordinator, STEM/Innovation Director, and High Principal. Each experience has given me many valuable tools to inspire, motivate, change, and impact student lives nationwide by offering them equitable opportunities and resources that would enhance and impact a student's future...Five years ago I was given the opportunity to excel further and extend my educational studies nationwide by becoming a certified national faculty member through the Buck Institute of Education. It was during the same time theEduProject was launched. In this position, I train educators, write blogs and articles to help failing schools turn around. As district STEM Director, I implemented the first Cyber Engineering Academy in Louisiana. I have been recognized as teacher of the year for my contributions to RAND studies to improve the quality of the curriculum. I am also a member of several professional educational organizations across the country. Each year, I attend a variety of webinars and conferences to ensure continuous growth. As a community servant, I have directed and hosted several events for the youth in the community. In particular, I have a youth nonprofit program that offers mentoring, scholarship guidance, educational training, and volunteer experiences for students 13-19years of age. I also host a summer event named “Called To Serve” during this event where we offer resources, teen sessions, and showcase local talent in a free concert. This is an event that our youth look forward to every year.

Dr. Darryl Boyd is a Research Chemist in the Optical Sciences Division of the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory. He is also the STEM Director at the Transformational Education Adventure Center in McLean, VA, as well as the STEM instructor for Roots Charter School in Washington, DC. As a synthetic chemist, Dr. Boyd creates new molecules and materials. His work focuses on developing and studying materials that can transmit infrared light, particularly materials that leverage the unique properties of the element sulfur. By looking through these materials, we can see wavelengths of light that are longer than what we can detect with our eyes alone. Dr. Boyd is also dedicated to outreach and getting students excited about STEM. When he’s not doing science, Darryl enjoys writing, playing his trumpet or saxophone, working out at the gym, and spending time at church. He and his wife also love hanging out with their young daughter who is less than a year old. He received his B.S. degree in Chemistry from the University of Michigan. Next, he attended Purdue University where he was awarded his M.S. in Biochemistry and Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry and Electrochemistry. Afterwards, Dr. Boyd began working as a National Research Council Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Naval Research Laboratory, and he accepted a position as a Research Chemist there in 2014. Dr. Boyd has received many awards and honors throughout his career, including an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship, a Jerome & Isabella Karle Research Fellow from the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, Lloyd N. Ferguson Young Scientist Award from the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers, and an Edison Patent Award from the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory. He was also named among the “Talented 12” of 2018 by the American Chemical Society’s Chemical & Engineering News magazine and a 2019 Rising Researcher in Defense and Commercial Sensing by The International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE). In our interview, Dr. Boyd will share more about his life and research.

In this episode: We meet Judy Cara, Project Manager for the Planetarium and STEM Center at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. Judy recently oversaw a massive makeover of the planetarium, which had been closed to the public for 15 years and reopened on March 3, 2019. Their attendance goal for the first year was 25,000 visitors, and as they approach their one-year mark, they’ve had 41,000 visitors and counting. In this conversation, Judy talks about how she was initially more interested in the arts than in STEM fields, and the experiences she had that changed her interests. She also discusses the new technology and other upgrades visitors will enjoy at the planetarium, points out that not all the shows they present are just space related, and how, beyond just visual presentations, the planetarium also offers hands-on STEM activities for field trip classes. To illustrate how inspiring a visit to the U.S. Air Force Academy’s Planetarium can be, Judy says, “Just last week we had Colonel Nick Hague here, who is a graduate and an astronaut. And he talks about how, when he was six years old, he went to that planetarium with his dad and that’s what convinced him he should apply to become a cadet, and then subsequently an astronaut.” Free shows are held for planetarium visitors Monday through Friday, at 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. For details and things to know before visiting the planetarium, visit www.usafa.edu/planetarium.
