There were heated exchanges over hogweed at the most recent meeting of Clare County Council. Giant Hogweed can cause burns and even blindness if humans come into contact with it. The potentially dangerous invasive species of weed is present in parts of Clare, having spread through part of the River Shannon catchment, including alongside the River Blackwater in South-East Clare. A motion came before this month's Council meeting, urging the local authority to ask the relevant Minister to provide the necessary funding for the eradication of Hogweed. To speak about the issue of hogweed, Alan Morrissey was joined by Shannon Banks Sinn Fein Cllr, who suffered a burn after coming into contact with hogweed as a child, James Ryan and Clonlara Independent Cllr, Michael Begley. In this episode, Tommy V and the crew sit down with John James Ryan from Keep Flying to discuss their upcoming album 'Time and Tide.' They delve into the creative process behind the album, the evolution of the band's sound, and the dynamics of their lineup changes. John shares insights on the themes of the album, their touring plans, and the unique experiences of being a vegan on the road. The conversation also touches on the band's quest for the world's largest attractions and the balance between business and creativity in the music industry.Power chords and crashing boards. Mikey, Tom, and Justin talk music, hockey, and anything else that gets in their way. Tom and Mikey are lifelong friends that grew up on Long Island during the glory days of alternative music where our local bands were As Tall As Lions, Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, Bayside, The Sleeping, Envy on the Coast, you get the point. We spent many nights together at The Downtown, catching any pop-punk, indie, hardcore, or emo band that came through. This was not a phase, Mom! Fast forward 20 years and we are still just as passionate about the scene as we were during our girl jeans and youth XL band tees days. Tom and Mikey are diehard New York Islanders fans, but Justin (Bolts fan) likes to remind us that we are #notanislespodcast. As we got older we realized we can like more than one thing and running beside our love for music has always been our love for hockey. We have realized we are not alone in this thinking, actually there are many of us that love these two things! This podcast explores just how connected they are!NEW EPISODE EVERY TUESDAY! A local community in south-east Clare has secured grant funding to restore one of its most popular amenities. Due to the extensive use of some areas of the Seanchoill playground, parts of the recreational space have been closed off to facilitate repair works. A grant of €6,000 has been awarded the local community to carry out these works and return the entire site to full working order. Westbury Sinn Fein councillor, James Ryan, is hopeful the parts of the playground that are currently closed will be reopened in the coming weeks.

At present, Ireland is the only country in Europe which doesn't acknowledge FASD as a disability. The disorder is the most prevalent Nuero-developmental disability and affects a greater number of people than autism, cerebral palsy and down syndrome combined. Four Clare councillors currently sit on the HSE Regional Health Forum West, while a number of others hold positions on school boards. Shannon Banks Sinn Féin Councillor, James Ryan, says Clare holds a unique position from which it can incite change.

Shannon Banks native James Ryan has not only been ratified to occupy the council seat vacated by Sinn Féin Deputy Donna McGettigan, but will also fulfil her position on the HSE's Regional Health Forum West. The preliminary findings of a HIQA review to determine if this region needs another Emergency Department, meanwhile, are due between January and February of next year. Councillor Ryan says securing enhanced healthcare services is vital.
A debutant Clare County Councillor could be in line for a baptism of fire in his new role. It follows a special meeting at Áras Chontae An Chláir, in which Conor and James Ryan have been officially ratified as councillors to replace two of Clare's newly elected TDs. With the end of one era, comes the beginning of another, and the departure of TDs Joe Cooney and Donna McGettigan to Leinster House paves the way for new public representatives to take centre stage of this county's domestic affairs. Deputy Cooney's promotion, however, throws another spanner into the works, as the Killaloe Municipal District is now bereft of its Cathaoirleach. One possible scenario could see Leas Cathaoirleach Maghera Fianna Fáil Councillor Pat Hayes maintain order for the first six months of the year, with Fine Gael's Conor Ryan taking over from there as per the council's power-sharing agreement. Another contender could also enter the fray, but this will all be decided at the next meeting of the Killaloe MD in January. Cllr Ryan says he'll look forward to any challenge that comes his way. A Clare based former Air Freight Specialist is aiming to spearhead initiatives to increase traffic at Shannon Airport for his council tenure. Shannon Banks native James Ryan has also been formally ratified to Clare County Council following a special meeting yesterday. He will also sit on the HSE Regional Health Forum West, along with the local authority's Memorial, Traveler Accommodation and Clare Local Development Committees. Councillor Ryan has big ambitions for his electoral area.
East Clare's newest councillor is hoping to bring about major improvement to special needs education, youth facilities and infrastructure in rural areas. O'Callaghan's Mills farmer Conor Ryan has been selected to be co-opted to the council seat vacated by TD Joe Cooney, following a Fine Gael selection convention last night. A special meeting of the local authority will take place on Thursday to formally ratify the 33-Year Old's position, along with that of Sinn Féín's James Ryan who will replace TD Donna McGettigan. Conor has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan that a key focus will also be tackle the spread of TB and storm responses on local farms.
A soon-to-be Clare Sinn Féin councillor says his primary aim while on the local authority will be to develop and maintain the "ignored" south-eastern region of the county. A Sinn Féin selection convention in Shannon has seen James Ryan unanimously selected to fill the seat on Clare County Council vacated by Donna McGettigan following her election to Dáil Éireann two weeks ago. The Westbury native, who works as a teacher and artist, ran for the party in June's Local Elections, receiving 455 first preference votes. He's been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons he'll endeavour to tackle the overgrown parts of south-east Clare and look after the needs of its ageing population.

This month, two behemoths of British culture crashed into one another, when the new season of Doctor Who featured a much-anticipated Beatles episode called “The Devil's Chord.” Both fandoms have been hoping for this crossover episode for years, and we finally got it, complete with an incredible new villain played by Jinkx Monsoon. Erika is joined by James Ryan and Ed Chen, who both have one foot solidly planted in both of these fandoms, giving us an excuse to nerd out over these worlds colliding. With their love of Doctor Who, the Beatles, and alternate history stories, there are few people more qualified to talk about this topic. James (Jim) Ryan is the author of the novels Raging Gail and Red Jenny and the Pirates of Buffalo, as well as the popular history The Pirates of New York and short stories in numerous anthologies. He writes the column “Fantasia Obscura” for Forces of Geek, continuing on from his initial run at REBEAT. A lifelong Beatles fan, his alternate-history stories of the Beatles have been published in a collection called Alt Together Now. Ed Chen is the co-creator and co-host of the When They Was Fab and the Toppermost of the Poppermost podcasts. He tells us that somewhere, buried in his deep dark past is a Beatles/Doctor Who fanfic, where he “Mary Sue'd” himself and his friends into the companion roles. We'll be talking about just some of the many connections between the Beatles and Doctor Who, including their shared timeline, actors who played both Doctors and Beatles, and the many Beatles references over Doctor Who's 60-year history. We'll also recap the Beatles-specific parts of the Doctor Who/Beatles episode, “The Devil's Chord.” We've kept this episode focused on the Beatles-related elements of both the history and the episode, and we'll be discussing spoilers for “The Devil's Chord.” If you want more Doctor Who, the When They Was Fab podcast has an extended cut of this conversation with a deeper dive into the Doctor Who side of things. --------------------- Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter/X for photos, videos, and more from this episode & past episodes — we're @bcthebeatles everywhere. The Government is being accused of punishing rural people in this county with the latest fuel tax hike. The rate of carbon tax on home heating fuels has risen by €7.50 to €56 per tonne, while natural gas customers now have to pay 1 cent extra per kilowatt hour. Based on the average annual consumption, each household will now face a carbon tax bill of €122. Westbury resident and Sinn Féin local election candidate James Ryan believes the policy doesn't take older homes with inferior insulation into account.

James Ryan, a 50-year-old oral surgeon and former owner of Evolution Oral Surgery in Germantown, Maryland, has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for supplying his girlfriend, Sarah Harris, with addictive anesthesia solutions that ultimately led to her death. The sentencing far exceeds state recommendations for the case of depraved-heart murder. Circuit Court Judge Cheryl A. McCally, who presided over the case, showed little mercy as she delivered the sentence. Harris, who was only 25 years old and weighed a mere 83 pounds at the time of her death, succumbed to a lethal combination of ketamine, propofol, and diazepam intoxication. Prosecutors argued that Ryan played a significant role in Harris's death, as he continuously provided her with stolen drugs from his practice, even as her health deteriorated. Despite a calculated sentencing guideline of 10 to 25 years, Judge McCally emphasized the exploitation of trust and the gravity of Ryan's actions, leading her to impose the 45-year sentence. Tina Harris, Sarah's grieving mother, expressed satisfaction with the verdict. In an emotional statement in court, she clutched a lock of Sarah's braided hair and a satchel of her ashes, proclaiming, "This is all I have left of my baby. This is all I have left because you took her." The text messages showed that it was February 2021 when Ryan first introduced her to ketamine, a drug often used for surgery sedation, which he said would help her anxiety. “I can give you an injection,” he wrote. “The anxiety will be completely gone in 6 seconds.” The couple's conversations expanded to other drugs and supplies, including IV poles, saline bags, gauze, tape, and 20-gauge needles. “Can you get more Versed and ketamine,” Harris wrote on Aug. 27, 2021. “And also IV catheter.” The texts were often written while Harris was at their home and Ryan was at his office. At one point, as noted by McCally on Wednesday, Ryan wrote to Harris that he had given her some more ketamine while she slept. The judge also referenced a 10-second video, apparently taken by Ryan, of the two of them sitting next to each other. Harris had an arm up in the air as if it was floating that he would make such a video and keep it made an impression on the judge. “The fact that that seemed appropriate in your world is gut-wrenching,” she said. On the morning of January 26, 2022, Ryan discovered Harris unresponsive in their Clarksburg home and called 911. Despite efforts to revive her, paramedics pronounced Harris dead at the scene. An autopsy later confirmed the cause of death as drug intoxication. Prosecutors sought a 55-year sentence, arguing that Ryan was aware of the deadly consequences of his actions. Ryan's defense maintained that he acted out of love to alleviate Harris's pain but made the wrong decisions. They emphasized his struggles with drug abuse and mental health. Judge McCally, however, condemned Ryan's dangerous actions, pointing to text messages and a video recording where Harris appeared to be high. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Oral surgeon James Ryan, 50, has been found guilty of murder for the death of his 25-year-old girlfriend, Sarah Harris. The verdict was reached on Friday after a three-hour deliberation by the jury. The case revolved around the death of Sarah Harris, who was discovered lifeless at Ryan's Maryland home in January 2022. An autopsy revealed that Harris had died due to intoxication caused by a mixture of ketamine, propofol, and diazepam - powerful anesthetic drugs. Prosecutors alleged that Ryan displayed "an extreme indifference" to Harris' life by providing her with these dangerous substances despite her deteriorating health and addiction struggles. At the time of her death, Harris weighed a mere 83 pounds. Court documents and testimony indicated that Ryan had set up an intravenous stand to administer these addictive drugs to Harris. A search of their home uncovered multiple bottles of the controlled substances, along with hypodermic needles, syringes, and related paraphernalia. Investigators also brought to light text messages between the couple, where Harris explicitly requested various controlled substances from Ryan's dental practice. The text exchanges revealed that Ryan had been facilitating an at-home drug delivery system for Harris, including the provision of IV poles, saline solution, fluids, and needles. Harris had first crossed paths with Ryan in the fall of 2020 when she sought oral surgery services at his practice. Their relationship evolved as Harris was subsequently employed as a surgical technician due to her prior experience in the field. The prosecution argued that Ryan, being a skilled oral surgeon well-aware of the risks involved, had deliberately supplied Harris with these dangerous substances, contributing to her gradual decline. Throughout the trial, Ryan's defense maintained that Harris' death was either a result of suicide or an accidental overdose that she administered to herself. Defense attorney Thomas DeGonia pointed to Harris' history of requesting ketamine for relief from depression and the recent death of her brother. DeGonia argued that these factors could have contributed to her tragic end. Ryan chose not to testify during his trial, and the jury ultimately rejected the defense's arguments, finding him guilty on all counts. Ryan's sentencing date remains to be determined, and he could potentially face up to 55 years behind bars. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Today, Memorial Day, I want to share a commentary on Memorial Day from Chuck Colson. Here's Chuck: This Memorial Day, reflect with me on how we should respond to the enormous sacrifices of our men and women in uniform. Memorial Day is when we honor the men and women of our armed services who have made “the supreme sacrifice,” who gave their lives for their country. Especially these days, when Memorial Day seems nothing more than a time for cookouts and swim parties, we cannot be reminded often enough about how great a debt we owe our war dead. They gave up their hopes and dreams, families, and friends. They submitted themselves to rigorous discipline—something I understand as a former Marine—24-hour-a-day duty—and placed their lives in great peril. “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” Their sacrifice should inspire in us a profound sense of gratitude. Gratitude for the freedoms we enjoy, bought with a price. And that gratitude should compel us to lives of service as well. Serving Christ, our neighbor, and yes, our nation. I can't help but recall the brilliant film Saving Private Ryan. James Ryan, now in his seventies, has returned with his family to the military cemetery in Normandy. He visits the grave of Capt. John Miller, the man who, a half a century before, led the mission to retrieve—to save—Pvt. Ryan. At the end of the mission, Miller was fatally wounded. As he lay dying, his final words to Pvt. Ryan were “James. Earn this … earn it.” We then see Ryan kneeling at Capt. Miller's grave, marked by a cross. Ryan, his voice trembling with emotion, says, “Every day I think about what you said to me that day on the bridge. I tried to live my life the best that I could. I hope that was enough. I hope that, at least in your eyes, I've earned what all of you have done for me. “ Red-eyed, Ryan turns to his wife and says, “Tell me I've led a good life … tell me I am a good man.” With great dignity, she says, “You are.” With that, James Ryan salutes the grave of Capt. Miller. I tell this story in greater detail in my book The Good Life, which you can purchase at colsoncenter.org. You see, Pvt. Ryan, out of gratitude for Capt. Miller's sacrifice, did all in his power to live a good life. And Memorial Day is a great time for each of us to look into the mirror … to examine our own lives. Are we living good lives in gratitude for all those who have sacrificed for us—including our men and women in the military, our families, our friends, and most of all Christ? Are we, like Ryan, kneeling before the cross? Spielberg, a master cinematographer, had to realize the power of this imagery. Are we, out of gratitude, doing our duty for Christ, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, ministering to those in prison, in whatever harvest field to which the Lord has called us? Examine your life. And this Memorial Day, at the very least, thank those who have sacrificed for you and those you know who have served in our nation's armed forces. Maybe you'll do what I do when you see a guy or gal in uniform … at the airport, at the store, wherever … walk up to them and thank them for their service. And then go and remember Whom it is you serve. For more resources to live like a Christian in this cultural moment, go to breakpoint.org. This commentary was last aired on May 30, 2022.
