Scuba diving has been stuck in the stone age for a while. Here is a recap of, in my opinion, why we are going to catch up to the other big sports rather quickly. We've all seen the endless, well-intentioned attempts at a new dive app like how to find dive locations, log a dive, or an agency app (like PADI, NAUI, SSI, SDI, BSAC, CMAS, etc.). But I see people light up when they realize they can store ALL of their certs and cross-validate dive logs. It tracks professional divers and operators so you can get validated by pro from any agency. The other big one is the fact it notifies you of divers in your area. Buddy Radar is a dive buddy finder, and it actually goes off quite a bit when I travel. This is a game changer as more people get on the app. It's got buckets of other features that continue to impress me. I hope you love this recap that has been 2 years in the making! PS if you want to get some free stuff, win contests, and maybe grab a sponsorship, jump over to their site and get on it! https://divewithbuddy.com/buddyexplorerteam – Download Buddy App for iOS https://apps.apple.com/us/app/buddy-dive-log-community/id1588860327 Download Buddy App for Android https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.divewithbuddy.app&pli=1 https://www.tiktok.com/@divewithbuddy https://www.instagram.com/divewithbuddy/ — Kenny Dyal is the host of The Scuba Diving Podcast: TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@kenny_dyal Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sweetwater_scuba Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/realkennydyal LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/kennydyal Twitter: https://twitter.com/RealKennyDyal www.sweetwaterscuba.com

In this showcase episode of the Buddy App, we go after the CORE reason the dive industry struggles to produce income earners: connection. The top question I get is “where do you suggest I go?” or “where can I learn to dive in my area?” or “who has dive trips around that area?” Despite all of the search engines on our smartphones and apps, this question is still going strong. This feature of the buddy app let's dive shops, charters, resorts and even Independent Scuba Instructors create their own platform to connect with divers, and gets them found by divers. It is (finally) a TRUE hub for the diving community. It benefits divers, students, organizations and businesses, so everyone wins by being connected. No weird or awkward groups to join on some website or social platform you really don't want - just divers connecting in the easiest way possible. The Buddy Dive Log app has everything else in a dive log, like social media links, tipping functions, galleries, filters, and even validates your dives certifications and professional status (with all agencies like PADI, NAUI, SSI, SDI, CMAS, and more). So you can connect on so many other levels as well. Strong opinions, confusion, and being overwhelmed with getting started are all part of this beast… The good news is we have an absolute GAME CHANGER: Once and for all, the dive gear dilemma of not knowing where to go, who to talk to, or where to even start is OVER. Alexis Jabbour, founder of The Buddy App, talks about how dive gear is now connecting people through sharing. Anyone can add gear to their dive log (even if it's rental) so nothing gets lost. Dive buddies can see what their friends are wearing and literally click on it to learn more, including links to buy it right then and there. Influencers, Dive Shops and “Buddy Explorers” even have ways to add their affiliate links or get sponsored gear directly on their profile. Professional can even link back to their home dive shop! Buddy is quickly changing the landscape for diving, making it easier and more accessible for more people. This revolutionary dive app is streamlining the entire gear debacle that's gone on far too long. The Buddy Dive Log app has everything else in a dive log divers need to get the most out of this lifestyle: Social media links, tipping functions, galleries, filters, and even validation of your dives, including a place to verify your certifications and professional status (with all agencies like PADI, NAUI, SSI, SDI, CMAS, and more). Go check out the App and don't forget to add me as a Buddy! This is the only app that verifies and works for ALL agencies. So any active professional can verify any diver, on any dive. The other big thing that caught my attention was the fact that in books- a signature or stamp leaves with the diver or student- so there's no way for that professional to show how many logs they've verified, and they both lose contact as soon as that book closes. I'm 100% all for these, vs paper that can get lost, destroyed, and doesn't keep that connection on both ends. As a professional or dive instructor, you only need to fill out one log for the dive, then send out for validation to your divers or students. That alone sold me on this feature! Although I've already interviewed Alexis in Hawaii (on site) about this app, I keep finding new things that make it special, and are worth discussing on my channel. With the official 2023 Summer now entering the holiday season, Buddy is making waves throughout the industry as a disruptive platform that's quickly changing the landscape for scuba divers. The world of diving is going to look very different 1-2 years from now, with the rapid adoption of the Buddy platform. The Buddy Dive Log app has the best of all the agencies like PADI, SSI, NAUI, and goes well beyond the capabilities of Manufacturer apps like Garmin, Suunto, Apple Watch and many others. It combines all the features into one, without those barriers that divide the already-small industry even smaller. Connecting buddies of ALL agencies is the skeleton key of all future growth. It's clean, works smoothly, easy to use, and is easily the most comprehensive diver app YET. It got me excited enough to continue interviewing and discussing this incredible new tool. Not to worry, it's even set up for those that aren't certified yet, so literally anyone can download this app (and of course, it's free). In my continuing showcase series of the Buddy App, we talk about Social Media and the integration of the “Sharebuilder” feature. While the app's ability to integrate with social media accounts might seem like a meager topic on the surface - social is now the bloodline of Scuba Diving interest, and is indispensable for attracting new divers. We discuss the importance of social (for all its flaws) in diving, due to its visual nature. Alexis and her Buddy team did not overlook this critical element of the diving community, and went above and beyond. Although I've already interviewed Alexis in Hawaii (on site) about this app, I keep finding new things that make it special, and are worth discussing on my channel. Scuba Diving ALAS has a company supporting the entire sport, including both recreational, professional and social media enthusiasts. Like many other outdoor sports and recreational activities, the Dive with buddy team is catching scuba diving up. This interview takes place with the mastermind behind the Buddy App, Alexis Jabbour. With the 2023 launch happening as we speak, Buddy is quickly making waves throughout the industry as a disruptive platform. It's changing the landscape for scuba divers, freedivers, and snorkelers with constant new features rolling out with each monthly update. Not only can dives be validated and buddies be added to a dive that show up in the dive log, it's also an easy way to find and tip those who deserve it! The Buddy Dive Log app has the best of all the agencies like PADI, SSI, NAUI, and goes well beyond the capabilities of Manufacturer apps like Garmin, Suunto, Apple Watch and many others. It combines all the features into one, doing away with those stubborn barriers that divide the already-small industry. Connecting buddies of ALL agencies is the skeleton key of all future growth in this industry. Making sure hardworking scuba instructors, boat hands, and divemasters get paid is equally important. This app, yet again, fixes that lingering rankle within the dive industry. Further, Alexis talks about the Charter and Dive shops features that allow those QR codes to be posted for those who pool their tips, along with an upcoming “booking platform” for facilities, shops, charters and professional operations. It's clean, smooth, easy to use, and is EASILY the most comprehensive diver app YET. It got me excited enough to continue interviewing and discussing this incredible new tool, and making it part of our series here on The Scuba Diving Channel. With the Summer 2023 launch happening as we speak, Buddy is making waves throughout the industry as a disruptive platform. The Buddy Dive Log app has the best of all the agencies like PADI, SSI, NAUI, and goes well beyond the capabilities of manufacturer apps like Garmin, Suunto, Apple Watch and many others. Buddy combines all the features into one, without those segment barriers that divide our already small industry even smaller. And arguably one of the most important features of all, the Share Builder allows divers to customize, then post to social media directly from the app, toggling what (and what not) to display. Further, it allows you to connect your money accounts for tipping and bookings, verifies your certifications or professional memberships (regardless of agency), lets you share your gear, and of course has all the other fun dive log stuff (literally everything) including a photo filter for underwater adjustments. It has the ability to “friend” and chat with other divers directly on the platform, and helps you find divers in a specific area that match your skill level. It's clean, works smoothly, it's easy to use, and looks to be the most comprehensive diver app YET. It got me excited enough to continue interviewing and discussing this incredible new tool (and yup, I use it now!). Not to worry, it's even set up for those that aren't certified yet, so literally anyone can download this app. It's also important to note this app is free in its full form, so no pesky click bait ads. Kenny and Mike break down a highly contentious subject within the dive training community: Should students be taught all the required scuba skills only AFTER gaining the ability to hover in a neutrally buoyant position? Many supporters have been quoted saying they'll “die on this hill”. But since this is NOT the widely accepted industry standard, at least for the WRSTC or most major training agencies (like PADI, NAUI, SDI, SSI and others)... should it be the norm, or is it simply overkill? Is it realistic in every single scenario with every single student, and is it even practical for group classes within a typical budget of an Open Water certification course? There is no doubt an issue with poor neutral buoyancy training, as most working divemasters and instructors will vehemently profess, but is this the solution or is there another angle? This topic can be seen stirring pretty strong opinions in any given scuba forum or comment thread, so we decided to discuss it point blank. – Regular Guest Michael Kest is a jury trial attorney for civil litigation, and an experienced scuba instructor. He's worked many dive shops, charter boats, and has taught independently in locations ranging from Florida to Hawaii. Mike has also been a Divemaster for Epcot's Dive Quest program at Disney for over 15 years, leading tens of thousands of Guests in the Seas aquarium on a weekly basis. He played football for FSU, he's a father of three, a husband, a coach, and regularly dives in South Florida for fun on his spare time. - Find Kenny Dyal on the Buddy App for iOS Find Kenny Dyal on the Buddy App for Android - Kenny Dyal is the host of The Scuba Diving Podcast: TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@kenny_dyal Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sweetwater_scuba Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/realkennydyal LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/kennydyal Twitter: https://twitter.com/RealKennyDyal www.sweetwaterscuba.com

Alexis Jabbour is the mastermind behind the Buddy App, now 2.5 years in the making! With the June 2023 launch happening as we speak, Buddy is perhaps the most important step forward the dive industry will see in a generation. Creating a platform that FINALLY gets divers from all walks of life into a single place is injecting a new level of fun, but importantly… CONNECTION! It helps industry leaders make more money, makes it easier to market themselves, and helps everyday divers connect with other divers easier than anything that's ever been made. This helps any scuba instructor, dive shop, charter or facility using ANY agency ( PADI, NAUI, SSI, SDI, BSAC, CMAS, etc). It allows Divemasters and Instructors to “Verify” dives, making it easier than ever to keep people up to date, legit, and more actively engaged with the community. Further, it allows you to connect your money accounts for tipping and bookings, verifies your certifications or professional memberships, lets you share your gear, and of course has all the other fun dive log stuff (literally everything) including a photo filter for underwater adjustments. It has the ability to “friend” and chat with other divers directly on the platform, and helps you find divers in a specific area that match your skill level. Not to worry, it's setup for Freedivers, Snorkelers, for those that aren't certified yet, and on the horizon: The Mermaid community! Christopher J. Gervais is an award winning producer. His animated film Dream won a 2017 Golden Lion for film and a Silver Lion for music at the 64th Annual International Festival of Creativity. He is environmental and marine scientist and has decades of experience in field work and research with multiple academic institutions and natural history museums. A former science and social studies teacher, later an administrator, he became the youngest principal of a public school in the state of Florida. While a graduate student, Christopher conducted fieldwork and research to study the Pleistocene Mega fauna and their fossils that were deposited over 10,000 years ago. His study of these extinct species informs his concerns for preserving biodiversity and was a significant factor in the founding of the WCFF. Christopher was one of the first scientists to conduct underwater vertebrate paleontology research. He is a professional, advanced scuba diver with NAUI, PADI, SSI and NASDS with over 2,500 logged dives. Christopher founded the WCFF in 2010 using his life savings to get the organization off the ground and has maintained the operations since then. He is a philanthropic supporter of conservation organizations across the globe. Christopher is President of the International Exploration Society, Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society, member of the Ocean Geographic Society, friend of American Philosophical Society.“I've been fortunate over the last 13 years to meet some of the world's leading conservationists. Dr. Sylvia Earl, David Attenborough, Jane Goodall, his Royal Highness Prince Khaled bin Sultan of Saudi Arabia, who came to the film festival in 2014, where we showed some films from his foundation. And there have been a number of others, award-winning filmmakers, and a number of celebrities that have come to the film festival, Academy Award Winner James Cromwell. We've had other celebrities, from Paul Giamatti to Alec Baldwin to Sigourney Weaver, all of whom may have a passion for, if not saving wildlife, then for the environment. And I have found them very humble, very easy to speak to, and I'm immensely grateful that they took the time to come to WCFF from their busy schedule. And we hope to build more relationships. So, we continue to grow, we continue to evolve. These global partnerships are helpful. And there have been a number of challenges. The biggest challenge right now that I have is I have the biggest fight of my life. In September of 2021, I was diagnosed with stage three liver cancer. And unfortunately, it's progressed now to where it's stage four and, you know, it's something that I have to fight with every day. Today I have a lot of energy. I feel good. Some days I do not get out of bed, and unfortunately, the cancer that I have is contracted by maybe 1% of the population. It's a cancer delivered by bile ducts. So there's not a lot of research on it. There's not a lot of studies on it. My physicians have been very candid with me. They cannot cure this. So I don't know how much time I have, whether it's five months, five years, or 50 more years. What they're doing right now is holding it at bay and keeping me alive.”www.wcff.orgwww.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.orgIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcast

So we met and we discussed how long this would be, and what the content would be. And they said, "Choose several species that are impacted right now." And we chose the baby harp seal because Canada in their great wisdom decided to start hunting baby seals again in eastern Canada. A rhino was chosen because, at that time, rhino poaching was the highest level it had ever been in history. I think more than 2,000 rhinos were killed that year just in South Africa alone, not even counting other countries. We chose to the humpback whale because some imbecile within the United States government decided that there were enough humpback whales now that we could start resuming whale hunting in this country. And the pelican was chosen because of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, which had devastating consequences. And we still have those consequences today. The oil is still there. It's just under the sand. It's not like all the oil has been cleaned up. We were very fortunate that that animation was presented at Cannes that year and it won two awards, a Golden Lion and a Silver Lion Award.”www.wcff.orgwww.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.orgIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcast

Christopher is President of the International Exploration Society, Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society, member of the Ocean Geographic Society, friend of American Philosophical Society.“There are hundreds of environmental film festivals, and that's not us. We are really the only pure Wildlife Conservation Film Festival. And we've elected to have these events in large urban areas simply because of the disconnect with nature. Whether we've had it in Beijing or San Paulo, or places in Europe, we find that the people living in these large urban areas are just not aware of the wildlife and the biodiversity around them. Most people in New York City have never been to the Catskills or the Adirondacks, which is just a short drive from Manhattan. And there you can see wildlife year round, all four seasons. And that's one of the purposes of the festival. Our mission is very straightforward and simple: to inform, engage, and inspire wildlife conservation through the power of film and media. And we continue to build our global partnerships worldwide. We'll be returning to Monterey, Mexico, probably in late May or June for our third annual event there. We'll be in Rome and Naples, Italy in late September. And we're in negotiation with the United Arab Emirates about doing a film festival there in the Middle East for very late 2023 or early 2024. And through these partnerships, we get the word out, and that is our message. It gives me a purpose in what I do. I do not call it a job. I do not even call it a career. I call it life's mission. It's because of the hundreds of films that could be made annually, whether they're short or features from independent filmmakers that would certainly make an impact on saving a species and or an ecosystem. And when I am gone, there will be others that will run this in my place. I hope that's not for another 50 years, but we'll see. There are certain things I can and cannot control, but hopefully, it will keep me alive for a long time, and we can do quite a bit more.”www.wcff.orgwww.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.orgIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcast

“I've been fortunate over the last 13 years to meet some of the world's leading conservationists. What they're doing right now is holding it at bay and keeping me alive.”Christopher J. So we met and we discussed how long this would be, and what the content would be. And they said, "Choose several species that are impacted right now." And we chose the baby harp seal because Canada in their great wisdom decided to start hunting baby seals again in eastern Canada. Alexis Jabbour speaks with Kenny about the brand new “Buddy App” rolling out for scuba divers and freedivers. This is FINALLY an app that works for all agencies (PADI, NAUI, SSI, SDI, BSAC, CMAS, etc), but also allows you to connect your money accounts for tipping and bookings, verifies your certifications or professional memberships, let's you share your gear, and of course has all the other fun dive log stuff (literally everything). It has the ability to friend and chat with other divers directly on the platform as well. It's clean, works smoothly, easy to use, and looks to be the most promising diver app yet. It was enough to prompt an impromptu interview after someone flagged down Kenny to show him the app right on the tradeshow floor. BONUS: It also has a business interface for diving professionals, rolling out around the time of this episode publishing. *This actual interview took place at DEMA, in November 2022. Since then, Kenny has been in regular contact with Alexis on the development of the Buddy App, and is an avid user. Whether you believe the swim tests should be stringent, are a waste of precious bottom time, can scare an otherwise good diver out of the rest of the class, or are a crucial evaluation point to move forward, you'll love this chat between two experience instructors. Michael Kest and Kenny Dyal talk about the swim test requirements for Open Water Scuba Certification, and debate the relevance it has in training new scuba divers. The ISO 24801-2 Open Water Scuba Diver standards and how they apply to agencies like NAUI, PADI, SSI, SDI etc., are also explained. They further explain why scuba diving must be taught by real people in an actual setting, and why classroom teaching of skills is generally fruitless. – Michael Kest is a jury trial attorney with his own practice. He's an active dive instructor with experience that ranges from working dive boats in South Florida and Hawaii, water safety at Sea World, Disney's Dive Quest, working for dive shops and teaching classes all over the world. He's also a father of three. — Kenny Dyal is the host of The Scuba Diving Podcast: TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@kenny_dyal Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sweetwater_scuba LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/kennydyal Twitter: https://twitter.com/RealKennyDyal www.sweetwaterscuba.com
I hope you enjoy this TWOFER interview, covering two topics that are both singular yet somehow connected: Shawn Chadwick is an independent scuba instructor that teaches privately, as well as for a local dive shop in Venice, FL. We discuss the mutually beneficial dynamic of that relationship, plus an added bonus of being able to teach in TWO different agencies (NAUI and PADI) Shawn talks about finding the famous Megalodon Teeth & other shark's teeth and fossils around the Venice Beach area, as well his role in leading excursions. In many cases, Shawn teaches people to scuba dive JUST so they can go out and hunt “Meg Teeth” with him and locally on their own! Shawn has been diving since 1986, teaches private and small group lessons with his company “Trident Scuba” and takes people hunting shark's teeth. "Not all heroes wear capes." This is so true... they sometimes wear fins too! Lyndi Leggett wears fins, and to many she is an absolute superhero. A few years ago, sick of the corporate world Lyndi was trawling through social media and came across an article about David J Lawrence Sr and his son, Scuba Junior. Following surgery, David Jr was rendered disabled, paralyzed from the neck down. Today, albeit he is still paralyzed on one side, David Jr has regained use of his right side and leads a much more fulfilling life. Lyndi reached out to David Sr asking what it would take for her to open a Scuba Gym in Australia. The Scuba Gym Australia operates out of the Central Coast and provides diving possibilities for people with a vast array of disabilities. Throughout this episode Lyndi talks with passion about the successes of her divers so far (see below for links to the videos of those mentioned during the show) and what the future holds for The Scuba Gym. The Scuba Gym is now a not-for-profit operation and Lyndi holds the golden ticket to the growth of it. Lyndi's dream is to see a Scuba Gym in every major city in Australia. Quite rightly so too. If you would like to help Lyndi in any way possible then get in touch. You can email or send a message to Lyndi directly or through the show links and social media. For those of you that would love to join the scuba gym but are not sure if you can. Lyndi has a qualified dive doctor who can talk to you about your disabilities and confirm if you can be authorised to get in the water and have a go at scuba diving. #getinvolved you'll love it!!
