Teachers have a lot to keep up with when it comes to classroom structure. This is not always helped by new technology, which can sometimes make a complicated job even more so. But there are some new technologies which are actually improving the lives of teachers. ScreenBeam's 1000Edu is one of those pieces of tech, which has shown to better the classroom experience. How has ScreenBeam in the classroom made the classroom experience better for both teachers and students? On this episode of Collaborative Tech Talk, David Lopez, Director of Education Strategy at ScreenBeam, speaks with Suzanne Gardner, First Grade Teacher of State Bridge Crossing Elementary at Fulton County Schools, about how the ScreenBeam in the classroom has improved things for Gardner and her school. For one thing, Gardner is very much a supporter of new technologies, as she has seen first-hand how it can help students. “It's definitely something that we use and it's a wonderful tool,” says Gardner, mentioning that her students use iPads and older students use laptops. “So I've worked with a lot of technology that has either been one-to-one—before this year we were five-to-one…so it was a little limited, but we had to get creative with technology, but technology is such a big part of our classroom that I think that…it's wonderful to support it.”This episode covers:-The ways ScreenBeam can better the classroom experience.-Gardner's history with technology and teaching.-How school curriculums must adapt to new and evolving technologies.Gardner emphasizes the ease of using ScreenBeam technology. ScreenBeam has also changed her perspective on teaching and looking at the new district curriculum. “When I would have my computer connected to the wall, I would teach and then run around to my desk to change the technology, and then run back to them,” says Gardner. But ScreenBeam “took away that pressure. I can just take my laptop, go sit next to a student, I can pull a small group, have my camera in front of me—I'm not connected to one thing, I can move around with my computer.”Suzanne Gardner started teaching third and second graders before her move to first graders. She enjoys the physical hands-on experience that comes with teaching elementary school students and loves how technology like the ScreenBeam 1000Edu has improved the classroom experience for everyone.

Multiple Georgia schools have received hoax threats of an active shooting November 30, including Cambridge High School in Fulton County. According to the Milton Police Department, an unknown source made a 911 call, claiming to be a Cambridge teacher shortly after 11 a.m. Police say the caller claimed shots had been fired at the school. Milton Police contacted Cambridge High's administration, which reported no incidents they were aware of though they did put the school on a hard lockdown. Out of an abundance of caution, officers did a sweep of the school while students remained inside classrooms. Police say they found no indication of shots fired, leaving the campus after determining the 911 call was a hoax. Fulton County Schools also said no weapons were found on campus. FCS spokesperson Brian Noyes said no other FCS schools have received calls Nov. 30. At least six schools across the state received hoax phone calls November 30. At the time of publishing, no shooters or injuries have been reported. The first reports were of a gunman near the Savannah Early College campus. Savannah Mayor Van Johnson said no threats were found, but students were evacuated. Buckhead Heritage Society, the city of Atlanta and Mayor Andre Dickens have restored the historical name of Bagley Park on Pharr Road. Atlanta Councilmember Howard Shook submitted the legislation to reinstate the original name of the park. Atlanta City Council passed it unanimously November 21. In the 1870s, freed slaved founded Mt. Olive African Methodist Episcopal Church off Pharr Road. In 1929, William Bagley purchased six lots there after being forced to flee his 84-acre Forsyth County farm in 1912. He was a well-respected community leader. While developer Frank C. Owens laid out a formal neighborhood that he called Macedonia Park in 1921, the area became known colloquially as Bagley Park. At its peak, around 400 families called Bagley Park home. Black-owned businesses, including a grocery store, a restaurant and a blacksmith, served them. It was also home to several churches, including Mt. Olive Methodist Episcopal Church and an associated cemetery. William Bagley died in 1939, and he and his wife, Ida, are interred in Mt. Olive cemetery. The leading talents behind the Broadway's “Anastasia” are celebrating their touring debuts during the 25th anniversary of the namesake film, “Anastasia.” Twenty-three-year-old Veronica Stern takes the stage as Anya alongside costars Willem Butler, 23, as Dmitry and 32-year-old Ben Edquist as Gleb. Playing as part of Regions Bank Broadway in Atlanta's 2022/2023 season, the Atlanta premiere engagement of “Anastasia” will play December 6 through 11. This journey to the past transports audiences from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s, as a brave young woman sets out to discover the mystery of her past. Pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer determined to silence her, Anya enlists the aid of a dashing conman and a lovable ex-aristocrat. Together, they embark on an epic adventure to help her find home, love and family. The leading trio says they were exposed to theatre early on in their lives and immediately fell in love. Stern hails from New York where she grew up going to Broadway musicals and at around 12 years old, attended a performing arts summer camp. Butler said he was around four years old when he saw his brother in theater. Edquist recalls “stealing and eating the prop bagels” backstage of “The Fiddler on the Roof.” The rest is history. Unlike many Broadway musicals, audiences have already met most of the characters thanks to the film. One of the biggest differences, however, is Edquist's character Gleb replacing the movie's villain, Rasputin. Additionally, Butler said he thinks the stage version of Dmitry is grittier and dirtier than the movie version. Audiences get to see more of what he has been through during the revolution. James D. Childs has been selected to succeed Father William Rowland, S.M. as the first lay president in the school's 122-year history. After an extensive global search, Childs was selected as Marist School's next president effective July 1, 2023. Originally from South Bend, Indiana, Childs is the current president at Bishop O'Dowd High School in the Diocese of Oakland, California. He served as O'Dowd's principal from 2016 to 2018 until being appointed president in 2018. During Childs' tenure at O'Dowd, an urban Catholic high school with an enrollment of 1,250, he has provided mission-inspired and charism-charged leadership; completed a successful $40 million capital campaign for the construction of a new building; oversaw $4 million in capital enhancements to the campus; and worked with a dedicated faculty and staff to successfully implement a rigorous, college-preparatory curriculum. Prior to O'Dowd, Childs served as president and principal at Mission College Preparatory Catholic in California, and before that as a religion teacher and director of spiritual life at Catholic schools in Indiana and North Carolina. Childs earned a bachelor's degree in English, Philosophy and Theology from the University of Notre Dame, going on to earn a Master of Theological Studies in Systematic Theology. He also holds a Master of Education in Catholic School Leadership from Marymount University. He is the co-author of two books and several articles focused on imaginative teaching of high school religion class. J.D. and his wife, Kate, have four children, ages 21, 18, 15 and 10. The city of Atlanta is investing an additional $9.5 million in increased pay for the city's workforce, including its first responders. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens previously announced a 2% cost-of-living adjustment for city employees, along with enhanced pay and bonuses for public safety and frontline workers, as part of his fiscal year 2023 budget passed in June. City employees will see enhanced cost-of-living adjustments in their paychecks starting in January, with public safety personnel seeing even greater increases to aid in the recruitment and retention of police, corrections and E-911 personnel. The city will increase the planned cost-of-living adjustment from 2% to 3.5%. To aid in the recognition and retention of the City's public safety personnel, the city will make further enhancements, including — A total 9% cost-of-living adjustment for sworn Atlanta Police Department officers and E-911 personnel, 7% higher than previously announced, and coming on top of retention bonuses already awarded this year; A total 7% cost-of-living adjustment for sworn Atlanta Department of Corrections officers, 5% higher than previously announced; and An additional 1.5% cost-of-living adjustment for sworn Atlanta Fire Rescue Department personnel on top of already implemented raises this year which ranged from 7% to 15.5%. City revenues, particularly from sales taxes and business licenses, have outperformed projections, leaving Atlanta with a stronger than expected reserve fund. Even after these investments, the city said it will maintain a healthy reserve fund exceeding requirements.

Fulton County School District is in Atlanta GA and serves approximately 94,000 students that attend classes in 58 elementary schools, 19 middle schools, 15 high schools, and seven charter schools. Erin also supports teachers with inspiration via her InspirED blog at inspirededucation.info, the podcast Teacher's Pep Rally, and a workshop series called The Happy Teacher. On today's show, Erin shares with us how and when her passion for Disney started and how she turned that passion into an incredible teacher workshop themed after the Seven Dwarfs, hence the name Happy Teacher! Erin's workshops, which are on location down at Walt Disney World, help teachers reignite their passion for education and the profession of teaching. She explains how she capitalizes on being so close to the Most Magical Place on Earth to inspire, recharge, and encourage her participating teachers to start having fun again in their classrooms.   Erin also discusses on the show her work in the Fulton County Schools and how she brings a little bit of the Magic with her into each building she enters. She also shares with us how she has and has seen Disney being used in classrooms that will definitely make you Happy. Erin is an incredible educator and we are sure you will enjoy hearing about her passion and Disney fandom as she continues to inspire and make us all a little less Grumpy, Dopey, Sleepy, Bashful, Sneezy, and a little more Happy and a lot more like the Doc's of Education we all know we are.  We hope you enjoy today's show and find Erin as rejuvenating and uplifting as we do! Episode #1: Clifford Jones, Chief Academic Officer | Educational Leader | Student Success Advocate In today's episode, Todd sat down with Clifford Jones of Fulton County Schools. It is no secret that the field of education has been fundamentally transformed by the COVID-19 epidemic and the application of immersive, personalized, interactive, and instructional technologies. Education and technology have become inextricably linked and will continue to meld in the future. And, while students may be digital natives, it is possible that their instructors and families are not. Leaders in the field of education will need to bridge this gap while ensuring that students continue to learn and grow to be competitive in this increasingly digital world. I presently serve as Chief Academic Officer with the Fulton County (Georgia) Schools, where I manage all curriculum and instruction for more than 93K students districtwide. During my tenure with the district, I have accomplished a great many things of which I am proud, including: Driving improvements in individual schools' ratings, ACT scores, and College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) statistics—while saving $10M+ in costs. Building a diverse new portfolio of schools, including the transition of 2 alternative education schools to blended learning high schools, and developing 2 new magnet STEM academies. Creating a culture that values diversity, inclusivity, sensitivity, and emotional intelligence methodologies for every grade level of student. Leading the highest performing charter school in the state of Georgia. Cartersville man now faces murder, three other counts following Sunday evening shooting. Politics: District 14 GOP hopefuls John Cowan, Marjorie Taylor Greene in televised debate July 19-20. Floyd Democrats set virtual meeting for Thursday. Business: Prime downtown Rome spot on the market for $450,000 — with parking. Ware Mechanical Weather Center: Another steamer on the way with a heat index of 98. Rain possible on Independence Day, that evening. Truett’s Chick-Fil-A Sports Report: Amid pandemic, a centennial celebration for the Negro Leagues. MLB camps open Wednesday. Rant of the Day: "Upon further review ..." Keep a sharp eye on your sports feeds in coming days -- even if you don't like what you're about to read. Or hear. So what have we seen and heard -- all from reputable news and sports media? Ryan Zimmerman of the Washington Nationals says no thanks to Major League Baseball's shortened season, which technically starts with training camps on Wednesday. At least one other Nats' player has joined him. Other MLB teams are reporting players and coaches who have tested positive, including Minnesota. And as our colleague John McClellan points out, the most recent extension of social distancing and other pubic health protocols by Georgia's governor overlaps with the first weekend of high school football scrimmages. We imagine they'll find a way to properly social distance to comply but it will be tough. And should we worry that Fulton County Schools has opted to delay its start of the new year by a full week -- so far. High schools in Gwinnett County also report four coronavirus cases -- we hear a mix of players and coaches -- and the Georgia High School Association again is reminding schools to report positive virus tests. On Monday, we saw the first official report that a football conference -- the storied Ivy League -- was thinking of switching football to spring. Some college football teams already are canceling nonconference games. At Clemson, 37 players, coaches and staff have tested positive for the coronavirus. That follows the report from LSU. In Alabama, the loss of The Tide could cost the state more than $2 billion. A study from 2015-16 concluded Tuscaloosa alone could see $25 million in game-weekend revenue vanish with each game canceled. Some NBA players are skeptical of the season set to resume, including a lifestyle in the Disney bubble throughout the run. So who do we blame? We see it as a rushing penalty. Too many governors, Georgia's included, preached the need to reopen our state. On Monday, Brian Kemp extended the state's public health emergency until Aug. 11. That includes much-less stringent social distancing rules as well. He's busy taking selfies with him wearing a mask and urging Georgians to do the same. That's way short of what other governors are doing -- ordering masks if you're in public. And yet, the sports machines of America continue to hype the hype about sports being back. Yes, but so is the coronavirus. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-druckenmiller/support

Welcome back to the “Neuroscience Meets SEL Podcast” episode #24 this is Andrea Samadi. This interview will also be available on YouTube. Our very special guest today, Dr. Jeff Rose, is the founder of Leading Ed Solutions[i], a community of school superintendents and leaders providing solutions, strategy and support so that no one has to lead alone. His successful podcast, Leading Education[ii] focuses on innovative conversations surrounding the most important topics that our modern schools face that are relevant to anyone who wants to lead in education and beyond. The topics he tackles are applicable to any leadership position, providing the most up to date ideas and strategies around these enormous concepts that require new ways of thinking for improvement and change. Jeff has a proven track record of innovation and an unrelenting focus on student achievement. He’s the former Superintendent of Fulton County Schools (which is Atlanta, Georgia’s 4th largest school district) responsible for the leadership, administration and management of over 96,000 students, 105 schools, 14,000 employees and a $1.1 billion general fund budget. During his 23 years in education, he has served as a classroom teacher, principal and a director of school improvement.  Welcome Jeff. Thank you so much for coming on the podcast today to share what you are doing to support educational leadership.Jeff, I love your work and your podcast inspired me to get moving on mine over the summer. I want to dive into some questions to hear your perspective on a few of the topics that I thought were the most relevant in our schools and communities today.Q1:  I’ve heard you describe education as “the perfect mess” because when you are working, you will have challenges, and everyone has an opinion about these challenges. I’ve also heard this as it relates to business. When you are taking action, things will go wrong and it can all feel like a mess. When you are doing nothing, you won’t have problems to solve, but also won’t have any impact for change. What led you to launch your company, Leading Ed solutions and tackle some of the most challenging problems education has seen in the past few decades to impact change and when did you first think about starting this idea?Q2: There are so many important concepts that you speak about—I love hearing your point of view— but one concept stuck out to me from the earlier episodes when you spoke about how lonely leadership is, when you first felt being lonely at the top and how you got used to this feeling. Unless someone is walking in the shoes of a school superintendent, administrator, or District leader, (or even equate this to those who lead in the corporate world) I know it could be easy to make up what others think your job entails and say things like “Oh, it must be nice….with their xyz assumption.” Hearing your perspective on what leadership is like for those who are given this responsibility is important for anyone who must learn to lead themselves. (We all have heard that to be a good leader is to be a good follower).[iii] Was this why you launched your podcast to give more insight to bridge this gap that exists between school leadership, schools and the community and shed some light with what this leadership role really entails?Q3: You mention that one of the biggest concerns you hear from parents and the community is the rise in student anxiety these days (episode 4)[iv] and I’m seeing it here in my local community in Chandler, Arizona, USA where this time last year we hit 31child/teen suicides in 15 months.[v] This issue is a huge concern and goes on past the pressure to perform academically in the K-12 system to higher education. (I just heard another podcast by Jay Shetty where he interviewed Laurie Santos[vi] who created the most popular course at Yale to combat this issue when she saw how stressed her students were to perform academically at the beginning of their University career.) Your interview with David Smith and Cathy Murphy from The Summit Counselling Center[vii]  really opened my eyes to the fact that we do need to involve the community to bring more awareness and discussion around mental health issues for today’s students. What do you think is a good call to action for parents to begin this dialogue to support their child’s mental health in addition to their own? What about our schools? It still feels like this is a topic is not easy for some people to speak openly about. When I first heard of this rise in suicides in my area I had posters created (inspired by a teen in one of my presentations, who was shocked at the statistics in the US compared to Canada—this was a HS student in Toronto—he stood up and said “how is it that we know what to do when we are on fire—we stop, drop and roll, but we don’t know what to do when someone is struggling mentally or emotionally—at all?” The whole room full of District leaders gasped at his observation.)[viii] So we created posters with a call to action for how to recognize the signs and symptoms of a young person struggling with anxiety, and what number to call if they need additional help—but I still felt the awkwardness around the topic as if schools would be happy to not talk about it at all. How can we change this? How do you see community and faith-based organizations forming stronger relationships with our schools? I know you cover this extensively with a 2-part episode,[ix] but what would be some first steps for a successful school/community partnership?Q4: You covered the widely discussed topic of School Safety and Social Media on episode 19[x] from the end of August. I have always felt that social media and the advancements of technology are where all of the problems begin for our students—because we just didn’t have these problems when we were growing up because we didn’t have the internet—and these challenges create stress for our teachers and parents and make me question about should I or shouldn’t I buy a phone for my kids? Then I listened to this episode and it made me shift my thinking when I heard your guest from www.bark.us talk about their company’s technology and how they have created an algorithm that has avoided 16 credible school shooting threats. I have heard of similar alerts with credit monitoring, but never thought about this technology moving into the schools. Can you share how you came across this technology and how you see this system supporting our schools in the future?  How can we shift people’s perspective to show that technology can solve some of these problems we are seeing with social media, rather than just be the cause of them?Q5: What would be some parting thoughts with your experience in the past few decades leading in education to impact long-lasting and sustainable change in today’s schools? What is your vision for Leading Ed Solutions?Jeff is holding an event for Superintendents in Scottsdale, AZ next month. Here are more details. https://www.leadingedsolutions.com/event-az If anyone is interested in learning more, please contact him directly jeff@leadingedsolutions.comLearn more here https://vimeo.com/334815600Thank you so much for your time, thoughts and ideas today Jeff and for being so accessible for this conversation. He had recently read an EdSurge article regarding struggles that had taken place during a Fulton County Schools’ personalized learning initiative in Atlanta, and in response, Meyer Tweeted, “Can you send me a calendar invite to the meeting where we question the core assumptions of personalized learning?” Though the “invitation” wasn’t directed at anyone in particular, EdSurge decided to take him up on the offer. Last week, Meyer join in on a very special Google On Air Hangout for a live discussion around exactly that topic—the “core assumptions” of personalized learning, where Meyer thinks PL helps or hurts classroom learning, and how technology fits into all of this.
