IT director, Mike Pritchard was one of many who risked their own lives to disarm the gunman that day. He tells his story for the first time on Rock and Rich Uncomfortable.  Mike was with Kendrick Castillo in the final moment he passed away at just 18 years old. He shares these chilling events as if they were straight out of a movie.  Kendrick Castillo was an 18-year-old student who was fatally shot and killed on May 7, 2019. He is a hero who saved countless lives by charging one of the gunman. Mike talks about his seemingly hopeless past, riddled with alcoholism, anger issues and the suicide of his fiancé.  He recounts the moments of the shooting that changed his life forever. Update: The shooter, Devon Erickson, now 20, was convicted in June of 46 charges, including first-degree murder in the death of Kendrick Castillo, an 18-year-old senior hailed as a hero for trying to stop the attack on a classroom at STEM School Highlands Ranch, south of Denver. It's Wednesday June 16th.   Today - Advocates and lawmakers are pushing to boost funding for schools with higher amounts of low income students.    But before we begin, let's go back in time with some Colorado history adapted from historian Derek R Everett's book “Colorado Day by Day”:   Today, we take you back to June 16th, 1934 when a ceremony along the Colorado River in Eagle County dedicated the Dotsero Cutoff. The cutoff is a 38 mile long connection between two railroad lines. It gave Denver a western rail outlet to the rest of the country.    Today it remains in operation as part of the Union Pacific Railroad system and carries passengers via Amtrak.   Now, our feature story.   The number of families that qualify for free or reduced price school lunches is a common indicator for measuring poverty in communities. In Colorado, it's also a major factor in the formula that determines how schools are funded. The jury delivered its verdict after just five hours of deliberation. The 2019 attack left eight students injured and one student, Kendrick Castillo, dead. Castillo was fatally shot as he and several other students stormed Erickson to disarm him.   Colorado's once-a-decade redistricting process is in full swing, led by the state's two new, independent redistricting commissions established by Amendments Y and Z. Despite extensive efforts by nonprofits, political groups and other interes to influence the commissions, so far only twelve people have registered as lobbyists to influence the commissions. Anyone communicating with the commissions as part of their job is required to register as a lobbyist.   Ken Salazar, the former U.S. Interior Secretary and U.S. Senator, will be nominated by President Joe Biden as the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico. My friend Eric Nevin's and his family experienced a school shooting first hand when on May 7, 2019, one occurred at the STEM School Highlands Ranch where all three of his children attend school. The charter school is located in the Denver suburb of Highlands Ranch. One student, Kendrick Castillo, was killed when he engaged the shooter in an attempt to stop him. A heroic act that prevented further fatalities. Eight others were injured. Love in action is listening to understand, not to react. She is a Davidson Young Scholar since 2012 and has received several scholarships and awards for achievements in science, arts and community service. She is an active STEM promoter and is involved in promoting STEM-based activities in schools, clubs and the community. She was selected as the STEM Scout of the Year in 2016-2017 and was selected as one of the 12 delegates to Report to the Nation in the year 2017-2018. She was recognized as a Forbes 30 under 30, for science and invention. She is also an EPA Presidential award winner and is recognized as a Gloria Barron 'Young Hero' Honoree for community impact. Gitanjali has open-sourced her lead detector invention processor and app code for the community and it has been used for other applications. She is continuing to perform accuracy testing in Denver Water for the lead sensor and has partnered with an incubator to create reproducible devices. Gitanjali has won awards for her writing in national and international contests. She published her first book at the age of 9, called, “­Baby Brother Wonders.” The self-illustrated book, based on the story that won 2nd prize in the PBS national writing contest, described the world through her younger brother’s point of view. Gitanjali has also won first place in the International Aviation Art Contest for last four years at the state level. She was a “TIME for Kids” Kid reporter for the 2017-2018 school year and wrote articles bringing awareness to Flint crisis. Apart from writing and art, Gitanjali is part of STEM Scouts and 4-H club. Some of Gitanjali’s hobbies include playing the piano, Indian classical dancing and singing, swimming, fencing, and baking. She has been playing classical music for almost 8 years. She shares her talent of playing piano in local assisted living centers. Gitanjali is on the board of Directors for an organization called Children’s Kindness Network that spreads an anti-bullying message and promotes the importance of kindness in all of us. She conducts workshops in elementary schools and hopes to educate children about kindness when they are still young. Gitanjali interns in summer at the "The 3D printing store" to shadow designers. She is conducting research in the University of Colorado, Denver in the Department of Cell Biology to find a solution for prescription opioid addiction using the latest in genetic engineering. Gitanjali is also working on implementing a Cyberbullying app based on AI/Machine Learning in the community along with a team and they were awarded a grant of $5K from eCybermission (Army Educational Program). She recently gave four TEDx talks three in India and another in Nashville apart from speaking in several girls' and global conference and being a UNICEF panelist about the role of Youth to power the planet. Gitanjali aspires to study genetics and epidemiology. She hopes to keep writing, discovering, and sharing her knowledge in the future.
