Riding Shotgun With Charlie #203 John Castillo Father of Kendrick Castillo While on a trip to Denver to film some shows, Laura Carno (RSWC #188) introduced me to John Castillo. He's the father of a hero, Kendrick Castillo, in the truest sense of the word. Just over 5 years ago, there was a school shooting at the STEM School in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. Two students decided to attack the school and shoot as many people as possible then commit suicide. They entered in two separate locations. According to one of the students, one of the shooters entered a room and yelled to everyone ‘don't move'. Kendrick jumped up and attacked one student, while getting shot in the chest. This gave two other students time to jump up and go after the shooter. One was shot with non-life threatening injuries. Kendrick's injury was fatal. John tells me how he was notified and went to the school. He was texting some other parents, looking for Kendrick. No one saw him. Eventually he made it to the police. There he was able to describe Kendrick and what he was wearing. The officer told him to follow them. They confirmed that Kendrick was shot and died. But John and his wife, Maria, were not able to see Kendrick as his body was at the crime scene. It was several days before he was able to see Kendrick. Just the week before, John and Kendrick were out doing some shooting and training at Front Sight Training Institute in Pahrump, NV. There they learned that the best thing to do is to go after the shooter. Most of the time, the shooter is not expecting someone to fight back. Kendrick knew what he was facing, dying while hiding or dying while fighting and saving others. While in Littleton, I was able to visit Castillo's home. Kendrick's bedroom is a shrine to him and his bravery and heroism. There are lots of posthumous awards from several organizations. There's also awards he earned in robotics. There is also a local brewery, Strange Craft Beer Company, that makes a special brew in honor of Kendrick every year. John gave me a can from the most recent batch of “Kendrick's Ale.” The silver lining is that John and Maria know it wasn't any of the firearms used that are the reason for Kendrick's death. It's the people who wanted to do harm to others before they took their own lives. It's Kendrick who saved lives and gave his for those people. This hasn't turned the Castillos into anti gun people. Quite the opposite. They are totally on board with arming school staff. This led to Laura Carno and John connecting. Laura is with FASTER Colorado FASTER has trained a few thousand school staff in over 300 schools around the country. The program isn't just for teachers. It's for any school staff- secretaries, custodians, or teachers. The program started with Jim Irvine (RSWC #186) after the Sandy Hook tragedy. It's been spreading across the country and currently in Colorado, Ohio, and Arizona. The program takes school staff who want to protect students from learning firearm safety and fundamentals, through trauma first aid, and then into responding to active shooters. I've been through the Level 1 course in Ohio a few years ago. It was very impressive! The active shooter training for my group was done in a real school when school was out of session. John has been able to go out and speak at various rallies around Colorado talking about how arming school staff. is what needs to be done for the people who want the training and are willing to carry in schools. He does this so other parents won't have to go through what he and Maria have gone through. They live close to where Kendrick was put to rest. They visit the site everyday. I think it's time to crack that beer. I've been waiting to have it until I put this show out. Thank you for your heroism. Rest In Peace, Kendrick. Favorite quotes: “Mr. Castillo, Kendrick rushed the shooter.” “We discovered FASTER Colorado, which supports having armed school staff.” “He knew what the consequences and the odds if he didn't act at that moment.” “Mental health threats, or self harm threats, are not the same as a physical threat." “We don't want his life to be in vain that he just rushed a shooter and it was over. There has to be more to it than that.” FASTER Colorado https://fastercolorado.org/ FASTER Saves Lives https://fastersaveslives.org/ Denver 7 News recent story https://www.denver7.com/follow-up/nearly-70-000-donated-to-construct-memorial-to-2019-stem-school-shooting-hero Second Amendment Foundation https://secure.anedot.com/saf/donate?sc=RidingShotgun Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/ Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters. Autonomous trucks, robotics and AI are revolutionizing the mining industry...and now engineering students of all disciplines are being prepared for these fascinating careers at South Dakota Mines!Dr. Jim Rankin, President of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (often called South Dakota Mines) discusses the institution's focus on STEM education and its impact on the mining and mineral industries. SDSMT is one of only five universities in the U.S. to have all three mineral industry disciplines: Geology and Geological Engineering, Mining Engineering and Management, and Materials and Metallurgical Engineering.Beyond mining, the school has a strong emphasis on all engineering disciplines, creating a cross-collaborative learning experience that prepares students for the real world. Hear how this top STEM school has partnered with industry and research collaboratives to give students truly cutting-edge learning experiences in fields that are evolving rapidly.3 Big Takeaways from this episode:South Dakota Mines is one of the top ROI STEM schools in America: What makes this engineering school so valuable for students? The deliberate focus on STEM education, where students can jump into their major on day one. Dr. Rankin recognizes the changing perceptions around higher education - especially those questioning whether the tuition cost is worth it - and has ensured SDSMT's students have a low-cost, high-return education that gives them the knowledge and skills to be successful engineers.Mining has major environmental and national security implications: The more technology evolves, the greater need for rare earth minerals that power things like next-gen batteries and semiconductors. The U.S. has identified 30+ of these minerals that we're sourcing internationally - but should we be mining them here? Dr. Rankin shows us the delicate balance between the environmental impact of mining and the national security issue of sourcing the material elsewhere. The Mining Hub pairs engineering students with industry to do cutting-edge research into Mining 4.0: Launched in partnership with organizations like Caterpillar, the Mining Hub is a multi-disciplinary research incubator doing work with autonomous mining vehicles, artificial intelligence and robotics to develop the latest innovations in the mining industry. Mike was with Kendrick Castillo in the final moment he passed away at just 18 years old. He shares these chilling events as if they were straight out of a movie. Kendrick Castillo was an 18-year-old student who was fatally shot and killed on May 7, 2019. He is a hero who saved countless lives by charging one of the gunman. Mike talks about his seemingly hopeless past, riddled with alcoholism, anger issues and the suicide of his fiancé. He recounts the moments of the shooting that changed his life forever. Update: The shooter, Devon Erickson, now 20, was convicted in June of 46 charges, including first-degree murder in the death of Kendrick Castillo, an 18-year-old senior hailed as a hero for trying to stop the attack on a classroom at STEM School Highlands Ranch, south of Denver. Good Morning, Colorado, you're listening to the Daily Sun-Up with the Colorado Sun. It's Monday June 14th Great Outdoors Colorado executive director Chris Castilian will soon be leading the National Ski Patrol. Today - How he's worked to make the outdoors more accessible and what he'll be working towards in his next role. Before we begin, let's go back in time with some Colorado history adapted from historian Derek R Everett's book “Colorado Day by Day”: Today we're going back to June 2003 when a granite outcropping along the Rocky Mountains eastern front joined the National Register of Historic Places. The outcropping supposedly resembles Beelzebub in profile, and it was named Devil's Head. It's one of the highest points in Douglas County. And perched atop the mountain stands a small building, one of the last manned fire watches in Colorado. Now, our feature story. After four years and a slew of accomplishments at Great Outdoors Colorado -- including helping create the new Fishers Peak State Park -- executive director Chris Castilian is chasing a new adventure. Outdoors reporter Jason Blevins recently interviewed Castilian about his work to make the outdoors more accessible and what comes next as he moves on to head the National Ski Patrol and assist Colorado Mountain College. Jason and reporter Erica Breunlin talked about how Castilian has shaped Colorado parks and communities and what he hopes to achieve at his new post. Jason also recapped ski area visits this last season, which blew past resorts' expectations. This season was the fifth busiest ever, despite the pandemic. Now, resorts are challenged with trying to retain all the skiers they drew next season and beyond. To read more about Castilian's impact on Colorado's outdoors and keep up with ski area numbers, visit coloradosun.com. Thanks for listening. Finally, here are a few stories you should know about today: Recent sightings of gray wolf pups in Colorado for the first time in 80 years will not significantly influence the state's voter-mandated reintroduction of the species. Colorado voters passed a measure requiring Colorado Parks and Wildlife to restore the predators in the state by the end of 2023. A campaign to solicit input and develop a plan is moving forward, with more than 40 meetings among different communities throughout the state, including on the Western Slope and in western Colorado, where the animals will be reintroduced. Colorado's three Republican U.S. Representatives -- Doug Lamborn, Ken Buck and Lauren Boebert -- sent a letter to Gov. Jared Polis last week asking him to end federal unemployment benefits early. But Polis, a Democrat, says Colorado will stick with its plan to pay the benefits until federal aid ends on Sept. 6. Sending back the money allocated by Congress would be bad for individuals, businesses and the economy, he said in a letter back to the representatives. Twenty-five states, all led by Republican governors, are ending federal aid to unemployed workers this month because of how challenging it's been for employers to find employees. Closing arguments in the STEM School shooting case are scheduled to begin this morning. Defense attorneys for Devon Erickson, who is charged with first-degree murder, rested their case Friday afternoon. One of their witnesses was a toxicologist who testified that Erickson had been a near-daily user of cocaine, marijuana and cough syrup and that, combined with long-term sleep deprivation and insomnia, disrupted his behavior and thinking. Erickson is accused of firing a gun two years ago in a Highlands Ranch school classroom. Kendrick Castillo was killed and eight other people were injured. The second defendant in the case was sentenced to life in prison last summer. For more information on all of these stories, visit our website, www.coloradosun.com. Today’s edition materializes thanks to the French Press, open every day from 7 to 7 in Waynesboro for delicious coffee and light treats. Cool snacks, and cold and frozen bevvies. Order in advance on the @cloosiv app or call ahead 540.221.6568. See you there at the French Press? *The number of new cases of COVID-19 in Virginia reported today is 844, a lower number than in recent days. There are another three deaths for a total of 2,054. The rolling seven-day average of positive PCR tests had dropped two tenths of a percentage point to 7.7 percent. All localities in the Thomas Jefferson Health District reported COVID-19 cases today for a total of 47. That breaks down to 24 new cases in Albemarle, 14 in Charlottesville, three in Greene, three in Fluvanna, two in Louisa and one in Nelson. The 7-day positive testing rate in the TJHD is 6.5 percent today, up one from yesterday. The VDH has also began releasing more historical records in the online data portal. Until now, the VDH has only been presenting each day’s information as a snapshot. * The Albemarle Board of Supervisors on Wednesday discussed measures to help stop further spread of COVID-19 but stopped short of adopting an emergency measure to adopt “necessary regulations to prevent the spread of contagious diseases” which would go beyond what has been authorized by Governor Ralph Northam. Virginia entered into phase 3 of the Forward Virginia plan on July 1, which allowed for indoor restaurant dining and gathering of up to 250 people. Phase 2 places that at 50, and Phase 1 capped it at ten. Some Supervisors have expressed concern that staying in phase 3 will lead to more spread, especially as more University of Virginia students return to the community. After a lengthy discussion, they opted not to adopt the ordinance yet but to further refine some of the potential restrictions. Jeff Richardson is the Albemarle County Executive. (proposed emergency ordinance)“So there is consensus with this board to move forward and unless there is a special meeting of this board, we will come back on August 5 and you will take a formal note at your regular meeting on August 5 to adopt this local emergency ordinance,” Richardson said. Supervisor Donna Price said the pause will allow more time to make sure the ordinance is correct and that similar measures can be put in place by the city of Charlottesville and UVA. “And while I don’t believe that we’re waiting on permission from anyone else I think it’s very helpful to coordinate as much as we can with the city of Charlottesville and UVA,” Price said. For full coverage of the emergency ordinance, read Allison Wrabel’s story in the Daily Progress.*Sentara Martha Jefferson will hold a free testing event at Washington Park from 5 to 7 p.m. This event is intended for “communities of color” and registration is not required. Dr. Denise Bonds of the Thomas Jefferson Health District told the Board of Supevrisors said both Sentara Martha Jefferson and UVA have helped with testing so far, but the future is not clear. “I had hoped that UVA would be stepping into the role starting in the next week or so where they would do regular testing events in our community on our behalf,” Bonds said. “They had a plan set up… I got an email last night from the executive vice president of health affair that I think is going to put this in jeopardy.” Dr. Bonds said the plan had been for UVA to pick up the cost of their own staff time and material costs, but that may no longer be the case. The health director also said that Sentara Martha Hospital has notified her they will not be able to do community testing events after this week. “So what went from really widespread testing availability for our community members has now dropped down to our testing team and the CVS commercial sites. And while I think it’s very great that CVS is willing to do it. I will just say that they send it to Quest Labs and you won’t get your result back for ten days. And that is useless. That doesn’t help me if it takes ten days to get a test result back.”We have asked for comment from both the University of Virginia Health System as well as Sentara Martha Jefferson and will bring you more in a future installment. More on this topic on the next episode of the Charlottesville Quarantine Report. *The director of Science, Engineering and STEM for Charlottesville City Schools has teamed up with a pediatrics professor at the University of Virginia to raise money for education supplies for families who may not have the resources. Nigel Standish and Sana Syed are seeking to raise $30,000 to build boxes with measuring tape, scissors, thermometers, and other scientific tools. According to their Go Fund Me page, this would help provide a full year’s materials for families in need whose children attend the city’s six elementary schools. (Go Fund Me page)*Today is a quiet day in government meetings. Three separate groups that make up the Places29 Community Advisory Committee will hold a virtual meeting at 630 p.m. to be introduced to Albemarle’s new planning director. Charles Rapp recently took over the position after serving in a similar role for the town of Culpeper. In an email sent to Community Engagement yesterday, he said the county is getting ready for a transportation study of the Rio Road area. Several developments have been opposed by nearby residents who have concerns about traffic issues. Some of them will have the chance to raise questions at this meeting. There will also be updates on the county’s development dashboards, which are intended to give people a sense of how many more new buildings are on the way. (agenda)Tomorrow, Preservation Virginia will hold a free webinar on “The Role of Historic Preservation in Recovering from the COVID-19 Pandemic.” The event begins at 10 a.m. and registration is required. Wartime efforts during World War 1 were quite peculiar. President Woodrow Wilson fed a flock of sheep on the White House lawn to cut down on landscaping costs. Germans experienced a ban on bratwurst so the intestines of cows could be redirected toward making Zeppelins. And in Russia, Czar Nicholas II banned vodka to keep everyone's head in the game. More than a century later, one wartime effort for fighting COVID-19 might be considered equally as unique – running 3D printers. On this episode of Fund for Teachers – The Podcast, meet the teachers/FFT Fellows on the front lines of this community-wide effort:Jim David, assistant principal of STEM School ChattanoogaMichael Stone, director of innovative learning at Public Education Foundation - ChattanoogaKristin Burrus, digital fabrication ecosystem lead in Hamilton County Schools and VWeLab specialist, andDavid Vanzant, lead chemistry teacher at the STEM School.Interested in joining the effort? [NOTE: this was recorded when the show was named "The Lunar Podcast." It is now "Dark Sky Twelve"] instagram @darkskytwelve twitter@darkskytwelve Dr. Tony Donen is the Principal of STEM School Chattanooga, an award-winning magnet school on the cutting edge in Chattanooga, Tennessee. This place is getting national attention, and it is atypical as can be. So I took my mobile moon rig down to the STEM School campus to see what I could see. We discussed things such as how he got into teaching, why homework is the worst, what the deal is with grades, project-based learning, problems with self-pacing, and other existential matters such as the dichotomous-y nature of current society, the necessity of Math teachers, and the problem with wanting to become an astronaut. Oh, and he also told me he is out to "break school." I think if I would have went to high school at STEM School Chattanooga, I wouldn't have skipped school so much to go rock climbing and meadow strolling. Check out STEM School Chattanooga at https://stemschool.hcde.org/ all opinions are mine and the guests...that is always the case!

Kendrick Ray Castillo gave his life to save others at Denver area STEM school. Communist Chinese Regime's evils to Liu Xiaobo & Liu Xia, but his dying wish is realized!. This disgraceful evil is 45+ years and counting!
The House Judiciary Committee voted on Wednesday to hold Attorney General Bill Barr in “contempt of congress” because of his choices to first skip his second day of scheduled hearings, where the D's celebrated by eating fried chicken, and then claiming executive privilege as the basis to not turn over the full un-redacted Mueller Report to the committee.Alcohol consumption is on the rise, and if you spent any time in the Hard Factor studio you would see that this is VERY true. Surprisingly Europe is slightly down, and so is New Zealand. Asia as a continent is way up and India is leading the charge, up 38%!!We have another hero on our hands. Kendrick Castillo, who charged the micro-penised shooter at STEM School in CO, gave his life trying to save his fellow classmates. This is the second time in recent shootings that a student has given their life by rushing the piece of shit who was dead set on killing innocent people. These guys are heroes, thank you for your service!!!Brought to you by 1800flowers.com Radio Offers --> Enter promo code: HARDFACTOR

Today we have two wonderful guests, Marcy Raymond and Jack McClintock, joining us to talk about creating startups with a meaningful impact on the world of education. Marcy is serial school starter and a STEM education specialist with the Education Services Center of Central Ohio. She is a founder of Metro Early College High School (MECHS), which is Ohio’s very first STEM school and a platform for innovation in school design that many schools across the nation are now based on. Jack is one of the first students to attend and graduate Metro, after which he received a bachelor’s from OSU’s Fisher College of Business and founded G&P Productions. We unbox: The massive undertaking of starting a new school, especially one with such an innovative design philosophy Why doing school differently is a “moral imperative” The goal of The Metro School, and all of the schools that have followed its model The uphill battle of STEM education Why Jack took the risk and jumped in as a founding student of Metro Partnering with OSU, the Battelle Memorial Institute, and the Educational Council to start MECHS Battelle’s “opportunity gap” Why the school is, by design, for all kids – not just “the smart kids” The conversation around starting similar schools in other communities Why students are more engaged at MECHS The habits they teach at MECHS to help students be persistent in any environment Looking to the future, what do the next iterations of STEM schools look like? The poem that Marcy read on the first day of school, “Pioneers! O Pioneers!” Education is dynamic and it cannot be standardized – and as a society, we have to figure out how to effectively provide that to everyone Resources: Learn more at https://www.themetroschool.org/ The Metro School on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Metro-Early-College-High-School-171761588940/ The Metro School on Twitter: https://twitter.com/MetroHS Check out (https://www.gpproductions.tv/) Connect with Jack on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jack-mcclintock-8991592b/ Read: “Pioneers! Discover how STEM Education infuses science, technology, engineering, and mathematics within the Standard Course of Study and enriches courses in the Arts, Career and Technical Education, English Language, Healthful Living, Music, Social Studies, and World Languages as well as Out-of-School programs. STEM Education is one strategy North Carolina is using to support teachers, leaders, and students to build a world-class workforce to prepare students to be career and college ready to enter high skill careers as well as high wage and high demand careers. PK-12 and postsecondary education, with innovation and business partners, worked in unison to develop an exemplar set of Attributes to define characteristics of STEM Education. An outcome of this collaboration resulted in STEM Attribute Implementation Rubrics and Engineering Connections for Grades K-5, Grades 6-8, and Grades 9-12. These rubrics outline the quality indicators of each STEM Attribute in addition to representing varying depths of implementation, or quality, for each attribute. Use these rubrics to self-assess and identify if your school/program is at the “prepared” or a “model” level to be recognized and designated as a North Carolina STEM School/Program or Program of Achievement.
