From reeling in giant fish and hunting alligators with sonar to have you heard about Gen Z bringing helicopter parents to job interviews? Reeling in the Biggins: Fish & Alligator Adventures Father Lands West Virginia Record Catfish While Fishing With His Son A West Virginia father was hoping to catch a small catfish for his 4-year-old son to reel in. Instead, he landed a 72.75-pound blue catfish and set a new state record. Tyler Harmon was fishing the Ohio River near Ravenswood with his young son, Walker, and his own father, Rodney. The three generations had been using cut creek chub minnows when one of their rods suddenly bent. Tyler quickly realized he had hooked a very large fish. He battled it for about 20 minutes, trying to keep his 40-pound line away from underwater brush and the boat's anchor line. When the fish finally reached the boat, young Walker thought his dad had caught a big shark. Tyler's father helped net the fish, and they pulled it aboard. The family suspected it could be a state record, so they took the fish to a nearby bait shop and kept it alive in an aerated tank overnight. The next day, a West Virginia fisheries biologist officially weighed and measured it. The blue catfish weighed 72.75 pounds, measured nearly 48 inches long, and had a girth of 33.5 inches. That was enough to break the previous West Virginia catch-and-release record of 71 pounds. After the official weigh-in, Tyler released the giant catfish back into the Ohio River near where it was caught. And Walker now knows that what looked like a shark was actually a new state-record catfish. Reference: https://www.outdoorlife.com/fishing/west-viriginia-record-blue-catfish/ High-School Angler Helps Find 11-Foot “Cannibal” Gator A Mississippi high-school bass fisherman used his fishing skills — and forward-facing sonar — to help his family locate two alligators during a recent hunt.  Sixteen-year-old Tatum Ceckahrulli, a junior at St. Martin High School, has used sonar for years while fishing. His family decided to try the technology to locate alligators in the Pascagoula River area of south Mississippi. On the first night, the family used sonar to find a nearly seven-foot gator. They snagged it and brought it back to shore to process the meat. The next night, they were looking for something bigger. While traveling through a bayou, Tatum and the group saw a huge splash. They soon realized a large alligator had killed and was feeding on another gator about seven feet long. The hunters waited for the big alligator to surface. After one failed attempt, Tatum hooked it again. The group eventually secured the animal with heavy tackle and a snare. The alligator turned out to be about 11 feet long. Getting it into their 17-foot boat was a challenge, and the normally 15-minute trip back to the ramp took about an hour because of the extra weight. Tatum believes the large gator was old and in poor condition. It had very few teeth and was extremely thin — possibly explaining why it attacked and ate the smaller alligator. The meat from both animals was processed and shared with family and friends. How about if this trend affects those entering the job market for the first time? Helicopter Parenting Takes a New Turn According to News Nation, career experts say more young adults are turning to their parents for help navigating a difficult job market — in some cases, even bringing Mom or Dad along to job interviews. Career coach Sarah Johnston says parents have shown up at job fairs, contacted recruiters on behalf of their children and, occasionally, tried to intervene after a child was dismissed from a job. A survey by resume service Zety found that one in five Gen Z job seekers had a parent attend a job interview with them. Experts say the trend has grown since the pandemic. Johnston says many parents may be stepping in because today's job market is very different from the one they experienced. Young workers face longer job searches, layoffs and new pressures from artificial intelligence and social media. For employers, Johnston recommends keeping the focus on the job candidate. If a parent shows up or calls on behalf of their adult child, hiring managers should politely redirect the conversation to the candidate. She says that while the behavior can seem excessive, many parents are simply trying to help their children succeed in a challenging job market.  Statistics: 20% (Zety Survey): A study of over 1,000 Gen Z workers found that 20% had a parent actually join a job interview—15% in person and 5% virtually.  Parental overinvolvement often extends past the interview room itself, Fox News: 63% of parents have submitted job applications for their children. 53% to 54% have emailed or called hiring managers directly. 21% of candidates had a parent contact a recruiter directly on their behalf. 10% had a parent negotiate a job offer. How do Hiring Managers feel or think when a parent is involved, according to Forbes? The moment a parent shows up, the panel stops assessing the candidate and instead starts asking something entirely different. “How could this person ever meet with a client alone, run a meeting, or take feedback without backup?” Forbes also reported, helicopter parenting is linked to higher anxiety and depression in emerging adults, alongside weaker self-regulation and lower belief in their own capability. The Easiest Breakfast Recipe You'll Ever Make A Quick Breakfast Anyone Can Make: Simple Ingredients, Big Breakfast Flavor EASY RECIPE: Caramel Rolls Meets Monkey Bread BEC's Carmel Roll Monkey Bread Instructions and Ingredients Preheat Oven to 350℉. Use a 9x13” baking dish or tin foil pan (my preference). Grease a baking dish or pan well with Non-Stick Cooking Spray. Ingredients: 2 Cans of Pillsbury Flaky Grands Biscuits. 1 Cup of Flavored Coffee Creamer (Substitute: Vanilla Ice Cream) 1 Cup of Brown Sugar 1 Cup of White Sugar 1 Cup of Butter 1 Tsp Vanilla *********************** ½ Cup Sugar 2 Tbsp Cinnamon   In a pot on Medium Heat melt the butter, stirring frequently while adding in the Brown and White Sugar, Vanilla. The combination should melt together nicely, then add the  Flavored Coffee Creamer (or vanilla ice cream.) Once bubbling, set the pot off to the side to cool. Take the 2 cans of biscuits. Open and pull apart each biscuit, then peel them apart into equal halves. Cut these circles of dough into four (4) pieces. In a large bowl with a lid cover add the cut flour dough pieces, sprinkle the ½ cup sugar and 2 TBSP of Cinnamon. Place the lid securely on the bowl and SHAKE, TOSS, and Shake. The dough pieces should all be equally coated in the cinnamon/sugar mix, if sticking together - break apart and repeat placing the lid and toss, shake again. Take the pot of Carmel, pour ⅓ into the bottom of the well greased dish or pan. Spread until the whole bottom is covered. Then take the coated dough pieces and cover the bottom of the pan with the dough. Pour the remaining Carmel Sauces over the top of the dough. Bake in oven for 25-30 minutes at 350℉, checking frequently after 25 minutes so as not to burn. Take out of the oven once the tops are starting to turn dark brown. While cooling, take a ¼ cup of butter and cut thin slices, placing on top to melt - spreading the melted butter around the whole top. ENJOY!! Pull apart caramel rolls anyone can make! One last note - I use Caramel Macchiato creamer, however use your favorite. Pumpkin Spice creamer, Hazelnut Creamer, or Pecan and toss in some chopped Pecans. Yum Yum! Label Our Beef Petition Available for MCOOL The National MCOOL Coalition is launching a new petition calling on the White House and Congress to restore mandatory country-of-origin labeling, or MCOOL, for beef. The coalition represents farm and ranch groups, rural organizations, consumers, and other agricultural interests. The petition is called “Label Our Beef.” It comes after President Donald Trump temporarily increased the quota for lean beef trimmings by 300-thousand metric tons. That's more than 660 million pounds of additional beef imports allowed between September first and November 30th. The move comes as the U.S. is already importing record amounts of beef, and follows an earlier increase in the beef import quota from Argentina. The MCOOL Coalition says those additional imports make country-of-origin labeling even more important. Supporters say consumers should be able to tell the difference between beef from cattle born, raised and harvested in the United States, and beef produced somewhere else. There is also growing support for MCOOL in Congress. Earlier this month, the Senate Agriculture Committee voted 17-to-6 to advance mandatory country-of-origin labeling as part of the Farm Bill. The coalition is now asking cattle producers, consumers, and supporters of American agriculture to sign and share the petition. Farm Action Fund President Joe Maxwell says if Washington is going to allow hundreds of millions more pounds of imported beef into the country, consumers should at least have the right to know where that beef came from. R-CALF USA President Dave Hyde says MCOOL would give Americans the ability to choose a true product of the USA. And the Coalition for a Prosperous America says every year Congress fails to restore MCOOL is another loss for American ranchers and consumers. The message from the coalition is simple: Label our beef, let consumers decide, and let American ranchers compete. Gelbvieh Cows Rise To The Top Data from the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) shows that Gelbvieh females rank #1 for percent retail product. The 2025 Across-Breed EPD (Expected Progeny Difference) Table, released by the Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) and compiled by geneticists Larry Kuehn and Mark Thallman at the USDA U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC), provides key performance benchmarks for the Gelbvieh breed compared to other beef breeds (using Angus as the baseline). Additionally, historical and cumulative USMARC Germplasm Evaluation (GPE) data highlights several notable performance characteristics of the Gelbvieh breed.  Key Performance Benchmarks Moderate Mature Size: In USMARC multi-breed evaluations, Gelbvieh stands out for having a significantly reduced and moderate mature cow weight (averaging roughly 145 lbs lighter than the Angus baseline). This moderation helps lower herd maintenance costs, making Gelbvieh females highly efficient feed converters. High Yield & Carcass Retail Product: Historically, Gelbvieh has ranked #1 for percent retail product among major evaluated beef breeds in USMARC progress reports, proving their exceptional carcass yield efficiency. The 2025 adjustment factors for Gelbvieh relative to an Angus baseline of 0.0 include:  Birth Weight: +2.9 lbs (Gelbvieh maintains the lowest birth weights among the major Continental options) Weaning Weight: -15.5 lbs Yearling Weight: -27.1 lbs Maternal Milk: +8.2 lbs Marbling Score: -0.37 Ribeye Area: +0.66 sq. in. Fat Thickness: -0.066 in. Carcass Weight: +1.5 lbs  JBS Executive Met With Trump One Day Before Beef Import Announcement New reporting is raising questions about the timing of a meeting between a major JBS shareholder and President Donald Trump. According to The Wall Street Journal, Joesley Batista, a major shareholder in Brazilian meatpacker JBS, met with Trump at the White House on August 20th. The meeting reportedly included discussions about whether lowering the 26-percent tariff on Brazilian beef could help reduce high U.S. beef prices. The meeting happened just one day before Trump announced a major expansion of tariff-free beef imports. On August 21st, Trump announced that up to 300-thousand metric tons of beef, or about 661 million pounds, could enter the U.S. over the next 90 days without the additional tariff. Trump said the imported beef would be sold at 25 percent below current market prices. The administration says the move is designed to give consumers some relief from high beef prices while American ranchers rebuild the nation's cattle herd. But cattle groups are concerned. U.S. Cattlemen's Association President Justin Tupper says additional imports could hurt the market signals that are encouraging ranchers to rebuild their herds. National Cattlemen's Beef Association CEO Colin Woodall also says the policy could trade long-term herd expansion for short-term price relief. Montana Farmers Union President Walter Schweitzer says the 300-thousand metric tons sounds like a lot, but represents only about 2 percent of annual U.S. beef consumption. Schweitzer says the bigger concern is how packers and buyers could use the additional supply to pressure cattle prices. The timing of the Batista meeting has also drawn attention because JBS is one of the four largest beef processors in the United States. JBS is headquartered in Brazil but has a major presence in the American beef industry. The reporting does not establish that Batista caused or influenced Trump's decision to expand tariff-free beef imports. The administration had already been looking at ways to increase beef supplies and lower consumer prices. Meanwhile, Trump has also been criticizing consolidation in the beef packing industry and calling for ranchers to have more opportunities to process their own cattle. The bigger question for cattle producers is whether increased imports will actually lower prices for consumers — and whether those imports could weaken the market incentives ranchers need to rebuild the American cattle herd. It's called the Ranchers First Initiative, and USDA says it builds on the Trump Administration's plan announced last October to strengthen the American beef industry.  The initiative focuses on five major areas. First — Helping Ranchers Keep More Heifers USDA is creating a new insurance option called the Beef Retention and National Development, or BRAND, endorsement. The goal is to make it easier for ranchers to keep heifers for breeding instead of sending them to the feedlot. The program would provide insurance protection for the economic value of keeping that heifer as part of the breeding herd for up to two years. Second — Helping Ranchers Recover After Disasters USDA is expanding the use of the Emergency Conservation Program, or ECP, on certain Grassland Conservation Reserve Program acres. That means ranchers could use the program to rebuild fences, water systems and other critical infrastructure after wildfires and other natural disasters. The goal is to get ranches back up and running faster and help protect the nation's cattle inventory. Third — Expanding Local and Regional Beef Processing USDA is expanding its efforts to strengthen smaller, regional beef processors. A new SPUR Guaranteed Loan Program will help processors expand, create cooperatives and increase processing capacity. USDA is also creating a Regional Processor Continuity Effort to help small and mid-sized processors stay in business and become more resilient. The department says nearly 20 percent of current beef processing capacity could become available as the cattle herd grows, creating an opportunity for more American-owned processors and cooperatives. Fourth — Putting More American Beef in Government Food Programs USDA says it will prioritize American-raised beef in federal food purchasing. That could include beef purchased for places such as prisons, hospitals, schools and other government institutions. The goal is to increase demand for American beef while supporting U.S. ranchers and locally owned processors. And Fifth — Bringing More New Ranchers Into the Business USDA says it will expand support for beginning and veteran farmers and ranchers. New producers can receive help through FSA loans, conservation programs, livestock insurance and other resources. USDA also plans to work with the Department of War and the Department of Veterans Affairs to help servicemembers transition into careers in agriculture. Trump says the idea is designed to reduce the power of the country's largest beef processors. In a social media post Friday, August 28 Trump said he has directed legal documents to be prepared that would give farmers and ranchers more freedom to process their own livestock. But the details of the plan are still unclear. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins says USDA plans to announce changes that could include removing outdated regulations, waiving some requirements and making it easier for ranchers to sell meat across state lines. The administration may also provide more support for small meat processors. But the Meat Institute says ranchers already have several options, including custom processing and state or federally inspected facilities. The group warns that allowing uninspected meat to be sold commercially could put food safety and consumer confidence at risk. The National Cattlemen's Beef Association agrees, saying weakening federal meat inspection standards is not the answer. The South Dakota Cattlemen's Association is also opposing the idea. The group says producers can already process animals for their own use, but generally cannot sell uninspected meat commercially. Their message is simple: food safety is not red tape, and consumer confidence is not optional. Trump's proposal comes just one week after his announcement allowing an additional 300-thousand metric tons of imported grinding beef into the United States without the additional tariff. Cattle groups have opposed that move as well, saying more imported beef could pressure cattle prices and discourage ranchers from rebuilding the U.S. herd. Trump says both policies are aimed at lowering beef prices for consumers while helping American ranchers. M and W Beef Packers in Mandan has been in business for more than 50 years, and the three current owners are now retiring. The company was founded in 1974 by Wesley and Vita Moore and has operated continuously ever since. The sale includes the company, a 7-thousand-square-foot USDA-inspected processing plant, a separate garage and shop, and all of the equipment. And despite the owners' decision to retire, the business has been growing. Revenue more than doubled over a three-year period through 2024, reaching 4-point-4 million dollars. The company reported an annual growth rate of more than 20 percent during that time, with gross margins near 24 percent. M and W processes and supplies beef, pork, lamb and bison to restaurants, hotels, grocery stores and institutional customers. Its products are distributed through major companies including Cash-Way, Sysco and US Foods. The company also produces its own Dakota Trails brand of seasonings, which are sold at more than 13 regional retail locations. M and W Beef Packers has been an independent meat processor serving ranchers and customers across the Northern Plains for more than five decades. Farmers, ranchers, volunteer firefighters and hunting access are more connected than you might think. We share this week our own recent scary fire on the ranch in the old farmyard and why supporting rural fire departments helps strengthen communities and builds relationships. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka ‘BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! When a Bird Becomes a Firestarter Some days start normally. Then, around noon, Tigger got a call that the place where he grew up was on fire. Yep. Definitely an Oh $hit Day. We arrived about 30 minutes later to find more than 40 friends, neighbors, and members of the Volunteer Rural Fire Department already fighting the blaze. One building was lost, a couple of others were damaged, and thankfully, the old farmhouse was spared. With the wind changing directions, it could have been so much worse. Tigger's dad, being Dad, immediately found the bright side. "Well, I guess we don't have to tear down that old building anymore." Problem solved. Sort of. What really stood out wasn't just the fire. It was the response. Neighbors showed up. Firefighters showed up. Equipment showed up. People offered trucks, water, machinery, manpower and whatever else might be needed. And they did it for a family that lives about 30 miles away. That's rural America. When something goes wrong, people don't always wait to be asked. They just show up. And we can't thank the New Salem Rural Fire Department firefighters and our neighbors enough. Then came the question: How did the fire start? A bird. That's right. An avian saboteur. The feathered little menace landed on a transformer, created an electrical arc, and apparently decided the ranch needed a little remodeling. Whether it was the bird or a piece of hot metal that hit the ground, the result was the same: buildings burned and a new family story was born. So, remember folks, check if you are under a burn ban. Apparently, somebody needs to explain that to the birds. Rural Fire Departments Need Rural America The humor helps us tell the story, but there's a much more serious point behind it. Rural fire departments are the people who show up when a grass fire jumps a fence, a combine catches fire, lightning starts a pasture blaze, or—apparently—a bird decides to conduct electrical experiments. And many of the people answering those calls are farmers, ranchers, landowners and other community members who volunteer their time. Across the country, volunteer firefighters play an enormous role in protecting rural communities. National Fire Protection Association data shows volunteer firefighter numbers have fallen dramatically—from roughly 898,000 in the 1980s to about 635,000 in recent years, a decline of more than 29%. At the same time, the threat isn't getting smaller. The U.S. Forest Service estimates that millions of acres of livestock grazing and pasture land burn each year. And recent wildfire seasons have shown just how quickly conditions can turn dangerous across the West. That creates a difficult equation: More fire risk. Fewer volunteers. More pressure on the people who remain. Supporting the People Who Protect Rural Land Rural fire departments are generally funded through a combination of local government support, state funding mechanisms, grants, insurance-related revenue and public donations. But firefighting isn't cheap. A single response can cost thousands of dollars, and a major incident can quickly climb into the tens of thousands—or more. That's why supporting your local rural fire department matters. You don't necessarily have to become a firefighter. You can donate. Attend the fundraiser. Buy a ticket to the fire department's annual event. Bid on the silent auction. Help with a fundraiser. Or simply ask your local department what they need. Every bit helps. And there's another reason this matters for those of us who hunt, fish and spend time on private land. Good Relationships Keep Gates Open Hunters depend heavily on relationships with farmers, ranchers and landowners. Those relationships aren't built by knocking on a door five minutes before opening morning and asking, "Can I hunt your place?" They're built over time. You show respect for the property.  You follow the rules.  You don't leave gates open.  You don't drive where you're not supposed to.  You pick up your trash.  You say thank you. And sometimes, supporting the rural community that provides hunting access means supporting the people who protect that community. Rural landowners are often the same people volunteering at the fire department, donating equipment, hosting fundraisers, fighting grass fires and helping their neighbors. When hunters contribute to those communities—not just by asking for access, but by becoming part of the community around that access—it strengthens relationships. And strong relationships can help keep those gates open. The Takeaway That fire at the ranch could have been much worse. Instead, firefighters and neighbors arrived quickly, worked together and protected what they could. We got a reminder of something rural America already knows: When things go bad, your neighbors matter. So support your local rural fire department! If you hunt, fish or enjoy access to private land, support the farmers, ranchers and landowners who make those opportunities possible, too. And if you happen to see a bird sitting on a transformer... Trump Beef Import Plan Gets Support From Agriculture Secretary Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins is backing President Trump's plan to increase beef imports into the United States by temporarily suspending tariffs. Rollins made the comments during a visit to Nebraska, one of the nation's leading cattle-producing states. Speaking at an invite-only federal issues forum with Nebraska Senator Pete Ricketts, Rollins said President Trump is looking for ways to make food more affordable for American consumers. The plan would allow up to 300,000 metric tons of beef to enter the U.S. tariff-free, with much of that beef expected to come from Brazil. Rollins says that amount works out to less than two pounds of beef per American. She also defended the policy by saying food prices in the United States remain relatively low compared to other countries. Rollins' support marks a change from earlier this year. Back in May, the Trump administration considered suspending beef tariffs for 200 days. Reports at the time indicated Rollins pushed back on that proposal, and the plan was eventually halted. Now, Rollins is supporting the expanded import plan, even as several cattle organizations and some members of Congress oppose it. Rollins has also defended President Trump's broader trade policies, saying the current system is fundamentally broken and does not work for American farmers, ranchers, and agriculture. Mexican Cattle Once Again Enter The United States The U.S.-Mexico border is officially back open for livestock imports, marking the first reopening in more than a year. On Monday, Mexican cattle were allowed into the United States through the Douglas, Arizona, port of entry. Two additional ports in New Mexico are expected to reopen over the next two months, assuming the New World screwworm situation does not worsen. But for now, reopening livestock ports along the Texas-Mexico border is not on the table. USDA closed the border in November of 2024 after screwworm reappeared in southern Mexico. A limited reopening was attempted in February of 2025, but imports were halted again in May as the pest moved rapidly north. The closure has been a major blow to Mexico's cattle industry. Before the screwworm crisis, the U.S. imported roughly 1.1 million head of cattle from Mexico each year, accounting for about five percent of total U.S. slaughter. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins says the phased reopening is moving forward based on science and data, with measures in place to protect the U.S. cattle herd. The Douglas port opened Monday. Columbus and Santa Teresa, New Mexico, are expected to follow, with one opening in about 30 days and the other 30 days after that. Rollins says Texas ports will remain closed for now because that's where the most screwworm activity is being seen. Only two active cases remained in Texas as of Monday, although additional cases have been reported since the pest was first confirmed in South Texas in June. Early cattle volumes are expected to be limited. However, reopening the New Mexico ports could bring more significant numbers of Mexican cattle into the U.S. by this fall. And don't expect many of those cattle to head directly to U.S. packing plants. Historically, fed cattle have made up four percent or less of Mexican imports, meaning the impact on fed cattle supplies may not be felt until sometime in 2027. Rebuilding The Nation's Cowherd Cowherd numbers along with cattle supplies are the lowest that they have ever been.  However, producers are slowly rebuilding their herds paying close attention to genetics, economics, efficiency, and potential salvage value of cows. Cattle Industry News Tyson Closes Two Plants, Plans on a Third Tyson Foods is restructuring its beef business, announcing plans to close two facilities and look for a buyer for a third. The company will shut down its beef plant in Joslin, Illinois, and its case-ready facility in Eagle Mountain, Utah. Tyson also plans to sell its beef facility in Pasco, Washington. Tyson says it will concentrate its beef operations around three main plants in Dakota City, Nebraska; Holcomb, Kansas; and Amarillo, Texas. The company says production from the closed facilities will be shifted to other plants, and Tyson plans to eventually add a second shift in Amarillo as cattle supplies become available. Tyson says the move is a response to the historically tight U.S. cattle supply. Recent USDA inventory numbers show heifer retention remains limited, suggesting the cattle herd isn't rebuilding quickly. The closures are another sign of the pressure facing beef processors as fewer cattle are available and margins remain tight. Tyson says it will help affected employees find jobs at other company facilities, but has not said how many workers will be impacted. The company previously closed its Lexington, Nebraska, beef plant in January and reduced Amarillo from two shifts to one. Meanwhile, Cargill and JBS have also closed or repurposed beef facilities as the nation's cattle inventory remains historically tight. The deal ends a three-month dispute that kept the plant shut down. Cargill says the facility will restart in phases, with workers returning on different schedules. Employees will first go through training and prepare equipment and production areas. The Teamsters say the full return-to-work process is expected to take about 30 days. Cargill locked out workers May 20th after union members rejected an earlier contract offer. The two sides spent months negotiating wages, benefits and other issues before reaching the new agreement. Cargill says cattle processing will resume once employees are trained, cattle supplies are available and the plant is ready. The Fort Morgan plant is a major beef processing facility, and its restart comes as the industry continues to deal with historically tight cattle supplies. South Dakota Livestock Inspection Fee Increase A South Dakota legislative committee has approved a 45-cent-per-head increase in the state's livestock ownership inspection fee. The fee currently stands at one dollar per head. The new fee will be one dollar and 45 cents for cattle, horses and mules moved into or out of certain South Dakota counties. Supporters say the increase is needed to keep the state's Brand Board inspection program financially stable. Officials say the program has required nearly 900-thousand dollars in transfers from the Brand Fund over the past two years to cover rising costs, including inspectors, personnel and mileage. The increase is expected to generate more than 600-thousand dollars in its first year, and about 675-thousand dollars annually after that. Some producers opposed the increase, pointing to drought conditions in western South Dakota and the added cost of moving cattle. The measure passed the committee five to one, with Senator Taffy Howard casting the lone vote against it. According to USDA data for the week ending August 16th, Nebraska has the worst pasture conditions in the nation, with 73 percent rated poor or very poor. Colorado is next at 72 percent, followed by Wyoming at 71 percent. South Dakota and Utah are both at 66 percent, while West Virginia comes in at 62 percent. New Mexico is at 58 percent, Arizona at 56 percent, Oklahoma at 51 percent, and Arkansas rounds out the top ten at 48 percent. Nationwide, 48 percent of U.S. pasture and range is rated poor or very poor, including 22 percent rated very poor. Cattle Industry News The Senate Agriculture Committee Will Get Another Shot At Moving The Farm Bill Forward Committee Chairman John Boozman of Arkansas says senators will return in September for another vote after the Farm Bill package failed to advance. Boozman says he expects the committee to vote on the same bill, and he believes Democrats could face pressure from farmers, ranchers and rural communities that want the Farm Bill completed. A major sticking point is SNAP, or food assistance. Democrats want to delay a requirement that states begin sharing the cost of SNAP benefits by two years. Boozman offered a one-year delay, along with other bipartisan provisions. The bill also ran into a numbers problem. Senator Mitch McConnell, who is on medical leave, was able to vote by proxy on amendments. But Senate rules don't allow proxy votes to determine whether a bill advances to the Senate floor. McConnell's absence, along with another Republican voting by proxy, helped prevent the bill from moving forward. During the markup, senators also approved an amendment bringing back mandatory country-of-origin labeling for beef, known as MCOOL. The vote was 16 to 7. It marks the first time the Senate has taken action on beef MCOOL since the 2008 Farm Bill. Boozman says getting the Farm Bill passed before the midterm elections will take a “miracle” — but says it can happen with cooperation. REFERENCE: https://farmpolicynews.illinois.edu/2026/08/senate-farm-bill-fails-ag-committee-to-vote-again-in-september/ Tight Beef Supplies Cut U.S. Exports, But Global Demand Remains Strong U.S. beef exports were down during the first half of 2026, as tight domestic supplies limited the amount of beef available for export. According to USDA data compiled by the U.S. Meat Export Federation, beef exports from January through June totaled about 546,000 metric tons, worth 4-point-74 billion dollars. That's a 9 percent drop in volume compared to the first half of 2025. But strong beef prices around the world helped limit the decline in export value to just 4 percent. The June numbers were actually more encouraging. Export volume was down less than 6 percent, while export value increased nearly 3 percent from June of last year. China continues to be a major challenge for U.S. beef. American beef has been almost completely shut out of China since March of 2025. Excluding China, U.S. beef exports are down just 1 percent, while export value is actually up 6 percent. Exports to some of the biggest markets were lower. Japan was down 8 percent, South Korea dropped 10 percent, Mexico was down 1 percent, and Canada fell 14 percent. But there were some bright spots. Hong Kong beef exports jumped 83 percent, while shipments to Taiwan increased 11 percent. USMEF President Dan Halstrom says global demand for U.S. beef remains very resilient, even with record-high prices. And with potential changes in China's beef import policies later this year, exporters see opportunities ahead — if trade barriers can be overcome. REFERENCE: https://meatingplace.com/tight-beef-supplies-weighing-on-us-exports/ Early Weaning Can Help Ranchers Beat Drought Drought is hitting many major cow-calf areas, and with summer heat spreading across the country, producers are looking for ways to stretch forage supplies. One option is early weaning. Calves can be weaned at around 90 to 120 days old, taking pressure off cows and pastures during late summer and fall. Zoetis veterinarian Dr. Jess Hinrichs says young calves can adapt quickly to dry lots, especially during the warmer months. Before weaning, calves should ideally be vaccinated two to three weeks ahead of time to give their immune systems time to respond. When it's time to wean, producers should provide shade, bedding and plenty of clean, fresh water. Young calves can dehydrate quickly in hot weather. Nutrition is also critical. Calves weighing less than 400 pounds need a high-quality diet with good forage, along with the right balance of energy and protein to support rumen development and growth. Dr. Hinrichs and nutritionist Dr. Blaine Corners recommend working closely with your veterinarian and nutritionist to develop an early-weaning plan. In a drought year, early weaning can help protect your cows, stretch your forage and keep those calves gaining pounds. Border Reopening Planned As Screwworm Safeguards Expend The U.S. is preparing to reopen part of the southern border to Mexican cattle later this month. The Douglas, Arizona, port is scheduled to begin accepting cattle from Sonora on August 24, following more than a year of restrictions tied to New World screwworm. Officials say cattle will face enhanced inspections, treatment, electronic identification and traceability requirements before entering the U.S. The reopening is expected to help restore cattle supplies to feedlots and border communities, while giving officials a chance to evaluate the safeguards before considering additional ports. Meanwhile, efforts continue to control and eventually eradicate New World screwworm, including expanded production and release of sterile flies. JBS Reports Lower Profits Despite Record Sales JBS reported record second-quarter sales of nearly $24 billion, but profits fell as high cattle and pork prices squeezed margins. Adjusted operating income dropped 34%, while the company reported a $102 million net loss, compared with a $528 million profit a year ago. JBS's North American beef business posted record sales, helped by strong beef prices and consumer demand. But tight cattle supplies pushed live cattle costs even higher, putting pressure on packer margins. JBS also announced its Pennsylvania beef plant will stop harvesting cattle August 14, but the facility will remain open as a case-ready operation, preserving about 400 jobs. The company says it plans to invest more than $30 million there over the next decade. Football Player Gets Shocking Surprise Inside His Helmet  A high school football practice in Maumelle, Arkansas, took a frightening turn when a player discovered a venomous cottonmouth snake inside his helmet. The student noticed something moving inside the helmet after warmups and handed it to an assistant coach. A roughly two-foot cottonmouth was found tucked behind the padding. The snake refused to leave, so police officers used water to coax it out and safely place it in a bag. Animal services later identified it as a cottonmouth and released it in a wooded area away from the school. Officials say the player had been wearing the helmet for nearly an hour and was fortunate not to be bitten. He simply switched to another helmet and returned to practice. The incident prompted the coach to remind players to inspect their equipment before putting it on—because sometimes the surprise hiding inside may be more than just a little dust or an insect. Reference: https://www.espn.com/espn/story/_/id/49585268/high-school-football-player-arkansas-finds-viper-helmet Mother, Son & Cousin Rescued After Three Days in Michigan Wilderness A Michigan mother, her 9-year-old son, and a cousin are safe after spending about three days stranded in the wilderness following a tubing trip on the Muskegon River. Sarah Vida, her 9-year-old son Kayden Kovalcik, and Vida's cousin, Jazmin Hock, set out August 4, 2026 from the Maple Island Boat Launch in Newaygo County. When they failed to return, Hock's family became concerned. Vida's car was found at the launch with a broken window, prompting a major search involving drones, dogs and helicopters. The three were found alive Friday afternoon, August 7, 2026, after a Michigan Department of Natural Resources officer spotted footprints and heard their calls for help. They were located in thick woods about a quarter-mile from the Mill Iron Boat Launch in Muskegon County. Officials say the group had been in the wilderness for roughly 72 hours. Two of them had to be carried out, and all three were taken to the hospital. Kayden has since been released, while his mother and Hock remain hospitalized. The family says the group's pool-style rafts broke, leaving them stranded. Hock's phone eventually lost its battery, so they had no way to call for help. They had some protein bars and water, which they gave mostly to Kayden. Family members say the three also ate plants such as flowers floating on water, tree bark and other things, like ants, they could find while trying to survive. Despite the difficult conditions, they stayed together and continued looking for a way out. At one point, they heard traffic and tried to find a nearby road. Family members say the experience has been a powerful reminder about the importance of being prepared for outdoor trips. Reference: https://www.valleynewslive.com/2026/08/10/mother-son-who-went-missing-while-tubing-with-cousin-rescued-after-days-stranded-wilderness/ Stranded Boaters Rescued After 24 Hours on Moreau River According to a social media post by the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks On Thursday, August 6, 2026, first responders successfully assisted two stranded boaters on the Moreau River, a western tributary of Lake Oahe in north central South Dakota.  The boat, carrying two male passengers, had become stuck on a large mud flat and remained immobilized for approximately 24 hours.  A rescue attempt the previous evening using an amphibious SHERP vehicle was unsuccessful due to extremely deep and soft mud. Conservation officers with the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) then deployed one of GFP's airboats to continue the rescue effort. With the help of a local landowner, officers were able to safely launch the airboat from a nearby shoreline and begin the five‑mile trip to the stranded vessel. Upon arrival, they coordinated with other first responders positioned on a bluff roughly half a mile away. Local Emergency Management personnel utilized a drone equipped with a speaker to relay instructions to the boaters, as conservation officers had no direct means of communication with them. This innovative use of technology played a key role in the rescue's success. Conservation officers navigated across the mud, reached the stranded vessel, and safely brought the two men aboard the airboat. The passengers were provided with water and transported back to shore, where EMS staff evaluated their con   GFP conservation officers are frequently called upon to assist in challenging situations due to their specialized equipment, training, and experience. This incident highlights the importance of interagency teamwork between the state, the county and tribal personnel and the effective collaboration that leads to successful outcomes. For the 86th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, August 7 through 16, 2026, the community welcomed roughly 500,000 visitors to the area. The city itself has a population of only about 7,100, making the Rally an extraordinary transformation for the community. For ten days, motorcycles fill the roads, Main Street comes alive, and riders from across the country and around the world gather to celebrate the freedom, camaraderie and culture of motorcycling. The Rally features rides, races, stunt shows, vendors, food and, of course, plenty of live music. But for many riders, the Rally is about more than concerts and motorcycles. It's also an opportunity to explore the spectacular Black Hills of South Dakota. Superior Livestock Video Royale Sale Report The Video Royale sale from Superior Livestock once again found strong demand and buyer confidence.  143,000 head of cattle were marketed at Winnemucca, Nevada, the last weekend of July.  For a complete market report, check out Ranch Channel or click HERE.   MCOOL, Product of USA Update The USDA updated the "Product of USA" label to require that meat, poultry, and egg products come from animals born, raised, slaughtered, and processed entirely in the U.S. While this voluntary standard has gained widespread adoption, lawmakers and ranchers continue pushing Congress for legislation like the American Beef Labeling Act to reinstate broader Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling (mCOOL).  Here are the details on the updated label and the ongoing MCOOL debate: The New Standard: The USDA finalized and implemented the updated "Product of USA" label. It closes previous loopholes by ensuring that animals are 100% American from pasture to plate. Voluntary vs. Mandatory: The updated label is completely voluntary for companies to use, but those who choose to use it must maintain strict records to support their claims. The mCOOL Push: MCOOL would make labeling country-of-origin mandatory for all beef sold in grocery stores rather than just letting companies choose. Oregon Hunting, Fishing & Agriculture Protected as Anti-Hunting Ballot Initiative Falls Short  Oregon's controversial Initiative Petition 28 (IP28), also known as the PEACE Act, has failed to qualify for the November ballot after falling roughly 13,000 valid signatures short of the required threshold. The proposed measure would have removed long-standing exemptions to Oregon's animal cruelty laws, potentially criminalizing legal hunting, fishing, ranching, farming, wildlife management, and other animal-related activities. Conservation groups, agricultural organizations, sportsmen, and bipartisan state leaders strongly opposed the proposal, warning it would have far-reaching impacts on Oregon's rural communities, food production, wildlife management, and outdoor heritage. Supporters of hunting and conservation welcomed the outcome, viewing it as a victory for science-based wildlife management and responsible stewardship. Organizations including the Sportsmen's Alliance and the Oregon Hunters Association argued the measure threatened sustainable conservation programs funded by hunters and anglers, while jeopardizing livelihoods tied to agriculture and ranching. Notably, opposition to the initiative crossed political lines, with Oregon Governor Tina Kotek, Democratic legislative leaders, and Republican lawmakers all publicly rejecting the proposal.  Although the initiative failed to reach the ballot, its chief petitioner acknowledged the campaign was intended to build long-term momentum for similar measures in Oregon and other states, signaling that sportsmen, agricultural producers, and conservation advocates will likely remain engaged in defending regulated hunting, fishing, and farming practices in future election cycles. Opponents believe this year's effort has a stronger chance because organizers have more funding and have used paid signature gatherers, which Oregon law allows. $10,000 Bounty on Wyoming Wolf Hunters Sparks Outrage A Texas social media influencer is offering a $10,000 reward for information identifying anyone who legally harvests a gray wolf from a Yellowstone pack after it leaves the national park, prompting sharp criticism from Wyoming wildlife officials and hunting advocates. Jonas Black announced the bounty on Facebook, saying he wants to identify hunters who harvest wolf 1090F or members of her pack during Wyoming's upcoming wolf season. Black also threatened to publicly expose anyone who legally tags one of the animals. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department called the offer "outrageous," saying it encourages harassment of hunters who are following state law. Wyoming protects the identities of lawful wolf hunters from public disclosure because of past threats and intimidation directed at sportsmen. Wildlife officials emphasize that while wolves are protected inside Yellowstone National Park, they can legally be hunted once they leave park boundaries in designated management areas. Biologists also note that the famous Yellowstone pack is managed like any other wolf pack under the state's science-based wildlife management plan. To protect local wolf populations, Wyoming reduced the number of wolf tags available in the affected hunting unit from eight to four this season. The season opens September 15, and successful wolf hunts remain rare, with statewide hunter success rates averaging only about 3 percent. William Bethel, 28, and Justin Booth, 23, admitted to 20 wildlife-related offenses each, including illegally hunting deer, trespassing, and failing to properly tag harvested animals. Investigators say the pair illegally hunted deer in Columbus-area parks where hunting is prohibited and falsely claimed some of the animals were harvested in Kentucky. According to Outdoor Life, Franklin County Wildlife Officer Mark Williams says the men were motivated by YouTube views and sponsorship deals, calling the case "wildlife commercialization with a modern twist." He says every deer featured on their channel was illegally killed or possessed in some way. The investigation began after park staff discovered bait, tree stands, and trail cameras inside Three Creeks Metro Park. Even after officials removed the equipment, the men returned, allowing investigators to identify and document their activities over the following hunting season. Williams says the case also highlights clues that can help expose illegal hunting, such as transporting an ungutted deer over long distances to conceal where it was actually killed. The two cousins were ordered to pay more than $37,000 in combined fines, fees, and court costs. They will each serve nine days in jail, lose their hunting, fishing, and trapping privileges for five years, and are banned from Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks during that time. Pasture Conditions Worsen Compared To Last Week & Last Year Pasture conditions continue to deteriorate as wild fires claim thousands and thousands of acres.  According to USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service  for the week ending August 2nd, 2026, 46% of the U.S. pasture rated very poor to poor compared to 42% the previous week and 26% the previous year.  Very poor to poor pasture conditions for the 10 states with the worst conditions look like this: Virginia 43%, South Dakota and Montana at 46%, West Virginia at 51%, Utah at 54%, Arizona at 66%, New Mexico at 70%, Nebraska at 71%, Wyoming at 75% and Colorado at 76% very poor to poor pasture conditions.  REFERENCE: https://meatingplace.com/tyson-jbs-shares-rise-after-usda-announces-mexico-cattle-reopening/ Ground Beef Prices Rising The Fastest Beef prices continue to climb as strong consumer demand meets tighter supplies. Since 2022, when U.S. beef production hit record levels, total production has fallen more than 10 percent. During that same period, Choice boxed beef prices have jumped 44 percent, while retail beef prices are nearly 30 percent higher. According to Oklahoma State University livestock marketing specialist Derrell Peel, ground beef prices have climbed even faster. As steaks and premium cuts become more expensive, consumers often switch to ground beef, boosting demand. At the same time, supplies of ground beef have tightened even more than fed beef, creating even greater upward pressure on prices. Packer Shares Increase As Opening To Mexican Cattle Is Announced USDA's decision to begin reopening the border to Mexican cattle imports sent beef packer stocks soaring Monday. Tyson Foods jumped nearly 7 percent, while JBS gained as much as 8 percent as investors welcomed the prospect of more cattle supplies. Imports will resume August 24 through Douglas, Arizona, with every animal undergoing USDA inspection for New World screwworm. While the move could eventually ease record-high cattle prices and improve packer margins, USDA says the reopening will be gradual, meaning immediate relief to the tight cattle supply is unlikely.  REFERENCE: https://meatingplace.com/tyson-jbs-shares-rise-after-usda-announces-mexico-cattle-reopening/ Cattle Association's Response To Southern Border Opening The National Cattlemen's Beef Association says the USDA decision to reopen the border and their response to New World Screwworm has put the US cattle industry in a strong position to begin safe and gradual reopening of the southern border to cattle shipments.  However, the United States Cattlemen's Association is disappointed in USDA's decision to move forward with reopening the southern border to Mexican cattle when they say so many unresolved risks remain for the U.S. herd.  USCA underscores that border policy must be driven by science-based risk assessment and on-the-ground capacity. Farmer Says Neighbor Claimed Part of His Cornfield Through "Squatter's Rights" A New York farmer is fighting to reclaim part of his cornfield after a neighbor claimed ownership through a legal process known as adverse possession, often called "squatter's rights." A little back history,the parcel in the case is a 300-acre farm that was leased by the brothers in the 1970s up until 2009, when the landlord offered to sell the ground. They purchased the property, continuing to farm the ground. Directly adjacent to the 300-acre farm sat a private residence—an older, but well-maintained house on a 2.5-acre lot. The house was fronted by a highway and surrounded on three sides by Hoskins' newly-acquired farmland. Stan Hoskins, 79, says what started as a small garden crossing onto his property gradually expanded over the years. According to Hoskins, the neighbor added a fence, a greenhouse, and several maple trees, eventually taking over about 60 feet of the field. The man the Hoskins purchased the farm had property line disputes with the owners of this house, according to Hoskins. When they went from being a tenant to being an owner, the property line dispute became ours. The Hoskins thought basic reason and decency would solve things, but were dead wrong. Instead they walked into a wall of entitlement. When Hoskins asked the neighbor to remove the structures in 2024, the neighbor argued the land now belonged  to him under adverse possession laws. Those laws can allow someone to gain ownership of property if they openly use it for a certain period of time and meet specific legal requirements, which vary by state. The dispute has led to an expensive court battle. Hoskins says he has spent about $75,000 in legal fees trying to recover the land. He even offered a compromise that would allow the garden to remain temporarily while preventing future ownership claims, but the offer was rejected. The case is scheduled to go before a judge in late July 2026. Hoskins hopes his experience serves as a warning to other landowners. His advice: don't ignore small property line disputes, because they can grow into costly legal battles over time. If you remember, the teen had become separated from his troop, spending the night in a cave. The next morning the boy scout used his belt buckle to reflect sunlight into the sky, catching the attention of Harrison Ford, an avid helicopter pilot, landed - picking up the teen and safely flew him back to his troop. The year before in 2020, Harrison Ford had assisted another rescue. This time a climber who suffered from altitude sickness climbing the Table Mountain in Idaho Falls, Idaho. During that rescue Ford helped the hiker into his helicopter, then flew to an area hospital. Can you imagine Indiana Jones or Hans Solo actually saving you?! Summer Tip Trip: Don't Count on Cell Service Ever find yourself visiting high trafficked areas only to be in zero cell service? For example, a recent tourist in Yellowstone when driving up to one of the popular locations. The husband, thanks to walkie talkies, would pull up and drop off the family, always taking along a walkie talkie. Once parked they were able to meet up easily via directions on the walkie.  Another use for walkie talkies? More Meat Companies Join USDA's Product Of USA Program The USDA has added 10 more meat and poultry companies to its Product of USA labeling program. The program, launched earlier this year, allows companies to label products as "Product of USA" only if the animals were born, raised, slaughtered, and processed in the United States. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins says the label gives consumers confidence they're buying truly American-raised products while supporting U.S. ranchers, processors, and rural communities. Among the latest companies joining the program are Harris Ranch, One World Beef, Upper Iowa Beef, American Foods Group, Agri Beef, FPL Food, Wholestone Farms, and Harrison's Poultry. USDA says expanding participation in the program is part of the Trump administration's effort to strengthen domestic food production and support independent livestock producers and meat processors. The bill targets the nation's four largest beef processors—Cargill, JBS, Tyson Foods, and National Beef—which lawmakers say control about 85 percent of the U.S. beef market. The proposal would limit market concentration, prevent large companies from controlling multiple major meat sectors, strengthen oversight of pricing practices, and provide financial assistance to help smaller processors and farmer cooperatives expand. Supporters say the legislation would help independent farmers, ranchers, and consumers by increasing competition in the meat industry. Here's a look at three stories making news. Yellowstone National Park Visitor Seriously Injured After Aggressive Bison Attack at Bridge Bay Campground A visitor to Yellowstone National Park was seriously injured Friday evening after an aggressive bull bison charged and tossed him about eight feet or more into the air near Bridge Bay Campground. Professional photographer Mike MacLeod, who witnessed and filmed the incident, said the man was walking with his grandson when the bison suddenly charged, despite the pair being about 100 yards away. The grandson escaped, but the grandfather was struck by the bison, flipped into the air, and suffered serious injuries. MacLeod said the bull had been acting aggressively throughout the campground, charging at vehicles, people, and anything in its path. After the attack, the bison stood over the injured man until MacLeod and several bystanders shouted and moved toward the animal, causing it to retreat. Other campers immediately called 911 and helped care for the victim until Yellowstone emergency crews arrived. The National Park Service has not yet released official details about the incident. According to MacLeod, the victim's grandson later confirmed his grandfather suffered significant injuries and remains in recovery. Wildlife experts note that bull bison become especially aggressive during the annual breeding season, known as the rut, which runs from June through September. While many Yellowstone wildlife encounters involve visitors getting too close to animals, MacLeod said this incident appeared different, with those involved keeping what is generally considered a safe distance before the unexpected attack. The incident is the second reported bison-related injury in Yellowstone this year and serves as another reminder that wild animals can behave unpredictably, even when visitors follow recommended safety guidelines. Maggie Bassett and Shonna Dehl were camping when they say a black bear ripped into their tent, apparently determined to get inside. The pair yelled, screamed, and even fired warning shots, but they say the bear kept returning. After several tense minutes, the bear finally left long enough for the women to reach their vehicle. They stayed inside, honking the horn for hours before driving to a nearby family cabin. Neither woman was injured, but when they returned later, they found their campsite and tents badly damaged. The women say they had taken recommended bear precautions, including storing food properly and keeping nothing edible inside their tents. Wildlife experts believe the bear may have been "food-conditioned," meaning it had previously learned to associate campsites and people with food. Bears that lose their natural fear of humans are more likely to approach camps and create dangerous situations. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department has been notified and plans to trap and relocate the bear. The incident is a reminder that even when campers do everything right, wildlife can still behave unpredictably. If you're spending time in bear country this summer, experts recommend securing food, carrying bear spray, staying alert for signs of bears, and giving wildlife plenty of space. Competitors will battle for world championships in events ranging from barrel racing and team roping to bull riding and saddle bronc riding plus rifle and trap shooting, while also competing for scholarships and national recognition. Retail Beef Prices Continue To Climb According to the latest USDA data, the retail beef price composite reached a new all-time record in June, averaging $9.35 per pound. That's up 14 cents from May and marks the highest monthly average ever recorded. Several popular cuts saw noticeable price increases, including ground chuck, stew beef, round roast, sirloin steak, and uncooked beef roasts. Round roast posted one of the biggest jumps, climbing 35 cents a pound during the month. The only major cut to see a price decline was chuck roast, which slipped 6 cents to $9.55 per pound. Despite record-high prices, consumer demand for beef has remained remarkably strong. USDA Meat Forecast For 2027 The USDA is forecasting even less beef production over the next two years as America's cattle herd remains historically tight. In its latest World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report, USDA lowered its 2026 beef production forecast by 150 million pounds and trimmed another 185 million pounds from its 2027 outlook. Officials say fewer cattle being marketed and lighter carcass weights are behind the reductions. Meanwhile, chicken production is headed in the opposite direction. USDA increased its forecast for both this year and next, saying poultry producers are expanding because of strong profit margins. Pork production was adjusted only slightly lower, while turkey production saw little change overall. Despite the shifts among species, total U.S. meat production is expected to remain nearly unchanged over the next two years. Why Electronic Identification (EID) Tags Are Becoming Essential For Modern Cattle Operations Electronic Identification (EID) tags are quickly becoming one of the most valuable tools available to today's beef producers. Whether you operate a commercial cow-calf herd, stocker operation, feedlot, or seedstock program, RFID technology helps improve cattle recordkeeping, herd health management, traceability, and overall profitability. As cattle producers continue adopting precision livestock management, EID tags provide faster, more accurate data collection while eliminating many of the errors associated with handwritten records. What Are Electronic Identification (EID) Tags Electronic Identification (EID) tags, also known as RFID cattle tags, contain a unique 15-digit identification number assigned to each individual animal. Think of it as a permanent identification number that stays with the animal for life. Unlike traditional visual ear tags, RFID tags communicate electronically with compatible readers. Because the technology is passive, no batteries are required. When scanned, the RFID chip instantly transmits the animal's identification number to a handheld reader, panel reader, scale head, or herd management software. This technology allows producers to quickly record: Individual animal identification Vaccination history Deworming records Breeding dates Pregnancy status Weaning weights Performance data Treatment history Marketing information Understanding USDA 840 Tags vs. Manufacturer RFID Tags Many producers recognize official USDA EID tags by their 840 prefix. The first three digits identify the country of origin. 840 = United States Official Identification Official 840 tags require a Premises Identification Number (PIN) for purchase. These tags are commonly used for interstate movement and animal disease traceability. Many cattle operations also use manufacturer-coded RFID tags that function exactly the same but do not require a PIN. For example, ALLFLEX manufacturer-coded tags begin with the prefix 982. Both provide reliable electronic identification for herd management. New Mexico Landowner Arrested After Alleged Armed Threats Against Fishermen  A New Mexico landowner has been arrested and charged with five felony counts of aggravated assault after authorities say he repeatedly threatened anglers who were legally fishing and wading in the Pecos River. According to the New Mexico Department of Justice, Erik Briones allegedly confronted multiple fishermen over several years while carrying firearms, despite court rulings affirming the public's right to access and wade in many of the state's rivers. Witnesses reported that Briones made threats suggesting he could shoot across the river and warned anglers they would be responsible if they were hit. One widely cited incident, captured on video in 2023, allegedly shows Briones holding a shotgun and telling a fishing guide, "I'm gonna start target practicing," while the guide stood in the river. The arrest comes amid a broader legal battle over public access to New Mexico waterways. Courts, including the New Mexico Supreme Court and later federal courts, have repeatedly upheld the public's right to wade and fish in streams that cross private property, provided people do not trespass on private land to gain access. Authorities also accuse Briones of ignoring court orders by installing barbed wire fences, using heavy equipment to alter the river channel, and creating hazards that could endanger anglers. State officials say these actions were intended to discourage public use of the river. New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez said the case is about enforcing both public access laws and criminal laws against threats of violence. The arrest marks the latest chapter in New Mexico's ongoing debate over private property rights and public access to rivers, with state officials emphasizing that disagreements over access laws do not justify intimidation or armed confrontations.  According to KOB4 News, the New Mexico attorney general had filed a motion to keep Briones in jail until trial. A hearing on that motion was canceled, and Briones is now being released. Court records show Briones must wear an ankle monitor after release. The records also say he cannot return to his residence on the Pecos River before his trial. The best ways to beat the heat include drinking plenty of water, limiting strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing, and seeking shade or air conditioning whenever possible. Do and Don't In The Heat Don't take cold showers. This can constrict blood vessels and make one hotter after drying off from the cold shower. Don't sleep in the nude. Wearing pajamas offer an extra layer of wicking away the sweat at night from the sheets. Do drink electrolytes. These aid in staying hydrated along with drinking plenty of water. Do take a handkerchief, wet with cool water and wrap around the neck. This works well when working in the heat. Do offer fresh water daily to pets, preferably in a shaded area away from flies. Do use fans to cool off homes to shops to barns and pens. Tip: Set a bowl of ice in front of the fan so that cool air is blown. Not everything people try is effective, however. Waiting until you're thirsty to drink water can lead to dehydration, and using fans alone during extreme heat may not provide enough cooling when temperatures become dangerously high. Alcohol and excessive caffeine can also contribute to dehydration. Whether you're working outdoors, farming, fishing, or enjoying recreation, recognizing the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke can help prevent serious illness. Legal Battle Involving Agriculture, Free Speech, and The U.S. Beef Industry One of the most talked-about moments in beef industry history happened nearly 30 years ago, when television icon Oprah Winfrey found herself in a Texas courtroom. In April of 1996, during an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show, guest Howard Lyman raised concerns about mad cow disease, or BSE, and the possibility it could spread in the United States. After hearing the discussion, Oprah famously said it had "stopped me cold from eating another burger." At the time, fears surrounding mad cow disease were growing around the world, even though the disease had not been found in U.S. cattle. The comments drew sharp criticism from cattle producers, especially in Texas, the nation's largest beef-producing state. In 1997, a group of Texas cattlemen sued Oprah and Lyman for more than $10 million under the state's food disparagement law, arguing the broadcast unfairly damaged consumer confidence and contributed to declining cattle prices. The case went to trial in Amarillo in 1998. After six weeks of testimony, the jury ruled in favor of Oprah and Lyman, finding they had not violated the law or defamed the beef industry. A later appeal was also unsuccessful, bringing the case to a close. Today, the lawsuit remains one of the best-known legal battles involving agriculture, free speech, and the U.S. beef industry. Cruise Vacations Can End with a Lifetime Ban  Cruise Chaos Ends with Lifetime Consequences for 16 Passengers  What began as the end of a relaxing cruise turned into a chaotic scene at the Port of Miami after two families became involved in a large fight while leaving the Carnival Conquest. Video of the incident quickly spread online, showing passengers exchanging punches as shocked travelers looked on and law enforcement rushed in to restore order. According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office, the incident was considered a "mutual combat" situation, and no one involved chose to press charges. Even without criminal charges, Carnival Cruise Line took swift action, permanently banning 16 passengers from sailing with the company in the future. Carnival praised law enforcement for responding quickly and reiterated that violent or disruptive behavior has no place on its cruises. The incident serves as a reminder that actions taken both onboard and in cruise terminals can have lasting consequences long after a vacation ends. Many travelers don't realize cruise lines maintain their own internal "Do Not Sail" lists. Unlike the airline industry's government-managed No-Fly List, cruise companies independently decide who may be denied future bookings. Being placed on one can happen immediately following a serious incident—and in some cases, passengers don't find out until they attempt to book another cruise. Why Cruise Lines Ban Passengers Cruise vacations are designed to be safe, family-friendly experiences for thousands of guests living together in close quarters. Because of that, cruise lines enforce strict codes of conduct. Common reasons passengers find themselves permanently banned include: Physical fights or assaults onboard or in cruise terminals Threatening crew members or fellow passengers Severe intoxication leading to dangerous behavior Bringing illegal drugs or prohibited weapons onboard Damaging ship property Repeated violations of ship rules Filing fraudulent payment disputes or chargebacks after completing a cruise Even if local police do not file charges, cruise lines can still determine that a passenger violated company policy and prohibit future travel. No Criminal Charges Doesn't Mean No Consequences The Miami incident highlights an important distinction. Law enforcement determined the fight was a mutual combat situation, and none of the participants wanted to pursue criminal charges. However, Carnival still exercised its right as a private company to deny future service. Just as restaurants, hotels, airlines, and sporting venues may refuse service after violent incidents, cruise companies reserve the same authority through the passenger ticket contract every guest agrees to before boarding. Is There One Universal Cruise Blacklist? Not exactly. Unlike the federal No-Fly List used by airlines, there is no single worldwide "No Sail List" shared across every cruise company. However, several major cruise brands operate under the same corporate ownership. In serious cases involving violence, illegal activity, or significant financial losses, passenger information may be shared among affiliated cruise lines, potentially affecting future bookings across multiple brands. Know the Rules Before Flying Your Private Drone! Travel Smarter by Knowing the Rules Before You Go Flying drones in U.S. National Parks is strictly prohibited. The National Park Service enforces a federal ban on launching, landing, or operating unmanned aircraft on all lands and waters it administers. [1, 2] However, rules at State Parks vary widely depending on the specific location and state. National Parks: The ban applies to all U.S. National Parks, Monuments, and Historic Sites to protect wildlife, preserve natural quiet, and ensure visitor safety. Trump Administration Throws Small Beef Packers A Life Line The Trump administration is rolling out a new $500 million relief program to help small and mid-sized beef processors as the cattle industry continues to deal with the smallest cattle supplies in decades and heavy financial losses. USDA says qualifying processors will receive payments if they maintain minimum cattle slaughter levels. The program is designed to help offset losses that are estimated at around $300 per head. The nation's four largest beef packers—Tyson Foods, JBS, Cargill, and National Beef—are not eligible for the assistance. Those companies process more than 80 percent of all U.S. fed cattle and are excluded from the program. Beyond the animal health concerns, the pest could bring significant economic losses to producers. As of June 28, USDA has confirmed 27 cases in the United States. The parasite has been found in cattle, goats, and sheep in Texas, along with one infected dog in New Mexico. New World Screwworm has a long history in the U.S., dating back to the 1840s. By the 1960s, annual losses were approaching $100 million. Adjusted for today's dollars, a recent USDA study estimates Texas producers alone could lose more than $730 million, with the total economic impact reaching nearly $1.8 billion. While the first U.S. case this year was confirmed in Texas on June 3, livestock producers have already been feeling the financial impact for nearly a year because the U.S.-Mexico border has remained closed to Mexican cattle imports in an effort to slow the spread of the pest. Jet Ski Angler Reels Fights Off Shark, Reels In Tuna New Zealand Jet Ski Angler Lands Giant Tuna After Shark Encounter According to Outdoor Life, a New Zealand fisherman is celebrating an extraordinary catch after battling a massive bluefin tuna — and a hungry shark — from the seat of his jet ski. Matt Ringot was fishing off of a New Zealand bay on June 19 when he hooked a bluefin tuna weighing more than 220 pounds. What followed was a 90-minute struggle as the powerful fish towed his Sea-Doo through increasingly rough seas. Ringot says he brought the tuna alongside his jet ski several times, only to watch it dive back into deep water. Then, a mako shark joined the fight. The shark bit into the tuna and tore off its tail, a move anglers sometimes refer to as being taxed by a predator. While the damage reduced the size of the catch, Ringot says it also made the tuna easier to control. But the shark wasn't finished. After Ringot finally brought the fish to the surface, the mako returned and briefly fought over the tuna before swimming away. The shark continued circling as Ringot and his fishing partner, Brady Smith, tried to haul the oversized fish aboard. That proved impossible. The tuna was simply too large for the jet ski. The pair radioed for assistance, and two nearby fishing boats responded. With their help, the anglers finally secured the giant tuna and brought the remarkable catch in. Ringot later shared video highlights of the adventure on his YouTube channel, showing the long battle with the fish, the shark encounter, and the arrival of the boats that helped save the day. He says there was no way he could have landed the tuna alone, calling it one of the most memorable fishing experiences of his life. Cattle Industry News JBS USA has announced plans to close two facilities as part of an effort to improve efficiency and focus on future growth. The company will shut down its beef production plant in Pennsylvania, and its value-added processing facility in Memphis, Tennessee. JBS says the move is part of a larger strategy to modernize operations, improve efficiency, and expand production of value-added food products. The company says production from the two facilities will be shifted to other JBS operations, and customers should not see any disruption in supply.  The announcement comes after JBS invested in facilities in Texas, Georgia, and Iowa to expand  prepared foods production, modernize plants, and improve efficiency. Earlier this year, the company also combined its beef and case-ready businesses to create a more streamlined operation. The JBS CEO says JBS continues to invest heavily in the United States and the future of food production, while making sure its operations remain competitive and efficient. The company says consumer demand for protein remains strong and believes these changes will help position JBS for long-term growth. Last fall, Tyson Foods permanently closed its beef processing facility in Lexington, Nebraska, eliminating approximately 3,200 jobs and removing nearly 5% of total U.S. beef slaughter capacity. More recently, labor disputes have emerged at several major processing facilities. Approximately 1,700 workers at Cargill's beef processing plant in Fort Morgan, Colorado, were locked out after contract negotiations between the company and union representatives failed to produce a ratified agreement. The Fort Morgan facility accounts for nearly 5% of total U.S. beef production. JBS also faced labor challenges earlier this year when nearly 4,000 workers at its Greeley, Colorado, beef plant participated in a strike before ultimately approving a new labor contract.   REFERENCE: https://meatingplace.com/jbs-to-close-beef-plant-value-added-facility/?utm_source=omeda&utm_medium=email&utm_cid=1103020073&utm_campaign=MTGMCD260614015&utm_date=20260615-0300   https://www.northernag.net/jbs-announces-closure-of-beef-production-plant-and-value-added-facility/ New World Screwworm Update Here's the latest on New World Screwworm.  As of Monday, June 15th, the total number of domestic cases is now at 12, 11 are considered active and 1 inactive with 0 active wildlife and feral cases.  Counties in Texas include Sutton, an inactive case discovered in a sheep.  Edwards county with cases discovered in cattle and goats.  Tom Green County, a case in cattle.  Zavala County, cases in cattle.  Gillespie (guh-LES-pee) County, a case in goats.  And La Salle County, cases in cattle.  In New Mexico, Lea County had that case in a dog.  Livestock and pet owners, wildlife game farms, producers, land users, remember to check stock often for open wounds and lethargic animals.  Report anything unusual and head to screwworm.gov for the latest confirmation maps, current status, treatment and U.S. readiness plans. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins says the USDA is closely monitoring the New World screwworm situation and what it could mean for the current ban on live cattle imports from Mexico. Speaking at a press conference in Texas, Rollins was asked whether the U.S. could reopen the border to Mexican cattle imports now that New World screwworm has been detected in Texas. Rollins responded that the issue is "not lost on me" and that USDA will continue to watch the data very closely. The comments come after USDA confirmed several New World screwworm cases in Texas, including cases found in cattle, sheep, goats and a dog. Federal officials say surveillance, quarantines, treatment efforts, and sterile fly releases are being used to contain and eliminate the pest. The U.S. suspended imports of live cattle, horses, and bison from Mexico in May of 2025 because of the northward spread of New World screwworm in Mexico. Before the border closure, the United States imported about 1.25 million head of cattle from Mexico each year, most of them feeder cattle headed to U.S. feedlots. Some livestock industry groups have questioned whether the ban remains effective, noting that  screwworm can spread through wildlife, pets, and other animals—not just cattle. Producers and feedlot operators have also said the closure has tightened cattle supplies and increased costs. Rollins did not provide any timeline for reopening the border but said USDA will continue evaluating the situation. Meanwhile, USDA's eradication efforts include expanded trapping programs, movement controls, and the release of sterile flies from facilities in Texas, Mexico, and Panama. Through the first four months of 2026, U.S. beef exports totaled just over 365,000 metric tons, down 11 percent from a year ago. Export value fell 7 percent to $3.13 billion, as tight cattle supplies and record-high global beef prices continue to impact trade. There is some positive news. Following a summit between President Trump and the Chinese President, China renewed export licenses for most U.S. beef plants in May. The U.S. beef industry had been largely shut out of China since March of 2025 during the early stages of the trade dispute. However, industry leaders say it remains unclear how quickly beef shipments to China will recover. Additional trade barriers still need to be resolved before exports can fully rebound. U.S. Meat Export Federation President Dan Halstrom says the renewed plant registrations are encouraging, but more obstacles must be addressed before U.S. beef regains its position in the Chinese market. Outside of China, demand for U.S. beef remains steady. Export volume to the rest of the world is roughly unchanged from a year ago, while export value is up 7 percent. Major buyers including South Korea, Japan, and Canada have purchased less U.S. beef this year. Mexico, however, continues to be a strong customer, with purchases holding steady and demand for variety meats increasing. Several markets are showing strong growth, including Taiwan, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas, Peru, Colombia, and Guatemala. Halstrom says global demand for U.S. beef remains resilient despite high prices and limited supplies. He notes challenges remain, including weak foreign currencies and higher energy costs that are affecting consumer spending in many countries. Wayne Ayers, DMV from Elanco Animal Health How To Identify And What To Do To Treat New World Screwworm The name screwworm refers to the maggots' feeding behavior as they burrow (screw) into the wound, feeding as they go like a screw being driven into wood. Maggots cause extensive damage by tearing at the hosts' tissue with sharp mouth hooks. The wound can become larger and deepen as more maggots hatch and feed on living tissue. As a result, NWS can cause serious, often deadly damage to the animal. Adult screwworm flies are about the size of a common housefly (or slightly larger). They have orange eyes, a metallic blue or green body, and three dark stripes along their backs. Feeder Cattle Capture Extraordinary Prices In 2026 Feeder cattle prices continue to shatter records in 2026, with historic highs being set across nearly every weight class. The highest price reported so far this year was an incredible 750 dollars per hundredweight for 316-pound steers at Pratt Livestock in Kansas. Other standout sales include 680 dollars per hundredweight for 446-pound steers at Joplin Regional Stockyards in Missouri, 591 dollars for 544-pound steers at Burwell Livestock Market in Nebraska, and 521 dollars for 602-pound steers at Ogallala Livestock Auction in Nebraska. In the heavier weight categories, Valentine Livestock Auction in Nebraska recorded the year's top seven-weight and eight-weight steer prices at 468 dollars and 416 dollars and 75 cents per hundredweight. Kimball Livestock Auction in South Dakota posted the highest nine-weight steer price at 376 dollars and 25 cents per hundredweight. Even the heaviest category has seen exceptional strength, with 1,009-pound steers bringing 357 dollars and 60 cents per hundredweight at Stockmens Livestock in South Dakota. The numbers underscore the continued strength of the cattle market as tight supplies and strong demand push feeder cattle values to unprecedented levels. How To Identify & Treat New World Screwworm In Livestock The name screwworm refers to the maggots' feeding behavior as they burrow (screw) into the wound, feeding as they go like a screw being driven into wood. Maggots cause extensive damage by tearing at the hosts' tissue with sharp mouth hooks. The wound can become larger and deepen as more maggots hatch and feed on living tissue. As a result, NWS can cause serious, often deadly damage to the animal. Adult screwworm flies are about the size of a common housefly (or slightly larger). They have orange eyes, a metallic blue or green body, and three dark stripes along their backs. The purpose: to spotlight North America's top livestock auctioneers and to salute their traditionally important role in the competitive livestock marketing process. Auctioneers from the United States and Canada came to the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Denver, Colorado to show off their auctioneering talents. Twenty-three contestants sold the same 20 head of cattle over and over again. The contest was held at hotels until 1967, when it traveled to its first LMA member market. Since then the WLAC has been held at member markets around the U.S. and Canada. Recent locations include Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, Virginia and West Virginia. Though the rules have changed, the enthusiasm for the competition hasn't. The largest number of entrants in the contest to date was in 1981 when LMA received 105 auctioneer entries. The championship consists of three stages, the qualifying event, semifinals and the finals, held each June in conjunction with the LMA Annual Convention. Contestants competing for the world champion title must be 18 years old, employed as a livestock auctioneer and sponsored by livestock auction or dealer businesses, who share in the favorable publicity generated by the winners. While checks and cash haven't made a full comeback, many business owners are looking for ways to reduce payment costs. How Much Do Credit Card Fees Cost?  Most merchants pay between 1.5% and 3.5% per credit card transaction. Example: Auto Body Shop An auto body shop processing $214,000 annually in credit card payments at a 3.5% processing rate would pay approximately $7,500 per year in credit card fees. That's $7,500 that could otherwise be used for employee wages, equipment upgrades, marketing, or business growth. Are Checks Making a Comeback? In some industries, yes. Businesses that handle large invoices—such as contractors, auto repair shops, property managers, and professional service firms—are increasingly encouraging customers to pay by check or bank transfer to avoid processing fees. Canada Closes Border To Texas Cattle & Feedlot Placements New World Screwworm continues to make headlines this week. The USDA has launched a dashboard tracking the pest's impact in the United States, where cases remain isolated to Texas.  That information can be viewed at screwworm.gov. The bigger concern is the spread of cases in Mexico, which has kept the U.S. border closed to imports of Mexican feeder cattle. That comes at a time when beef demand remains strong and supplies are already tight. Cattle imports from Mexico have been restricted since July 2025, with the greatest impact being felt in border states. Feedlots in Texas, California, Arizona, and New Mexico have traditionally relied on feeder cattle from Mexico. Recent data shows cattle-on-feed numbers in Texas and California are running below their five-year averages, while Arizona feedlots are seeing even larger declines. The discovery of New World Screwworm in Texas has also triggered new trade restrictions. Canada has temporarily banned livestock imports from Texas, saying animals that originated in or were present in the state within 21 days of crossing the border will not be accepted. Several U.S. states, including Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Montana, have also tightened veterinary requirements for livestock entering from Texas as officials work to prevent the pest from spreading further. Cody Johnson Defends Alaska Grizzly Hunt Amid Social Media Backlash Country music star Cody Johnson is responding to criticism after sharing photos from a recent grizzly bear hunt in Alaska, a trip he took following a year filled with career milestones and major award wins. The hunt quickly sparked debate online. While some fans congratulated Johnson and praised the experience, others criticized the decision to hunt a grizzly bear and questioned whether it was necessary. Some commenters expressed discomfort with seeing photos of the harvested animal, while others challenged the ethics of bear hunting altogether. Johnson says the hunt was conducted legally and under Alaska's wildlife management regulations. In a recent interview, he emphasized that the trip was about more than recreation, describing it as part of a broader conservation effort. According to Johnson, wildlife managers in Alaska closely monitor predator and prey populations. Governor Brad Little signed the new law in April, and it takes effect this summer. Under the regulations, hunters will be prohibited from using transmitting trail cameras, drones, thermal imaging devices, and night vision equipment to hunt or scout big game and upland birds on public lands between late August and the end of December. The law marks a major shift for Idaho, which previously had few restrictions on technologies such as thermal optics for hunting deer and elk. Supporters say rapid advances in technology — including cheaper thermal devices and satellite-connected trail cameras — give hunters an unfair advantage and could undermine public trust in wildlife management. The restrictions apply specifically to public lands and seasonal hunting activity. Hunters will still be allowed to use cell-enabled trail cameras during spring bear season, and exemptions remain for predator hunting, including wolves and mountain lions. The law also allows technology to be used when recovering wounded animals. Conservation groups and wildlife advocates say the debate over hunting technology has been building for years. In one recent Wyoming case, reported by Cowboy State Daily, a ranch owner dealing with repeated trespassing agreed to let game wardens place elk antlers fitted with tracking devices around private property. One of those antlers was later picked up by a seven-year-old boy, leading to a trespassing citation for his father. According to Cowboy State Daily, the operation took place on the LU Ranch in Hot Springs County. The boy's father, Miles Galovich, received a citation on April 19 after authorities tracked the antler back to his home. The Galovich family owns neighboring property near the ranch, where public and private lands are closely mixed together. The family also reportedly has legal access to a road crossing the LU Ranch and nearby public land, according to the report. Ranch owners had allegedly asked Wyoming game wardens to distribute the GPS-equipped elk sheds around their property in response to ongoing trespassing concerns from shed hunters. According to Outdoor Life, Miles Galovich said he and his son believed they were near public land when the boy spotted the antler about 20 yards off the road. After the child picked it up and brought it home, game wardens later arrived and issued Galovich a trespassing citation. The antler was returned to authorities. Galovich argued the area was not clearly marked or fenced and said the situation “feels kind of like entrapment.” Court records show he could face fines up to $1,000 and potentially lose hunting and fishing privileges. A court hearing was scheduled for May 15 and at this time have not heard the final decision. Texas Calf With New World Screwworm USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) confirmed the detection of New World screwworm (NWS) in a 3-week-old calf in Zavala County, Texas, marking the first confirmed U.S. case. The larvae were found in the calf's umbilical area, and no additional cases have been detected to date. New World screwworm is a serious pest whose larvae feed on the living tissue of warm-blooded animals, posing risks to livestock, pets, wildlife, and, in rare cases, humans. In response, USDA and Texas animal health officials have activated their NWS Response Playbook and are taking immediate action to contain and eradicate the pest. Measures include establishing a 20-kilometer quarantine zone around the detection site, increasing surveillance and trapping efforts, deploying additional sterile screwworm flies, implementing wildlife monitoring programs, and forming a unified incident command team. USDA emphasized that the U.S. food supply remains safe, as screwworm does not infest meat products and any affected animals would be identified during federal meat inspection. Officials also urged livestock producers and pet owners in the region to monitor animals closely for signs of infestation and report any suspected cases immediately. Managing Cattle & Grass In A Drought It is that time of year that many producers are moving cattle to summer grazing.  But drought is plaguing many and it continues to worsen.  According to drought.gov, as of May 5th, 60.92% of the country is experiencing moderate to exceptional drought, largely concentrated in the Southeast, High Plains, and West. There are strategies for managing drought, or I should say how we manage grass and forage uptake in the cowherd to get through drought.  Trevor Burian from Killdeer North Dakota joins us today.  Trevor has been a student of grazing, plant management, regenerative ag, and cattle efficiency and profitability his entire life. Cattle Industry News China & U.S. Beef Trade According to Derrell Peel, Oklahoma State University Extension Livestock Marketing Specialist, the role of China in global beef markets has changed rapidly in the last two decades.  China, including Hong Kong, was not a player at all in global beef markets as little as 15 years ago but has risen rapidly to become the largest beef importer in the last decade. For many years, China was a large beef producing and consuming country but had almost no presence in global beef markets. Starting about 2013, rising beef consumption in China began to exceed domestic beef production, leading for the first time to significant beef imports. Although per capita beef consumption in China remains relatively low — roughly 13 pounds compared to 59 pounds in the U.S. — the large population means that small increases in beef consumption represent large amounts of beef in total. According to the U.S. Meat Export Federation President CEO Dan Halstrom, China's reentry into the market for U.S. beef exports will have a significant and rapid price feedback to the American industry from other markets.  He called it a “hidden benefit” from China's renewal of registrations for U.S. beef facilities as well as hoped-for resolution of suspensions of a significant number of plants. Paxton said the investigation would be conducted alongside a separate antitrust probe announced by the U.S. Department of Justice under President Donald Trump's administration. The investigation is focused on the highly concentrated beef packing sector, where four companies — JBS S.A., Tyson Fresh Meats, Cargill and National Beef Packing Co. — collectively control more than 85% of U.S. beef processing capacity, according to Paxton's office. The attorney general cited reports alleging the companies may have used their market power to suppress cattle prices paid to ranchers while increasing beef prices for consumers. USDA says sterile fly dispersal efforts are currently concentrated along the Gulf coast of northern Mexico, with additional drops occurring within roughly 50 miles of the Texas border. Officials say the agency is relying heavily on predictive modeling and real-time surveillance data to determine where those flies are deployed. USDA says those decisions are being made in coordination with the agency's Agricultural Research Service, using predictive analytics designed to anticipate where the pest could spread next, not simply where cases are currently confirmed. REFERENCE: https://www.rfdtv.com/usda-expands-new-world-screwworm-surveillance-as-cases-rise-in-mexico-and-sterile-fly-supply-stays-limited U.S. Beef Imports Projected To Top 6 Billion Pounds U.S. Beef Imports are projected to top 6 billion pounds for the first time in history — Up 166% Since 2010.  Last week's USDA WASDE report projected 2026 U.S. beef imports at 6.1 billion pounds, the highest level in history and the first time beef imports have ever exceeded 6 billion pounds.  The projection would mark an increase of 638 million pounds, or 11.7%, from 2025 levels and continue a trend that has seen beef imports increase every year since 2017. Since 2010, U.S. beef imports have climbed from 2.3 billion pounds to more than 6.1 billion pounds, an increase of roughly 3.8 billion pounds, or nearly 166%. The sharp rise in imports has coincided with declining U.S. cattle inventories and historically tight domestic beef supplies. Retail Beef Prices Rocket Higher Retail beef prices continued their sharp climb in April as all 12 major beef categories increased from March levels, with 9 of the 12 cuts establishing new all-time record highs. The Retail Beef Price Composite increased from $8.93/lb in March to a record $9.28/lb in April, rising $0.35/lb in just one month. Ground beef prices continued pushing higher across every category. Ground Chuck increased from $6.68 to a record $6.92/lb, while Ground Beef climbed from $6.70 to $6.90/lb. Lean & Extra Lean Ground Beef jumped $0.31 to a record $8.51/lb, and All Uncooked Ground Beef increased to a record $7.06/lb. Roast values posted some of the largest monthly increases. Chuck Roast, USDA Choice Boneless surged $0.66 to a record $9.50/lb, while Round Roast, Choice Boneless climbed $0.51 to a record $8.98/lb.  Only three categories failed to establish new all-time highs during April. Round Steak, USDA Choice increased from $9.61 to $9.83/lb but remained below its February 2026 record high of $10.09/lb. Beef for Stew, Boneless rose from $8.41 to $8.65/lb but stayed below its November 2025 record of $9.172/lb. Why Branding Etiquette Matters on the Ranch Branding season is one of the busiest and most important times of the year in cattle country. It's where long days, hard work, and tradition all meet in the branding pen. Whether you grew up ranching or you're showing up to help neighbors for the first time, knowing the unspoken rules matters. Good etiquette keeps the crew safe, the cattle handled properly, and the day moving smoothly. Respect still goes a long way in cowboy culture. The Unspoken Rules of Branding Season Don't Ride in Front of the Boss Every ranch has a flow and leadership structure. Cutting in front of the ranch owner or lead rider is seen as disrespectful and disruptive to the cattle. Only Come if You Were Invited Brandings are community events, but they're still working operations. Showing up uninvited can create unnecessary confusion, safety concerns, and extra mouths to feed. Do the Job You're Assigned Not everyone ropes calves. Not everyone runs the branding irons. The Ranch Boss will place people where they're needed most. A good hand works where asked without complaint. Drag Calves Properly Never drag calves above the hock and/or drag by one leg. Learn How to Vaccinate Correctly Giving vaccines improperly can injure cattle and reduce effectiveness. If you don't know, ask someone experienced. Secondly, if multiple vaccines are being given - work as a team to understand for example who is going high or low on the neck. Leave the Dogs at Home Even well-trained dogs can create problems in a crowded branding pen. Extra animals increase stress on cattle and distract working horses. No Loping in the Pen A branding pen is tight, crowded, and dangerous. Moving too fast puts horses, riders, calves, and ground crews at risk. Let the Crew Handle the Roping Every ranch has trusted ropers who know the cattle and understand the pace of the operation. Unless asked, don't ride into the roping pen. Learn How to Wrestle Calves Roping is only part of the job. Good calf wrestlers are valuable because they know how to control calves safely and efficiently. Ask to be shown how, everyone is always happy to teach. Always Be Aware of Your Surroundings Brandings move fast. Horses, ropes, cattle, gates, and people are all moving at once. Situational awareness keeps everyone safer. Thank The Cooks and the Ranch Boss Events like a branding are a lot of work to host. From cooking for large crews with weather unknowns to leading the branding crew, be courteous and always thank the hosts for allowing you to be a part of the western way of life few have the chance to experience! It's about neighbors helping neighbors, preserving ranch traditions, and earning respect through hard work and awareness. The best ranch hands are usually the ones who stay humble, pay attention, and understand that cowboy etiquette is still very much alive. Hunter Survives Grizzly Charge in Idaho Forest An Idaho hunter shot and killed a charging grizzly bear after officials say the animal rushed toward him and his young son in a remote area near Yellowstone National Park. Wildlife investigators determined the man acted in self-defense and will not face charges. The encounter happened the evening of Saturday, May 16, 2026 in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest while the pair were hunting black bears near Cave Falls Road. According to the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, the grizzly crossed a meadow, caught the hunters' scent, and suddenly turned toward them. Officials say the hunters tried to alert the bear to their presence, but it charged anyway. The man first fired a handgun, then switched to his rifle and killed the bear only about five yards away. The hunter later contacted the Fremont County Sheriff's Office, which notified state wildlife officers. After investigating, officials concluded the shooting was justified because the bear posed an immediate threat to the man and his son. Grizzly bears remain protected under both state and federal law, meaning they can only legally be killed in situations involving defense of human life. The incident comes just weeks after another grizzly attack inside Yellowstone National Park, where two brothers were injured while hiking near Old Faithful. Both survived after being rescued and flown out by helicopter. Wildlife officials are reminding hunters and hikers in grizzly country to carry bear spray, travel with partners, make noise in dense areas, and stay alert for fresh bear tracks or signs. Projected Higher Steer Prices In 2027 The May WASDE report provided the first official look at 2027 steer price projections, and USDA is forecasting prices even higher than the record levels expected in 2026 and the record prices seen in 2025. USDA projected the 2027 steer price at $254 per hundredweight, compared to the 2026 projection of $249.66 and the 2025 annual average of $224.37. That puts 2027 prices $4.34 higher than the projected 2026 record average, an increase of 1.7%. Compared to 2025, the 2027 projection is $29.63 higher, representing a 13.2% increase. USDA also raised its 2026 projection sharply from $241.66 in the April report to $249.66 in the May update due to tighter expected cattle supplies and stronger recent cash market data. USDA steer price projections refer to the 5-Area, Direct, Total All Grades steer price.
