Travis Richie has a very unique story. In spite of growing up in a single parent home, his young life was good. Showing a propensity for numbers and finance, he found himself deep and successful in that field. An oversight in his venture capital world found him in prison in Arizona, where his perceptions of the incarcerated community took an immediate turn. During his 15 months down, he became a bit of an instructor, helping his fellow inmates learn successful financial skills. His booklet, Don't Buy a Cheeseburger with a Credit Card, has developed into the largest non-governmental, non-profit organization serving the incarcerated population. Currently, his program is in over 1,300 prisons across the United States. Like me, only on a grander scale, he has drank the Kool-Aid of the necessity of prison reform. If you're interested in creating change and growth, you will love his story. Kinahan gang leader Liam Byrne (43) has been sentenced to five years in prison for weapons charges, while Thomas “Bomber” Kavanagh (57) has been sentenced to six years for similar offences. Both pleaded guilty to the charges, while Kavanagh had also admitted perverting the course of justice. Their co-accused, Shaun Kent (38) from Liverpool, was also sentenced to six years.Observers in the court noticed Byrne's relief as he realised the sentence would see him out of prison as soon as next year. The court had not heard the full details of Byrne's criminal past, and Gardaí do not believe Byrne's claim that he wants to live a lawful life upon release. Conor Lally gives the background to the case and Mark Paul reports from the sentencing in London.Presented by Bernice Harrison. Produced by Declan Conlon and Suzanne Brennan. Hosted on Acast. Imagine you're at home when you hear a knock. At your door are people who want you to share, in detail, who you voted for in the last election, months ago. When you ask them who they are and where they're from, they remain vague and perhaps even aggressive. This was the case for some Americans in the years after the 2020 election, part of a spate of behaviors by election skeptics and deniers that, in some cases, amounted to voter intimidation. The history of voter intimidation in the United States is sordid and violent, especially in the century between the U.S. Civil War and the passage of strong voter protections in the 1960s. But it's important to remember that voter intimidation is against the law. Whether you're voting in-person, by mail or via election dropbox, you should never be made to feel unsafe or intimidated while exercising your freedom to vote..Carly Koppes, the clerk and recorder of Colorado's enormous Weld County, describes to us the steps she and fellow officials took when they received reports of unwelcome and unofficial vigilante election “auditors” going door to door in 2021. Christina Das of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund walks us through the bleak history of voter intimidation in America. And CLC's Jonathan Diaz explains how voter intimidation has evolved to become sneakier and more subversive in the digital age — and the steps you can take if you encounter it.Nationwide nonpartisan Election Protection (EP) hotline:866-OUR-VOTE (866-687-8683)Host and Guests:Simone Leeper litigates a wide range of redistricting-related cases at CLC, challenging gerrymanders and advocating for election systems that guarantee all voters an equal opportunity to influence our democracy. Prior to arriving at CLC, Simone was a law clerk in the office of Senator Ed Markey and at the Library of Congress, Office of General Counsel. She received her J.D. cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center in 2019 and a bachelor's degree in political science from Columbia University in 2016.Carly Koppes has been working in the Weld County Clerk and Recorder's office for twenty years starting in June of 2004. Her main department was the Election department, but she has also worked in the Recording and Motor Vehicle departments during her time working for the Clerk and Recorder office. She received her Colorado Election Official Certification from the Colorado Secretary of State in October 2007 and finished up her national designation of Certified Elections/Registration Administrators (CERA) through the Elections Center's Professional Education Program at Auburn University in July of 2014. Carly is a 2016 graduate of the Leadership Program of the Rockies and in 2019 she received her Public Leadership certification from Pepperdine University through the International Association of Government Officials. Carly was also honored along with the Colorado County Clerks Association to receive the Defender of Democracy Award from The Center for Election Innovation and Research in 2022. In 2023 Carly was appointed to the national Local Leadership Council of the Election Assistance Commission and was elected as the Vice Chair of the Council. Carly is the youngest person to be elected to the position of Weld County Clerk and Recorder. Carly is currently serving on the Executive Board for the Colorado County Clerks Association; Carly was President of the Colorado County Clerks Association in 2021 and will serve as President in 2026.Christina Das is Counsel on the Black Voters on the Rise team with LDF, an interdisciplinary team leading year-round election protection and election administration advocacy efforts across the South, using legal, organizing, and advocacy tools to defend and advance the rights of Black voters to participate in our democracy. Christina's experience includes executing strategic campaigns to expand voter access, such as passing legislation for in-person Early Voting in South Carolina in 2022 and working with state-based coalitions to implement jail-based polling places for eligible detained individuals across Texas. She co-leads the national Election Protection Working Group for Jail and Post-Release Voting and has been working with system impacted individuals over the past four years to break down procedural barriers to accessing the ballot behind bars. Christina will lead LDF's election protection program in Texas for the 2024 cycle and support ongoing litigation efforts. Post-election, she works to safeguard the election certification process from any targeted sabotage efforts, as well as working on future policy and election administration reforms at the local, state, and federal level.Jonathan Diaz is Director for Voting Advocacy and Partnerships at Campaign Legal Center. Sam Bankman-Fried, the former CEO of FTX, has been at the center of a high-profile financial scandal that has captivated the world of cryptocurrency and beyond. In November 2022, FTX filed for bankruptcy, sending shockwaves through the industry and leaving millions of investors wondering how such a collapse could occur.Bankman-Fried, known as SBF, was arrested in December 2022 and charged with multiple counts of fraud, conspiracy, and money laundering. The charges alleged that he orchestrated a scheme to misappropriate $8 billion from FTX customers, using the funds for personal expenses, real estate, investments, celebrity endorsements, and lavish lifestyles. The trial, which took place in New York, was marked by intense scrutiny and a rush to judgment. Bankman-Fried's defense team argued that he was presumed guilty from the outset, not only by the media and the public but also by the judge and federal prosecutors. They claimed that the trial was tainted by errors and that Bankman-Fried was denied a fair trial. In March 2024, Judge Lewis Kaplan sentenced Bankman-Fried to 25 years in prison, a sentence his defense team described as "draconian". The conviction was met with widespread criticism from Bankman-Fried's supporters, who argue that the evidence presented did not fully reflect the complexities of FTX's financial situation.Bankman-Fried's appeal, filed in September 2024, seeks to overturn his conviction and secure a new trial. His attorneys argue that the trial judge imposed undue restrictions on their ability to present evidence and that the jury was hurried into reaching a verdict. The appeal highlights a narrative shift in public perception, with some now questioning the initial portrayal of Bankman-Fried as a thief who bankrupted FTX.As the legal battle continues, it remains to be seen whether Bankman-Fried will succeed in his appeal. One thing is certain: the case has exposed deep flaws in the cryptocurrency industry and raised critical questions about accountability and transparency in financial dealings.

**Sam Bankman-Fried: The Rise and Fall of a Crypto Kingpin**Sam Bankman-Fried, once hailed as the poster boy of the cryptocurrency world, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for orchestrating one of the largest financial frauds in history. The collapse of his cryptocurrency exchange, FTX, in November 2022, exposed a web of deceit and mismanagement that left thousands of investors reeling.Bankman-Fried, known as SBF, co-founded FTX in 2019 and quickly rose to prominence with his charismatic leadership and innovative approach to cryptocurrency trading. FTX became the second-largest crypto exchange globally, with a valuation of over $30 billion and Bankman-Fried's personal net worth estimated at more than $20 billion. However, beneath the surface, FTX was struggling with a massive cash shortfall.Prosecutors alleged that Bankman-Fried used FTX customer deposits to fund his own lavish lifestyle, including luxury properties in the Caribbean and donations to various causes. He also used these funds to prop up his struggling hedge fund, Alameda Research, which had made billions of dollars in crypto investments that later plummeted in value. The trial, which began in October 2023, revealed a complex scheme where Bankman-Fried misled investors and customers. Caroline Ellison, the former CEO of Alameda Research, testified that Bankman-Fried directed her to commit crimes and conceal the taking of customer funds. Ellison pleaded guilty to seven counts of fraud and conspiracy as part of a cooperation deal with prosecutors.Bankman-Fried's defense argued that he was merely borrowing funds to run Alameda Research, but the prosecution painted him as a greedy con man who stole billions from thousands of people. The jury ultimately convicted him on seven counts of fraud, conspiracy, and money laundering.Judge Lewis Kaplan's 25-year sentence reflected the severity of the crime and the risk that Bankman-Fried posed to future financial crimes. The sentence sends a strong message to others in the financial industry: justice will be swift, and the consequences will be severe.Despite his conviction, Bankman-Fried plans to appeal, claiming that the judge restricted his defense strategy. However, legal experts believe that his appeal is unlikely to succeed, given the overwhelming evidence against him.The downfall of Sam Bankman-Fried serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of unchecked power and greed in the financial world. His story highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in the rapidly evolving

Brian Jeffrey Raymond, a former CIA officer, was sentenced to 30 years in prison in September 2024 for drugging, sexually assaulting, and filming more than two dozen women across multiple countries over a 14-year period. Raymond used his position while working for the U.S. government, including during his time at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City, to target and exploit his victims. Many of the assaults occurred at his government-leased housing in Mexico City, where he lured women through dating apps. He often drugged them using a combination of alcohol and substances like Ambien, rendering them unconscious before assaulting them.Raymond admitted to engaging in non-consensual sexual acts with several victims and took hundreds of photos and videos of them while they were unconscious. The investigation began in May 2020 after a woman was seen screaming for help from his balcony. A search of his devices uncovered nearly 500 explicit images and videos of unconscious women, leading to his arrest and subsequent guilty plea in 2023.In addition to his prison sentence, Raymond was ordered to pay $260,000 in restitution to his victims and will remain on lifetime supervised release after serving his time. He will also be required to register as a sex offender for life. His actions have been described as a long-running, calculated exploitation of vulnerable women.(commercial at 7:51)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Predator CIA officer who drugged and sexually abused dozens of women across the world and kept sick cache of pictures of naked and unconscious victims learns his fate | Daily Mail Online

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - The man described by prosecutors as the ringleader of the Rankin County Goon Squad claims a federal judge sentenced him to an excessive amount of prison time for his role in the rape and torture of two Black men, according to court records filed Wednesday. The attorney for former Rankin County Chief Investigator Brett McAlpin argues that his client was not a member of the squad nor its leader when four other Rankin County deputies and a Richland Police officer responded to a Braxton home in January 2023. The encounter, which involved sexual assault, torture and prolonged bouts of tasing, reached a horrifying climax when former deputy Hunter Elward put his gun inside the mouth of Michael Corey Jenkins and fired, seriously injuring him. McAlpin's appeal concedes he did set everything in motion, however, when he reached out to two different deputies to get them to check out a house for suspicious activity. The 73-page filing, written by attorney Theodore Cooperstein, states McAlpin didn't order anyone to do anything inside the home nor participated, but he was there when most of the violent events took place. The filing also admits McAlpin played a pivotal role in the coverup that followed that night of torture. McAlpin and the five former officers all signed plea agreements with the U.S. Government last year, which waived their right to an appeal. Cooperstein maintains his client is no longer bound by that restriction because the government did not live up to its end of the plea agreement, rendering it null and void. The attorney said the feds didn't dismiss any counts against McAlpin, and because it didn't offer him any benefit for cooperating, the government breached the agreement. Cooperstein said his client also got the second-highest sentence of the six men -- 327 months -- even though his role was not as prominent as anybody else's. Investigators concluded former deputy Jeffrey Middleton was actually in charge of the Goon Squad itself, yet only got 200 months behind bars. Elward nearly killed Jenkins when he shot him in the mouth, yet got roughly two-thirds of McAlpin's sentence. McAlpin's lawyer also claims the government lumped in other cases where McAlpin was accused but never convicted of similar torture incidents and enhanced his penalties based on those unproven claims.

A woman from New Richmond, Wisconsin, has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of her fiancé, Shaun Lewis, in their home. Marian Smith, 55, received her sentence on Tuesday in St. Croix Circuit Court after pleading guilty to charges of first-degree intentional homicide and resisting or obstructing police. The incident, which occurred 1½ years ago on August 27, 2022, shook the small community. According to court documents, Smith had called 911 from their residence in the 600 block of N. 2nd Street, prompting police and emergency medical personnel to respond. Upon arrival, officers found Lewis on the floor with multiple wounds. Despite efforts to save him, Lewis succumbed to his injuries at the scene. An autopsy conducted by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office determined that Lewis died from a stab wound to his abdomen, with an additional less serious wound to his chest. During the investigation, Smith provided law enforcement with various accounts of what transpired that fateful morning. Among her statements was the claim that Lewis had fallen on a knife during an argument between them, leading to his fatal injuries. Despite her explanations, the evidence presented in court, including the autopsy report, supported the conclusion that Smith was responsible for Lewis's death. As a result, she ultimately pleaded guilty to the charges brought against her. Smith's sentencing includes credit for the time she has already served in jail since her arrest. This means she is expected to spend approximately the first 1½ years of her term behind bars, with the remainder on extended release. The tragic outcome of this case serves as a reminder of the consequences of domestic disputes escalating to violence. Law enforcement officials urge individuals facing conflicts within their relationships to seek assistance and support to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
