In this Bell Work Talk, Dr. Jamie Lewis Saye discusses her team's pilot study comparing blind swab and speculum-assisted evidence collection during sexual assault forensic medical examinations. She highlights how both methods yield similar rates of Y-screen positivity and CODIS-eligible DNA profiles, underscoring the potential of less invasive approaches to improve survivor participation in evidence collection while maintaining forensic integrity. Dr. Jamie Lewis Saye, DNP, CNM, APRN, SANE-A, is an Assistant Professor in the Wellstar School of Nursing at Kennesaw State University and Clinical Director of the SAFE Center. A certified nurse-midwife and experienced Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, Dr. Saye brings over a decade of experience in forensic nursing, trauma-informed care, and interdisciplinary community-academic collaboration. Her research focuses on strengthening forensic evidence collection practices, advancing survivor-centered policies, and improving health and legal outcomes for victims of violence. Dr. Saye recently led a multi-site pilot study across 13 sexual assault centers in the Southeastern U.S. that compared blind swab and speculum-assisted vaginal/cervical specimen collection methods. These findings inform both clinical training and policy, supporting survivor-centered and trauma-informed approaches in forensic nursing practice. Resources: Saye, J. L., et al. (2025). “Cybersecurity has been oversold for too long—expensive, complicated, and not user-friendly. What small and mid-sized businesses really need are affordable, effective protections delivered with education and consultation,” says Tomas Sjostrom, CISSP and President of Technology Services at James Moore Technology Services. At the MSP Summit, Sjostrom sat down with Doug Green, Publisher of Technology Reseller News, to discuss his session, Establishing a Successful Managed Security Program: The Consultation Imperative. His message to MSPs was clear: success depends on understanding both the client's business and the end user's experience. Key insights from the conversation include: Listen first, then recommend: Understanding the client's culture and user needs is as important as the technology itself. Focus on education: Solutions like multi-factor authentication (MFA) can initially feel inconvenient to users, but with training, they quickly see the security benefits. Avoid tech-first thinking: Deployments fail when MSPs expect technology alone to solve problems without preparing end users for change. Partnerships extend reach: To provide personal, local service across the Southeastern U.S., James Moore Technology Services developed a technical services partnership program, enabling trusted partners to step in as direct resources for clients. By blending consultation, training, and the right level of protection, James Moore Technology Services is helping small and mid-sized businesses stay secure without unnecessary complexity. FIRE BREAKS OUT AT DEFENSE CONTRACTOR FACILITY NEAR PHILLY.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Vatican City: Following recent health concerns, the Vatican confirmed this morning that Pope Francis is suffering from bilateral pneumonia and will be undergoing medical treatment over the next few days/weeks.Economics: Various developments within the world of cryptocurrencies have come to light over the past few weeks. The markets have largely remained unimpressive as the pro-crypto sentiments expressed during Trump's campaign have not materialized in the form of policy. Both the ($ TRUMP) and ($ MELANIA) coins have turned out to largely be very questionable operations, despite Trump's coin having a market cap of over $3 billion.-HomeFront-Pennsylvania: A major fire broke out overnight at SPS Technologies north of Philadelphia. So far the cause of the fire has not been publicly disclosed, and a one-mile shelter-in-place zone remains in effect for the surrounding area. AC: SPS Technologies (who's parent company is Berkshire Hathaway) is a major defense contractor, providing fasteners and various industrial materials/chemicals to the military.Southeastern U.S. - Snowfall estimates remain variable throughout the disaster zones recently subjected to severe flooding. National Weather Service forecasts indicate that the additional rain expected this week won't significantly impact flooding throughout the region. Nevertheless, severe winter weather is expected from the Ozarks to central Appalachia over the next few days.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: In the world of finance, perhaps most interesting are the sheer number of meme-coin rug-pulls that have been conducted at the nationstate level over the past week. In the past, podcasters and influencers would create a meme coin (keeping most of the supply for themselves), then promote that coin heavily to drive the price up, before selling off their entire supply for a large profit. In the world of traditional stock trading something similar is generally known as a Pump-and-Dump scheme. However in the world of crypto a slightly more simple version of this scheme is known as pulling the rug out from underneath investors, i.e. a "rug pull". When it's a meme coin that is started purely for the joke itself and not taken seriously, it's bad enough since this is essentially just fraudulent creators scamming their fans. However, world leaders and nationstates are now apparently engaging in this practice. The President of the Central African Republic launched his own meme coin ($ CAR) on behalf of the nation last week. The coin spiked in value before immediately bottoming out, with most investors suspecting that the President divested at the peak of the coin's value, meaning that a President rug-pulled his own nation's cryptocurrency. A similar situation was reported last week in India, as a government official (with almost 400k followers on X) launched a token that he deliberately claimed (in a since-deleted tweet) as being India's official government token. The issue is that this was done unilaterally without approval, and complicated by the fact that India already has a national cryptocurrency. As expected, the ($ INDIA) token, spiked in value before immediately being flooded with liquidity (as the early investors dumped their holdings), signaling yet another government official with a large following that has openly scammed investors. These types of crypto-fraud have not entirely been confined to the third world, however. Argentine President Javier Milei has drawn much criticism over the past few days after he promoted a meme coin ($ LIBRA) which also turned out to be a very blatant rug-pu

Explore the rise of college bass fishing as a gateway to pro angling, the innovative AI dash cam designed by teens to prevent wildlife collisions, and the best days for fall foliage in New England. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt with The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Episode 200 Details College Bass Fishing's Rise, Teen-Invented Wildlife AI Dashcam & Best Fall Foliage in New England Latest Outdoors & Travel News! SPORTS: RISE OF COLLEGE BASS FISHING College bass fishing has emerged as a significant pathway to professional angling, with top university programs like Bethel University in Tennessee setting the standard. The 2024 Bassmaster College Series, a key event in college fishing, has seen a surge in participation, highlighting the growing popularity of the sport. As college fishing remains a club sport, meaning it is not NCAA-recognized, it opens the doors for students to earn sponsorships and win prize money, making it an attractive option for aspiring professional anglers. Universities like Bethel have pioneered the sport, offering scholarships, full-time coaches, and extensive financial support, which have helped them dominate national rankings. As more schools follow suit, college bass fishing is becoming a significant recruiting tool, drawing in both male and female students from across the U.S. and even internationally. This rise in interest and investment is cementing college bass fishing's place as a key feeder system for professional bass fishing, shaping the future of the sport. The sport's expansion beyond the Southeastern U.S. and into new regions is further fueled by the involvement of Major League Fishing, broadening opportunities for students nationwide. TEENS INVENT THERMAL AI DASHCAM A group of all female high school students from STEM School Highlands Ranch in Denver has developed a groundbreaking AI-powered dashcam designed to prevent wildlife collisions on roads. Using a Flir thermal imager and an AI model, the device detects animals, particularly deer, on roadways before they are visible to drivers, providing crucial warnings that can prevent accidents. The project began as part of the 2024 Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest, driven by the students' desire to address the frequent and costly wildlife-vehicle collisions in Colorado. After exploring various solutions, young women chose thermal imaging for its effectiveness in low-light conditions, when most accidents occur. Their invention, currently in the final prototype phase, aims to alert drivers of potential collisions up to 500 feet ahead, significantly improving reaction times compared to traditional headlights. Despite not winning the national competition, the students remain committed to refining and testing their device. Their innovative approach has the potential to save lives and reduce the financial impact of wildlife collisions across the country. The six New England states—Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island—are top destinations for leaf-peeping enthusiasts. In 2023, New Hampshire alone saw 3.6 million visitors during the fall season. This year, the foliage season is expected to start later due to warm temperatures, but vibrant colors are anticipated thanks to abundant rainfall. Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine are particularly popular for their fall landscapes, with peak viewing expected around Halloween in the northern and western areas, and shortly after in the southern regions. Popular scenic routes for fall colors include Vermont's Route 7, the Upper Connecticut River Valley Loop, and Maine's Castine and Penobscot Bay Loop. For those seeking an urban fall experience, cities like Boston, Newport, and Portland offer beautiful foliage alongside cultural attractions. The best time to visit for peak color is mid-October, especially from October 12-15 in the northern parts of New England. Zhigang Peng, Georgia Institute of Technology Earthquakes are not frequent in the Southeastern United States (SEUS), but they do occur in areas with long-term seismic activity and in new regions with no clear seismic history. Most of these earthquakes have relatively small magnitudes (less than 1) and are therefore not well recorded by the current seismic network. Some are extremely shallow, with hypocenters less than a few kilometers deep. In this talk, I will provide an update on our recent efforts to study shallow microearthquakes in several regions of the SEUS using dense nodal seismic networks and advanced processing techniques such as machine learning and template matching. This includes the 2020 magnitude 5.2 Sparta earthquake sequence in North Carolina, the Elgin-Lugoff earthquake swarm in South Carolina that began in December 2021, and the rock exfoliation event at Arabia Mountain in Georgia on July 17, 2023. Studying these extremely shallow events may offer new insights into the physical processes of earthquake nucleation.

This month's episode features two rockstars out of the Southeast. Meagan Evans, Executive Director of the Southeast Climbers Coalition (SCC) and Daniel Dunn, Access Fund's Southeast Regional Manager. Together they have worked to steward and conserve some of the region's most cherished climbing landscapes. Most recently, the SCC protected a 58-acre boulderfield in northern Alabama known as The Citadel Boulders—an area that the SCC has been working to protect for nearly 20 years. Now the SCC, along with other major partners, are focusing their efforts on how climbing can contribute to broader conservation efforts in the Southeast. From Tennessee to Georgia and Alabama, the Southeastern U.S. is home to some of the most impressive and expansive climbing resources in the country. Within that area, the SCC sees thousands of annual climber visits resulting in a remarkable economic impact for the region. Climbers bring in millions of dollars in spending, supporting thousands of jobs. We wrap up the episode exploring some of these economic contributions and how climbing will play a big role in future conservation efforts. 4:46- Meg's intro 9:26- Daniel's intro 13:18- The Citadel acquisition 20:46- The early days of the Citadel boulders 24:08- Using strategic messaging to communicate about threatened areas 33:13- Citadel size and characteristics 36:36- Stewardship and infrastructure at the Citadel 39:49 Alabama's Recreational Use Statute 47:16- Categories of land protection 55:15- Climbing economics and the future of conservation in the southeast 1:03:20- Accelerating climbing access in Tennessee Southeastern Climbers Coalition - https://www.seclimbers.org SCC's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/seclimbers/ Citadel Secured! - https://www.accessfund.org/latest-news/victory-iconic-southeast-bouldering-area-secured Citadel Boulders - https://www.seclimbers.org/project/the_citadel_boulders/ Tennessee Economic Impact Study - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1RJKqRlzX29oYP1aPusRjP5BGdwcd7MWT/view?usp=sharing Tennessee Access Accelerator Report - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1dfuvshG9GZrVliDEdRNkKUB8Pgd1L6UY/view?usp=sharing Access Fund's Acquisition History - https://www.accessfund.org/capabilities/acquisition-history Access Fund's Land Holdings & Conservation Easements - https://www.accessfund.org/capabilities/land-holdings

In the 1990s, eagles in the Southeastern U.S. began dying of a mysterious brain disease. Many years of research identified the culprit: a cyanobacteria that grows on an invasive aquatic plant called Hydrilla — also known as waterthyme. Fish ingested the cyanobacteria, and eagles ate the affected fish. Biologists are now working to contain Hydrilla to prevent more harm to ecosystems. Learn more about invasive plants and their effect on birds, waterways and more on this special season of the Bring Birds Back podcast.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? He parlayed this experience into becoming an investor in commercial real estate focused primarily on the retail sector. In 2020 he founded Indvestia Capital, a syndication group investing in retail opportunities. In the midst of the pandemic, Vick saw an opportunity while others were bearish on the sector. Since inception Indvestia has closed on 3 properties with a total value of $7m and they are under contract for another one which will push them over the $10m mark for assets.
