In the twentieth century, the jetpack became synonymous with the idea of a ‘futuristic society.' Appearing in cartoons and magazines, it felt like a matter of time before people could ride a jetpack to work. But jetpacks never became a mainstream technology, leaving many to wonder…why? In this episode of 99 Percent Invisible, producer Chris Berube travels to the Udvar-Hazy Center of the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum to find out for himself. This episode was produced by Chris Berube. He spoke with Bill Suitor, Don Erwin, and the Smithsonian's Colleen Anderson. David Taylor reported on the rocket belt for The Washington Post in 2022, and Steve Lehto wrote about the belt, and other jetpack technology, in his book The Great American Jetpack.Transcript available here: https://99percentinvisible.org/episode/rocket-man/transcript/

A genuine crowd-pleaser that couldn't please enough crowds in 1988, Tucker: The Man and His Dream has finally found an audience. Tim defends 80s Coppola and calls out critics who dismissed his post-Godfather II output; Dan talks about the film's enthusiasm for its subject and how that enthusiasm helps the viewer feel like those who find themselves in any great leader's orbit. Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, Wordsworth, and Emerson all find their way into the conversation. Larry David may want us to curb our enthusiasm, but even he couldn't keep Tucker down. So hold that tiger and give it a listen! Steve Lehto's Preston Tucker and His Battle to Build the Car of Tomorrow tells the story upon which Coppola's film is based—and has a Foreword by Jay Leno, who owns one of the 46 or 47 Tucker Torpedoes in existence. Pride. When it's channeled right, it's a good thing. Pride in our accomplishments, or those of our loved ones, is great. But it's not for nothin' that pride is one of the seven deadly sins. When it goes unchecked, ya see, it tends to create a particular kind of tunnel vision. A lens through which you can only see what you want to see, and anything that doesn't fit within that view becomes too threatening. Gets ignored, or denied…or covered up. Apply that to a homicide investigation, and you've got a disaster in the making. We're about to hear about a case like that, where justice fell victim to pride. A case where one detective's arrogant one-sightedness stole ten years of a young man's life, and left a grieving family without answers. Some background on this episode - Last time we had Steve Lehto on the podcast (for Tucker: The Man and his Dream), we started talking about the Chrysler Turbine Car. It was Steve who told us it actually was center stage in an obscure movie, so... Steve Lehto of Lehtoslaw.com joins us once again to discuss The Lively Set! This 1964 movie is almost a propaganda piece for Chrysler's engineering division and their efforts to make a turbine powered car. The legend at the center of it is Chrysler's experimental Turbine Car - they made 55 of them. 54 were painted bronze and one was painted white just for this movie. Steve is the definitive authority on the Turbine Car. He literally wrote the book on it. He is the source for most of the Wikipedia page, and he got invited by Jay Leno to drive the Turbine Car in his collection. Needless to say you're in for some fascinating stories. Martin talks to author Steve Lehto about Preston Tucker and His Battle to Build the Car of Tomorrow. After World War II, the American automobile industry was reeling. Having spent years building tanks and airplanes for the army, the car companies would need years more to retool their production to meet the demands of the American public, for whom they had not made any cars since 1942. And then in stepped Preston Tucker. This salesman extraordinaire from Ypsilanti, Michigan, had built race cars before the war, and had designed prototypes for the military during it. Now, gathering a group of brilliant automotive designers, engineers, and promoters, he announced the creation of a revolutionary new car: the Tucker '48, the first car in almost a decade to be built fresh from the ground up. Tucker's car would include ingenious advances in design and engineering that other car companies could not match. With a rear engine, rear-wheel drive, a safety-glass windshield that would pop out in case of an accident, a padded dashboard, independent suspension, and automatic transmission, it would be more attractive and aerodynamic—and safer—than any other car on the road. But as the public eagerly awaited Tucker's car of tomorrow, powerful forces in Washington were trying to bring him down. An SEC commissioner with close ties to Detroit's Big Three automakers deliberately leaked information about an investigation the agency was conducting, suggesting that Tucker was bilking investors with a massive fraud scheme. Headlines accused him a perpetrating a hoax and claimed that his cars weren't real and his factory was a sham. In fact, the Tucker '48 sedan was genuine, and everyone who saw it was impressed by what this upstart carmaker had achieved. But the SEC's investigation had compounded the company's financial problems and management conflicts, and a superior product was not enough to keep Tucker's dream afloat. In Preston Tucker and His Battle to Build the Car of Tomorrow, author Steve Lehto tackles the story of Tucker's incredible rise and tragic fall, relying on a huge trove of documents that has been used by no other writer to date. It is the first comprehensive, authoritative account of Tucker's magnificent car and his battles with the government. The interview was recorded on July 6, 2016
