EPISODE 170: Francis Ford Coppola. The name alone conjures up iconic images: Marlon Brando's chilling stare, helicopters thundering over Vietnam, and a young Al Pacino taking over the family business. But beyond the Godfather films lies a treasure trove of Coppola's work from the 70s and 80s. In this episode, Jason and guest Megan Kearns delve into five of his most intriguing films from this period: The Conversation (1974): A paranoid surveillance expert gets tangled in a web of deceit with chilling consequences. Apocalypse Now (1979): Coppola's epic journey into the heart of darkness of the Vietnam War. Rumble Fish (1983): A stylish and introspective look at teenage alienation starring Matt Dillon and Mickey Rourke. Peggy Sue Got Married (1986): A housewife gets transported back to her high school days in a delightful time-travel comedy. Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988): The true story of visionary car designer Preston Tucker and his fight against the Detroit giants. Join us as we: Debate the merits of each film: Is Apocalypse Now a masterpiece of cinema or a bloated spectacle? Uncover hidden gems: Is Rumble Fish an underrated coming-of-age story? YOU"RE NOT ALONE>>>Website: https://www.nami.org/HomePhone: NAMI HELPLINE 800-950-6264 or TEXT "helpline" to 62640In 2020, the nation took a significant step forward with the enactment of the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act, a bill NAMI advocated for that created a nationwide three-digit number (988) to assist people experiencing a mental health or suicidal crisis. This number is now available in communities across the country.NAMI recognizes that other organizations have drawn distinctions between what diagnoses are considered “mental health conditions” as opposed to “mental illnesses.” We intentionally use the terms “mental health conditions” and “mental illness/es” interchangeably.A mental illness is a condition that affects a person's thinking, feelings, behavior, or mood. These conditions deeply impact day-to-day living and may also affect the ability to relate to others. If you have — or think you might have — a mental illness, the first thing you must know is that you are not alone. Mental health conditions are far more common than you think, mainly because people don't like to, or are scared to, talk about them. However:1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year1 in 20 U.S. adults experience serious mental illness each year1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year50% of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24A mental health condition isn't the result of one event. Research suggests multiple linking causes. Genetics, environment, and lifestyle influence whether someone develops a mental health condition. A stressful job or home life makes some people more susceptible, as do traumatic life events. Biochemical processes and circuits and basic brain structure may play a role, too.None of this means that you're broken or that you, or your family, did something “wrong.” Mental illness is no one's fault. And for many people, recovery — including meaningful roles in social life, school, and work — is possible, especially when you start treatment early and play a strong role in your own recovery process.THERE'S HELP & HOPE...

Get ready for a cinematic exploration of innovation and intellectual property as depicted in popular movies about inventors and creators. In this episode, IP Goes Pop!® co-hosts Michael Snyder and Joseph Gushue, peel back the layers of iconic movies that not only inspire us, but also shed light on the realities of building successful businesses and protecting ideas.  Starting with 1988's Tucker: The Man and His Dream, your hosts dive into the story of Preston Tucker and his revolutionary automobile, the Tucker 48. This tale not only epitomizes the spirit of disrupting the status quo but also draws parallels with modern auto-innovators like Tesla. Tucker's journey sheds light on the crucial role of patents in protecting groundbreaking ideas, emphasizing the continued real-world relevance of Tucker's innovations in today's automobiles. The episode next moves through the intricate mazes of copyrights, branding, and partnerships. The Social Network, which depicts the founding of Facebook, serves as a prime example of the potential legal pitfalls that can emerge in the creation of successful companies. It delves into the entangled web of legal battles and the importance of safeguarding ideas in the tech world. This evolution, of what is now known as Meta, highlights the necessity of meticulous contracts and legal representation at different stages of bringing an idea into the world. Another extraordinary origin story is that of the McDonald's franchise, as portrayed in The Founder. While the success of the McDonald's franchise demonstrates how effective branding and strategic IP licensing can catapult a company to global recognition, this cautionary tale of partnerships offers valuable lessons for businesses of all sizes. Ultimately the McDonalds brothers lost control of their company, their name, and their IP such as the “golden arches,” when they were outmaneuvered by an emboldened Ray Kroc and a “handshake” agreement.  The film Flash of Genius draws attention to the pitfalls and triumphs of patent litigation. Lesson learned are especially valuable for inventors and creators, as it underscores the complexities of litigation, the importance of having competent legal representation, and the dangers of self-representation in intellectual property matters. Listeners will come away from this episode not only entertained but also enriched with a deeper understanding of the intersection between intellectual property and popular culture. Whether you're an entrepreneur, a legal professional, a student, or simply a movie buff, IP Goes Pop!® offers a captivating and educational experience that will entertain and inform. Don't miss out on this engaging and enlightening journey through the world of IP and movies!  Starting points: 2:32 Disruption, Technology, and Patents in Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988) 9:40 Copyright and Idea Protection in The Social Network (2010) 16:43 Branding, Trade Secrets, and Franchising in The Founder (2016) 25:04 The Case of Joy Mangano's Miracle Mop in Joy (2015) 28:55 Patents in Flash of Genius (2008) 34:16 Final Thoughts

Movie Review: Big government and big business used big media to crush the little man who was just trying to build a better mousetrap of a car! That's right, our beloved Big 3 all agreed on something - and that something was getting their corrupt state senator to smoosh the competition of Preston Tucker for daring to want to offer a high speed, disc brake, seat belt equipped new car that could really move. I'm betting Elon Musk watched this movie, took notes on what NOT to do, then launched a car company without getting killed. That's all tongue in cheek of course (hopefully)! This is a movie that will inspire you, intrigue you, and make you want to learn more about the Tucker Automobile….but definitely the man who gave it name.  It'll also make you want to smoke, drink whiskey,  and wear suits with fedoras. I don't know how historically accurate it was in truth but let's assume that it was in the ballpark.  Sure made for a good movie!  10 Corndogs Patreon Peeps, the year 2022 will be an important one for Patreon specifically, and if you'd consider jumping up to the $5 level it would sure help. Museums have impossible business models during the coronavirus. But in the business of celebrating history, creativity reigns. When public visits aren't feasible, creativity prevails. Like many museums, automobile museums can virtually present their exhibits. Car enthusiasts and history buffs can still enjoy the legacies of vintage vehicles.   The AACA Museum of Hersey (Pennsylvania) offers virtual tours and videos during the coronavirus. Jeff Bliemeister, executive director of the AACA Museum in Hersey, Pennsylvania, is our guest this week on The Weekly Driver Podcast. AACA Museum features Tucker Co-hosts Bruce Aldrich and James Raia discuss with Bliemeister how the facility, one of the country's most prominent auto museums, maintains its online videos, tours and special exhibits without allowing physical visitors. Bliemeister, an avid vintage car and truck enthusiast, explains in a series of videos the exhibits featured the 71,000-square foot facility that opened in 2003. We've included Part 1 of 3 celebrating Tucker, with Bliemeister as the commentator. Close to the Hersey's Chocolate World, the vehicle collectors' nirvana is self-described as "Offering noteworthy exhibits and an ever-growing permanent collection and welcoming guests of all ages to enjoy the wonders of invention, interactive educational displays, famous and one-of-a-kind vehicles, and family fun." In addition to a half-dozen permanent exhibits, the facility has numerous classes, including learning how to drive a Ford Model-T. While the various galleries cover a wide range of automotive eras, the AACA is widely heralded for its designated as having the world's largest collection of Tucker Automobiles and memorabilia. It's officially called the Cammack Tucker Collection and is named after Tucker historian and collector David Cammack. A focus on the 1940s wouldn't be complete with a detailed examination of Preston Tucker and his innovative vehicles. The display is an interactive exhibit chronicling Tucker's vision, determination, and struggles to build the “Car of Tomorrow.” The Tucker history is presented on the AACA website in a three-part virtual tour. The AACA Museum, which also houses the Museum of Bus Transportation Collection, sponsors workshops and activities designed to raise public awareness and appreciation of the role the automobile has played in shaping 20th century America. A popular exhibit started in the spring of 2020 is The “Age of Aquarius.” According to the museum, the exhibition "harkens back to the era of tie-dye and muscle cars. Times were changing. So were the vehicles manufactured and marketed from 1967 (the release of the Broadway musical Hair) through the mid-1970s. The 'flower power' generation manifested itself vividly in the bold cars produced in Detroit and beyond." Another recent exhibit in the museum's Williams-Clyne Gallery features DeSoto. The display, guest curated by the Colonial Chapter of the National DeSoto Club, features vintage vehicles, along with an array of DeSoto dealer promotional material, magazine advertisements, and memorabilia. From the beginning Chrysler Corporation introduced the DeSoto brand in 1928 to fill the more upscale role in Chrysler's offerings. Wanting the car to be perceived as strong and exotic, Walter Chrysler named the division after the famed Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto. Additional displays include elaborate collections of horn buttons, 5000 model busses and a display of Pennsylvania law enforcement vehicles. Classes for students of all ages are offered. Volunteer opportunities and membership are also available. Visit the AACA Museum HERE. The Weekly Driver Podcast encourages and appreciates feedback from our listeners. Martin talks to author Steve Lehto about Preston Tucker and His Battle to Build the Car of Tomorrow. After World War II, the American automobile industry was reeling. Having spent years building tanks and airplanes for the army, the car companies would need years more to retool their production to meet the demands of the American public, for whom they had not made any cars since 1942. And then in stepped Preston Tucker. This salesman extraordinaire from Ypsilanti, Michigan, had built race cars before the war, and had designed prototypes for the military during it. Now, gathering a group of brilliant automotive designers, engineers, and promoters, he announced the creation of a revolutionary new car: the Tucker '48, the first car in almost a decade to be built fresh from the ground up. Tucker's car would include ingenious advances in design and engineering that other car companies could not match. With a rear engine, rear-wheel drive, a safety-glass windshield that would pop out in case of an accident, a padded dashboard, independent suspension, and automatic transmission, it would be more attractive and aerodynamic—and safer—than any other car on the road. But as the public eagerly awaited Tucker's car of tomorrow, powerful forces in Washington were trying to bring him down. An SEC commissioner with close ties to Detroit's Big Three automakers deliberately leaked information about an investigation the agency was conducting, suggesting that Tucker was bilking investors with a massive fraud scheme. Headlines accused him a perpetrating a hoax and claimed that his cars weren't real and his factory was a sham. In fact, the Tucker '48 sedan was genuine, and everyone who saw it was impressed by what this upstart carmaker had achieved. But the SEC's investigation had compounded the company's financial problems and management conflicts, and a superior product was not enough to keep Tucker's dream afloat. In Preston Tucker and His Battle to Build the Car of Tomorrow, author Steve Lehto tackles the story of Tucker's incredible rise and tragic fall, relying on a huge trove of documents that has been used by no other writer to date. It is the first comprehensive, authoritative account of Tucker's magnificent car and his battles with the government. The interview was recorded on July 6, 2016
