Given the fact that it seems like Hollywood churns out nothing but sequels, you would think the industry would have perfected the genre by now. Some sequels are pretty darn good, but many believe the perfect movie sequel came out 50 years ago this month. Of course, we're talking about Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather: Part II. It's not only considered the greatest sequel of all time, it's also considered one of the greatest movies of all time. So why does Godfather II work, and where so many other sequels fall short? Is Russell Wilson the kryptonite to the Steelers beating the Eagles? He has plenty of success in that stadium over the course of his career. But is it enough to buck the trend of the Steelers getting beat up in Philly? The guys also got caught in laughter as Bill Belichick is introduced as the UNC head coach. WVU has re-hired Rich Rodriguez as head football coach. Can he turn back the clock? Will his sequel with the Mountaineers be remembered more like Godfather II or Caddyshack II? PG columnist Jason Mackey joined the show. How does Jason feel about the Spencer Horwitz deal? Jason talked us through the conversations the Pirates front office may be having about players being available via trade. What type of player could they get back for Jared Jones or Mitch Keller? Will the payroll be increased from last season? Will it reach $100M? Jason isn't sure that the payroll ever goes up while Paul Skenes is on the roster. Jason doesn't agree with the Pirates approach.
SEASON 3 EPISODE 77: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Trump's return to the world of TV interviews is important (and crazy) but the shooting of the head of United Health Care just blocks from my home actually seems to be one of the watershed moments of 21st Century American Politics. We have often descended into the slough of despond that all political parties, voting, law, government, the entirety of the power structure mean nothing and that the only way to change things is violence. I think we're entering such a stage. If so: fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy night. AS TO TRUMP apart from his latest threat to imprison opponents (everybody on the January 6 House Committee should go to jail) did anybody notice his insistence that we are "subsidizing" Mexico and Canada by $100 Billion a year and at those rates they should become states. Wait. What? Mr. Numb Nuts Psycho President? If Mexico is a STATE in the United States – you know, where you are right now – the people LIVING there become CITIZENS of the United States, so not only can't you deport people from the US State of Mexico… but you can't put up a wall between Texas and the state of Mexico and in fact you can't inhibit movement BETWEEN Mexico and any state of the union. I hope somebody told MAGA about Trump's new Mexico solution: make it a state. That'd be two senators from Mexico and if New York has 20 million people, 26 congressmen, Mexico with130 million people at 13 congressmen per 10 million residents would get 169 Congressional seats. Trump proposes giving Mexico 169 seats in the US Congress. Also a GOP Senate operative uses the A-word on Tulsi Gabbard, and a Trump operative is ready to blackmail Republican Senators to get Pete Hegseth confirmed anyway. B-Block (25:00) THE OTHER WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: "Democratic" Governor Polis again sides with Sideshow Bob Kennedy. Laura Loomer isn't just hateful, she's stupid. And Marshal Petain would be proud: Jeff Bezos, Joe Scarborough, and Mika Brzezinski all double down on collaborating with the Trump Regime. C-Block (35:55) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: My Lunch With Elie. How a delightful afternoon getting to meet Elie Mystal meant I did NOT meet Martin Scorsese. That, in turns, evokes the story of Francis Ford Coppola unintentionally paying a former colleague of mine something like a million dollars to be in the background of one scene in Godfather II.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Film lovers have long heard of the legendary names that built Hollywood into a global entertainment empire - Goldwyn, Mankiewicz, Laemmle, Mayer, Loews. But it was The Schenck Brothers, a ruthless pair of Bowery boys, who worked their way up to launch the Hollywood studio system, creating a lasting legacy of 'star maker machinery" while simultaneously breaking all the business rules. MOGULS: The Lives and Times of Film Pioneers Nicholas and Joseph Schenck (Sept. 24, 2024) is co-authored by Producers Guild of America member and film director Craig Singer, and Brooklyn-based writer Michael Benson (Gangsters vs. Nazis). MOGULS is a noirish, incredible Hollywood history. The Schenck brothers held controlling interests in three major studios: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), Twentieth Century-Fox, and United Artists (UA). But chances are you've never heard of them because they preferred to run their global empire behind closed doors. Nick was Louis B. Mayer's boss. Think Mank meets Chinatown and LA Confidential, with a heaping dose of Hail, Caesar! and The Godfather II (of course). Twice as powerful as the Warner Brothers, the Schencks were immigrants who quietly ran Hollywood out of the spotlight, bringing film into a world of blazing color. They were as American as jazz and baseball, as flashy as Gatsby, as cunning as gangsters, who controlled a third of the motion picture industry at their height - and were some of the richest men in America.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

A genuine crowd-pleaser that couldn't please enough crowds in 1988, Tucker: The Man and His Dream has finally found an audience. Tim defends 80s Coppola and calls out critics who dismissed his post-Godfather II output; Dan talks about the film's enthusiasm for its subject and how that enthusiasm helps the viewer feel like those who find themselves in any great leader's orbit. Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, Wordsworth, and Emerson all find their way into the conversation. Larry David may want us to curb our enthusiasm, but even he couldn't keep Tucker down. So hold that tiger and give it a listen! The only thing more predictable than a sunrise in the east is a Hamas claim that Israel bombed a Gaza hospital and that the Western media would report it as dictated because the story was just too good to check, though we always thought the mainstream media employed—or so they told us in 2004—"layer and layers of fact-checkers." Once again, we see whose side our media is on. And it's not ours—or Israel's.Topic 2: Time to "decolonize" all the academic departments that won't shut up about "colonialism." Full stop. And has anyone in DC figured out yet that the move by renegade Republicans to oust Speaker McCarthy and leave the Speaker's chair empty was a clever plot to get Democrats to vote for a de facto government shutdown, and stymie aid to Ukraine? Who are the dumb guys now?And what to make of the plea deals of Sydney Powell and Kenneth Cheesebro in the Georgia prosecutions of the supposed Trump RICO conspiracy? We speculate that both Powell and Cheesebro might reprise the great star turn of Frankie Pentangelo in Godfather II.

Matt, Chris, and Derrick discuss unpopular film/tv opinions and continue our the/Ology series studying The Godfather Part II directed by Francis Ford Coppola, starring Al Pacino.
For every Dark Knight, there is a Batman & Robin, for every Empire Strikes back, there is a Phantom Menace, for every Godfather II, there is a Godfather III. This week Formidable Opponents is talking about that perfect imbalance of bad sequels. Those movies whose predecessors brought you back thirsty for more and left you completely disappointed. Look, they can't all be House Party 2 but there's no doubt that when a hit movie rakes it in, studios keep drinking from that well until it runs dry. Then it's the Heisler Television Championship Series + TV History!!!
So where do you go after making the most successful movie of all time? Why make another of course. After Star Wars proved all naysayers wrong and was a massive success, George Lucas knew he had free reign to continue the story he had written a few years before. But if you thought the first movie had problems, wait until you hear what happened on the second. But with a highly competent director -and Lucas's former USC professor- at the helm in Irvin Kershner, The Empire Strikes Back, once again defied odds and in many ways, proved to be an even bigger success than its predecessor. So much so that it is called by many The Godfather II of science fiction movies. But do the Three Men And A Retrospective Podcast agree? Matt gave a little bit of a preview of his thoughts on this blockbuster at the end of last week's show, and there are debates to be had in this two hour plus review of one of the most successful sequels of all time.
“Here's To You, Rachel Robinson,” chapters 21-22. OMG, can you EVEN handle the excitement?! Rachel and Paul go on their date(?!) and Cousin Tarren throws a major curveball. Jeremy Dragon and his Monopoly car pay a surprise visit and (spoiler!) there's some epic Frenching by the Raccoon Tree. Join Alison and Jody as they journey back to 1993 for some Palfrey's Pond shenanigans, dramatic readings, and a fascinating Special Report on Ellis Island name changes. Godfather II, how dare you? Depending on when you not only grew up, but grew up with the horror genre could define what films you like, and what you don't like. But then there are other fans that open up the borders and search outside their comfort zone. In this episode, we discuss those ideas with our special guest, S.A. Bradley, author of Screaming for Pleasure: How Horror Makes You Happy and Healthy, as well as the host for the podcast Hellbent for Horror. This isn't an episode about specific films, though plenty are mentioned and discussed in great detail, but also on how they are received by the current audiences, as well as the older, and sometimes younger audiences, and what the differences are. These are the films mentioned in this episode: 3 on a Meathook, Anthropophagus (1981), Babadook (2014), Barbarian (2022), Bunny Lake is Missing (1965), Burial Ground (1981), The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920), Cannibal Ferox (1981), Cocaine Bear (2023), The Cursed (2021), Curse of Frankenstein (1957), Dark Shadows (1966-71), Dawn of the Dead (1978), Dracula (1931), Deranged (1974), Devil Dog: Hound of Hell (1978), The Exorcist (1973), The Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977), Frankenstein (1931), Friday the 13th: Part III (1982), From Beyond (1986), The Godfather (1972), The Godfather II (1974), The Green Slime (1968), Halloween (1978), The Haunting (1963), Hellraiser (2022), Hereditary (2018), Jaws (1975), Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977), Maniac (1980), Midsomer (2019), Night of the Living Dead (1968), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), Nosferatu (1922), The Phantom of the Opera (1925), Psycho (1960), The Omen (1976), Onibaba (1964), Ringu (1998), The Ritual (2017), Rocky (1976), Rocky II (1979), Scream 6 (2023), Skinamarink (2022), Sleep Tight (2011), Snuff (1975), Taxi Driver (1976), Tenebrae (1982), Terrified (2017), Terrifier (2016), The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), The Thing (1982), The Thing from Another World (1951), Tombs of the Blind Dead (1972)
Adam Prince, former Director of Development for Robert Duvall's production company, joins the podcast to discuss the great Robert Duvall in general, his perhaps lesser-known anarchic sense of humor in specific (Duvall apparently was a legendary practitioner of mooning in his younger days), his world-class acting talent, and his precise, in-the-moment methodology, in specific. We cover general Duvall material in the front half, and then specifically discuss Duvall's repeat-viewing-rewarding performance in The Godfather Part II in the back half.Duvall might be my favorite actor of all time, and it was a real treat to get a direct, one-to-one report of many years at Duvall's side from Adam, in what became our longest episode ever of the podcast.Come to Watch This Tonight as your podcast for best movie recommendations. SEASON FINALE! MAMMA MIA & MAMMA MIA: HERE WE GO AGAIN! We have watched Meryl Streep movies for nearly six months. Did we learn anything? Great question! Listen and find out with our season finale featuring ALL of your favorite ABBA songs X2 along with songs you probably weren't familiar with in the second Mamma Mia film. MAMMA MIA (2008) is a jukebox musical adapted from the stage production of the same name. Phyllidia Lloyd directs, as she did on stage (and will direct Streep again to an Oscar a few years later in The Iron Lady, covered on our season premiere). It's a vacation movie, it's a movie meant to make people smile. It's pretty silly but it works for most of the hosts. One of our hosts hates musicals, however, and hated this movie. Which one? Grumple McSourpuss! MAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN (2018) took a decade to get made because they couldn't figure out a tenuous narrative on which they could hang a bunch of songs onto until screenwriter Richard Curtis' daughter told him they should do The Godfather II plot; a child and their parent at the same time in their lives. A prequel and a sequel all in one! It also means that Meryl Streep's character is dead when the sequel begins - cool or yuck?Amanda Seyfried as Streep's daughter takes over in the sequel portion and Lily James plays young Streep, whose eyes apparently change color like a puppy between the olden times and the 2008 original. Ol Parker directs and that is apparently his real name unless Ol is his middle name and Good is his first. Do we like it? Is it possibly better than the original? STREEP WRAP-UP: Favorite lists, least favorite lists, a re-litigation on the lack of any merits whatsoever on She-Devil and much, much more. Ken, Jack and Thomas talk about Streep one last time with season-long guest Andi, the best, who bids farewell to ever talking movies with us again this episode. Laughter. Tears. Fade Out. The End (until the next episode). The Godfather II of animated movies? We're all just toys in Andy's toybox. This was Brooke's first time watching this. Our histories with the movie. The most Andy has ever cried at a movie. The intense pressure and timeline of making this movie. The time it got deleted off Pixar's servers. Star Wars references! The first 5 minutes vs. Lightyear. Cursed premise. Could use more music. Gender imbalance. Are Bo Peep and Woody involved because she's the only girl toy or because there's actually something there? Sideshow Bob. Sadness for Stinky Pete. Should we take our Funko Pops out of the box? Tune in next week for Melissa's take on Spanish Buzz. An amazing rant about the Great British Bake Off Mexican Week. Box office. Rex as representation of mental illness. Preparing for Pixar tears. Kitt the toy surgeon. Twiggy and Fatso the penguins. Best lines are also the best visual gags. The outtakes! Geri's Game! Do we or do we not mess with the Fey? Sarah Mclachlan and the peak of sadness, “I Will Remember You”, what if Buble/Goulet sang Sarah Mclachlan songs? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/kissyourfranchisegoodbye/message

This Week on Fabulous Film and Friends, we're ringing the Round 2 bell of our Francis Ford Coppola vs. Martin Scorsese masters of cinema fight for the crown of greatest American Filmmaker as we compare Mob Epics 1972/74's Godfathers I &II starring Al Pacino, Marlon Brando, James Caan, Richard Castalleno, John Cazale, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton, Abe Vigoda, Michael V. Gazzo and Lee Strasberg to name but a few, to 1990's Goodfellas, starring Ray Liotta, Robert DeNiro, Joe Pesci, Lorrain Bracco, and Paul Sorvino. Joining me once again in my Steadicam shot through the Coconut Grove of Cinema loving Wiseguys and gals are my sister Roseanne Caputi, also known as "Kid Kitchen Gloves," cuz she's always doing the dishes while we're gulping down our sausage and peppers, then there's Kendrick “Two Things” Wright, because he never brings up just one thing when he wants to make a point, his partner in crime Dante “The Director” Oliviero cuz he's the only one among us who's always making movies, and finally Alex “Mr. Mimic” Robertson, cuz he's always mimicking people. So while it wasn't mandatory, I felt we should watch Godfather II in addition to the Godfather as the two really are just one long movie, but technically we have three movies to compare totaling 9 hours of screentime. The synopses: First, The Godfather's I & II chart the rise and fall of the the Corleone family led by patriarch Vito Corleone as he withstands an assassination attempt and then hands off his criminal empire to his son Michael, whom he hoped would avoid a life of corruption and one day become a great American politician. Conversely Goodfellas catalogues the life and times of actual Wiseguy Henry Hill who joined the mob as teenager in a childhood dream come true and evolves from petty crook to high end theif and hijacker, accessory to murder and ultimately finger pointer in the federal witness protection program. Okay, here are the rules again: We going to go around the panel and quickly state whose work we prefer in as many cinematic components as we can cover in what will probably be 3 hours. The Categories are: Acting Screenplay CinematographyProduction DesignMusicEditingDirection
This is a very special episode of YKY. Joining the gang tonight is Gary Goldstein. A fan of the show who wanted wanted to get on our podcast who also happens to be an LA Times movie critic. On top of that he worked on the marketing on a film we discussed in a previous episode: Streets of Fire. So we have a great discussion about that and his choice 1976's classic...Taxi Driver. Starring Robert DeNiro in his first role after Godfather II, Cybil Shepard, Albert Brooks, Peter Boyle, Harvey Keitel and a 14 year old Jodie Foster. A gritty and grimy 70's film that is a tough watch . Interesting takes all around. Let us know what you think. You....talking to me...I'm the only one typing here.

Episode 10 revisits Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather on its 50 anniversary with Dan Moldea, an investigative journalist and best-selling author who specializes in organized crime. Based on the 1969 novel about a Mob family written by Mario Puzo and directed by Francis Ford Coppola, The Godfather is praised for its cinematic artistry, performances and storytelling around an organized crime family at the end of World War II. But does The Godfather romanticize organized crime? It's 50 years since The Godfather was released, the first of three films that have had a huge impact in their own right and on so much that followed them, from The Sopranos to The Simpsons. Christina Newland and Carl Anka discuss the power of the films and their legacy as Godfather II joins The Godfather on cinematic re-release. Our Generation is a new play by Alecky Blythe, the author of London Road, whose particular technique of verbatim theatre this time involved following a group of young people in the secondary school years and just beyond for five years. The snapshot of exams, phones, relationships, dreams and aspirations that's resulted is at the National Theatre and then Chichester. It's reviewed by poet Anthony Anaxagorou and critic Susannah Clapp. Paul Dano discusses his role as The Riddler in new film The Batman, and reflects on the particular quality shared by many of the characters he has played. And Anthony Anaxagorou and fellow poet Hannah Lowe, who's just won the Costa Book of the Year Award for her collection The Kids, each recommend a new poetry collection.
