With the Fourth of July just days away, officials from the Virginia Department of Fire Programs are reminding people about the importance of fireworks safety. There were eight fatal incidents involving fireworks in the nation last year, including one in Virginia. A total of about 9,700 injuries nationally also were attributed to fireworks incidents. “Misuse of fireworks can be deadly,” said Virginia State Fire Marshal Billy Hux. "Opt for safety this holiday by enjoying fireworks at a professionally organized show." During a press briefing yesterday, Governor Tate Reeves shared his concerns over the viability of the the health care system.State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs has been warning of the impending risks to the system. He says the virus causes a strain on hospitals because severe cases can often need weeks of care.Yesterday's press conference was the first time Governor Reeves appeared publicly since the bill to remove the state flag was passed and signed. He likened the weeks leading up to the move a difficult family conversation, and spoke to those who feared a flag change might lead to the removal of monuments. Leaders of the legislature were on hand at the capitol for the final lowering of the 1894 flag that flies above the grounds. During a brief ceremony, flags were presented to Reuben Anderson, President of the Board at the Department of Archives and History. Anderson was also the first black judge to serve on the Mississippi Supreme Court. However, this is also the time of year that the National Council on Fireworks Safety reminds the public of the safe and responsible use of consumer fireworks. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, 230 people on average go the emergency room every day with fireworks-related injuries in the month around the July 4th holiday. To prevent burns and other injuries the Cleveland clinic advises: don’t ignite fireworks while holding them don’t lean over fireworks while lighting the fuse don’t attempt to relight fireworks that don’t go off keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby and soak fireworks with water when they are done

An end-of-year Fatality Report details the number of Mississippi law enforcement officers that have been killed in the line of duty.Plus, practicing fire and fireworks safety this New Year's Eve.And, a mother's mission to reduce drunk driving fatalities in Mississippi.Segment 1:The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund has released an End of Year Law Enforcement Officer Fatalities Report. The report finds that over 100 law enforcement officers were killed in the line of duty in 2019. Four of those deaths occurred in Mississippi. Marcia Ferranto is CEO of the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund. She talks with us about the report's conclusions.Segment 2:Tonight, across the country and the state, many will celebrate the New Year with fireworks. Others may welcome it with bonfires. In either case, John Pope, President of the Mississippi Firefighters Association, urges caution. As he tells our Kobee Vance, safety is paramount when handling fireworks.Segment 3:The Mississippi Highway Patrol arrested 95 drunk drivers and a record 10 people died during the Thanksgiving holiday. This Christmas there were 39 DUI's and 5 deaths. Sherrel Clark with Mother's Against Drunk Driving Mississippi warns people against the dangers of drunk driving. The 53-year old says her younger brother was killed by a drunk driver in 1988. Then in 2006, her daughter, who was pregnant with twins, was killed by one.
