Who are the greatest living American songwriters?

Earlier this month, the New York Times and its music critics caused a bit of a dustup with its "30 Greatest Living American Songwriters" list. Tough assignment — and no list like that is going to make everyone happy. But the real drama happened in the responses: how the critics responded to criticism, and arguments for who should have been on that list. Musicians and writers — including Rick Beato, Ted Gioa, and Brad Meldau — jumped into the fray with their thoughts not just on the choices, but on how those choices are made (Did Billy Joel belong on the list? Or at least deserve a little more respect from the critics?). This hour, guest host Mona Seghatoleslami and local music experts talk about the art and the craft of songwriting. In studio:  Dave Chisholm, comic artist, writer and musician Anna Reguero, Ph.D., arts journalist, music scholar, and founding editor of Rochester Overture Rissa the Righter, musician and songwriter ---Connections is supported by listeners like you. 352 Analog on Purpose — How Terry Carleton Built a Career Too Busy to Market

The Unstarving Musician

What does it look like to build a recording career so busy you don't have time to market it — and do it entirely without computers? Terry Carleton returns to share what's happened in the two-plus years since his first appearance: a solo album seven years in the making, the completion of his work on the Vince Guaraldi Charlie Brown remix series, and a closer look at how his all-analog, DAW-less production approach actually works in practice — and where it's headed. Terry walks through the making of Ric Shah and the Sandcrabs (From Jupiter), including a title track written as a tribute to his late high school bandmate Mike Perlitch, and how he reconstructed lost guitar tracks recorded by Camel's Andy Latimer using AI audio separation tools — a process he discovered through a Rick Beato video on the making of the Beatles' "Now and Then." He also shares how collaboration works at this level: Andy Latimer, bassist Michael Manring, and Grammy-winning composer Michael Silversher all appear on the album, and Terry explains why that kind of participation has become more accessible in the past decade. Topics we cover include: The DAW-less, all-analog studio workflow — what it enables, what it costs, and what's changing Writing a tribute song in someone else's musical voice Using AI audio separation (Lalal.ai) to reconstruct lost session tracks How remote collaboration with high-caliber musicians has evolved The Vince Guaraldi Charlie Brown remix project — what came out and what's next Why constraints (no undo, no recall) can make a producer a better listener Visit UnstarvingMusician.com for show notes. Then they dig deep into the latest retro revival sweeping through the speaker industry: field coils. Are electromagnets better for inner detail than permanent magnets? What do they do to microdynamics? We report; you decide. And wrapping up the conversation for most listeners, they riff on the announcements of two radically different personal audio products: a $7500 “quad-brid” IEM from Campfire and an adorable little headphone amp and DAC from Fosi.

Prior to Napster and LimeWire, the music industry seemed to be a cash cow. Everyone wanted in. But in the world of streaming, artists are making literal pennies on the dollar. Some bands will need tens of thousands of listens and likes to make a paycheck. The music industry is broken, which is why Bruce Springsteen and the Red Hot Chili Peppers have cashed in their chips and sold their music catalogue.   In this solo episode of the Check Your Brain podcast, Tony Mazur analyzes the issues in modern music. He plays interviews from Rick Beato and Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan who said rock 'n' roll was systematically destroyed three decades ago, and the only way one makes it in the music industry is if they have rich parents subsidizing their kids' vanity project. He also touches on the ridiculous New York Times' list of 30 Greatest Living Songwriters, the unoriginality in modern music, and the phenomenon known as "Blue Dot Fever."   Be sure to subscribe to Tony's Patreon. $3 gets you just audio, $5 gets video AND audio, and $10 has all of the above, as well as bonus podcasts per week. We take a playful but pointed run at the “most overplayed song” ever with a live listener bracket that pits Free Bird, Don't Stop Believin', Sweet Caroline, Brown Eyed Girl, and more in a ruthless showdown. Along the way, we unpack what repetition really means, how stadium anthems, wedding playlists, and radio gold become rituals that comfort some of us and exhaust the rest. You'll leave with your hill to die on and a few hot takes from fellow fans to test your case. Before the sparks fly, we open with a rapid-fire look at Ella Langley, state champion dancer, voice-shifting surgery, a pellet gun for pests, bangs born from a bad haircut, and a one-pickle pre-show ritual that weirdly works. These Key Changes episodes feature people whose lives have been shaped by music: some who left it behind for something new; others who found their way to it later than expected. Together, they're the stories we return to when we want to show how reinvention really works, not as a clean break, but as a shift in rhythm, perspective, and purpose. Whether you're a longtime listener or just discovering the show, these episodes reflect the heart of the podcast: bold pivots, unexpected harmony, and second acts that still have plenty to say. Rick also has an incredible series of long-form, sit-down interviews with some of the most acclaimed music artists in the world, including Peter Frampton, Sting, Derek Trucks, Brian May, and a group interview with grunge legends Krist Novoselic, Kim Thayil and Jack Endino. But Rick didn't find success on YouTube until he was in his mid-50s, following the viral success of a video he posted of his 8-year-old son Dylan demonstrating his perfect pitch. In fact, he didn't even launch his channel until he was 54. Prior to his YouTube success, Rick taught music at the college level, he held private lessons (by his estimation, he taught more than 12,000 lessons), he was a music producer and engineer, and he even co-wrote the song "Carolina" by the band Parmalee, which hit #1 on the Billboard Country chart. Rick is also one of the only people in the world who isn't a rock star to have his own Gibson Artist Series Signature Les Paul Special guitars. In this episode, Rick shares his journey from childhood, when he first played the cello, to the classrooms of upstate New York, to his experience working in the music industry, to the incredible success he enjoys today as one of the world's most well-respected experts on "Everything Music." ******* If you enjoy Second Act Stories, please leave us a review here. On this episode I had the pleasure of chatting with JohnParadiso and Vince Verkay of the legendary funeral death doom band Evoken.  Celebrating over 33 years as one of theseminal bands in the genre, we had the opportunity to talk about the most recent release, Mendacium released last month on Profound Lore Records.    The interview took place on Halloween, so we begin with some stories about scaringtrick or treaters and the creative lengths Vince went to one year. We then move into concept of the new record.  I wasfortunate to get access to the promo and the limited-edition vinyl from the great Decibel magazine so I had the opportunity to spin the album a lot before talking to the guys.  My original plan was to deep dive into the lyrical themes on each track and the album, but Vince and John are very much in demand these days, so we only had about an hour totalk.   While the episode is considerably shorter than the two-part interview with Vince that Markisan and I completedearlier several months back. In some ways, this interview can be considered a companion to that one.  Specifically, wetalk about return to longtime producer and metal guitar god Ron Bumblefoot Thal.  Specifically, Ron was recentlyinterviewed on the wildly popular Rick Beato's YouTube channel.  In a remarkable surprise, Ron mentions Mendaciumand a humorous dialogue ensues over the meaning of “doom metal.”   We then talk about the new video for the album's second single “None,” it's an incredible piece of cinematic art crafted by Obsidian Studios.  Major props the killer performances by friends Joe the tattoo artist and Chloe Rose, who did a terrific job playing the central characters in the album's blasphemous tale of a dying Benedictine monk's inner turmoil and crisis of faith. We also dig deeper into None's music arrangement and the revelation of Vince Verkay's phenomenal debut vocal performance.  We learn that it was lead vocalist guitarist and song writer John who convincedVince to go for it!  John and Vince also talk about their collaborative approach he uses to bring Vince's lyrics tolife.  A little peak inside an musical process that began over 30 years ago!  I personally love Vice's harsh blackened throat on Mendacium and hope we get to hear him on future Evoken albums.  We also talk about Bumblefoot's multi-instrument appearance and arrangement wizardry on the mesmerizing and crushing instrumental Prime.  We then explore the ncomplex album opus Sext—a song where Bumblefoot's mix brought it all together—including what would becomekeyboardist Don Zaros's haunting intro—a move Don didn't know about until after the album recording sessions were finished. All in all, this fun chat, especially for me becauseMendacium has been on near constant rotation on my turntable for more than 2 months now.  I was really glad to give the guys their flowers for over three decades of releasing consistently amazing music.  Evoken is one of my all time myfavorite metal bands, their dedication to a scene before there was a scene, and the guy's devotion to their loyal fans.  Likeother more well-known underground death metal artists from the great New Jersey/New York scene of the early 90s—guys who I deeply admire like John McCantee from the legendary death metal titans Incantation-Vince and John are such down-to-earth guys and passionate artists. Even after 33 years this interview makes plain how devoted to their craft and grateful they remain.  I also recommend to anyone listening to pay the $30+ for the vinyl.  It's an exceptional package with cover artwork done by the artist Worthless and Summer Lacy's exceptional gatefold layout design. While I do stream metal, and don't buy vinyl like I used to, this record is 100% wax worthy!  So sit back and enjoy a Black habit Dark Ale brewed by the Benedictine Brewery beer—you guessed it—a brewery owned and operated by Benedictine monks of the Mount Angel Abbey in Mount Angel, Oregon. Enjoy!

Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 570 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - A mysterious fuzz appears and is this the worst gig of all time?  We start off with pangolin based connotations and it's honestly not going to get much more intelligent beyond this point. Brian on the other hand has gone back to his carpentry roots and is in pain as a result so perhaps he should join Blake in his new sauna. Richard saw some live music and has observations and has finally completed the Ultimate MIDI Course! The death of the legendary Brian Wilson had Richard taking a long needed deep dive into the Beach Boys and was very pleasantly surprised and somewhat blown away...Meanwhile our good friend Andy Wood was on the Rick Beato show and the guys all discuss how much they love this before a pick falls out of Richard's beard. Line 6 have just released a new modeler and the guys feign vague interest. Brian may or may not be about to play a gig in the nude and Richard has suggestions for avoiding injury and has been sent a mysterious fuzz. Brian has fallen in love with a vintage Marshall...Pulp, Mini horses, The days of innocence, Neighbor Tom, Back in Black...it's all in this week's Chasing Tone!We are on Patreon now too!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chasingtonepodcast)Awesome Courses, Merch and DIY mods:https://www.guitarpedalcourse.com/https://www.wamplerdiy.com/Youtube:https://www.youtube.com/@chasingtonepodcastAwesome Course, Merch and DIY mods:https://www.guitarpedalcourse.com/https://www.wamplerdiy.com/Find us at:https://www.wamplerpedals.com/https://www.instagram.com/WamplerPedals/https://www.facebook.com/groups/wamplerfanpage/Contact us at: podcast@wamplerpedals.comSupport the show

Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 568 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - In the court of the crimson Klon and everyone has a Tubescreamer, right? The band is back together as Brian returns to the recording studio and Richard has some ice cream tips for cannibals and a returning finger pain. He has a new pedal idea for a compact board and the guys tear him a new one...Meanwhile the Earthquaker story got on to the mainstream news and Blake uses a big word. Twice! There was big pedal news just before we recorded as pedal legend Bill Finnegan of Klon Centaur fame issued a legal statement via social media so the guys dig into it. This once again tuns into a new business idea that is legally questionable at best and then the guys develop the ultimate formula for podcast success. Brad Paisley had the Rick Beato treatment this week and Brian cannot hide his undying love for Brad and Vox style amps. Somehow the conversation jumps from Ai to pole dancing and there is much confusion and some hilarity. Weird Canadian potato chips, Wampcoin, Goop, Iron Maiden, Jarvis Cocker, The honk...it's all in this week's Chasing Tone!We are on Patreon now too!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chasingtonepodcast)Youtube:https://www.youtube.com/@chasingtonepodcastAwesome Course, Merch and DIY mods:https://www.guitarpedalcourse.com/https://www.wamplerdiy.com/Find us at:https://www.wamplerpedals.com/https://www.instagram.com/WamplerPedals/https://www.facebook.com/groups/wamplerfanpage/Contact us at: podcast@wamplerpedals.comSupport the show

Tiger Woods is dating Donald Trump Jr's ex-wife, Jessica Dupnack tells us about her creepers, Jim Morrison is alive, Michelle Obama's boring podcast, The Top 50 Solo Artists in rock history, Trump Tower protests, Maz checks in, and Jim's Picks: Best Opening Lines. The Xavier Worthy story gets even worse. The Kansas City Chief WR's finance has filed a protective order detailing his other alleged attacks. He's also firing back at what she did. We're just glad this domestic dispute is taking place in the court of public opinion. Michelle Obama's podcast is super entertaining...If you like to hear her go on and on about her parents. The YouTube comments are far more entertaining. Meghan Markle has a crappy new podcast coming out that sounds a lot like her old crappy podcast. REM reunites on stage with actor Michael Shannon's REM tribute band. Jim Morrison is still alive according to a new documentary. Some people are saying that Rick Beato might have jumped the shark due to his newest interview. Ultimate Classic Rock has put out a list of the Top 50 Solo Artists in rock history. A new Bonerline. Peter Wolf's new book spills on how Faye Dunaway made him a cuck. There's a new update on the student missing in Punta Cana. Justin Bieber breaks his silence by saying he's not good enough. Fox 2's Jessica Dupnack calls in to talk about all of the boners that attack her on social media. We call Maz back after he makes us wait 14 minutes. NFL Free agency is the biggest sports news of the week. Tom predicts where Aaron Rodgers will land. Tom takes a side in the Michigan vs MSU half court brawl. We have to let Maz go because some people have to be places after the show, apparently. Tiger Woods has a new piece in Donald Trump Jr's ex-wife Vanessa. There's a very strange twist in the Diddy case. CNN deleted the video of him beating Cassie and it will not be admitted into evidence. Luigi Mangione just received his largest single donation- $35k.. he's raised over $700k for his defense team. A Bayer executive was allegedly targeted with arson. Thanks a lot, Luigi! The new Canadian Prime-Minister elect, Mark Carney, allegedly loves Ghislaine Maxwell. Jim's List: The Top 10 Best Opening Lines in Rock. SNL 50 is star-studded, WATP's Karl brings us Bill Maher & Corey Feldman, DOGE divides and confuses, the Gabby Petito doc, a Boston deep-dive, and the exoneration of AIDS ‘patient zero'. Deadline Detroit lists us as a podcast you MUST listen to. Some people are saying we could have been mentioned a bit earlier… but we're not complaining. Is rock and roll dead or what? SNL 50 went down and it was full of great bits and celebrity cameos. Tom Hanks pissed a few people off. Ryan Reynolds was awkward. Local 4 dumped out of the show 13 minutes early. Adam Sandler killed it. The Digital Short kinda sucked. D.O.G.E. is dividing the country and makes zero sense to the layman. Another plane goes down… upside down. Britney Spears spent a romantic Valentine's Day with her deadbeat boyfriend, Paul Soliz. Mexico's Got Talent has a fart extraordinaire. Karl from WATP drops by to analyze the latest Club Random with Bill Maher, Corey Feldman's appearance on On with Mario Lopez and more. A major water break in Detroit wreaks havoc. There is a new Gabby Petito documentary on Netflix. Brian Laundrie's parents are the worst. RIP Brad Delp again. Drew did a deep dive on Boston. Is Anthony Kiedis uncancelable? Gaëtan Dugas was irresistible. Turns out he wasn't ‘patient zero'. Rick Beato is getting awesome interviews and killing it on YouTube. 60 Minutes is really bumming Drew out lately. Lorraine Lewis in on OnlyFans now! Even you can join and retire by 29. Bhad Bhabie vs Alabama Barker.
