This is the VIC 4 VETS, Honored Veteran, during Veterans Month in America. SUBMITTED BY: Miss Laura _____________________________________________________________ Hi! I'm submitting a Veteran for your show, my Uncle Richard. Richard R. BertoniThird Battalion, Tenth Marines, Second DivisionPFC1941-1944Bronze Star, Combat "V" Medal, , Purple Heart, and many others. My grandparents immigrated to America in 1921 from Genoa and Rapallo, Italy. In 1941 my uncle lied about his age and enlisted in the Marines. He was at Tarawa on the island of Saipan. He was shot seven times trying to carry out the radio operator after he was shot. My Nonna and Nonno were sent a black edged telegram that Uncle Richard had died heroically in battle. My Nonna said "My son is not dead. If he was I'd know." She enquired as to where he would be taken if he were wounded. They told her he would be in Hammond General Hospital in Modesto, California. The next day she got on the train and went there. When she got there she asked to see the men who were brought in that had no dog tags. She went down the row of beds of men who were unconscious and found him! She stayed with him until he was able to travel and brought him home. He met and married his wife and went on to have 6 children, even though one of his testicles was shot off! True story! As soon as he was able he began volunteering at the VA hospital. As he got older he grew a wonderful curly, white beard and volunteered as Santa for many years. He even led the St. Patrick's parade as lead leprechaun for years in Ypsilanti. Whenever we were with Uncle Richard he would take one or more of us to St. Thomas church and ask us to pray with him when he lit a candle for all the boys that didn't make it home, even the Japanese soldiers. He was loved by many and was generous with his time and money. A funny story: we happened to be visiting during a heat wave. He decided we were all going to the public pool to cool off. When we got there he put on a fedora, put the towels in a violin case, lit a cigar and walked in. He loved to joke around and he never met a stranger. I found him more than once on his back patio quietly crying. He would always say that he missed his buddies from the war and hoped he lived the miracle of life God gave him well. Just thought Vic might like knowing about another Italian that was an incredible Marine. I'm the daughter of an Air force Captain, the sister to a Navy Master Chief, the mother of a Marine, and the mother of another son in the Army. I also recently found out I had a distant relative who fought for the Union in the Civil War from Missouri. I've lived in St. Louis for 8 years and I've enjoyed your show! ________________________________________________________________ This is today’s VIC 4 VETS, Honored Veteran, during Veterans Month in America on NewsTalkSTL. When Rachel Blistein couldn't find hair products that worked for her curly texture, she took matters into her own hands. Mixing formulas in her kitchen, she launched Original Moxie. It’s a hair care company rooted in Ypsilanti, Michigan, focused on sustainability while celebrating diverse hair types. In addition to the non-toxic and environmentally friendly ingredients, Blisten decided to ditch the plastic containers. That was right before the COVID pandemic. She described her research into sustainable alternatives as "falling down a rabbit hole." “It was just really a personal desire to shift to a more sustainable solution. I wasn't thinking about increasing our profits,” Blisten said. “I was just hoping we'd break even, in the transition.” Listen to the interview to hear more about the ups and downs of growing a values-driven beauty brand rooted in Michigan. In this special family-themed episode we're delighted to welcome sisters Sue Nickels and Pat Holly, renowned figures in the quilting community. Both have dedicated more than four decades to the art of quilting, earning numerous accolades and inspiring countless enthusiasts worldwide.Pat Holly was born in Lafayette, Indiana, during her father's tenure as a flight instructor in the Korean War. Though the family relocated to Michigan when she was just six weeks old, Pat proudly embraces her Hoosier roots. She pursued biology at the University of Michigan and later worked as an electron microscope technician at the Ann Arbor VA Hospital. It was there she met her husband, a pathology resident. Following their marriage, Pat returned to the University of Michigan School of Art to study graphic design, weaving, and fabric design. Her fascination with textile creation and historical textiles from around the world continues to influence her quilting designs. Sue Nickels was born in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and spent most of her life in Ann Arbor. She attended Eastern Michigan University, majoring in Art. Sue married in 1976 and welcomed her first daughter in 1978. Inspired by her sister Pat's baby quilt gift, Sue embarked on her quilting journey by enrolling in a class at a local quilt shop, where only hand techniques were taught at the time. Over the years, she transitioned to machine quilting and has been teaching machine techniques for more than 30 years. Sue's dedication to quilting has earned her numerous awards, including the 1998 AQS Best of Show for "The Beatles Quilt," a collaboration with Pat.Beyond their collaborative projects, Sue and Pat have contributed significantly to the quilting community through teaching, writing, and sharing their expertise. Sue has authored several books and has developed her own rulers for machine quilting. Pat's work reflects her deep appreciation for historical textiles and her background in graphic design and weaving. (3:10) How did Pat and Sue learn to sew? Their mother of course! Hear the story of the genesis of their sewing/quilting careers. Were they good at sharing their only sewing machine? Hear about that right here! Oh, learn about the Troll doll cloths too!(6:00) What inspired each of them to transition from being sewists to quilters? Their grandmother and a special baby quilt!(9:14) Learn about the influences of Illinois Quilters Inc. and Jinny Beyer, Ruth McDowell, Harriet Hargrave and Gwen Marston.(11:27) Sue, learned to quilt from Harriet Hargrave's book “Heirloom Machine Quilting” with the help of Pat who had taken a workshop form Harriet in the Chicago area. This was in 1987 and other quilters in your area had not discovered machine quilting. Was it hard to make the transition to machine quilting?(15:43) Both Pat and Sue talk about the influence of Gwen Marston and the Beaver Island Quilt Retreat.(18:40)In the late 80”s Pat moved to Muskegon, MI and began the PALS (Patchers at the Lakeshore) Quilt Guild. Here she talks about this move and the genesis of this endearing group of quilters.(20:09) The sisters talk about what it's like to collaborate on their work…and what it's like to win awards together.(23:42) What moment or event stands out for Pat and Sue? Well…there are many and then there's the Beatles Quilt. And for Pat it was her miniature quilts.(26:53) Learn more about the Beatles Quilt of 1998 Best of Show. It's beginning and how they created it.(30:56) Both Sue and Pat are BERNINA Ambassadors. They talk about how they became a part of the first class of Ambassadors and why the program means so very much to them.(34:35) Pat and Sue talk about their special exhibit “The Two of Us” featured at Quilt Week at Paducah 2025. Learn about what's in the exhibit and how they'll be implementing QR codes. Also to be features will be the Beatles Quilt and Pat's miniatures.(38:37) Learn some never before shared secrets about this exhibit and Pat's miniatures!(42:03) Any future sewists or quilters in their family?(44:51) What's next for Pat and Sue and what are their dreams?!(45:54) What didn't I ask. Sue talks about when she taught at Harriet Hargrave's retreat, and when Gwen Marston asked Pat and Sue to take over Grew Marston's retreats and called them The Holly Girl's Retreats. Pat mentions that they are both amazed at what quilting has given them and the places it's taken them.(48:23) Do you want to reach out to Pat or Sue. This week on Kliq This, Kevin Nash returns from the road with stories you won't want to miss — including a run-in with the viral sensation Angry Grandma and a peek behind the curtain at Astro Comic-Con. What happens when you mix a wrestling legend, some Juggalos, and a weekend in Ypsilanti? Let's just say… it gets colorful. With WrestleMania right around the corner, Kev breaks down his upcoming trip to Las Vegas: WrestleCon, Hall of Fame, and a few private signings that might just make some headlines. But don't expect him in the legends box — and don't ask him to pretend he enjoys Vegas crowds. This is Big Sexy unfiltered, and he's got some thoughts. Of course, we can't talk Mania season without addressing the elephant in the ring: the assassination of John Cena. Is WWE mishandling their biggest crossover star? Did they just bury a potential dream match? Kevin has a strong take — and it might not be what you expect. From Bron Breakker spears to whether Cody Rhodes is actually a heel in disguise, this episode digs into WWE's hottest storylines — but through the lens only Nash can provide. We're also talking MyRise in WWE 2K25, what makes a good promo, and why scripted segments are slowly sucking the soul out of wrestling. And if you're wondering what happens when Nash sees someone so stunning he forgets his Red Stripe? Or why he still cringes at modern promos delivered like monologues at a community theater audition? You'll want to hear every word. Kliq This drops every Monday — don't be late to the party. “The priesthood is beautiful. Keep thinking about it. Keep praying about it. It's worth it.” Fr. Pieter vanRooyen, pastor at St. Joseph Parish in Ypsilanti and an assistant professor of theology at Sacred Heart Major Seminary, joins Men of the Hearts hosts Fr. Craig Giera and Fr. Drew Mabee to talk about his journey to the priesthood. Having been raised in a nominally Catholic household, it wasn't until he was in college at Michigan State University that Fr. Pieter first began thinking about the priesthood. He shares how his devout grandmother, a high school friend, and a campus Christian group influenced his growing faith and helped open his eyes to his priestly vocation.(0:27) Hosts Fr. Craig Giera and Fr. Drew Mabee introduce their guest this month, Fr. Pieter vanRooyen, pastor at St. Joseph Parish in Ypsilanti and an assistant professor of theology at Sacred Heart Major Seminary. He shares some recent blessings, like participating in Exodus 90 with the men of his parish. Fr. Drew shares his own experiences with Exodus 90. Our hosts and their guest then talk about Fr. Pieter's interest in motorcycles.(8:53) Fr. Craig, who serves as Director of Priestly Vocations for the Archdiocese of Detroit, talks about a recent dinner and evening prayer with Archbishop Vigneron, attended by more than 200 young men discerning the priesthood. Fr. Drew pauses to express gratitude for Archbishop Vigneron's years of ministry and slips in an invitation for Archbishop-designate Weisenburger to be a guest on the podcast after he's installed as Archbishop of Detroit on March 18. (10:22) Fr. Pieter begins sharing his vocation story. He grew up in a nominally Catholic household—he was baptized and received First Communion and Reconciliation, but attended Mass mostly on holidays and was not confirmed as a young teen. When he was in high school, his family moved closer to his devoutly Catholic grandmother, who taught him about the faith and arranged for him to be confirmed. (18:37) Fr. Pieter talks about breaking up with a steady girlfriend and feeling “crushed” by the loss, but ultimately asking himself whether he had “made an idol” of the relationship. He explores the difference between preparing for marriage and casually dating. Even married couples should look to God, not their spouse, as their ultimate source of satisfaction.(22:59) Fr. Pieter enrolled at Michigan State University in the fall of 2001 on a scholarship from the Air Force through ROTC. Within weeks of the semester starting, the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks occurred and Fr. Pieter considered dropping out and enlisting. After some thought, he decided to stay in school. He began attending Mass periodically with a suitemate as well as a Bible study. (30:26) Fr. Pieter recalls spending spring break in Panama City, Florida to attend a Campus Crusade for Christ conference, during which students were sent out “two-by-two” to share the Gospel with beach-goers. One fruit of this trip was Fr. Pieter began praying every day: “Jesus, I give this day to you.” He also began to seek answers about his Catholic faith and returned to Reconciliation for the first time since second grade.(42:12) During the summer before his sophomore year, Fr. Pieter lived with his grandmother in Chicago. It was during this time, while at Adoration with his grandmother, that he first asked God what he should do with his life. In response, the thought unexpectedly came into his head to be a priest. Fr. Pieter shares how he initially dismissed the thought but later told his grandmother, who helped connect him with a priest to explore the vocation.(54:07) After a few years of discernment and living in accordance with Church teachings, Fr. Pieter graduated from MSU and entered Sacred Heart Major Seminary in 2004. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Lansing six years later. The group spends some time talking about how a...

On today's episode, I talk to musician Fred Thomas. Originally from Ypsilanti, Michigan, Fred started playing music as a teenager, and in 1994 founded the math rock band Chore. The band broke up two years later, and he joined the brilliant His Name Is Alive, and in 1999 started the well-known indie rock band Saturday Looks Good to Me. They would release eight albums, mostly on Polyvinyl, before Fred retired the band in 2013. As a solo artist, Fred has been recording albums since 2002, and his 14th album Window in the Rhythm was just released on Polyvinyl, and it is fantastic! On today's episode, we sat down with Mara Cecelia Ostfeld, an associate research scientist and the research director at the University of Michigan's Center for Racial Justice at the Ford School of Public Policy. Mara helped us better recognize the attitudes of Michiganders across the Detroit Metro area relative to immigration. Ostfeld and other researchers focused their survey on Detroit, Flint, Grand Rapids, and Ypsilanti. Across those populations, residents were asked, "Do you think it should be easier or harder for foreigners to immigrate to the U.S. legally?" Then, Michigan Public's own Steve Carmody, in part inspired by Mara Cecelia Ostfeld's study, spoke to residents from other cities and counties including Van Buren County Sheriff Daniel Abbott. Abbott desires a President who will reduce the flow of immigrants moving in from the Southern border. In other areas, like sections of Detroit and Pontiac, some Black Republicans, like Pastor Lorenzo Sewell, maintain that "Young Black men are saying right now that they feel that people who are illegally coming into this country are getting treated better than they are.” Altogether, the topic of immigration looks to be a key factor in attracting voters in the upcoming election. Former President Trump and Vice President Harris each have a plan for solving what many identify as a problem with immigration. Those solutions tend toward mass deportation on the one hand and the creation of earned citizenship pathways on the other. AI Shownotes: In Episode 399 of "Mike Dell's World," host Mike Dell discusses a range of topics spanning personal updates, podcasting technology insights, and his experiences with new gadgets and flying. Starting with a personal update, Mike shares stories about his recent camping trip during the Labor Day weekend, his visit to the Michigan Flight Museum, and his recent sickness which he humorously calls "the plague." He reflects on the local security concerns he observed during a visit to Ypsilanti and the inconvenience of parking nightmares in Ann Arbor. Transitioning to podcast-related content, Mike introduces the new podcasting device he encountered at Podcast Movement in DC—the Audio Sigma PodMobile DSP. This device simplifies podcast recording with features like a noise gate and portability, working seamlessly with mobile platforms. He explains its advantages over other equipment such as the Rodecaster Pro, emphasizing its ease of use. Mike then delves into advanced podcast technologies and services, such as various podcast apps that support new features like live streaming notifications and interactive elements like "boostograms" linked to cryptocurrency. He praises the efforts of the Podcast Index for fostering innovation and moving podcasting away from being dominated by big companies. The conversation shifts to Mike's experiments with reducing smartphone dependency. He discusses using a Light Phone, a device designed to minimize distractions by stripping down smartphone functionalities to essentials like calls, texts, and basic apps. Mike evaluates its benefits in helping users focus more on real-life interactions. Lastly, Mike shares his enthusiasm for aviation, particularly his experiences flying an RV-12 IS sport plane, and contemplates building his own aircraft. He wraps up the episode by encouraging the audience to explore new podcasting technologies and reminisces about his past episodes and plans for future content. Throughout the episode, Mike maintains a casual tone, mixing technical discussions with personal anecdotes and reflections on life's simplicity and technological advancements in podcasting.

The Parkridge Community Center on Harriet Street opened in December 1945 as a recreation center for Southside residents. It was funded through a World War II program that built recreation centers for war workers and their families. But, the story of how the Parkridge Community Center came to be located on Harriet Street as a segregated facility for African American families has been mostly forgotten. In this podcast, historian Lee Azus recounts the struggle by residents of the Southside to build an interracial community center on what was called the "buffer strip" between white and black Ypsilanti near Michigan Avenue. Their story illustrates their vision and its limits as it came up against the power and the purse-strings of Federal bureaucracies and the Ypsilanti City Council. Mike Schultz, affectionately known as “Schultzy,” is the Owner of Schultz Outfitters Fly Shop & Guide Service, a hub for Southern Michigan angling, instruction, and destination travel. Growing up in Michigan, he developed a connection with the outdoors, which ultimately led him to pursue a career in the fly-fishing industry. Spending countless hours on the water each year, Schultzy has honed his expertise in Midwestern waters and beyond. While his primary focus remains on the warm-water fishing havens of Southern Michigan, his angling adventures have taken him to exotic locations around the world. Driven by a passion for conservation, Schultzy has played a pivotal role in founding annual fundraisers like the Huron River Single Fly and Huckin' for the Huron, in collaboration with the Huron River Watershed Council. These events support the preservation of Michigan's Blue-Ribbon Smallmouth stream, the Huron River. Outside of his angling pursuits, Schultzy resides in Dexter, Michigan, nestled along the banks of The Huron River with his wife, Allie, and their sons, Tanner and Dylan. With a commitment to sharing his passion for fishing and conservation, Schultzy continues to inspire anglers and outdoor enthusiasts alike—myself included. In this episode of Anchored, we discuss the process of opening his fly shop in Ypsilanti, tactics for catching smallmouth bass on the fly, the effects of water temperature, tackle, and more. January 11, 1984. Ypsilanti, Michigan. Two armed men enter a real estate and insurance office before one of them fires a shot into the neck of the 47-year old owner, Jack Brown. The assailants then lock the office's other employees inside the bathroom before fleeing the scene and Jack dies in the hospital several hours later. Prior to his death, Jack had hinted that he might be involved in something which led to him being murdered, but the two perpetrators are not identified and the motive for the crime remains unclear. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a baffling murder which resembled a professional hit and has remained unsolved for 40 years. In addition, we will also be discussing the unsolved murders of 54-year old Elizabeth Shumate, 60-year old Frances Ivey and 46-year old JoAnn Brown, a trio of real estate agents who were shot to death inside their office in Houston, Texas in August 1983.
