Federal health officials are warning of an increase in cases of a mysterious but polio-like condition affecting children up to 18 years of age. It affects the nervous system, specifically, an area of the spinal cord, causing muscle weakness and paralysis in the arms and legs. Sometimes these symptoms are temporary, sometimes they persist, and doctors don’t understand why or who is most at risk. A message from Teresa Rodríguez - “I hope you join me for this very special edition of Stories Beyond the Headlines….when the unfathomable becomes a blessing.”It was one year ago when Teresa first began her podcast, Stories Beyond the Headlines. And it was precisely the Las Vegas massacre that claimed 58 lives and injured dozens more, that became the topic of that first podcast episode. At the time, Teresa had interviewed a courageous concert-goer and security guard who helped rescue many from the chaotic music festival, as well as relatives of a young woman, Jovanna Calzadillas, who lay unconscious with a bullet lodged in her brain, fighting for her life in a Nevada hospital. One year later, Teresa shares with you her intimate conversation with that young lady and her husband, Frank. They both feel it’s a miracle she’s still alive. It’s July, and we’re in the midst of one of the hottest summers on record. It can get stressful, these days. So much is happening around the world. We might not agree on many issues. But there is one thing, it seems, that most of us agree on. It’s uplifting and delicious. It’s America’s favorite dessert…ice cream. Last year, $6.1-billion was spent on flavors ranging from cookies ‘n’ cream, moose tracks, chocolate chip cookie dough, chocolate and the number one favorite…vanilla. In July, 2011 a new ice ream shop joined the scene. Their artisanal ice cream features flavors like flan, passion fruit, sweet potato- ancho-chile-chocolate-chip and their legendary, Abuela Maria. Teresa will be talking to Suzy Batlle, founder of Azucar Ice Cream from their new Dallas location. Pat de la Rosa, Azucar’s general manager will be in our studio. Talk about female power.
