Interview by Kris PetersGrinspoon have flown the flag for Australian rock since bursting onto the scene after winning the Triple J Unearthed contest with the song Sickfest in 1995. They released their debut, self-titled EP that same year which included that song plus More Than You Are before unleashing their second EP Licker Bottle Cozy the following year, featuring Champion. In September 1997 Grinspoon released their debut album Guide To Better Living which became the staple sonic diet for disenfranchised youth everywhere with its punchy, aggressive punk/rock hybrid that was catchy as fuck and even more addictive. The band went from strength to strength from there, releasing a succession of successful albums such as Easy, New Detention and Thrills Kills & Sunday Pills, but it was on the live circuit that Grinspoon basked in glory. Their wild, unpredictable and entertaining live shows helped Grinspoon become a regular on pretty much every Australian music festival since 1995, with demand continuing to this day despite the fact their last album called Black Rabbits was released over a decade ago.But 2024 is set to become the Year Of Grinspoon following the release of their first new single in twelve years, Unknown Pretenders. The song is a direct throw back to the band's earlier stuff and has fans both old and new salivating at the prospect of their new album Whatever, Whatever which is slated for an August 9 release. But that's not all.Grinspoon have also announced an extensive 45-date national tour starting in September and finishing in December that will see the band hit capital cities and regional venues, including more than 20 all-ages shows.Guitarist Pat Davern joined HEAVY to talk about the exciting new developments in the Grinspoon camp, starting with the reception for Unknown Pretenders."I think it's been pretty good. Well, my Mum and Dad love it," he joked. "To be honest with you, things seem to be going really well. The tour went on sale and tickets are selling really fast, and in this climate, with the amount of bands out there that are touring, we're very happy about that. It was the first cab off the rank. We've probably got a couple more singles to go before we release the album, and I think it's been a great… return to form is a good way to describe Unknown Pretenders."Unknown Pretenders saw a relatively low-key release with little advance promotion. It was a simple, yet effective way of releasing the new single, but we question Davern as to why the band chose to release the track without a massive social media campaign."You're right. We didn't do any social media or any big build up to it," he agreed. "I think when we recorded the album, we weren't sure how it was all gonna play out. We wanted to do something that we're really proud of, and it had been twelve years since we recorded an album, and we didn't want it to be shit. And if it was shit, then we weren't gonna release it (laughs). So we thought it would be best to keep it on the quiet until we were really happy with the results. We got there, and we are really happy with the results. The fanfare starts now, on HEAVY mag!"Unknown Pretenders is definitely a return to form for Grinspoon, more closely resembling their early material than anything that has come since. We ask if that song was chosen as the first single to make a statement of sorts."It definitely was," Davern nodded. "It was kind of… for us to put out music after such a long time, we wanted it to be a statement. We wanted our old fans, and, I guess, our new fans - because we're almost a generational band now. A lot of people's kids are into it, where their parents were into the band when we first started. We wanted it to be something we could hang our hat on and say we're back."In the full interview, Pat discusses Unknown Pretenders in more detail, how the single kicks off a new era for Grinspoon, the upcoming album whatever, whatever and what to expect sonically, the writing process and how the final tracks were selected and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Grinspoon are back on the road and another reminder we are all getting old!! 24 years since the release of the album 'Easy' and 21 years of 'New Detention.' A great reason to re-release the albums, both on vinyl for the first time. The Easy Detention Tour will also kick off in October playing great venues across the country. The Grinners are always solid live: a huge show and huge pyro & confetti guns!! Pat talks about what is to come on the tour and how will the set list work when you have two albums in the mix - play them in full or play the best!? Interview by Kris PetersWhen Grinspoon burst onto the Australian music scene with the sensational debut album Guide To Better Living in the late 1990s the whole rock/punk landscape in this country changed forever. Here was a brash, outspoken, talented as fuck group of individuals who showed no respect for the conventional laws of music and were more than happy to break the rules whenever it suited them - which was often. That album was followed by Easy in 1999 and then New Detention in 2002, both of which were more accessible than the band's debut offering, but still with enough angst and attitude to captivate a youthful generation.Last year saw the 20th anniversary of New Detention so Grinspoon have decided to revisit both of those albums by releasing them for the first time on vinyl on September 8. It is testament to the enduring quality and legacy of both of those albums and what would a release be without a tour to promote it?Never ones to shy away from time on the road, Grinspoon have announced their Easy Detention National Tour which kicks off at the Miami Marketta on October 29.Joining them for the tour will be Private Function and Cupid & The Stupids, both young bands who obviously remind Grinspoon of themselves back when they first started.Guitarist Pat Davern sat down with HEAVY to chat about the tour and the vinyl releases, starting with just how much the band are looking forward to celebrating on the road."Yeah definitely," he smiled. "We did the Spring Loaded tour last year, which was a three year tour - it was 12 dates in between COVID and everything else that happened. As far as club shows go or our own dates it's been a long time. I think the Chemical Heart Tour - which was the end of 2021 I think - so, yeah, it has been quite a long time. Once again we're kind of doing a retrospective of Easy, which was our second album, much loved by fans but not so much by critics, and then New Detention which was obviously our biggest selling record and our crossover into more commercial radio after coming from the Triple J scene of the 90s."The tour is also celebrating the release of both albums on vinyl, which Davern admits was not as simple as you might think."It's amazing that it takes 20 years to get a record out on vinyl," he laughed. "Who would have thought? It's funny. Easy was recorded a bit of an old fashion way with two inch tape, straight from the desk and it actually transpired onto vinyl very well - like it was made for it. We really set that album up to have an A side and a B side and on vinyl sounds amazing. With New Detention, which was the first ever record that we recorded with pro tools, took a bit of work getting there but it's sounding great. Me and Phil had a bit of a listening session in a hotel in Sydney a couple of weeks ago and had a real deep dive into the sound and we're really happy. All the secret tracks turned up - not in the same places as they were. On Easy the secret track was six minutes and sixty seconds after the last track - geniuses we were back then (laughs) - but it comes straight in now. So, yeah, you get a bit of extra stuff on the vinyl as well and obviously the gatefolds are really great. The artwork is the original artwork from New Detention and the Easy one's great. I think there's a giant used ashtray as the centrefold, just to get everyone into that 90s feel (laughs)."In the full interview Pat reveals what the setlist could look like, goes through both albums in more detail, picks his favourite, extra pressure after the success of Guide To Better Living, how tempting it was to rehash that album for the follow up, why Grinspoon didn't go as hard on those two albums as the first, the band's enduring popularity, possible new music and more.

On November 29, 1981, Wood died under mysterious circumstances at age 43 during the making of Brainstorm. She had been on a weekend boat trip to Santa Catalina Island on board her husband Robert Wagner's 58-foot (18 m) motoryacht Splendour. Other than the fact that she drowned, many of the circumstances are unknown; for example, it has never been determined how she entered the water. Wood was with Wagner, Brainstorm co-star Christopher Walken, and Splendour's captain Dennis Davern on the evening of November 28.[b] Authorities recovered her body at 8 a.m. on November 29, one mile (1.6 km) away from the boat, with a small Valiant-brand inflatable dinghy beached nearby. Wagner said that she was not with him when he went to bed.[79] The autopsy report revealed that she had bruises on her body and arms, as well as an abrasion on her left cheek, but no indication as to how or when the injuries occurred.[5] Davern had previously stated that Wood and Wagner argued that evening, which Wagner denied at the time. In his memoir Pieces of My Heart, Wagner admitted that he had an argument with Wood before she disappeared.[5] The autopsy found that Wood's blood alcohol content was 0.14% and that there were traces of a motion-sickness pill and a painkiller in her bloodstream, both of which increase the effects of alcohol.[80] Los Angeles County coroner Thomas Noguchi ruled the cause of her death to be accidental drowning and hypothermia.[81] According to Noguchi, Wood had been drinking and she may have slipped while trying to re-board the dinghy.[5][82] Her sister Lana expressed doubts, alleging that Wood could not swim and had been "terrified" of water all her life, and that she would never have left the yacht on her own by dinghy.[83] Two witnesses who were on a nearby boat stated that they had heard a woman scream for help during the night.[84]Wood was buried in Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles. Representatives of international media, photographers, and members of the public tried to attend her funeral, but all were required to remain outside the cemetery walls. Among the celebrities were Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor, Fred Astaire, Rock Hudson, David Niven, Gregory Peck, Gene Kelly, Elia Kazan, and Laurence Olivier.[85] Olivier flew in from London in order to attend the service.[86]The case was reopened in November 2011 after Davern publicly stated that he had lied to police during the initial investigation and that Wood and Wagner had an argument that evening. He alleged that Wood had been flirting with Walken, that Wagner was jealous and enraged, and that Wagner had prevented Davern from turning on the search lights and notifying authorities after Wood's disappearance. Davern alleged that Wagner was responsible for her death.[5][87][88][89] Walken hired a lawyer, co-operated with the investigation, and was not considered a suspect by authorities.[90]In 2012, Los Angeles County Chief Coroner Lakshmanan Sathyavagiswaran amended Wood's death certificate and changed the cause of death from accidental drowning to "drowning and other undetermined factors".[91] The amended document included a statement that it is "not clearly established" how Wood ended up in the water. Detectives instructed the coroner's office not to discuss or comment on the case.[91] On January 14, 2013, the Los Angeles County coroner's office offered a 10-page addendum to Wood's autopsy report. The addendum stated that Wood might have sustained some of the bruises on her body before she went into the water, but that this could not be definitively determined.[92] Forensic pathologist Michael Hunter speculated that Wood was particularly susceptible to bruising because she had taken the drug Synthroid.[93] In 2020, a medical doctor and former intern of Noguchi at the time of Wood's death stated that the bruises were substantial and fitting for someone thrown out of a boat. He claimed that he made those observations to Noguchi.[94]In February 2018, Wagner was named a person of interest by the police in the investigation. The police stated that they know that Wagner was the last person to be with Wood before she disappeared.[95][96][97] In a 2018 report, the Los Angeles Times cited the coroner's report from 2013 saying that Wood had unexplained fresh bruising on her right forearm, left wrist, and right knee, a scratch on her neck, and a superficial scrape on her forehead. Officials said that it is possible that she was assaulted before she drowned.[98]

Goodbye Natalie, Goodbye Splendour is the long‑awaited, detailed account of events that led to the mysterious death of Hollywood legend Natalie Wood off the coast of Catalina Island on November 28, 1981. It is a story told by a haunted witness to that fateful evening: Dennis Davern, the young captain of Splendour, the yacht belonging to Wood and husband Robert Wagner. Davern initially backed up Wagner’s version of that evening’s events through a signed statement prepared by attorneys. But Davern’s guilt over failing Natalie tormented him. Davern reached out to his old friend Marti Rulli, and little by little, at his own emotional pace, he revealed the details of his years in Wood’s employ, of the fateful weekend that Natalie died, and of the events following her death that prevented him from telling the whole story—until now.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Lana Wood is an American actress and film producer. She played Sandy Webber on the TV series Peyton Place and Plenty O'Toole in the James Bond film Diamonds Are Forever. Her sister was film star Natalie Wood. Her sister, Natalie Wood, had left her first husband, Robert Wagner, after a marital betrayal, Lana says she told her. But Natalie decided, in 1972, to go back to him — because “sometimes the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t.”Nine years later, Natalie would die under suspicious circumstances. Her body was found floating off Catalina Island in California near a boat on which she, Mr. Wagner and Christopher Walken had spent the evening. Also on board was the skipper, Dennis Davern. At the time, Ms. Wood’s death was ruled an accident and the case was closed. But in 2011, the investigation was reopened by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department after Mr. Davern said he heard Ms. Wood and Mr. Wagner arguing earlier in the evening. After re-evaluating the case details, the coroner changed the cause of Ms. Wood’s death to “drowning and other undetermined factors.” Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. The festival season is kicking back in, with several large scale shows already being announced for next year.Among them is Scene & Heard, set down for February 21 in Newcastle, a festival made up of some of last centuries most popular - and still relevant - acts. One of which is Grinspoon, the festival headliners and voice of the downtrodden youth since the release of Guide To Better Living in 1997, an album which to this day still serves as an unofficial anthem for those who like to live life moderately outside of conventional parameters.Guitarist Pat Davern sat down with HEAVY during the week to discuss the show and more."After the year that we've just had it's hard not to get excited," he laughed when asked about the performance. "Let's hear it for 2021!"With so many classic Australian bands on the lineup - including Regurgitator, COG, Frenzal Rhomb, Ratcat, Killing Heidi, Caligula and Custard, Davern has likely toured and/or played with all of them at one stage of Grinspoon's existence but it would be nice to know which of them is the most fun."Frenzal Rhomb are always good ones to tour with," he replied without hesitation. "We've toured with a lot of those guys, especially in the States in the '90s with the Warped Tour and things like that. The whole line-up looks pretty good but we've always been big fans of Regurgitator and what they do so we'll be looking forward to seeing those guys. I think it's just great there's no internationals because there can't be! It's a huge, open market for Australian music next year which will be awesome for the festival scene and the music scene in general."In the full interview, Pat talks more about Scene & Heard, runs us through a bit of nostalgic history about Grinspoon, talks potential new music, discusses the legacy of Guide To Better Living and more.

The Irish General Kieran Davern joins us this week, to discuss how he built the room at SBG Tullamore. Why his love of competition is as fierce as it is. Irish mentality; its roots and its effects and how he constantly tries to better himself.
Robert Wagner, Natalie Wood and her latest co-star, actor Christopher Walken, are moored off the shore of California's Catalina Island on the yacht, Splendour. But envy-stricken Wagner's behavior grows erratic — so much so a "petrified" Natalie begs the ship's captain, Dennis Davern, to take her ashore in a dinghy. Once there, she confides her plans to leave her husband Wagner and desperately flee by way of a sea plane. But her efforts to secure a plane are stymied. Instead, she and Davern return to the yacht — and Natalie's final day of life commences back on board.
With his wife, Natalie Wood, dead, Robert J. Wagner desperately tries to control the public narrative of what happened aboard the death yacht, The Splendour, lawyering up and coaching his boat skipper Dennis Davern on what would become his official version of events. Now, in a stunning first person account, Davern opens up about those bizarre and sinister days immediately following the tragedy — dramatically explaining how Wagner held him hostage in his estate with the help of bodyguards and a complex system of magnetic door locks.
Albie is joined by Professors Ian Gow and Michael Davern, who discuss the changing nature of accounting education and work, the need for agility and flexibility, and what business might look like in this new world in which we we find ourselves.
Derek talks to Kieran about his beginnings in MMA, BJJ, going pro, Polaris, Ireland's Fittest Family, a competitive nature, ego, tackling his own lows, opening his gym, social media and surfing!

The Winning Edge! Panel Discussion With the Masters Host Laura Reeves moderates a Friday Night Forum Panel Discussion on the topic of the “Winning Edge” with Judges Rick Gschwender and Pluis Davern and Professional Handler Bill McFadden. It is not the judge’s job to find a “diamond in the rough,” Reeves posits. “Polish your “gem stone” for your best chance of success.” Good habits Gschwender starts the discussion by asking the audience about their habits with the dogs they exhibit. “How many of you train your dog? Road work him? Take video to see what the judge sees? Clean their teeth?” Gschwender queried. “I see people all the time, they’re paying $30 to enter the dog and haven’t even cleaned teeth.” Gschwender adds, “Watch the judges. If you pay attention, you will see consistency in what they put up. You might not like it, but you will figure out what I like and come back and show that to me.” Motivated by motion Davern noted, in a fascinating observation, that people are *predators.* Which means “we are motivated by motion. What are judges looking at?” Davern asked rhetorically. “Motion. It catches the eye. You can *subtly* move your hand to show a pretty head, for example. “You’re in the ring, you’re all showing the same “product.” There’s 20 boxes of cornflakes. What makes yours better than the others?” Owner handlers have a huge advantage, Davern said. They are spending time with the dog they love. “This is a great sport! Nobody takes a golf club to bed at night,” Davern said. “Life is not all about winning.” Be prepared “Take a deep breath and don’t rush,” McFadden advises. He also notes that in some cases, owner handlers who are long time breeders are “experts showing to novices.” Judges are life-long learners and may be new to a breed. “Present your breed the way it should be shown.” Most importantly, McFadden said, be prepared. “Make sure your dog is in condition, physically, mentally, emotionally.” “You’ll have successes and failures you deserve and ones you don’t. It happens to handlers too. We show 20 dogs and might win with two,” McFadden added. Actress Natalie Wood was considered Hollywood royalty. She was nominated for three Academy Awards before the age of 25. On the night of November 29,1981, Natalie disappeared into the waters off Catalina Island. She had been staying on her yacht, “Splendour” with husband Robert Wagner, actor Christopher Walken and Dennis Davern, caretaker of the yacht. Davern claims a violent argument erupted between Wood and Wagner in their stateroom. Her body was found in the water hours later. The coroner’s report, cause of death by drowning, was recently amended to include “drowning and other undetermined factors.” Teresa’s guest Marti Rulli co-author of “Goodbye Natalie, Goodbye Splendour” a book she co-wrote with Davern, will join Teresa on this intriguing episode of Stories Beyond the Headlines.Host: Teresa RodríguezShowrunner: Carmen LucasEditor: Andy StermerLinks:https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/video/natalie-woods-yacht-captain-dennis-davern-speaks-megyn-kelly-today-1147187https://www.drphil.com/videos/yacht-captain-claims-he-witnessed-argument-hours-before-natalie-woods-death/https://www.firstcoastnews.com/article/news/local/friend-of-captain-re-counts-the-night-natalie-wood-died/77-513986944Revolver Podcasts would like to thank author Marti Rulli.Click below to Subscribe on:Apple Podcasts: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/teresa-rodriguez-stories-beyond-the-headlines/id1294144122Google Play Music: https://play.google.com/music/listen?u=0#/ps/Iximr5uqwege67iw77vl4h5n3uqSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2aUY1JSXldLbsG0MppTp0fiHeart Radio App: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/teresa-rodriguez-stories-beyond-the-headlines-28549674/

Coach Davern Williams is a fan favorite from the Netflix documentary, Last Chance U. The first two seasons were in Scooba, a small town in Mississippi where one of the most dominating Junior College Football programs was built. At EMCC, Coach Williams worked with the defensive line. You'll hear about his experience while he was there, what his struggles were, what the biggest blessings were and what it was like working with the cameras in their faces all the time. You'll also learn about his experience as a player and coach at other schools. It's a great discussion and a great opportunity to learn from what of the best coaches to do it. I can't wait to see where he goes from here on out. Our bodies are always organizing towards health, even when that doesn't seem to be so. The inherent wisdom that lies within the wiring of our physicality is one that zealously pursues the path of healing. I don't believe there are limits to the level of health we can achieve in these amazing vehicles called bodies and I do believe that a foundational piece of our success is determined by the food we eat. Every time we make a food choice, whether that be for ourselves, our families or our children, that choice has a direct effect on health levels. If we fill our bodies with or prepare foods that are not of the highest vibration we make our bodies work that much harder on its path to healing. Overtime it's pursuit to health will be slowed as it reprioritizes healing to stave off illness and disease to its best ability. Our guest today is on the front lines of the pathway to health and she's dealing directly with the future of our world. Dr. Monica Davern is a Resident Pediatrician at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland in the Bay Area. She is a living example of health for her patients as she is an active triathlete, despite her demanding work schedule, and she is 100% plant-based. She sees the effects of poor nutrition every day and educates her patients and their parents on how to heal so many of the common issues in our youth today. Chronic abdominal pain, asthma, obesity, and constipation to name a few, all have deep routes in nutrition. Monica has a skill of connecting with people and sharing her message of health by finding out what's important to them. She meets her patients where they are at and lends a guiding hand to empower them to make simple changes that lead have a great impact not just on the children but the entire family unit. She has seen this first hand with her husband, Jesse and soon to be Ironman who once had to abort a couch shopping mission because sitting down and getting up left him in a sea of pain and inflammation. Monica feels that going plant-based together has strengthened them as a couple. Monica serendipitously walked into our lives at Ironman Santa Rosa 70.3 earlier this year and it was an instant friendship. We are so honored to share her wisdom and experience with you guys today. Today's Guest: Marti Rulli, author, Goodbye Natalie, Goodbye Splendour, Dennis Davern, captain, Natalie Wood, Robert Wagner yacht Order 'Goodbye Natalie, Goodbye Splendour' by Marti Rulli and Dennis Davern by clicking the book cover above! What happened to Natalie Wood on the night of November 29, 1981? The next morning, as we all know, she was discovered floating in the waters off Catalina Island. But what happened during the night before she died? That night, Natalie was aboard the Splendour, the boat she and her husband, actor Robert Wagner, owned. Also on board was actor Christopher Walken and the ship's captain, Dennis Davern. Wagner and Davern were drunk. None of the three men has talked in detail about the events of that evening. Until now. DENNIS DAVERN podcast excerpt: "As soon as we departed Marina Del Rey, Robert Wagner had jealousy written all over him. Tension was building and it was just terrible... All of a sudden Robert picks up a wine bottle and smashed it in the middle of a coffee table. Glass shattered all over everyone. Christopher Walken exited to his stateroom. Natalie went up to her stateroom. I went to the bridge. You could hear the arguing, the screaming. It was torture." It's not Wagner or Walken that's talking, however. The ship's captain, Davern, has broken his silence in a new book written with his long time friend, Marti Rulli. Goodbye Natalie, Goodbye Splendour is his story, his recollection of that horrible night and the 28 years of silence and guilt that have engulfed his life ever since. In the interest of full disclosure, before we start, I need to tell you that I first heard about this book through my sister, who lives in the same small South Jersey community as Marti Rulli and has done business with her. Join Dr. Carlos as he explores the death of Natalie Wood with Marti Rulli. Goodbye Natalie, Goodbye Splendour is the long-awaited, detailed account of events that led to the mysterious death of Hollywood legend Natalie Wood off the coast of Catalina Island on November 28, 1981. It is a story told by a haunted witness to that fateful evening: Dennis Davern, the young captain of Splendour, the yacht belonging to Wood and husband Robert Wagner. Davern initially backed up Wagner's version of that evening's events through a signed statement prepared by attorneys. But Davern's guilt over failing Natalie tormented him. Davern reached out to his old friend Marti Rulli, and little by little, at his own emotional pace, he revealed the details of his years in Wood's employ, of the fateful weekend that Natalie died, and of the events following her death that prevented him from telling the whole story-until now.Marti Rulli has been a lifelong resident of New Jersey. For thirty-five years, she has been employed in executive positions for newspaper corporations, commercial printing companies, and magazines. She runs her own advertising business and has been a freelance writer since 1972.
