Rising Voices of Fundraising: The AFP Emerging Leaders Podcast
In this episode of Rising Voices of Fundraising: The Emerging Leaders Podcast, our 2025 Outstanding Young Professional award recipients share the strategies that led to amazing fundraising results, as well as the personal career moves they've made that have set them up for success. Their advice serves as a blueprint for emerging leaders unsure of how to take their career to the next level. Abby and Brian will be honored at AFP ICON 2025 in Seattle, April 27-29. Guests: Brian Marquez, development officer at the Southern Scholarship Foundation: Starting as a development coordinator at Elder Care Services (ECS) in Tallahassee, Brian introduced initiatives such as a quarterly impact report that highlighted to donors the valuable role their contributions played in creating positive change at the senior service agency. These stewardship-focused efforts resulted in increased donor retention, including inspiring one donor to triple their gift from the previous year. As a queer Latino, Brian's leadership at ECS extended beyond fundraising. While chair of ECS's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, Brian launched an effort to translate materials into Spanish, and secured SAGE certification for ECS, ensuring the organization was a welcoming and affirming space for LGBTQ+ seniors. While the industry as a whole continues to struggle to retain and recruit new donors, Brian is defying trends with a focus on meaningful donor engagement that has contributed to a 5% increase in retention, a 7% increase in first-time donors, and a 17% increase in monthly donors. His use of automated, segmented campaigns celebrating donor milestones and personalized welcome campaigns for new donors reflect Brian's ability to embrace new technology in fostering relationships. Beyond his professional achievements, Brian has made a profound impact as a volunteer and advocate. As president of the AFP FL, Big Bend Chapter, he has significantly increased attendance and engagement by fostering collaborations with local nonprofit leaders. Additionally, he is deeply committed to advancing LGBTQ+ equality, serving on the board of Equality Florida and contributing to policy initiatives through the City of Tallahassee Mayor's LGBTQ+ Advisory Council. Abby Trahan, MPA, CFRE, development officer II, at the University of Houston: In her first professional role as annual giving coordinator for the Houston Food Bank, Abby grew the monthly giving program by 60%, generating $3 million in dependable annual revenue with a remarkable 96% donor retention rate. Beyond the numbers, she created a culture of gratitude and stewardship through innovations such as a new tool for tracking donor touchpoints and a cross-departmental letter writing day to personally thank donors. In her successive roles as development officer I and II for the University of Houston, Abby has significantly expanded the organization's capacity to attract and retain major donors, resulting in multiple six-figure gifts, including a $1 million commitment, as well as the University of Houston Law Center's first endowed professorship during the current dean's tenure. Her talents extend beyond major gifts, also facilitating a peer-to-peer campaign that raised $113,000—the highest in four years. As an active member of AFP since 2018, Abby has demonstrated her leadership at the chapter level, serving as communications chair for National Philanthropy Day and mentoring emerging professionals through the Greater Houston Chapter's Collegiate Chapters program. Abby also earned her Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) credential just three years after joining the profession, showcasing her commitment to her future career in fundraising. Hosts: Emily Leitzinger, CFRE, CNP, Director of National Leadership Giving, Cure SMA: Emily Leitzinger is a fundraising executive with over 15 years of experience driving organizational growth and sustainability through innovative fundraising strategies and donor engagement. She currently serves as the Director of National Leadership Giving at Cure SMA and is particularly proud of launching the first-ever Legacy Society for the organization. Emily is dedicated to advancing equity and inclusion in philanthropy, as noted in her Master's capstone. In this project, she examines the effects of donor influence on nonprofit operations and proposes frameworks for more balanced and ethical donor engagement. A chartering member and past president of the Mid-City, New Orleans Rotary Club, Emily is affectionately known as the Deputy Governor of "Yes" and is set to become the District Governor of District 6840. In addition to her professional achievements, she enjoys traveling, long-distance running, and craft beer, and is a huge fan of The Office. She lives in New Orleans with her Elvis-impersonating husband, Mike. Dr. Allison Quintanilla Plattsmier, CFRE, ACNP, GPC, CAP, Founder & CEO, AQP Consulting & Executive Director, ENP: Dr. Allison Quintanilla Plattsmier has fourteen years of experience in the nonprofit sector and has collectively raised approximately $5 million for over 75 organizations. She serves as Executive Director of ENP and runs her own nonprofit consulting firm, AQP Consulting, where she helps grassroots nonprofits with fundraising strategy, strategic planning, board development, and grant writing. Allison is a vocal advocate for gender parity, closing the wage gap, and ending the motherhood penalty. With accolades such as AFP's Outstanding Young Fundraising Professional, NBJ's 40 Under 40, NBJ's Women of Influence, a National Latino Leader, and the Women Who Rock Nashville Social Justice Award, Dr. Quintanilla Plattsmier strives to serve and better her community every day. A dedicated AFP member for the last seven years, Allison currently chairs the Women's Impact Initiative (WII) Mentorship Program and serves on the LEAD Education Advisory Committee. Donald Trump is back. In January, he will asend to office again after running a very anti-"woke" campaign often scapegoating transgender Americans. Hundreds of horrible homophobic and transphobic bills passed in state houses may work their way to the federal level. And then there is Project 2025. Today we talk to two of our friends who have their fingers on the pulse of LGBTQ activism to find out the path forward for very concerned queer citizens: Brandon Wolf and Christopher Kane. Brandon is the National Press Secretary and Senior Director of Political Communications for the Human Rights Campaign. He is a nationally-recognized gun safety and LGBTQ civil rights advocate, author and dynamic public speaker. He has served as the Press Secretary for Equality Florida, the state's LGBTQ civil rights organization. Brandon also co-founded the Dru Project, a nonprofit organization that works to empower youth and provide future leaders in the LGBTQ community funding for higher education. Christopher is the White House correspondent for The Washington Blade. Also having reported for the LA Blade, Chris is a longtime Washington DC-based reporter covering the White House, having previously covered the Justice Department and Federal Trade Commission's investigations of major mergers and acquisitions - along with antitrust policy development by federal agencies and US Congress, high stakes "bet-the-company" litigation, and certain activities by the FDA and US Patent and Trademark Office.

Delve into the fierce debate over abortion rights in the U.S. and how recent measures could alter the course of reproductive freedom. This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate Thank you for your continued support!Description: The 2022 Supreme Court ruling to overturn Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health dramatically changed the political scene. Still, just two years on, we are witnessing another watershed moment in the struggle for abortion rights. This Election Day, 10 states will vote on whether to enshrine abortion rights in their state constitution. Since 2022, every ballot measure to protect abortion rights has passed while every measure to restrict or weaken those rights has failed. Meanwhile, extremist Republicans are pushing for a total national abortion ban and seem to have Trump on their side. He told Fox News just days ago that a national abortion ban is “off the table,” but “we'll see what happens.” Joining us to share what's at stake and what can be done are Nadine Smith, the director of Equality Florida who heads the state's largest organization dedicated to ending discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Heidi L. Sieck is a Political Strategist & Founder of VOTEPROCHOICE that focuses on reproductive freedom at the state and local levels. And Renee Bracey Sherman, a reproductive justice advocate is the co-author of the just-released book, “LIBERATING ABORTION: Claiming Our History, Sharing Our Stories, and Building the Reproductive Future We Deserve.” Together they unpack how abortion, access to trans health, contraception and freedom from sterilization abuse are all part of the far Right's agenda to control bodies. Could reproductive rights leap forward in 2024, not back? Plus a commentary from Laura.“. . . Just last month we had the Gender Liberation March in DC . . . We had a tent for banned books because as they're banning sex ed, as they're banning trans youth healthcare, trans healthcare and abortion, they're also banning books . . . It's the same people. Ramon Lopez has a close look at one such case in Sarasota. Then: The arrival of three "medical freedom" activists last year on the elected board of the public hospital in Sarasota caught the attention of the Washington Post and New York Times. This November, four of the nine board seats will be up for grabs. Florence Fahringer presents the crowded field of candidates. Next: The worst bill so far for LGBTQ Floridians apparently won't pass muster in the state senate. Meanwhile, activists with Equality Florida staged a lively protest in Tallahassee. Finally: There will be teacher protests in Florida this week, and New College will figure prominently in those. Our news team has the details.
Several bills filed in the Florida Legislature for the 2024 session would impact LGBTQ+ Floridians; we get reaction from Equality Florida.

Shari began her career as a community organizer and public health educator, from outreach to conducting HIV/AIDS testing and counseling, to program manager for the Congressional Black Caucus-funded (CBC) Medical Education Initiative, a multi-year pilot study and direct intervention to fight healthcare disparities and remove barriers to HIV/AIDS treatment. As a fellow for Equality Florida, she supported city and county lobbying efforts for workplace non-discrimination protection ordinances and statewide education and mobilization for marriage equality. Shari has directed, produced and performed in original and scripted work at Magnet Theater (NYC); Dixon Place w/ Rubbish Comedy Collective (NYC); Tiny Cupboard (Brooklyn); QED (Queens); Upright Citizens Brigade (NYC), and at venues across NYC and beyond. L.J. challenges listeners: ‘within each of our roles in society, we have the power and opportunity to take risks' and to ‘look at yourself, determine your privileges, and go do something different.' As a proud, queer, and trans high school student in Jacksonville, FL, L.J. Valenzuela started advocating by joining Equality Florida's Youth Leadership Council and some local LGBTQ+ groups in his area. Since then, he has spoken at conferences, including the All Together Now Conference, the Association for Middle-Level Education Conference, and a statewide back-to-school mental health webinar earlier this year. Currently, he is a Field and Advocacy fellow with Equality Florida. He is also working within his community to produce an LGBTQ+ play, Hunger, by Ashlyn Colwell, with the playwright within the upcoming months. From these experiences and his journey, L.J. has committed to professionally supporting his community, planning to incorporate activism into his chosen career through an interdisciplinary approach. He likewise urges everyone to find their power and use it to support the queer community and other marginalized groups through their unique ways.In his free time, L.J. is also an avid theatre kid, animated film enthusiast, and LEGO set builder! You can reach him at @ljvalenzuela37 on Instagram or ljvalenzuela31@gmail.com via email.L.J. clarifies his comments: ‘I've become aware that the “red list” for the Thespys program may have been formed for copyright purposes instead of content purposes, though this is unclear. I know we cannot bring anything on the “red list” to the District competition. That said, from my experience, theatrical productions in Florida's schools are still being censored. As a student, I cannot take certain pieces to competition due to their content, and our in-school endeavors must also follow new curriculum laws. I have spoken to my teacher about this, and a main takeaway from official meetings is that many policies have not been fully clarified, so it is difficult to implement them without taking the “safe” censorship route, including censoring LGBTQ+ topics. Therefore, I hesitate to provide a definitive description of the “red list.” However, it should also be remembered that different districts may be handling the situation differently.'

Folks, Florida is on the front lines right now. There are huge safety concerns brought on by the cruel laws, restrictions, rhetoric, and policies of Ron DeSantis and his friends that are affecting many people. Because of this, Equality Florida, along with the NAACP and the League of United Latin American Citizens, have all issued travel advisories for the State of Florida. I wanted to find out more and am thrilled to introduce you to Brandon Wolf, the Press Secretary of Equality Florida. In April 2023, Brandon's organization, Equality Florida warned against traveling to the state of Florida for folks in the LGBTQ+ community saying it could be risky and potentially unsafe. The warning says: “Taken in their totality, Florida's slate of laws and policies targeting basic freedoms and rights pose a serious risk to the health and safety of those traveling to the state.” The League of United Latin American Citizens issued its own warning, saying bluntly: “Traveling to Florida is dangerous.” The advisory goes on to say travel in Florida “can be unsafe for people of color, individuals who speak with an accent, and international travelers,” and people in those groups could face “a heightened risk of harassment, possible detainment, and potential family separation based on racial profiling.” From the New York Times: The NAACP became the latest to issue a travel advisory to the Sunshine State, warning that Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis's “aggressive attempts to erase Black history and to restrict diversity, equity, and inclusion programs in Florida schools” have turned the state into an openly hostile place for people of color and members of the LGBTQ+ community. Before traveling to Florida, please understand that the state of Florida devalues and marginalizes the contributions of, and the challenges faced by African Americans and other communities of color.” Donation link: Equality Florida Website Equality Florida is on social media everywhere: @equalityFL Brandon's Book is available NOW! On this episode Nadia Addesi and Micheline Maalouf speak to Brandon Wolf a nationally-recognized gun safety and LGBTQ civil rights advocate and dynamic public speaker. He currently serves as the Press Secretary for Equality Florida, the state's LGBTQ civil rights organization. On June 12, life changed for Brandon. He crouched in a bathroom while a gunman opened fire at Orlando's Pulse Nightclub, killing his best friends, Drew Leinonen & Juan Guerrero, and 47 others. Rather than be swallowed by the anger and fear of tragedy, Brandon set out to honor the victims' legacies with action. Brandon chats with us about: His story on that tragic night of the Pulse shooting and what kept him going How he has turned his heartbreak into advocacy The importance of community care for our mental health He clarifies and breaks down Florida's infamous "Don't Say Gay" bill He breaks down other laws that impact book bans, gender-affirming care, gun safety, and gender-affirming care and how they can impact everyone, not just the LGBTQ+ community and not just Floridians. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mindfully-healing/support

After months of anticipation, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis officially announced his 2024 presidential campaign from Miami, Florida on Wednesday evening. The state has become a hotbed for political controversy with the NAACP, Equality Florida, and the League of United Latin American Citizens all issuing travel advisories for the state, alleging to their members that the state's conservative policies showed the state "has become hostile" for minorities. Republican Mayor of Miami Francis Suarez believes this advisory is nothing more than a political stunt. Mayor Suarez joins the Rundown and shares his opinions on Governor DeSantis' 2024 campaign and discusses why he is still weighing whether or not he will join the GOP primary race as well. Despite two more candidates announcing their campaigns this week, former President Trump remains the front-runner Republican candidate in the polls. The Republican leadership has been focused on expanding their voter base ahead of the 2024 election in hopes that they can gain control of the House, Senate, and White House in the coming years. FOX News Sunday host Shannon Bream joins the podcast to discuss how former President Trump may navigate his GOP front-runner status as more candidates continue to join the field, what main policy issues will broaden the tent for Republican voters, and the latest on Supreme Court news and debt ceiling negotiations. Plus, commentary by Fox & Friends co-host and host of The Brian Kilmeade Show, Brian Kilmeade. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Long before drag was a mainstay of reality television, LGBTQ+ folks turned to drag for fun, to challenge society and explore their gender through an artistic, comedic and performative lens.Sadly, we recently lost two fierce drag legends who meant a lot not just to us, but the world.Heartbreaking. In March, JoJo Baby died from cancer at the age of 51.An early guest of our podcast, JoJo was a beloved Chicago nightclub personality and entertainer who dazzled patrons with their outlandish looks and puppetry. And just last week, Heklina, who shaped the modern drag scene in San Francisco with their wildly popular and irreverent Trannyshack shows at the club STUD was found dead at the age of 55 in her London hotel by her dear friend Peaches Christ.Today we remember two queer culture legends, Chicago's JoJo Baby and San Francisco's Heklina, who both died this past month and the impact they had on so many people's lives, including ours.Plus-➤ Everybody's daddy Pedro Pascal plays a gay cowboy in Pedro Almodóvar's Western Short ‘Strange Way of Life.'➤ Billy Porter is set to play novelist, activist and essayist James Baldwin.➤ Equality Florida issues an advisory warning for LGBTQ+ travelers.Episode #3074
