Scott Cooper of Saltillo joined the army when he was twenty-four years old. In this episode, he remembers flying to Kuwait for additional training before being deployed in Iraq. While serving in Afghanistan, American soldiers were routinely targeted by snipers and improvised explosive devices. Cooper recalls how they would alter their route each day to avoid the IEDs. Many soldiers who served in Iraq and Afghanistan experienced some form of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Scott Cooper compares his symptoms of PTSD with those of his friends. Veterans of the Global War on Terror are still dealing with emotional, physical, and financial challenges. Luke Adamson enlisted into the Australian Army in 2007 as a Combat Engineer. He was posted to the 1st Combat Engineer Regiment in Darwin and was deployed on multiple operations in East Timor, Sumatra and Afghanistan. In Afghanistan, Luke experienced a life changing incident which left him pulseless and ultimately led to his medical separation from defence in 2014. With his passion still burning for defence, Luke founded the Heroes on the Homefront Veterans Charity in 2016. To this day, Luke's charity helps connect veterans to events and people in order to sustain mateship and loyalty once leaving defence. Here are just a few examples of how Veterans contribute even after military separation: * There are roughly 21.2 million vets (military.com 2016) and of those 2.4 million are business owners and entrepreneurs. This means 1 in 10 veterans is a business owner. Also, veteran owned businesses employ 5.8 million Americans. * Post WWII almost 50% of veterans separated from the military came home to start up their own business venture. As of 2016, that numbers has DRASTICALLY decreased to just 5.6%. There are many factors leading up to this such as; * G.I. Bill funds - during the WWII era and for a short time after, veterans could use their G.I. Bill as low interest business loans for startups. That has since been changed to only include college education. * Draft vs Volunteer - during the draft all men from different backgrounds and walks of life fought next to one another and "networked" with one another building unbreakable relationships along the way.
