If you work with (or just adore) canine partners, don't miss this conversation with veterinary behaviorist Dr. Simone Sidel and researcher Jaci Gandenberger from the University of Denver's Institute for Human–Animal Connection (IHAC). We dig into their new open-access paper, “Recognizing and Mitigating Canine Stress in Human–Canine Interaction Research,” and the big idea behind it: centering dog welfare so studies treat dogs as true participants—with consent cues, low-stress handling, and ethical protocols—rather than research tools. You'll come away with practical ways to spot and reduce stress, design kinder sessions, and still produce rigorous science that benefits both species. No support and a lot of stress. That's how some clients of K9 Search Medical Detection feel after getting disability assistance dogs from the Manawatu trainer. As previously revealed by Checkpoint, it was last year stripped of its right to train such dogs, which have access rights to public places. But the dogs it certified before are allowed to keep their assistance status. While some clients feel abandoned, there is also support for the organisation's work. Jimmy Ellingham reports.

Here we go, two epic worlds collide as we speak to Pat and Jas. Both former special ops personnel, discharged due to injuries and come together to bounce off one another over their love for (and obsession with) training assistance and attack dogs. When we think of assistance dogs, most of us think of guide dogs. I was beyond fascinated to hear about how mental health assistance dogs are trained and very much fascinated by hearing about 'bite dogs' which is Pat's area of expertise as he trains military and police canines. Over the last 22 years, the organization has helped veterans, people with disabilities, and children and adolescents with physical, neurological, psychiatric, and/or emotional disabilities in 22 states, with placement nationwide. Kyria was a 2010 Glamour Magazine Woman of the Year finalist; the winner of the 2011 IKEA Life Improvement contest; the winner of WILMA Magazine's Women to Watch in 2014; the National Points of Light award in 2015; and the 2017 Coastal Entrepreneur Award – Non-profit in 2017. She is the Program Director and Instructor of the University of North Carolina Wilmington Assistance Dog Training Minor, the first and only comprehensive Assistance Dog academic certificate program at a state university. She has also served as an adjunct faculty member of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry.
