In just a few weeks, Santa will be back. The lights are up, the sales have started, and the elves are on the shelves--and hanging from light fixtures, dangling from curtains and zip lining across living rooms around the world. And Santa will soon be here. But not before we all prepare to receive a very different kind of holiday visitor. Yes, Santa is back. But so is the coronavirus. And it's new and improved in the form of the omicron variant.  Throughout this pandemic and our war against the virus, Independent Americans has continued to bring you doses of information to help you defend against the virus. And against the stupid. To help you stay vigilant. Because vigilance is the price of democracy. And it's also the price of a happy holiday.  And after multiple doses of good information and light to contrast the heat, we're back with a booster shot of the Righteous Media 5 Is, to empower and prepare you, right before the holidays hit. It's a jab in the arm of independence, integrity, information, inspiration and impact.  And just like Buddy the Elf is back delivering laughs, one of our favorite doctors is back on the pod to deliver the booster shot of content you need this winter.  Dr. Vin Gupta (@VinGuptaMD) is a public health physician, an Air Force officer, a professor, an NBC News analyst, and true voice of reason. He is a helper and a patriot. He's the guy you wish was your personal doctor right now. He joined the show back in Episode 83 in late 2020 to help you prepare for the hardest fall and winter any of us has ever faced. And he's back now to give us the real prognosis--on the new omicron coronavirus variant, whether or not you should get the shot (if you haven't already), the booster, and why it's been so damn hard to vaccinate the American military.  It's a quick, focused, no-shit booster shot of an episode that will leave you better informed and ready for the holidays--and whatever comes next. If you're a concerned citizen who cares about the future of America, this is your pod. This Thanksgiving, Independent Americans is bringing you a special holiday treat of new content. Paul has a few things to say (he always does) and then introduces you to the powerful and inspiring new podcast from Righteous Media: The Firefighters Podcast with Rob Serra, FDNY (Ret.). We're extremely excited about this new show and we think you will be too.  Welcome to the first ever episode of the Firefighters Podcast with Rob Serra, FDNY (Ret.). It's the hottest podcast in America, literally. Hosted by frequent and beloved Independent Americans guest, Rob Serra, this episode hits the ground running and doesn't look back. It's one of the best from this Season 1 that kicked off earlier this fall on 9/11. It features 9/11 hero firefighter Rich “The Nav” Naviasky. Over a 20 year career at the FDNY, he saw some shit. The kind of shit that sticks with you. From the chaotic morning of 9/11, to the deadly 2007 Deutsche Bank fire that killed two firefighters and injured more than 100, to the horrific 2017 Halloween terrorist truck attack that killed 8 people and slammed into a school bus, Rich has been on the scene at some of the most harrowing fire calls of the last two decades. He'll take you inside the hardest days, he'll share heartbreakingly graphic detail, and show you the magnitude of the decisions required of these incredible men and women. He will also leave you inspired by his fortitude, his heart and his example of selfless service. It's perfect for your holiday drive, flight or downtime.  Content Warning: This episode contains graphic content.  Host Rob Serra (@SerraRob) is America's leading advocate for firefighters and first-responders. A renowned activist, technical expert and father of three, Rob was born and raised in Staten Island, NY. He began his firefighting career with the FDNY in July 2001 just six weeks after graduating from college. And his first day in the field was September 11th. While he was not scheduled to work that Tuesday, he, along with thousands of others, reported to the World Trade Center to help with the aftermath of the attacks. The 20th anniversary of 9/11 was a time for reflection, a time for remembering. Never forget isn't just a hashtag. And if you're a regular listener of Independent Americans, one of America's Firefighters, a first responder, the family or a friend of one, or just interested in the real world of firefighters, this is your new home.  And that home has a little special sauce this episode. Rob's mother-in-law makes Nanny's Tomato Basil Pasta. It's a delicious dish that will feed your family... or a hungry firehouse and leave everyone happy.  Are you a firefighter that has a great story to share? Send it to us at info@righteous.us and be sure to visit thefirefighters.us for videos, Firefighters merch and more great content. We're bringing the power of the Righteous Media 5 I's: Independence, Integrity, Information, Inspiration and impact. Now is still a time to stay vigilant. Especially when it comes to national security. Ukraine says that Russia has amassed 100,000 troops near their border. Along with tanks, armored personnel vehicles and artillery. NATO has issued a warning. America has issued a warning. And Russia is denying they plan to invade Ukraine. War is very possible.  And you were probably focused instead on Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers lying about being vaccinated. Or maybe, understandably, you were focused on getting your kid a COVID shot or getting yourself a booster. But while you and most of America are focused on all that, the Secretary of Defense, and many others tasked with protecting America have their eyes on Russia. They always have their eyes on Russia. And on North Korea. And on Pakistan. And on China. And on five other countries across the globe. Because of one simple reason: they have nukes.  Nine countries in the world possess nuclear weapons capable of destroying the entire globe. And one of them is Russia. And maybe you forgot about that completely until you read this.  Nuke are THE number one threat to the entire world as we know it. Yeah, pandemics can be globe-killers. And of course, climate change is stripping and burning the world bit by bit. But only nukes could destroy the entire world as we know it in a matter of hours. And THAT is worth your focus. And your attention. And your vigilance.  And it's the focus of the newest episode of the groundbreaking television mini-series on Vice TV, While The Rest of Us Die. Our host, Paul Rieckhoff, is Consulting Producer and a Contributor. And he and Righteous Media are bringing you this powerful, urgent Season #2 of the series every Thursday this month at 10PM. Produced by Efran Films, Showrunner Anthony Lappé, and narrated by our friend and past guest on this show, Jeffrey Wright, the series is tearing into the scariest, most deadly, most urgent issues facing us all. And in the newest episode, we're talking nukes. And it features one of the best minds in the world on the issue--and our guest in this pod--Joe Cirincione (@Cirincione). Joe has worked on nuclear weapons policy in Washington for more than 35 years and is one of the top experts in the field. He was the Director for Non-Proliferation at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and author of Deadly Arsenals: Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Threats, and co-author of Universal Compliance: A Strategy for Nuclear Security. He was the president of Ploughshares Fund, a global security foundation. And now teaches at the Georgetown University Graduate School of Foreign Service. He's one of America's best known weapons experts, appearing frequently in print and on FOX News, MSNBC, CNN, ABC, NBC, PBS, NPR and occasionally on Comedy Central. Senator Max Cleland was a true American hero. One of the finest, most selfless leaders of our time. He was a titan. And his tremendous impact was second only to his huge heart. Even in these last few difficult months before he died, he was a fighter—and a happy warrior. And Max's passing comes the week of Veterans Day. Max defined what it means to be an American veteran. And what it means for veterans to continue to serve after they take off the uniform. And after tragedy. He's the godfather of modern veterans affairs and advocacy--and he's forever stronger at the broken places.  In this Veterans Day special episode, our host and Army veteran Paul Rieckhoff reflects on the life and legacy of his friend, mentor and personal hero, Max Cleland. And in order to even begin to properly tell Max's story, we hear from a man who knew him better than almost anyone else. Another hero, another mentor, another Vietnam veteran, another son of the south, another true American hero: Shad Meshad. Shad has known Max for over 45 years. And in this time of mourning, and reflection, and especially this Veterans Day, he is the person we most need to hear from.  They call him the Mad Man. For more than five decades, National Veterans Foundation Founder and President Shad Meshad has been one of the most important veterans advocates in the world. He is a therapist for Veterans and an advocate for Veterans' rights. After getting his master's degree in psychiatric social work from Florida State University, he enlisted in the army in 1970 and served as a counselor for U.S. soldiers in Vietnam. That was years before we knew this was really a thing. He'll tell you more about that, the Max Cleland most people never knew, and all the lessons we can all learn from Max's amazing life. This Election Day was just the latest painful reminder of how badly the two major parties are failing the American people. But it also underscored the growing importance (and number) of independents in America. And Rieckhoff is digging into all of it--from Virginia to New Jersey, and from Joe Manchin to Andrew Yang and his new “Forward” party. And 11 months ago, a group of traitors, fools and domestic terrorists tried to capture and kill the Speaker of the House and the Vice President and sack our Capitol. They threw crap on the walls, rejected the results of a fair election, and tried to overthrow our government. And somehow, this isn't the top news story on every news channel. But our guest in this episode has been staying vigilant in covering it more than any other journalist in America. He's the best kind of Independent American. One who seeks the truth, fights for justice and demands that attention be paid. NBC investigative reporter and one-man January 6th truth-telling machine, Scott McFarlane (@MacFarlaneNews). MacFarlane is the guy with the most important Twitter feed and news reporting on what's happening to hold people accountable after Jan 6th. How many suspects have been arrested? How many are still at large? What's the status of the person who tried to plant pipe bombs at the Republican and Democratic party headquarters on Jan 6. How many are in jail right now? Why are they being allowed to go to Mexico and Steelers Football games? How high is the justice department going? When will we finally see an Oath Keeper tried? What's coming next? Scott breaks it all down. He's the premier reporter covering with tremendous focus the single most important story in America. Everyone who has seen a Halloween movie knows you can't run from Michael Myers. The only way to defeat the terror of Michael Myers is to fight him--to take him head on. And the same is true about the horror show that is Afghanistan. If you run from the truth, it will chase you down, it will drag you down, it will cut you into little pieces, and it will come for your friends, and just keep coming. Like Michael Myers, the truth doesn't die.  And the fight for it around Afghanistan won't die either. Even if President Biden and countless partisan apologists and hacks look to defend themselves, rather than face the truth. Especially now, as they see Afghanistan continues to spiral downward, and pivotable Congressional midterms creep closer and closer---like Freddy Krueger, waiting for you to fall asleep.  But there are people who are embracing the truth. Heroes that understand the truth. That have a unique link to the truth. That comprehend it's origins, it's history, it's motivations, it's trajectory. Like Jamie Lee Curtis had a mental bond with Michael Myer, there are leaders that know the truth is coming---even when others won't believe it's real. Sometimes, because it's just too scary.  Heroes like our guest in this episode. Like Jamie Lee Curtis in Halloween, he's back! A man who can stand up to the scary, the brutal, the terrifying. Our friend, humanitarian, activist, superhero: Matt Zeller (@MattCZeller). Matt is America's leading voice on the issue of American allies in Afghanistan. He's an Combat veteran and Army major that made it out of Afghanistan alive only because of the courage of his Afghan interpreter. And he's been paying it forward ever since. The courageous Co-Founder of No One Left Behind, Truman National Security Fellow author of Watches Without Time: An American Soldier in Afghanistan, and the newest member of the powerhouse team at Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA). Since he was last on this show for Episode 127 in August, Matt's spent every day sounding the alarm about what's coming, demanding action from the White house, rushing allies out of certain death, and serving as America's conscience to ourselves and the world. He's been on countless TV and radio shows around the world, and he's somehow, still standing, still fighting. And he's back. To tell us what's really happening right now in Afghanistan--and why it's the ultimate Halloween horror story. He'll take us inside the White House spin, and the good things that HAVE happened. And take us behind the scenes on the Army bases around the country that are tasked with housing and resettling the thousands of Afghans that did make it out. HBO's Succession is a global phenomenon. And a reflection and exploration of our tumultuous times. And Arian Moayed (@ArianMoayed) is in the center of all of it. At its core, Succession is about a fight for the soul of a company. A civil war pitting family member against family. And about a fight for the future. Fall is here, the leaves are changing, Halloween is just a few weeks away, it's been 10 months since domestic terrorists tried to overthrow our government, and now is still a time to stay vigilant. Because while the world was focused on William Shatner and his trip to space, and on Jon Gruden's inexcusable words that got him fired as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, or on Dave Chappelle's new Netflix special, or on the major league baseball playoffs, there was a critical hearing happening in Washington about some of the most dangerous threats to that line that keeps America safe. It was a hearing that some didn't want to happen. They didn't think it was important. They didn't think it was urgent. They didn't think it was necessary.  But it was.  At 10AM on Oct 13, 2021, 10 months after domestic terrorists attacked our Capitol, the House Committee on Veterans Affairs held a hearing entitled, "Domestic Violent Extremist Groups and the Recruitment of Veterans." Most Americans didn't watch it. But it was damn important. And in this episode, we'll dig into why.  It's up to all of us to stay vigilant. Because vigilance is the price of democracy. And one man paying that price is our guest in this episode. Milo Ventimiglia (@MiloVentimiglia) is an actor, director and producer. And one of the hottest stars in America. He's also a really nice, hard-working and fascinating guy. And a guy with very strong opinions about everything from Afghanistan, to Senator Joe Manchin's obstructionism, to a strike in Hollywood by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) union. Milo is a fighter who stands up for what he believes in--not just in the roles he plays--but also in real life. And this is Milo the fighter as candid as you'll ever hear him.  After early recognition for roles with Sylverstor Stallone in Rocky Balboa, on Gilmore Girls and the NBC series Heroes, Milo went on to star as Jack Pearson in the massively popular NBC drama, This Is Us. Now, the humble son of a Vietnam vet is a household name. He has received three Emmy nominations and won a Screen Actors Guild Award. But over a decade before that, Ventimiglia toured Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan with the USO in support of US troops. And he's done it multiple times since.  Now, he's using his star power to help veterans and to stand with working people. He's supported veterans charities, and for the last month, has been making phone calls to US Senators to help a generation of men and women who've served since 9/11 create a Global War on Terror Memorial on The National Mall in Washington.  Milo's been a friend of our host, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff), for many years. They've worked together on issues, appeared together on political talk shows, and spent late nights hanging out in Hollywood getting pancakes. Milo shares the inside scoop on what's to come on This Is Us, he'll take us behind a red carpet with Nicole Kidman, and he'll talk about creating a super action hero movie with past Independent Americans guests like, Bradley Whitford, Jeffrey Wright, Wes Chatham, Jon Bernthal, Jane Horton and Henry Rollins. At this precarious time in American history, art and politics are merging and colliding in powerful ways. He's deeply involved in politics--and in causes he cares about. From climate change, to standing up for IATSE (the union that represents workers in film and television), Bradley's a guy who cares deeply, and is not afraid to throw a punch. He's earned three Emmys, been a figure in our film, TV and stage universe for a generation, and appeared in classics ranging from Adventures in Babysitting to Billy Madison to Scent of a Women to Revenge of the Nerds 2. After joining us way back in Episode 27 (one of our top episodes ever), the iconic actor and activist is back.  This is a fun, wide-ranging and candid episode. This is Bradley Whitford and Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) chopping it up on all kinds of issues. Bradley takes you on set in Toronto and inside the Emmy Awards. It's an insider's look at Hollywood and politics at the highest levels. And another powerful conversation that's about more than just politics, news and culture. And she is a returning guest and audience favorite. She first appeared on this show in May 2019 and is back to break it down.  Raised in Baghdad, Iraq, Zainab grew up as a small girl calling Saddam Hussein her uncle. 132. Admiral Mike Mullen. The Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs on The Next 9/11, Gen. Milley's Call to China, the Afghanistan Debacle. The Sept 18 Threat to Washington. Lessons Learned, Taking Accountability for Failure & Lady Gaga's Giant Egg.

The 20th anniversary of 9/11 has now passed. Afghanistan remains a mess. The delta variant is ripping through thousands of unvaccinated lives. And there is new, looming domestic terrorism threat facing our Capitol this week.  It's all a painful reminder that our fun, vaccinated summer of 2021 is almost over. Fall is coming in fast. And it's definitely a time to stay vigilant. There have been 46 Presidents of the United States. There have been only 20 Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. And you're about to hear from the best one of our lifetime.  Mike Mullen is a man who might have made a hell of a president. Mostly, because he never wanted to be one. But he's also a man who almost became a candidate for Vice President of the United States. And not as a Republican or a Democrat, but as an independent.  Independent Americans is continuing our unique, independent focus on the most urgent threats facing America. And exploring how they're all intertwined. And how we can pull them part--and fight them together. From 9/11, to the pandemic, to January 6th, to the debacle in Afghanistan, to the threats of domestic extremism--they're all a test of the fabric of our nation. And they all are made worse by how badly that fabric has been weakened since 9/11.  Is 2021 America what Osama Bin Laden would have dreamed of? 650,000 Americans dead, our international reputation in shambles, our politics paralyzed, our people divided, and literally, killing each other.  Just like 20 years ago this week, we have a choice to make. Do we stand with America and a brighter future? Or do we stand with the enemies, and the darkness that will extinguish the bright glow of the shining city on the hill?  It's another conversation that keeps it real. With tough lessons--and hard truths. The kind to help you stay vigilant. Because eternal vigilance is the price of freedom.  We're bringing the Righteous Media 5 I's: independence, integrity, information, inspiration and impact. We're going from last episode with the truth from a firefighter who stood on the pile, to this episode with the truth from the admiral, The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of staff, who was the senior military leader in the Situation Room, standing behind President Obama, watching the Bin Laden raid unfold on May 1, 2011. Admiral Mullen has been America's bodyguard. He was also the boss of every single man and woman in uniform who died in Iraq and Afghanistan. Welcome to a fireside chat with a true guardian of our democracy. An exploration of leadership--with a true patriot. A sailor, an Admiral, a warrior, a scholar...and maybe most importantly of all now, a grandfather. Our host, national security and political analyst and Army veteran Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) takes you behind the scenes for candid conversations with top leaders from all backgrounds. Never forget is the mantra of 9/11. It was on bumper stickers, repeated by Presidents, and hashtagged for two decades now. Twenty years later, has America forgotten?  Have we forgotten the lessons of 9/11? Have we forgotten what happened that day? Have we forgotten all that happened after? Have we forgotten about the public officials who said the air was clear at Ground Zero, the islamophobic attacks that happened across america, the rapid passage of the Patriot Act, the people snatched off streets and sent to GitMo without trail, the push for an invasion without a declaration of war, the rapid passage of the Authorization for Use of Military Force that allowed the unchecked expansion of Presidential power and the authority to conduct a forever war? Have we forgotten the unity? Have we forgotten the humanity? Have we forgotten the lessons?  From the bitter divisions around COVID, to the Capitol attack on January 6th, to the betrayal of Afghanistan, to the thousand of 9/11 first responders and survivors left alone to die from health impacts without help to this day...20 years after 9/11, it often feels like we've forgotten. And many in power, would like to keep it that way.  But as keepers of the 9/11 flame, our First-Responder host, Paul Rieckhoff, and his heroic guest consider it their responsibility to try to make sure America never forgets.  Host Rob Serra (@SerraRob) is a leader who can never forget. For over 10 years, he's been one of America's leading advocates for firefighters and first-responders. Rob was born and raised in Staten Island, NY and his first day in the field was September 11th. Along with thousands of others, he reported to the World Trade Center to help with the aftermath of the attacks. And now he's the host of his own groundbreaking new podcast, powered by Righteous Media, called The Firefighters Podcast with Rob Serra, FDNY (Ret.). It's the hottest podcast in America, literally. The show will feature interviews with firefighters and first responders, celebrities, and the always popular and delicious Firehouse cooking segment. Everybody loves firefighters. Now they have a podcast! And Rob is joining us exclusively to share more.  Our host, national security and political analyst and Army veteran Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) first hosted Rob on this show way back in Episode #2--over two years ago. And this new conversation with Rob is as moving and as real as it gets. Parts of it are hard to hear, but you shouldn't turn away. After 20 years, all US troops are now out of Afghanistan. Is that a good thing? Is the war really over? What happens now to our Afghan allies left behind? Will there be any accountability for failure in Washington? After gripping episodes with Matt Zeller, Jane Horton and Kristen Rouse, the newest episode is keeping our focus squarely on Afghanistan. The military pieces, media coverage, political spin, humanitarian need, the human story--we're digging into all of what is happening right now. Our guest has been there. He's a leader for this moment. He just returned from a controversial, unauthorized visit to Afghanistan made alongside fellow veteran and Democrat Congressman Seth Moulton. And he'll take us inside what he saw.  Representative Peter Meijer is a freshman Republican Congressman who succeeded Republican maverick Justin Amash, in the seat representing Michigan's 3rd district. He's fighting for Afghans, he's fighting partisanship, he's fighting his own party, and he's fighting for real change.  After high school, Peter enlisted in the Army reserves and deployed to Iraq with an intelligence unit. After returning, Peter joined Team Rubicon, a veteran-based disaster response organization led by Episode 107 Guest Jake Wood where Peter led humanitarian efforts focused on South Sudan's refugee crisis. He also led operations in New York after Superstorm Sandy, Oklahoma after a series of tornadoes, and the Philippines after Super Typhoon Yolanda. Peter then accepted a job with a non-governmental organization in Afghanistan. He ran the NGO's advisory operations in southern Afghanistan, managing a team to help aid workers provide relief to Afghan people. He later served as acting Deputy Director for Afghanistan, delivering emergency assistance to aid workers after kidnappings and targeted killings. Peter knows Afghanistan, knows national security, knows humanitarian work. And he knows this moment. And you need to hear what he knows. He's fighting for Afghan allies, for accountability around failures of the last month, and for his fellow veterans. He is also fighting with his own party. He was one of only 10 Republicans in the House to vote for the impeachment of Donald Trump. And he's fighting now to repeal the AUMF (Authorization for Use of Military Force), for the truth inside what happened on the January 6th insurrection--and for the soul of the Republican party.   Our host, national security and political analyst and Army veteran Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) has known Peter for over a decade. He digs deep with Pete and breaks down the latest news from a truly independent viewpoint. It's a bold and blunt perspective you won't find anywhere else on the media landscape. As America emerges from the pandemic and summer begins, we're sharing some of the best from our archives. Former NBA star and current Twitter megastar Rex Chapman joined Paul at the height of the pandemic on August 6, 2020 in Episode 66. If you've never heard this episode, you're in for a treat. And if you're a long time listener, you'll enjoy hearing this gem again.  From August 6, 2020: Former NBA star (@RexChapman) has quickly become one of the single most popular and beloved figures on Twitter. Rex was a basketball superstar. He took the Kentucky Wildcats to the Sweet 16. And played for the USA national team in the Pan-AM games.  He was an NBA lottery pick, going #8 overall in the 1988 draft. He electrified America in the dunk competition, and played for 12 seasons for the Charlotte Hornets, Washington Bullets, Miami Heat and Phoenix Suns. Always a fan favorite, Rex once dropped 39 points on Michael Jordan. But injuries eventually drove him out of the game. And into addiction. After his playing days ended, Rex fell into gambling and the deepest depths of opioid addiction. He fell hard--and he fell in public. And it almost killed him. But Rex Chapman has always been a fighter. And he fought back. He got help. He got support. And he started a new life after opioids, helping others where he could.  Especially on Twitter--where his account has become a daily visit for millions. From friends of this pod like Ambassador Susan Rice, Ron Perlman, Stephanie Ruhle and Jeffrey Wright, to Booger McFarland and Martina Navratilova, to LTC Alexander Vindman, to Megyn Kelly, to Trevor Noah, to McHammer, to Congressman Justin Amash and Congresswoman AOC--they all follow Rex. And he's not just posting videos. He's calling BS. He's putting out good information. And he's making an impact.  Be a part of the solution. Sebastian Junger is one of the most important authors, thinkers and public intellectuals in America. And one of the most interesting guys you’ll ever hear. He’s also a true badass and adventurer—the spirit of Hemingway—who joined us in Episode 100 and is back to talk candidly about his highly-anticipated, sure-to-be-best-selling new book, Freedom.    Throughout history, humans have been driven by the quest for two cherished ideals: community and freedom. The two don’t coexist easily: we value individuality and self-reliance, yet are utterly dependent on community for our most basic needs. In this intricately crafted and thought-provoking book, Sebastian examines this tension that lies at the heart of what it means to be human. Over a year, Sebastian and three friends—a combat photographer and two War vets—walked the railroad lines of America. It was an experiment in personal autonomy, but also in interdependence. Dodging railroad cops, sleeping under bridges, cooking over fires and drinking from creeks and rivers, the men forged a unique reliance on one another. Junger weaves his account of this journey together with primatology and boxing strategy, the history of labor strikes and Apache raiders, the role of women in resistance movements, and the brutal reality of life on the Pennsylvania frontier. Written in exquisite, razor-sharp prose, the result is a powerful examination of the primary desire that defines us. Junger is the #1 NY Times Bestselling author of The Perfect Storm, Fire, A Death In Belmont, War and Tribe and the visionary filmmaker behind Restrepo, Korengal and Which Way Is The Front Line From Here? He is also the Founder of RISC (Reporters Instructed in Saving Colleagues)--a non-profit dedicated to promoting the safety of freelance journalists working in conflict zones.  Sebastian has been in the toughest war zones all over the world--and told stories about what happens in war and what happens after. He’s a defender of democracy. A keeper of the flame. And a conscience for America. He again joins our host, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff), for a real and extended conversation that will leave you informed and inspired. Rieckhoff also presses Sebastian to share the pieces of the book he left out, the time he almost died, what he’s looking forward to this summer and, as with all returning guests--pancakes v waffles.  It’s amazing conversation to inspire--and to help you stay vigilant. And have been happening for years. And as the summer comes and Americans get less vigilant, our enemies are attacking.  Russian-backed hackers attacked our 2016 election. In 2021, every day in Congress is a kind of mortal combat.  But the violence and fighting in Washington that we’ve seen in the last year--and on the January 6th attack--is not the first violence American has seen in the Capitol. It’s just the first seen by this generation.  Our host, activist, author and combat veteran, Paul Rieckhoff ( @PaulRieckhoff), breaks down the history, context and what could happen next.  And he talks to Arizona Congressman and Marine Corps infantry combat veteran, Ruben Gallego (@RubenGallego). Gallego has been a political combatant in the news a ton lately. He was inside the US Capitol during the attack on January 6th, helping his colleagues put on their gas masks and prepare to fight for their lives. He’s been slamming Republican leadership, serving on the House Armed Services Committee, leading the charge to get veterans healthcare for burn pits and other toxin exposure, and clashing with controversial Republican Congresswoman Majorie Taylor Green. Taylor Green called Gallego a “coward” and Tweeted “Democrats are the enemy within.”  Gallego fired back, Tweeting “"I was trying to figure what type of pen to stab your friends with if they overran us on the floor of the House of Representatives while trying to conduct a democratic transition of power. So please shut your seditious, Qanon loving mouth when it comes to who loves America,"  It’s just another week of fireworks in Washington in 2021. But it’s also almost Mother’s Day--and Independent Americans is bringing light to contrast all the heat of other political pods. We’re bringing the power of the Righteous Media 5 I’s: independence, integrity, information, inspiration and impact. And a conversation to test you---to enlighten you---and to help you stay vigilant. “Thank you for your patience.” That’s how President Biden ended his historic and unusual address to the joint session of Congress. After all we’ve been through over the last four years. And after the last year especially, America was in the roughest place of our lifetime. And we hit rock bottom on January 6, 2021. That was the low point of our lifetime. And damn, it was low. But America is now bouncing off bottom. And Biden’s speech laid it out. 100 days are down. The pandemic is on the run. Trump is off the radar. The vaccines are here. The jobs are coming back. The masks are coming down. And hope is in the air.  And our host, Paul Rieckhoff ( @PaulRieckhoff), breaks it all down. How Biden’s plan will help combat domestic extremism, how he’s making the smartest and most transformative education investment in America since the GI Bill, and what happens now in Afghanistan.  We’re not back yet. But America is on the comeback. And gaining steam fast. But it’s up to all of us to finish the job. But how do we do that? Can our politics do that? Can the Democrats do that? Can the Republicans be a part of that? Are independents the key?  We’ve got the perfect guest for this moment. One of the most influential and impactful political strategists of our time. Paul Begala (@PaulBegala) is a guy who knows about bouncing back. He knows about what it takes. He’s been in the war room. And he understands what it means to bounce off bottom. He led a then Presidential candidate in one of the biggest bouncing off bottom campaigns in history. Begala was a chief strategist for the 1992 Clinton–Gore campaign, making Clinton the first Democrat to occupy the White House in twelve years. As counselor to Clinton, he coordinated policy, politics, and communications. And later, Begala gained national prominence as part of the political consulting team Carville and Begala, along with fellow Clinton advisor James Carville. They’ve been the Batman and Robin of Democratic politics in America for decades.  Begala’s also been a fixture in political media. He was a co-host of Equal Time on MSNBC with Oliver North, and a co-host on CNN’s Crossfire with Tucker Carlson. Begala now appears regularly on CNN and is a Professor at Georgetown University. He’s also a patriotic American. A gun owner. A farmer. A lover of beer. A bigger lover of Texas. And a very proud husband and father of four boys. And in his own way, even partisan Begala is an independent American. He delivers a fun and motivating master class on current American politics. And shares stories and insights from a fascinating life in the mix. And how we can all be a part of the great American recovery. Independent Americans is bringing light to contrast all the heat of other political pods. We’re bringing the power of the Righteous Media 5 I’s: independence, integrity, information, inspiration and impact. And a conversation to test you---to enlighten you---and to help you stay vigilant. The biggest verdict of or time is in and Officer Derek Chauvin is guilty of murder. Is America guilty of celebrating too much? Is this a turning point--or just a one-off? Did American political leaders do enough? What are the parallels between the 2020 George Floyd murder video and 2002 beheading video of journalist Daniel Pearl? What happens next? Baratunde Thurston (@Baratunde) is back to help us break it all down. The dynamic activist, host of the popular podcast How to Citizen, and author of the bestseller, How To Be Black joined us a year ago for Episode 59. And he rejoins the show now in the midst of a barnstorming tour across the American media landscape that has spanned from Conan to a weekly segment on MSNBC’s The 11th Hour with Brian Williams. He joins his old friend, our host, Independent activist, author, social entrepreneur and Army veteran @PaulRieckhoff for a fascinating, rapid-fire and riveting conversation. Baratunde is a powerful, inspiring and dynamic next-generation thought leader. He’s worked for The Onion, produced for The Daily Show, advised the Obama White House, and cleaned bathrooms to pay an education at Harvard. Baratunde serves on the National Board of BUILD, an organization that uses entrepreneurship-based experiential learning to propel underserved youth through to college and career success, serves on the Brooklyn Public Library board of trustees and his TED Talk has over 5 million views. He and Rieckhoff have known each other for over a decade, and they chop it up for a fun, emotional and inspiring conversation that you’ll want to talk about and share. 110. Jon Bernthal. The Iconic Actor Gets Real About America at a Crossroads. Defining Toughness, and Insurrectionist Using The Punisher Skull. George Floyd, Fatherhood, Sativa, DMX, Pitbulls. Biden's Afghanistan Drawdown.

President Biden has declared the war in Afghanistan over. The George Floyd murder case continues to unfold. Coronavirus variants are spreading fast. And the J & J vaccine is on pause. It’s still a tough time in America. 100 days into the Biden presidency, things remain pretty damn turbulent. And Americans are still deeply divided. But millions are vaccinated, our troops are coming home from the longest war in our history, and summer will be here soon. And we are finally looking back on the last few very tough years, and trying to chart a better course forward. That includes exploring what it means to be a leader, to be a citizen, to be a patriot, and to be tough. Far too often in America lately, tough has been defined by a fist. But some are trying to redefine toughness with an open hand--instead of a clenched one. With soft power, instead of hard. And most of all, with an open heart. As we all process the brutal drama of the last year, we’re all exploring what it means to be survivors of this life, this time, and his pandemic. And we’re all at least a little bit tougher.  And few have defined American toughness on our screens over the last decade like Jon Bernthal (@JohnnyBernthal). And few define toughness better in real life. After growing up DC, facing down tremendous adversity, and grinding for two decades, Jon has now emerged as one of the most dynamic and exciting actors in Hollywood. America has come to love him in defining roles on The Walking Dead, The Pacific, The Wolf of Wall Street, Fury, Sicario, Baby Driver and Ford v Ferrari. And as Frank Castle, in The Punisher. Soon, he’ll star in The Many Saints of Newark, the prequel of The Sopranos, the reboot of American Gigolo on Showtime, and King Richard, a story about the early days of Venus and Serena Williams. Bernthal’s one of the hardest-working actors in America. He’s also one of the coolest--and one of the most real.  He’s married to a nurse, dedicated to his family, and worked for causes ranging from the USO to protecting pitbulls to founding Drops Fill Buckets. Bernthal’s a guy who shaped what it means to be American to the world. And he joins us on Independent Americans for a raw and real conversation spanning the debate around statehood for DC, to the George Floyd trial, to the insurrection in his hometown. Bernthal (a boxer) pulls no punches. He’s known our host, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff), for 20 years. And he opens up about what makes him happy, the impact of DMX on his life, and why he’s optimistic about the future.. America is deeply divided. But not about the things Jon’s been a part of. And Independent Americans is killing misinformation like Shane Walsh killed zombies in The Walking Dead. And we're bringing a punishing Frank-Castle-like blast of light to contrast all the heat of other political pods. We're bringing the Fury of the Righteous Media 5 I’s: independence, integrity, information, inspiration and impact. 109. Ethan Nadelmann. Pre-4/20 Marijuana Special Episode. New York Legalizes Cannabis. Should All Drugs Be Legal? Can Weed Spark America’s Post-Pandemic Economic Recovery?

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 8, 2021 82:58

The marijuana reform movement is on fire. In the election last year, beneath all the Biden and Trump drama, every single state-level cannabis ballot initiative passed--from New Jersey to Mississippi to South Dakota. And now, New York state has legalized the green stuff. Federal legalization is gaining steam, the industry is exploding and everyone wants in on the weed movement. Marijuana is no longer a partisan or fringe issue--it’s popular, mainstream and key to the future of the American economy post-pandemic. And it’s got tremendous support from most independent Americans. 7 in 10 independents and moderates back legalization. So as 4/20 (the unofficial marijuana holiday) nears, Independent Americans is sparking up the cannabis conversation again--and continuing our focus on the state of affairs, the controversies, and the future of cannabis. And we’re also digging into broader drug policy changes happening in America from opioids to psychedelics to criminal justice reform.   And so The Godfather of Drugs returns to IA! Ethan Nadelmann (@EthanNadelmann) has been called America’s real Drug Czar. He joined us way back in Episode 12--and he’s back again to bring his unparalleled insight and experience. Ethan has been the mastermind behind the biggest changes to drug policy in US history. A Harvard PhD and the son of a rabbi, Ethan founded the trailblazing Drug Policy Alliance in 1994 and was a lead strategist behind 30 years of reform--including California’s historic 2014 Prop 47 referendum that reduced drug possession for personal use to a misdemeanor. This pivotal political victory proved to be the first domino to fall in a string of historic national changes and unleashed the wave of legalization of marijuana in states all across America we see now—with more to come soon. Easter and Passover are behind us, March Madness is over, the vaccine is hitting millions of arms daily, and things are warming up nationwide. But few issues are heating up more than cannabis. And few have a more fascinating past--or a more exciting future. Ethan returns to Independent Americans to chop it up with our host, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) to break it all down. Rieckhoff is a longtime advocate for drug reform, who has appeared in the media often on the subject, written about it extensively, testified before Congress about the impacts of cannabis for veterans, and spearheaded the landmark VA Medicinal Cannabis Research Act of 2018. America is deeply divided. But not about marijuna anymore. And Independent Americans is packing a bowl of light to contrast all the heat of other political pods. Every show is pre-rolled with the Righteous Media 5 I’s: independence, integrity, information, inspiration and impact--to keep you empowered. It’s spring break this week for millions of kids across America. School’s out, Passover, Easter, and March Madness are also here, and millions nationwide are spending extra time with family. And so are we. In this special episode, we are thrilled to introduce you to two new members of our media family: the captivating hosts of the newest Righteous Media production: Everybody and Their Mother Has a Podcast.  Rick and his mom (Sharon) are quarantining together in a secret desert location. And it’s been VERY interesting. And fun and inspiring. This charming, new, weekly podcast will be like a warm cup of cocoa with your mom or best friend. Everybody takes you inside the house with Rick and Sharon, two other humans (and their cat), and along for some very special adventures. From Rick’s music-making, to Sharon’s painting, to their shared passion for supporting and understanding the developmental disabilities of Rick’s brother, to breaking down current events, this show will bring smiles and warmth to your ears every time you download.  Rick Sorkin (@RickSorkin) is a Santa Monica-based Music Producer, Multi-Instrumentalist, Creative Strategist, Plant-based Chef and Co-host of Everybody.... He’s also 6’5”, ambidextrous and followed on Twitter by Barack Obama. Born and raised in Philly, Rick earned a Business and Music Degrees from The George Washington University. He’s spent time on Madison Avenue and in the center of Hollywood, where he created and contributed to many of the now-common global digital advertising and talent practices. Rick’s co-host is his amazing mom. Sharon Koppelman is an artist and a career educator. Sharon’s guiding philosophy is that everyone benefits personally by contributing to their household and their community, and therefore should be supported to do so regardless of ability level. She is Past Board Chair of SPIN, Inc., a non-profit that provides a life of possibilities and assistance to thousands. Sharon taught in the Philadelphia public school system and was adjunct Assistant Professor at Drexel University, where she taught in the Education program. Sharon’s stand-up comedy experience has so far been limited to a single performance in Philly at the now-legendary Cabaret L’Etage. And now, she has a podcast with her son. Things are improving quickly in much of America. But we’re not done with the pandemic yet. The emotional trial in the death of George Floyd is underway, disgusting attacks on Asian-Americans continue, and COVID cases and hospitalizations are rising. But the vaccine is rolling out fast, cannabis was legalized in New York, and Michael Strahan closed the gap in his teeth. These are weird times. And Rick and Sharon join Independent Americans and our host Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) to break it all down. It’s a light-hearted break from the intensity of the last year. Independent Americans is your trusted, independent source for news, politics, culture and inspiration. It’s a smart, fresh, candid perspective you won’t find anywhere else in the media. And we’ll always be grounded in a focus on national security, foreign affairs and domestic threats.  Despite the lack of media coverage, America is still very much at war. While the rest of the media obsesses over Trump’s CPAC appearance, Ted Cruz’s travel, and changes to Mr Potato Head and Dr Seuss, we’re digging into the real and urgent threats facing you, your family and our country.  Why are defense leaders guarding against extremists strikes again this week on/around March 4th? Why that date? What’s the story behind the recent missile strikes in Syria ordered by Biden? What will happen next with Russia after new sanctions? With our country slammed by COVID, will our enemies use this opportunity to strike? Where’s the next hot spot in the world for the US military? Why did Laura Ingraham and Fox News put a target on the back of one of our frequent guests and a decorated Navy veteran? Our host, Army combat veteran and author Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) is bringing his extensive national security and political expertise to focus this vital episode on the under-reported national security threats that should keep all Americans up at night. It’s a look into the stories that aren’t on the front pages, but probably should be.  And we’re doing a rapid-fire tour of the global landscape with one of our most popular guests of all time: Malcolm Nance (@MalcolmNance). America’s favorite terrorism expert, Malcolm is a decorated military veteran, an astute analyst, and a truth teller, MSNBC’s Terrorism Analysts and a NY Times Bestselling author, the retired Navy Master Chief served as a specialist in Naval Cryptology and was involved in counter-terrorism, intelligence, and combat operations around the world and served as an instructor in Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE) training. He’s also one of the most interesting guys anywhere. The man has stories--and enemies foreign and domestic. That now includes Fox News primetime host, Laura Ingraham.  Last fall, Malcolm joined this show and predicted the kind of post-election violence we saw in Washington on January 6th. Back in Episode 13 and Episode 94, he also predicted national security threats to come. And he joins Independent Americans again now to share some new predictions.  America is more divided than ever before. But Independent Americans is adding light to contrast all the heat of other political shows. Every episode brings the Righteous Media 5 I’s: independence, integrity, information, inspiration and impact--and explores the most pressing issues of the day with leaders who are shaping what America will be in the future.  If you’re among the 40% of Americans who are independent, this is your show. If you’re a Republican or Democratic Party, but you’re not a die-hard partisan, this is your show. If you’re a concerned American who cares about the future of your country, this is your show. Our host, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) is tearing into a pivotal week in the quest for accountability after the Jan 6 attack, Biden’s first month in office, 500,000 dead from COVID, fallout from the Texas power outages, and NASA’s landing a rover on Mars.  With America at a crossroads, our important, inspiring and iconic guest is Darren Walker (@DarrenWalker). The President of the mighty $14B Ford Foundation, Darren is one of the most influential leaders in America. He rose from the first class of Head Start, to leading one of the most powerful organizations on Earth. A true helper, patriot, and conscience for America, Darren was named to Time’s Most Influential People, Rolling Stone’s People Shaping the Future, Fast Company’s Most Creative People in Business and Out magazine’s Power 50. Under his leadership, Ford became the first non-profit in US history to issue a $1B designated social bond to strengthen non-profit organizations in the wake of COVID. For over 80 years, Ford has been focused on a mission to reduce poverty and injustice, strengthen democratic values, promote international cooperation, and advance human achievement.  With America facing a daunting collision of mammoth challenges, Darren is attacking them more than almost any other leader. He joins us for an insightful conversation about the fragile state of affairs, the impact of COVID, inequity and extremism on our most vulnerable. He breaks down the failure in Texas, and what it reveals about America, and why he still believes in the spirit of America. And, as in every pod, we get insights into his leadership lessons learned, his favorite drink, and the first car he ever owned. Darren is empowering Americans in bold ways. And tackling the world’s biggest problems from climate change to racial justice to the pandemic. He’s a uniquely independent leader to guide us forward. As we all trudge through the final weeks of winter and toward a more vaccinated country, this conversation will warm your heart. America is more divided than ever before. Independent Americans is your trusted, independent source for news, politics, culture and inspiration. It’s a smart, fun, candid perspective you won’t find anywhere else in the media.  Guest Ken Feinberg is a master of disaster. He’s a leader who has been asked multiple times, by multiple Presidents, to do the impossible: to determine the dollar value of a human life after an unimaginable tragedy.  From Agent Orange after Vietnam, to 9/11, to the BP oil spill, to the Boston Marathon bombing, to the Aurora, Colorado movie theater shooting, to the Sandy Hook massacre, now, to the church sexual assault scandals and the opioid epidemic, Ken has been tasked with the mammoth assignment of determining the worth of an individual life. He is the author of What Is Life Worth?: The Inside Story of the 9/11 Fund and Its Effort to Compensate the Victims of September 11th and Who Gets What: Fair Compensation after Tragedy and Financial Upheaval, was profiled in the documentary Playing God, and will be played by actor Michael Keaton in the upcoming Netflix film, Worth. The movie---the first feature film presented by Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions with Netflix--explores Ken’s leadership in administering the unprecedented $7 billion Victims Compensation Fund for 5,300 people. Worth also stars Stanley Tucci and Amy Ryan and premieres on Netflix later this year on the 20th anniversary of 9/11. Ken Feinberg is a voice of reason, a conscience, a mediator and a uniquely independent leader on the American political stage. And a voice we need now more than ever.  Ken joins his former student, our host and 9/11-First Responder, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff), for a thoughtful and candid conversation about the calls for a 9/11-style January 6th Commission, the appointment of Merrick Garland to lead the Dept of Justice, whether or not there will be civil lawsuits after the attack on the Capitol, how to lead in times of partisanship, and how to face pain in life. And, of course, what he drinks, his first car, and how he got to where he is in life.  America is more divided, more angry, and more violent than ever before. But Independent Americans is adding light to contrast the heat. Every episode brings the Righteous Media 5 I’s: independence, integrity, information, inspiration and impact--and explores the most pressing issues of the day with important, inspiring and iconic leaders who are shaping what America has been, is now and will be in the future. Welcome to Season 2. Yep, we’ve changed the name of the show.  For 100 episodes, we were united in our understandable anger. We were united in highlighting for others issues that had us angry--and should have everyone angry. And we were united in turning that anger into positive impact. That positive impact inspired action, supported legislation, elevated courageous voices, united people of all backgrounds, drove change--and left you entertained and inspired.  But in the last few weeks, much has changed. Much has improved. And much has gotten worse. And so much has been twisted and manipulated. Including anger. The anger of many people of all backgrounds--but especially among those recruited into extremism. The anger of millions was something we explored for 100 episodes. Our anger--and the anger of others. And in the last few weeks, what so many of us saw as possible, became reality. That anger was weaponized and unleashed on our nation’s capitol in a truly terrible way.  And while it’s never been more understandable to be angry, it’s not enough anymore. America is actually more divided, more angry, and more violent than ever before. And we need to combat that. We need to add light to the heat---anywhere possible. Independent Americans will be a critical part of the solution. 42% of Americans are independents, while only 30% are Republican and 27% Democrat. Since the attack on the Capitol, thousands of Americans have changed their party status. 90% of those Republicans defectors are now unaffiliated/independent. As our guest explains, that number of independents is growing fast. The most powerful affiliation in American politics is no affiliation at all. Independent Americans are the future.  Evan McMullin (@EvanMcMullin) is a patriot. And an independent. He had a career with the CIA, in business, and in Republican politics. In 2016, he ran for President of the United States as an independent. He now leads Stand Up Republic, a nonprofit focused on government reform. Evan is a face of the future. And he’s a leader in a movement to change our country for the better. He doesn’t accept the status quo or fake patriots.  He joins our Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) for a candid conversation to break down the attack on the Capitol, the implosion of the Republican party, and what it’ll take for independent candidates to win elections in the future.  If you’re among the 40% of Americans that are independent, this is your show. If you’re a Republican or Democratic Party, but you’re not a die-hard, this is your show. If you’re a concerned American who cares about the future of your country, this is your show. Just when you think things can't shock you anymore, politics in America finds a way.  We now all know about Q Anon. And we’re learning more and more about the role it/they played in the January 6 terrorist attack on our Capitol. And over the next few weeks, as the second impeachment trial of Donald Trump unfolds, we’ll all learn more about the conspirators, ringleaders, supporters — traitors — who made it all possible. And who are still conspiring right now. Many in the shadows of the internet and our society. But some are doing it right out in the open.  Marjorie Taylor Greene is U.S. Representative for Georgia's 14th congressional district. She was elected this fall and sworn in last month. Video emerged this week showing her harassing and stalking a Parkland survivor, 17-year-old David Hogg. After claiming Parkland didn’t happen, a plane didn’t hit the Pentagon on 9/11 and Trump didn’t lose the election.  A new American insurgency is now out in the open — and likely, growing. And growing thanks to the calls for attack by Donald Trump, fueled by calls from enablers like Rudy Giuliani, and propelled thanks to rising stars of the insurgency like Majorie Taylor Greene. She’s not last, crazy, dying gasp of a desperate group of people. She is leading the next wave.  And a brave father is leading the charge to fight back. This special dispatch features an urgent conversation with a leader who is fighting a fight that shouldn't have to be fought. Fred Gutenberg is a hero. And a helper. Fred wrote a book called Find The Helpers. He suffered an unimaginable loss when his 14-year-old daughter Jamie was murdered at Parkland, Florida’s Stoneman Douglas High School. Despite his pain, he emerged the very next day. He spoke at a vigil addressing his community. It was carried nationally and the entire country was riveted by what he said. And he has not stopped ever since then. And today, he introduced legislation to fight lies and stop Congresswoman Majorie Taylor Greene. Fred joined us back in Episode 74 of Angry Americans in August of last year and he’s here again. It’s an urgent and timely conversation you need to hear.  The war is on. This is your update. What do we make of this week? What is our place in history? What’s next? 96. SPECIAL DISPATCH: Dan Lamothe. The Washington Post Pentagon Reporter. BREAKING: 12 National Guard Soldiers Removed from Inauguration Duty. How Safe Is DC? Inside the Military Presence in Washington. Screening 25,000 Troops for Extremism.

This pre-inauguration special installment of The Dispatches features an urgent conversation with a leader who is covering maybe the most important story in America right now: our national, military response to the rising, imminent domestic threat at the inauguration and beyond.  As 25,000 National Guard troops envelope Washington, DC, The Washington Post is now reporting that 12 members of the National Guard have just been removed from inauguration duty due after security screenings. At least two of those removed have possible sympathies for anti-government groups. And there may be more to come. The threat of an insider attack at the inauguration is very real.  This is happening the same day that General Llyod Austin, Joe Biden’s nominee for Secretary of Defense, faced confirmation hearings in the Senate.  The same day that a U.S. Army soldier was arrested for allegedly assisting ISIS in plans to kill his fellow soldiers in the Middle East and hit terrorist targets in the US including the 9/11 Memorial in New York City.  A new American insurgency---is now out in the open--and likely, growing. This is our new normal now. America is at war with the domestic terrorists. We are now truly a country at war with ourselves.  Our guest for this episode is tearing into the breaking news from inside the military and breaks down this urgent and evolving story. Dan Lamothe (@DanLamothe) is one of the best military and Pentagon reporters in America. He has written about the Armed Forces for more than a decade, traveling extensively, embedding with each service, and covering combat in Afghanistan numerous times. His intrepid reporting is breaking news you need to know more about.  President Mayhem calls reporters like Dan enemies of the people. We consider reporters like Dan defenders of our democracy. Guardians of the people. And he takes you deeper into an urgent side of inauguration that will only get a brief mention on most cable news networks.  How safe is the inauguration? How the hell can the FBI and Department of Defense screen 25,000 National Guard troops for extremism in a week? If DC is secure, what might domestic terrorists hit this week instead?  This is the important stuff. This is the game-changing stuff. This is the stuff you need to know.  Our host, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) is an Army infantry and Military Police (MP) veteran, he’s fought an insurgency in Iraq, he’s guarded against violent mobs and terror attacks, and he’s set up check-points in New York City after 9/11.  Most of the American media is looking on the surface---and looking back. In 2021, America is at war with ourselves.  The Dispatches is a quick-hit series of breaking news podcasts hosted by Iraq war veteran, author and activist Paul Rieckhoff that gives you information and analysis you need to protect yourself and the people you care about. Dr. Jason Dempsey is a bad-ass warrior-scholar. A former Army infantryman with a PhD in politics. A professor, author, researcher, combat veteran and one of the country’s foremost experts on civil-military relations, Jason is West Point graduate and Adjunct Senior Fellow of the Military, Veterans, and Society Program at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), and a powerful voice that must be heard.  He led units on the ground in Afghanistan, served inside the White House, and literally wrote the book on the modern United states military: Our Army: Soldiers, Politics, and American Civil-Military Relations. He’s also a dad, a lover of good beer and no-BS guy who pulls no punches. Jason previously joined us on Episode 76 of Angry Americans. In his last visit was in September, we broke down Trump calling troops “Losers” and “Suckers.” I asked him if the military will save us. We discussed how Generals Mattis and Kelly Were Complicit. We broke down The 19th Anniversary of 9/11. And Jason offered the best Peeps answer ever. When the news was unfolding, Jason took us behind the scenes, inside the White House and Pentagon, and deep into our history as Americans. He’s back to do it again.  The war is on. This is your update. This is The Dispatches. The Dispatches is powered by Righteous Media. See video of this conversation with Jason Dempsey and a range of music, political, business and media players from Chuck D to Jeffrey Wright to Medal of Honor Recipient Flo Groberg to Sarah Jessica Parker to Stephen Colbert to Meghan McCain to Mayor Pete Buttigieg on the Righteous Media YouTube page. We are now truly a country at war. At war with the domestic terrorists. At war with the coronavirus. At war with a racist legacy. In 2021, America is at war with ourselves.  The Dispatches is a quick-hit series of breaking news podcasts hosted by Iraq war veteran, author and activist Paul Rieckhoff that gives you information and analysis you need to protect yourself and the people you care about. This dispatch features an urgent conversation with America’s favorite terrorism expert: Malcolm Nance. The decorated military veteran, MSNBC terror analyst, and truth teller is back. Malcolm has spent 36 years focused on terrorist strategy, tactics and ideology and previously joined us on Episode 81 and Episode 13 of Angry Americans. In his last visit in October, he predicted exactly what we’re seeing in the headlines today. He described the domestic threat that was looming, rising and preparing to attack. Most folks didn’t see it coming. Malcolm Nance did.  Malcolm again joins Paul Rieckhoff to break down what happened inside the US Capitol on January 6th, what most of the media missed about the violent attack, and what could happen next. It’s an expert breakdown from two combat veterans who also explain the big picture.  What are we facing? Is this the beginning of a American insurgency? How violent will the next few weeks be across the country? Most of the American media is looking back. In this episode, we’re looking forward.  The war is on. This is your update. America is under attack from within. Domestic terrorists invaded the Capitol. President Mayhem is blowing it all up on his way out. For months on Angry Americans, we warned that this could happen. It’s a dark time for all Americans. But this episode will help you understand it, unpack the causes and failures, and prepare for what comes next.  Chuck Hagel is back to break it down with our host: Army veteran and Founder of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff). Hagel shares unparalleled experience and perspective in this fragile time. He served as the Secretary of Defense under Obama and as a Senator from Nebraska. An independent Republican and the first Vietnam veteran in American history to lead the Pentagon, Hagel has been a straight-talking voice of reason for decades. And after joining us for a powerful Episode 82, he’s back now to analyze the unfolding national security and political crisis. He also explains how the urgent, unprecedented OpEd he authored with the other nine living former secretaries of defense secretaries came together. How did this happen? What will the military do now? How bad is it all? Hagel also breaks down the historic win for the Democrats in the Georgia Senate run-off election--and the future of our politics. This pod smartly and uniquely tears into all of it.  If you’re not angry, you’re not paying attention. Angry Americans is your trusted, independent source for news, politics, culture and inspiration. It’s a smart, fun and no-BS perspective like nowhere else in the media.  See video of this conversation with Secretary Hagel and a range of music, political, business and media players from Chuck D to Jeffrey Wright to Medal of Honor Recipient Flo Groberg to Sarah Jessica Parker to Stephen Colbert to Meghan McCain to Mayor Pete Buttigieg on the Righteous Media YouTube page.
