Before an outpouring of dance-music dignitaries and DJs of all stripes, DJ Times magazine celebrated its 30th anniversary this past Jan. 16 at The VNYL club in Manhattan. "I've always loved DJ Times & appreciated both cover stories I've done with you guys. It was a pleasure to raid my storage locker & grab vinyl as this was the second time in 15 years I've played it. There's lots of people bumping into the booth & you really feel like you're in the party the way it was recorded. Playing these records reminded me how much simpler House Music was in the 90's & how pure these tracks come across 20+ years later. There's a lot to be learned from the music of the past to influence the future forward music of tomorrow. House Music will never go away & now that we've past 35 years of it, there are certified classics that stand beside any other genre's best. I chose to play a bit more Underground in this set through my Chicago lens & hope it brought some folks back & turned a slew of kids on to some sounds they've never heard before. B. Cox reviews Scarface's classic 7th album The Fix as it turns 20. After leaving long time label Rap-A Lot, the Houston veteran emcee moved to Def Jam South as their president, but was coaxed into releasing first and only studio album while on the label. Assisted by an all-star production cast that included himself, Kanye West, Nottz, the Neptunes, Mike Dean and T-Mix, he spit his customary commanding flow telling both cautionary tales and warnings against those who opposed him. However, Scarface also took the time to reflect on his spirituality and what his relationship with God did for him during hard times.He was also had an all-star slate of guest appearances, headlined by the likes of Jay-Z, Beanie Siegel, Nas, Kelly Price, WC and Faith Evans.
