'A Break From The Psychic Torment' encapsulates a lot about our collaborative, and somewhat contradictory, approach to making dance music together - it's wonky sound design meets joyous hooks and grooves. Basically, we take the fun seriously, because creating art designed for cathartic release in such challenging times requires commitment to joy. Both 'Ooh Sorbet' and 'Prego' are designed for dark rooms and late nights, but began life in the bucolic woods behind Zo's then-home in upstate New York, with us both rooting through the undergrowth and recording the sounds of stick hitting rock, or twig thwacking bottle, all of which became the percussive building blocks behind the tracks. Again, this was definitely a fun process - but more importantly, it gave these tracks a unique sonic identity. 'Sorbet' works around an almost Todd Edwards style cut-up of a vocal, while 'Prego' builds to a breakdown made from another field recording, this time from a park in Beijing. 'Panda Beef' and 'Let's Giggle' were both languishing on Zo's hard drive, clearly sick ideas but just not quite gelling into cohesive tracks. Between marathon bouts of 'Alone' and essential trips to the bakery in Woodstock for almond croissants, we reworked and fashioned them into something much closer to finished products. Mexican vocalist Sirius Soundz sent over some raw vocals, which we chopped up over the slightly Dembow-feeling beat of 'Panda'; an extra layer of Dance Mania-style bleeps brought out the cheeky wink lurking above the bassline of 'Giggle'; and a final session back in Binga's studio in Bristol locked everything in place. And finally, the dog in the artwork is the ultimate Executive Producer behind the whole project, Sadie, who is a very good dog indeed.

"We made something we could dance to." The Chicago juke and footwork pioneer reflects on 40 years of Dance Mania and his longtime collaboration with the late DJ Rashad. Anyone with a passing interest in footwork and juke will know of Traxman. Corky Strong has a long history in the world of Chicago dance music, first releasing on the legendary Dance Mania label—which is now celebrating 40 years—in the mid-'90s. He's since split his productions between ghetto house, juke and footwork, releasing alongside titans of Black American music like the late DJ Deeon and DJ Rashad. Strong went on to become a member of DJ Rashad's renowned Teklife crew, and he was one of the creators of the legendary mixtapes on coloured cassettes that became a prototype for juke and footwork's evolution. In this Exchange, Strong speaks with RA's Kiana Mickles in New York about how he first became introduced to this world through his cousins, with whom he'd listen to funk and slow jams, Parliament Funkadelic, Farley Jackmaster Funk, James Brown and a variety of hip-hop throughout the '80s. The pieces eventually fell into place, he recounts, when he met the "mysterious kid" DJ Rashad in 1997. Together, they helped shape the music scene in Chicago, and the rest, as they say, is history. Over the last few years, Strong has been celebrating footwork's past by putting out a series of albums called Da Mind of Traxman on Planet Mu. He's just released his third volume, and his first since 2014, which was crafted with the help of fellow Planet Mu artist Sinjin Hawke. Strong took on A&R duties to collate the best from hundreds of tracks dating back to 2005. The series is notable in part because it's a catalogue of footwork and its Chicago lineage—juke and house—as well as these genres' soul, funk and rock roots. Strong talks to Mickles about what Chicago's music scene was like in the '80s and '90s, why footwork was so rooted in dancing and where the genre is heading in the future. Welcome back guys, here on ESOA Podcast. Unfortunately, once again my guest for this episode cancelled just before the end. This immediately inspired me to record a musical special for you. I decided on a Chicago House and Techno special. Alongside Detroit, Chicago is clearly an important cornerstone. Without it, techno and house would not exist in their current form. Think about the impact that tracks like Move your Body or Acid Tracks still have today. Frankie Knuckles began playing early electronic productions back in 1977 in the then newly opened, rather run-down but well-equipped Warehouse club. A sound that continued to develop into later house and techno, with great, unforgotten names such as Marshall Jefferson, Larry Heard, Adonis, Tyree Cooper, Farley "Jackmaster" Funk, Frankie Knuckles, Steve "Silk" Hurley, DJ Pierre, Phuture, Mike Dunn, K-Alexi Bad Boy Bill, "Fast" Eddie Smith, Ron Hardy and Derrick Carter made history. The sound was released on labels such as DJ International, Dance Mania, Jack Trax, Underground Records and Trax Records. Friends, let this sound inspire you for the next two and a half hours. Have fun with ESOA Podcast 072 by myself, Thomas Schubert. Thanks for tuning in. This week Fraser presents the podcast with some stories and theories about the dancing plague. We also have James' dangerous news featuring a penguin post office. The dancing plague, also known as dancing mania, was a phenomenon that occurred primarily in Europe during the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods. It was characterized by groups of people dancing uncontrollably and often for extended periods of time, sometimes even to the point of exhaustion or death. The exact cause of the dancing plague remains a topic of debate among historians and scientists, with theories ranging from mass hysteria to ergot poisoning. One of the most well-known incidents of the dancing plague occurred in the city of Strasbourg in 1518, where a woman named Frau Troffea began dancing in the streets and soon attracted a large crowd of dancers. The phenomenon quickly spread throughout the city, with hundreds of people joining in the frenzied dancing. Authorities attempted to intervene by setting up stages and hiring musicians in an effort to tire out the dancers, but their efforts were largely unsuccessful. The dancing plague had a profound impact on the communities where it occurred, disrupting daily life and causing widespread fear and confusion. Some believed that the dancers were possessed by demons or under a curse, while others saw it as a form of divine punishment. In some cases, religious authorities were called upon to perform exorcisms or other rituals in an attempt to stop the dancing. While the dancing plague is now largely considered a historical curiosity, it continues to fascinate researchers and scholars who seek to understand the underlying causes of this bizarre phenomenon. Some have suggested that the dancing plague may have been a form of mass psychogenic illness, in which psychological factors such as stress, anxiety, or social tension triggered physical symptoms in a group of people. Others have pointed to the possibility of environmental factors, such as contaminated food or water, playing a role in the outbreaks.Overall, the dancing plague serves as a reminder of the mysterious and complex nature of human behaviour, and the ways in which social, psychological, and environmental factors can interact to produce unexpected and sometimes inexplicable outcomes.#podcast #britishpodcast #funny #dancemania #dancingplague #spotify #applepodcasts Hosted on Acast. TECH CLUBBERS PODCAST W/ DJ RUSH Isaiah Major aka DJ Rush is an American DJ, producer and entertainer from Chicago. Known for his alias Major Rush, Russian Roulette and The Drum Major. Rush made his way into the DJ business and never limited himself. He quickly found his way to Berlin, Germany and his career kicked off into high gear. Not only have his DJ skills and music selection moved and impressed fans all over the globe, his songs have made such a big impact on the dance scene with anthems like “Mutha Fucking Bass”, “Get On Up”, “I Believe” and the list goes on and on. Starting off with Dance Mania and running the gambit of most every techno label including his very anticipated Vigorous Digital and Kne' Deep Rec.. It becomes obvious why Daft Punk consider DJ Rush a hallmark in the industry, placing him near the start of the list in their seminal track “Teachers”. Rush combines all styles of music he loves, from Jazz, Disco, Funk and Soul to make the events more interesting and keeping the people on their toes. This happens not just within the music, but DJ Rush is the total package. Sometimes dressing up to show his sinister alias Russian Roulette; this what make the big man a strong entertainer and not just a standard disc jockey. Believing in expression is the key to entertaining and success. The lights were but a blur from the window as they roared down the M1 in the pissing rain. Horns blared and the occasional squeal of brakes was all that could be heard over the pounding from the car stereo. Everything inside the motor was banging and rumbling beneath the strain as they drove onwards into the darkness as fast as they could. They'd probably never get away with it - at least they'd tried. What was it? A stolen motor careering up the highway in the dead of night on a Tuesday? Of course it was, a Ford Escort to say the least, hitting 145 with the most brutal pedal to the metal in the glow of the orange floodlights. In the distance they could hear the sirens coming, it would all be over soon, up in flames in the back end of nowhere as they ran into the darkness. Papa Nugs is set to self release a new EP which can only be described as being 'no holds barred'. We are talking hair raising dancefloor pumpers reminiscent of old Techno raves, Dance Mania bangers and all of that other good stuff which happened in between.

Run it Red's 100th Episode is here and, to switch things up, my Discoid/House alias Ron Bacardi takes over with a much-requested Dj set recording, this one from DJ Bone's excellent Further party a few weeks back.   In eight years I've chalked up nearly 240hrs of music, dropped about 7000 new tracks and we're still going strong, something I'm immensely proud of. The show has always been about showcasing the best new music I can find, so huge thanks to the artists, labels and promo companies who send me music, I'm aware of how big a privilege it is to get so much great stuff on top of my own digging. Massive thanks to the mighty NTS too, it's wicked to be a regular on such a forward-thinking station and be part of a family that includes so many great DJs and selectors, but the biggest appreciation of all goes to the listeners, those who give me feedback when they see me on the road and especially the ones who go out and support the labels/artists they hear on the show. NÁKSI ATTILA Náksi Attila az egykori SOHO PARTY frontembere, szövegírója és egyik zeneszerzője, majd a NÁKSI vs BRUNNER dj duó tagja, ma STEREO PALMA művésznéven dj és producer. Számos arany- és platina státuszú mixlemezt, szerzői albumot, több száz remixet, több ezer fellépést, szereplést, élvonalbeli sikeres produceri munkákat és nagyszabású nemzetközi eredményeket társít nevéhez a szakma és minden zenekedvelő és zeneértő. Náksi Attila a Soho Party együtessel még a 90-es évek közepén robbant be a hazai zenei életbe, 1994-ben debütált PIZZA c. albumukkal azonnal platinalemezig jutottak. 2017-ben ő azaz a Stereo Palma képviselte Magyarországot a legendás TOMORROWLAND Fesztiválon Belgiumban.

Welcome to DRR Podcast 100, this week we welcome a very special guest for our centenary episode - DJ Rush, from Chicago, Illinois, USA. Isaiah Major aka Dj Rush is an American DJ, producer and entertainer from Chicago. Conquering so many clubs and events across Europe and gaining so much respect, Rush had a chance to host his own tents at Tomorrowland (Belgium), Dance Valley(Netherlands), Summer Spirit (Germany). Being such a killing machine, speaker beater, bass cranker, Rush likes to leave his fans and supporters minds and bodies tingling after each set, wanting more, more, more and more. Rush combines all styles of music he loves, from Jazz, Disco, Funk and Soul to make the events more interesting and keeping the people on their toes. This happens not just within the music but Dj Rush is the total package. Sometimes dressing up to show his sinister alias Russian Roulette; this what make the big man a strong entertainer and not just a standard disc jockey. Believing in expression is the key to entertaining and success. "The mix is pure old skool, every track is an original early to mid-90s tune (with the exception of Rain which is a late 80s Acid track and the end song which is a 2021 release, but a cheeky nod to a 90s classic) It starts off with some Italo House, which is this dreamy blend of Italo, Balearic and Piano house which I'm really loving at the moment, but is often too laid back to play out. I dip into some Dream House towards the end, which is that happy intersection between house and trance, which I'm also really enjoying right now. There are tracks from some iconic classic labels such as UR, Dance Mania, Sex Mania, Nu Groove, Warp and Stress Records - so some serious nods to Chicago, NYC, Detroit as well as UK house. It's very reminiscent of the sounds that were played when I first started clubbing and DJ-ing, so it's a real nod to my humble beginnings." Come and join us play back2back alllll night at Tola, Peckham this Saturday, 30th April. Guestlist available in the link above...

Big ups to Jana for this breathtaking mix! @norman-nodge has been a resident DJ at Berghain since 2005. Being a life-long music lover, DJ and promoter of his own parties during the 90s, Norman achieved his current status as Berlin's secret weapon for serious techno. Born in East German Leipzig, raised in Brandenburg, Norman got bitten by the techno bug after the wall came down. In 1994 he started to promote several events and launched his career as a DJ. At these parties, he got to know @marcel-fengler and @marceldettmann and literally became their mentor for all things techno. At the end of the 90s, Nodge backed out of the local nightlife in order to focus on becoming a lawyer and starting a family. Five years ago, Marcel Dettmann pitched him to @berghain management and he returned to DJing and became a resident instantaneously. Since then, he plays Berghain once a month, specialising in the almost forgotten art of warming up at the beginning of a night. In 2005 he also started to produce his own tracks. His maturity proved to be very beneficial in terms of his artistic vision, as he made up his mind about what he likes and what not a long time ago already. Unsurprisingly, his outings on Dettmann's @mdrofficial label, as well as his track “Native Rhythm Electric” for @ostgutton-official left a deep impression with headstrong techno lovers. With his dusty funk, static hiss and the rich thump of his kick drums, he managed to get himself recognised as one of techno's more unique auteurs. Norman Nodge cites Detroit techno (@axis-jeff-mills, @roberthood, 430 West), Chicago House (@reliefrecords, Dance Mania) and Techno (@luke-slater, Peacefrog, Mark Broom - @beardman) as his most essential influences. Hence, it is not surprising that he fuses the old with the new and the soft with the tough when he plays out. “It is my goal as a DJ to make people dance without walking on trodden paths of recent trends. I want to sensitize dancers for unusual sounds, old and new.” Stay Rave with #R13! Tracklist: 01 K. Back in 1518 the French city of Strasbourg experienced one of the worst recorded outbreaks of Dance Mania ever witnessed. The Dance Plague or Dance Epidemic struck almost 400 people and may have killed as many as 15 people a day. It lasted well over two months and left everyone puzzled. Demonic possession? Mold? Mass Hysteria? What caused this to happen and what did Saint Vitus have to do with it? We still don't know even 500 years later. But maybe a batch of sixth graders studying pathogens can figure it out. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/curator135)
