This is the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express and I'm Ichha Sharma.Today is the 6th of March and here are this week's headlines. In the biggest news today, India condemned a security breach incident during External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's trip to the UK, saying it deplored “the misuse of democratic freedom by such elements”. According to a purported video of the incident circulating on social media platform X, a man with the tricolour is seen rushing towards the car in which Jaishankar is seated. A group of protesters with pro-Khalistan flags can be seen shouting slogans even as the policemen stationed at the spot block the man and take him away.In another news making headline, Several members of the Jain community have knocked on the Madhya Pradesh High Court's doors after a family court in Indore denied them relief under the Hindu Marriage Act. First Additional Principal Judge, Family Court, Dhirendra Singh recently refused to grant divorce to a couple who practice the Jain religion under provisions of the Hindu Marriage Act, observing, “Jainism is a religion that opposes the fundamental Vedic traditions and beliefs of Hinduism and is not based on Vedic tradition, whereas Hinduism is entirely rooted in Vedic tradition.”In news from the North, following an order by the district administration on 28th of February, authorities have sealed 11 madrasas in Dehradun, citing non-registration with the state madrasa board or the education department. In January, before the local body elections, the state government ordered a verification drive and data from Dehradun was made public. The Dehradun District Magistrate, Savin Bansal, had stated that Sadar Dehradun tehsil had 16 unregistered and eight registered madrasas, Vikasnagar tehsil had 34 unregistered and 27 registered ones, Doiwala had one registered and six unregistered madrasas, and Kalsi had a single unregistered madrasa. In other news, a 27-year-old from Hyderabad who was pursuing higher studies in the United States was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Wisconsin, US in a suspected robbery at the local store where he worked part-time. Gampa Praveen Kumar, the deceased, was a native of K- sham-pet mandal in Telangana's Rangareddy district. He was a second-year MS in Data Science student at the University of Wisconsin. Kumar had gone to the US in August 2023 after completing his BTech in Hyderabad. In global news, Tropical Cyclone Alfred lashed parts of eastern Australia today, with early winds and rain leading to schools being closed, public transport halted, and residents looking for alternatives to sandbags by buying potting mix to reduce the impact of flooding. Cyclone Alfred is expected to make landfall early Saturday along the Queensland coast, somewhere between the Sunshine Coast region and the city of Gold Coast. Alfred is expected to become the first cyclone to cross the coast near Brisbane since Cyclone Zoe hit Gold Coast in 1974 and brought widespread flooding. This was the Catch Up on 3 Things by The Indian Express

Middle housing is all the rage in planning and urban development circles—that is, duplexes, triplexes, fourplexes, clusters of homes with no garages but maybe a shared park, in walkable neighborhoods close to transit. Basically, it's housing with many of the functions of traditional single-family homes but developed with equity, the environment and affordability in mind. This past week, the Asheville nonprofit Mountain True convened a panel to discuss what's called the "missing middle"—the absence of the kind of developments proponents believe can turn the tide of Asheville's affordable housing crisis. That conversation happened in front of about 100 people inside Ferguson Auditorium at A-B Tech. The Overlook with Matt Peiken recorded it and is posting it here in its entirety.SPONSOR: Greenland Pro Cleaning is a locally owned, eco-friendly, allergy-friendly cleaning company for homes, AirBnBs and offices. The climate clock is ticking faster and faster. How can we use capitalism to undo the bad stuff that capitalism did and maybe even make things better? That's today's big (loaded) question, and my returning guest is Akshat Rathi. Akshat is a London-based senior reporter, newsletter writer, and podcaster for Bloomberg News.Akshat has a PhD in organic chemistry from the University of Oxford, and a BTech in Chemical Engineering from the Institute of Chemical Technology in Mumbai. He is here today to talk about his first book, Climate Capitalism. This wonderful book tells the stories of people building solutions at scale to tackle one of humanity's greatest challenges. Some solutions we've already built, like solar and batteries, and some we're still working on because they take a lot of work, and money, and politics. In a world where journalism is going bye-bye, and the climate clock is ticking, but we've made so much progress, and we can make so much more, Akshat's reporting in this book couldn't be more timely, as we seek to answer the question, where are we on this timeline?-----------Have feedback or questions? In Episode 34, we look at rituals in Hinduism, in a conversation with Shri PVR Narasimha Rao. The English word ritual does not really capture the sense of sacred or meaningful action that is the core of Hinduism. What is the purpose of Sadhana? What place does it hold in Sanatana Dharma? What do the shastras say?We also touch on the “religious vs. spiritual” debate and understand the importance of both ritual and meditation. How do they help people in living a good life and finally, put them on the path to Moksha?Shri Rao expounds on the different types of sadhanas in Hinduism which are based on the five elements. How do they differ? Are pranayama and homa/havan the same in principle? This podcast will give you a deep understanding of Hinduism and the place of rituals (the better word is Sadhana!) Listen till the end for a special message on introducing rituals to children.Shri PVR Narasimha Rao has BTech from IIT Madra and a Masters from Rice University, USA. The second thing I did for overcoming impostor syndrome was just adopting this 1% better mindset that you're not seeking perfection. Every month or every year, you're going to improve yourself a little bit. The third thing is to just say yes to opportunity, even if you don't feel like you're 100% fit. And I think that goes more for applying for roles if you're looking for jobs, if you don't meet 100% of the job description, that's okay, you should still apply. Privacy is such an emerging field, and people encourage diversity, so you never know what your unique skill set would bring to the organisation, and maybe that's what they're looking for.  Evan Wilder could not have known that visiting his aunt and uncle would set him down the rabbit hole of distillation. He had just gotten into whiskey prior to the visit, and his uncle suggested they try some scotch—a bottle of Macallan 15. Before he knew it, he began exploring with peated whiskey, tried his hand at homebrewing, and registered at the Craft Beverage Institute of the Southeast at A-B Tech. Evan recently graduated from the program and will soon be headed down to Australia to work and expand his knowledge of the art of distilled spirit production. Evan joins me today, with a bottle of single malt whiskey in hand for Booze Clues, to discuss how he found the program at the Craft Beverage Institute of the Southeast. He discusses his work at The Chemist in North Carolina and the single malt whiskey exclusively produced for their award-winning bar, The Antidote. He describes his journey in homebrewing and explains how the pandemic led him to seek an education in distillation. Frameworks for building a constructive mentor-mentee relationship Pramath Raj Sinha has earned the tag of an institution builder, a profession that neither existed, nor could he ever have imagined for himself, when growing up in Patna, Bihar. What is perhaps less widely known is that as a Partner at McKinsey & Company, then as one of the Founders of the Indian School of Business (ISB), the Young India Fellowship (YIF), Ashoka University, the Vedica Scholars Programme for Women and the Naropa Fellowship, he has guided hundreds of students on their academic and career choices. As someone who studied metallurgical engineering, did robotics research, failed as an academic, then became a management consultant, a CEO, a media and now edtech entrepreneur, he believes you can surprise yourself with what you can do, yet shape your career purposefully and deliberately. This philosophy is the foundation for Pramath's latest venture, Harappa Education and its School of Leadership (HSoL), an online learning institution to teach Thrive Skills to working professionals across the world. For over twenty years now, he is a pioneering force in higher education, setting up more than a dozen innovative institutions and programs in India and abroad. His first book, An Idea Whose Time Has Come, about the ISB story, is now required reading for anyone building a new university or institution. In 2015, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) named him 'Personality of the Year' for his contributions to education. Earlier, he was listed by Thinkers50 as one of India's Top 50 Management Thinkers.Pramath received a BTech from IIT Kanpur (where he was conferred with the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2018) and an MSE and PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics.

If you think non-alcoholics are easy to make and have no future in the market, think again. John Lyda—full-time instructor at and stalwart of A-B Tech's Craft Beverage Institute of the Southeast and meadmaker extraordinaire—foresees that, as the industry innovates, non-alcoholic liquor will become as popular as their alcoholic counterparts. The industry, John says, will start to explore more flavor-wise, profile-wise, and body-wise in non-alcoholic beer—and that's something important as people are starting to realize that DUI charges cost a lot of money. In this episode, John and I discuss non-alcoholic beers, wines, and other beverages, why they're difficult to make, and why they're becoming more popular in the market.
