La Mesa de Científicos - La "desextinción" del Lobo Gigante

En Perspectiva

Play Episode Listen Later May 20, 2025 58:54

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 30, 2025 47:00

Some stories should be shared further, and this is one of them. Not just because it highlights the change in our climate, or the remarkable work of Mark and the team in Antartica recording the sounds and images of the icebergs, but because of how the story is told by Mark, and how their experience and his talent transcends the air waves.I wonder at what point we became so estranged from our relationship with this Earth. You're instantly transported to Australis, their vessel, and on the boat with Mark and the team. Antarctica is a place not meant for humankind. colourful and often tragic history reflects this. It is not that we are unwelcome here, more that we are not, perhaps, natural. In simple terms, it a beautiful tale, including how Carmen and Mark connected across the oceans, and still having yet to meet, brings you on board to relive how these Lincoln, Yoko and Ernest icebergs and their micro-environments end up projected onto the Auckland Museum.

Our coffee podcast The Coffee Sprudgecast is back for another rousing episode where hosts Jordan Michelman and Zachary Carlsen take a shortcut… a tiramisu shortcut? Michelman discusses an epic event held with La Marzocco in Florence to promote But First, Coffee that included a whole tiramisu cupping (three cakes that used three different coffees). Carlsen springs a package of Twinkies and claims to be able to make a quick tiramisu out of it. There's some horror, some shock, followed by some shocking surprises. There's so much more. Several coffees are had, all brewed with the Ceado Hoop Brewer. Michelman talks about Monmouth Coffee out of London and a bring-your-own-doughnut-to-a-cafe Dorkage Fee. There's an eccles cake and Lancaster cheese. Coffee ice cream is had. A lot going on here. Have a listen! Earlier this year host Mike Musto made a post about how he wanted to put 10,000-miles on his 1968 Charger in 2024. There were comments and questions, but not so much about the miles, but more so about the engine and drivetrain combination. The specs on the engine are mild. A 440 cubic inch big block with iron 906 heads that were bored .30 over, a 470 lift cam, with an 800 double-pumper on top. The transmission is a 727 with a reverse valve body mated to a gear vendor through an 8 3/4 rear with a 3.55 gear – as for power though, Musto really had no idea what the old lump made.   Enter Hemmings own Evan Perkins, our resident engine guru. He suggested that Musto throw it on the dynamometer at Westech in Southern, California, a mere 450-miles from Musto's home. Not only would that tell him the power output, but as Perkins explains, using a dynamometer is one the best ways to tune your vehicle and possibly even get some extra power.

The quiet neighborhood of Massapequa Park, typically known for its peaceful suburban charm, has been gripped by a disturbing revelation with the arrest of one of its residents, Rex Heuermann. Standing accused as the Gilgo Beach serial killer, Heuermann, an architect by profession, has been charged with the murders of three sex workers over a decade ago. His arrest has unraveled a tale of intrigue and horror that has shocked his community and beyond.   On July 14, Heuermann was charged with the gruesome murders of Amber Costello, Megan Waterman, and Melissa Barthelemy, all of whom disappeared between 2007 and 2010. Their bodies were later discovered at Gilgo Beach. In addition, Heuermann is the prime suspect in the murder of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, a fourth woman.   The news of his arrest sent shockwaves through Massapequa Park. His neighbors were taken aback, as Heuermann had lived amongst them with his wife, daughter, and stepson. He was perceived as a somewhat aloof figure who kept to himself. The image portrayed by his defense attorney as a "loving husband and devoted father" starkly contrasted with the persona he embodied in the eyes of his community.   Speaking to The New York Times, Neighbor Frankie Musto described Heuermann and his wife, Asa Ellerup, as reclusive figures who generally avoided interaction with their neighbors. Musto pointed out that their house was unkempt, which led her to forbid her daughter from visiting despite being friends with Heuermann's daughter. This antisocial behavior raised eyebrows among the locals, painting Heuermann and Ellerup as enigmatic figures.   The plot thickened when investigators found female hairs at the three crime scenes, which forensic analysis revealed belonged to Heuermann's wife, Asa Ellerup. However, authorities also confirmed through cell phone records that Ellerup was out of state when the murders occurred. This finding presented a paradox that further intrigued investigators, prompting them to dig deeper into the case.   Following Heuermann's arrest, a search of his residence led to the shocking discovery of a massive collection of firearms between 200 and 300. Heuermann's house, located just 20 minutes from Gilgo Beach, where the bodies of his victims were dumped, is now the center of a major investigation. Despite having legal permits for 92 guns, the sheer number of firearms found in his possession has raised eyebrows among law enforcement agencies.   The scope of the investigation is broadening, with police scrutinizing Heuermann's possible involvement in seven other murders, whose victims' bodies were also discovered along the shores of Gilgo Beach. His far-reaching connections span states and are potentially linked to unsolved murders in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, South Carolina, and Las Vegas.   Chilling eyewitness accounts from Heuermann's next-door neighbor, Dominick Cancellieri, have further painted a picture of the suspect's odd behavior. Cancellieri reported hearing Heuermann digging in his backyard during the early morning hours and frequently burning garbage. He also described Heuermann as an intimidating figure who once issued a veiled threat after a minor dispute over a parking space.   On the other hand, Heuermann's family, specifically his wife and children, reacted with shock and disgust at the allegations against him, according to Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison. Despite Heuermann pleading not guilty to all charges, his once ordinary life unravels, revealing more horrifying details with each passing day.  Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? In the last years of his life, Karl Marx expanded his research in new directions-studying recent anthropological discoveries, analyzing communal forms of ownership in precapitalist societies, supporting the populist movement in Russia, and expressing critiques of colonial oppression in India, Ireland, Algeria, and Egypt. Between 1881 and 1883, he also traveled beyond Europe for the first and only time. Focusing on these last years of Marx's life, this book dispels two key misrepresentations of his work: that Marx ceased to write late in life, and that he was a Eurocentric and economic thinker fixated on class conflict alone.  With The Last Years of Karl Marx: An Intellectual Biography (Stanford UP, 2020), Marcello Musto claims a renewed relevance for the late work of Marx, highlighting unpublished or previously neglected writings, many of which remain unavailable in English. Readers are invited to reconsider Marx's critique of European colonialism, his ideas on non-Western societies, and his theories on the possibility of revolution in noncapitalist countries. From Marx's late manuscripts, notebooks, and letters emerge an author markedly different from the one represented by many of his contemporary critics and followers alike. As Marx currently experiences a significant rediscovery, this volume fills a gap in the popularly accepted biography and suggests an innovative reassessment of some of his key concepts.
