Timoci Tavatavanawi is the Fijian powerhouse who has quickly become the most destructive ball carrier in Rugby. The man is an absolute nightmare to tackle with his combination of power and leg drive and just the physique which is has hard as rock. I t was awesome to get the man they call Jim on the share his journey from growing up in a Fijian village to playing for Tasman Mako, Moana Pacifica and the Highlanders. He talks about the importance of family and the Fijian community support and how important it is to give back to the community. Jim also talks about a range of topics including his key to bulking, his mother's surprise visit, to watch him play, why he hasn't played for Fiji yet, the role of religion in his life, and his future goals. I'm so glad to be able to get Jim on What a Lad, he's a great character of our game who has an inspiring story and I hope this episode inspires many especially young Fijians out there to chase their dreams. Will Jordan is one of those rugby players who is just a joy to watch. He's fast, he's got all the skills and of course he scores plenty of tries. His strike rate speaks for itself, having scored 31 tries in 31 games for the All Blacks at international level and he's quickly approaching 100 if to add on his Tasman Mako and Crusader ones as well. However as we always hear on these episodes, the rugby professional rugby career is not just all good fun and scoring tries there are always ups and downs to go through with Will himself having had a tough run of late. Last year he suffered an unusual injury which had no time frame and left him struggling in a race against the clock to get back in time for the RWC. This year before the season has even started he's had to go under the knife on his shoulder which has ruled him out for the Super Rugby season. It was awesome to chat to Will about how he has handled some of these harder points in his career, as well as all the incredible things he has done recently including a very strong Rugby World Cup. As you'll hear, Will is one of the easiest guys to have a conversation with, he has a great mind for the game and is just an all round champion lad!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Noah Hotham is one of the most exciting young rugby talents on the planet and it was a pleasure to get him on the podcast and go through the first 19 years of the young mans life. The Tasman Mako and NZ u20 star has burst on to the NZ rugby scene in 2022 and has just signed a 3 year deal with the Crusaders. It's not often kids come straight out of school in the physical shape Noah did but after hearing about his time at Hamilton Boys it now all makes sense. Noah is fit, fast and strong and has an incredible ability to break open a game which was proven in this years Bunnings Cup scoring 7 tries himself. This young man has a massive future in the game and he is an absolute lad. If you enjoy this episode please give it a share, it'd be much appreciated. The Picton prince, Dan Hawkins is a self acclaimed white battler but what he is really most known for is being one of the games great lads. Anyone who has had anything to do with Dan will know what a champion he is and are bound to have some good stories and memories. For those who don't know him well then you're in for a treat with this episode. After living on a boat growing up it's fair to say the life of Dan Hawkins has been an eventful one. He made his Tasman Mako debut as an 18 year old, after a standout club season, all while fighting a court case. There was a huge weight on the shoulders of the young man. Things didn't quite work out with Tasman but a move up to Northland turned out to be the best thing for him. His career took off playing for the Taniwha, where he has became and still is a crowd favourite. He's also spent time with the Melbourne Rebels and Mitsubishi Dyna Boars in Japan where has some good yarns from his time there. It's hard not to like Dan Hawkins, who is such a honest lad and is super grateful for everything that has come his way. This week I'm joined by Tasman Mako co head coach and one of the best butchers going around Dan Perrin and he's maddd! Nothing has come easy for the man known as Piggy, hard work and patience saw him eventually have a successful rugby career, which actually started as one of the original Mako men. He also spent some time at the Crusaders before an opportunity to move up to BOP and the Chiefs came along. It was life after footy which I found really interesting in this one. Working massive shifts to get his Mad Butcher off the ground, while juggling family commitments is not easy. Not to mention the time he has put into his coaching craft on top. Piggy's work rate is super impressive an it's awesome to see him now being the co head coach of Tasman. As you'll hear, Dan is a champion lad who has even offered up a 20% discount at the mad butcher Nelson for what a lad listener, absolute lad. The life after sport transition is something that plays on all athletes minds. It's hard to prepare for and you don't really know what you're in for until you're in it. For Filipo Levi he has gone through his transition and he has put all the valuable knowledge from his experience in to the recently published book, called "Tackle your Success". In this episode, Filipo shares some tips on how to have a successful career change and that doesn't have to been from sport. He talks about some of the challenges he faced and what helped him get through. We also go through the big mans rugby career which saw him play for Otago, the Highlanders, the Black Rams, Ospreys, the Tasman Mako, the Pacific Islanders and of course Samoa. From all those teams he has plenty of good stories that he shares throughout. I learnt a lot from this one and I hope you do too. If you do enjoy this episode, as always please give it a share. James Lowe has had an incredible journey to becoming the Irish International winger! The kid gifted with size, speed and skill, was always going to have a successful sporting career. However, getting there wasn't without some significant bumps in the road. At around 14 years old James was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis, which had him bed ridden on and off for around 3 years. For a kid who was extremely active, it was a very difficult stage in his life. He got through that once he found the right medication and was back on his rugby journey. Although after being the star of the NZ u20 trials, he missed out on selection, which to this day still puzzles him and anyone who trialed that day. He put that aside and put in some big performances for the Tasman Mako, which earned himself a Chiefs contract. His form for the Chiefs was so good, that he was literally on the edge of making the All Blacks for 2 years. He didn't, and then decided to take up a contract in Ireland with Leinster. A fascinating story. Now playing for Ireland on the international stage, it's been an incredible journey from the proud Nelsonian. If you enjoy this episode please give it share. Also thanks to everyone who has tuned in over the year, it's been a pleasure bringing you so many absolute lads! Remember to head over to www.whatalad.com if you're keen to support the podcast.
This week I am joined by not just one great lad on the podcast but two of them! Who better to get on as a duo than All Black 7s stars, key Tasman Mako members and best mates Regan Ware and Andrew Knewstubb. Both lads have joined the Tasman Mako mid season this year after a few outside back injuries and both have had massive impact for the side helping them reach the Bunnings Cup final. Before joining the Mako they have both been a huge part of the All Blacks 7s success, playing big roles for them winning the Commonwealth Gold and an Olympic Silver medal. As you'll hear Stubby and Regs are both great lads who love a laugh and have plenty of good yarns from their time together to date. As always if you enjoy this episode please give it a share and if you're keen to support the podcast head over to www.whatalad.com and get your hands on something from there.
I had such a laugh sitting down with theses NZ 7s lads. Lucky for me, both Stubby and Regan were injury call ups to the Tasman Mako team this year and I got to have a chat with them while they were in Nelson. We talked about the crazy last couple years these guys have had - from the Commonwealth games, World Cup in America and an Olympic Games campaign. This is a great look behind the scenes of the NZ 7s team; but it isn't all serious, there's also a lot of shit talked along the way. Two absolute lads! And I wish these guys all the best for what's next in there careers. Thanks for jumping on! #goyoumako
The NPC Rugby Championship Final can be played in Hamilton this Saturday, thanks to the region's move to level two. The Waikato squad have had to spend six weeks away from home so it'll be a special homecoming for them against Tasman Mako. Waikato Rugby Union CEO Carl Moon told Heather du Plessis-Allan they're pretty chuffed. He says there are still restrictions on how many people can actually attend. “We've been hanging off every announcement for the last six weeks. We've been on a bit of a roller-coaster ride.” LISTEN ABOVE
The recent Moana Pacifica signing and Tasman Mako, Willie Havili joins me on What a Lad this week. Its awesome to see Willie back playing at the level that he is, after taking some time away from rugby to find his love for the game again. The honesty that Willie talks about his struggles in this episode is extremely refreshing. He talks about the pressure that comes with being the younger brother of All Black David Havili and also how hard he found it joining the Blues as a replacement player in his first professional year. However, how he's managed to turn his mindset around rugby is inspiring. He's taken all the pressure off himself by finishing his building apprenticeship and found hobbies outside of the game which has helped massively. There is also plenty of good yarns in this one from his journey so far and as you'll hear Willie is an absolute lad! As always if you enjoy this episode please give it a share and it you want to support the podcast head over to www.whatalad.com
Luca Inch may not be a household name just yet but this lad is without a doubt one of the biggest characters in NZ Rugby. At just 20 years old, the big front rower has had a massive year, having starred for the NZ u20s side and now playing for his beloved Tasman Mako. Not an easy feat for a young front rower but Luca is one of the most promising front rowers in the country and he has a massive future in the game. However what I found interesting was how he has got to where he is. He was a nightmare for teachers during his schooling years but thankfully rugby kept him with a focus. He was also extremely close to pulling out of the Tasman Academy at the start of this year, thankfully he decided to stay. A year later he's playing at the highest provincial level and will soon have a super rugby contract! It's awesome to be able to give you an insight in to some of these future stars personalities and as you'll hear, Luca has plenty of personality! If you enjoy this podcast please give it a share, it all really helps and if you really love the podcast go and get yourself some what a lad merch at www.whatalad.com.

Macca Springer is one of the most promising young rugby talents in the country, having just turned 18 years old and has already made an impact at the Provincial level with the Tasman Mako. It's not often you have players so young, look as comfortable at the next level as Macca has, having already had 3 very good games at for the Tasman Mako. It's refreshing hearing a young player talk about what it's like to be living his dream as a professional rugby player and the heights he looks to reach in his career. I'm certainly looking forward to following Maccas career with interest. He is a player that I'd love to get on again throughout his career as he goes through the ranks because he's not just a talented player but as you'll hear he's also an absolute lad! There's a new TV show about to launch called "Brother Battles". It's a show where some of the most famous brothers in the country go head to head in all sorts of challenges. With the catch being they'll be doing all of the challenges naked. As the man in charge of TV content, I thought who better to call up than Tasman Mako legend and NZ Maori star Jacob Norris. The Norris brothers have had a rapid rise through the ranks the last few seasons so to get them on a National TV, going toe to toe in random challenges, with the likes of the Savea brother and the Barretts would be great to see. As you'll hear Jacob is such a good lad and I hope someone out there can make this show happen one day for him. It's been a long time between pranks but when you have a young lad like Luca Inch around your environment, a prank was never far away. Luca is one of the most promising front rowers in the country, having recently played for the NZ u20s and is also in the 2021 Tasman Mako squad, at just 19 years old. He's also an absolute character, literally always smiling and he is just a real good lad to be around. Anyway for the prank, I knew that he really liked Cory Jane, so I called him up as Darren (Cory Janes mate) from the NZRU to see if I could stay at his house for the weekend. Anyway have a listen, if you enjoy it please give it a share.
Assistant Coach of Tasman Mako James Marshall joins Staffy for a chat about their upcoming season.
He's back! Tom Marshall, the Tasman Mako legend has returned to the province where it all started for him. I was lucky enough to get him around to the What a Lad Studio, to talk about his return and also where he is off to next! Many of you would have already heard Toms journey to the top, in his episode in season 1, which gave us a good chance to get into some detail around his time in Japan. As well as that we discuss in depth about his return to the Tasman Mako! Toey also announces where he is off to next and answers plenty of great questions from you who sent them into the what a lad instagram account. It's always a good laugh getting the brother on the podcast so if you enjoy this episode please give it a share, tag what a lad in it. Any support is very much appreciated!
Youth suicide rates in NZ are out of hand and something needs to be done about it, so it was awesome to get the legend Solomon Alaimalo on What a Lad to openly share what he has been through. Even though he is so called 'living his dream' as a professional rugby player, the stresses and pressure that come with it can at some times be all too much. However the power of opening up and being vunerable is such a powerful tool, as Solomon has learnt through these difficult times. I hope this episode can help anyone out there who is finding life tough to be brave enough to talk about it. Solomon has also had a very successful career, he was a school boy star at St Bedes College before starring in the ITM Cup for Northland as a youngster. He found himself in the Chiefs setup almost straight away and as thing can happen in Rugby, it all happened pretty quick. He's has since had stints with the Tasman Mako and Waikato and he is currently with the Highlanders and the Southland Stags. As you'll hear in this episode Solomon is an absolute lad, who has a massive future ahead of him. It's so awesome to hear where he is at now mentally and I'm excited to see how the next few years go! If you enjoy this episode or you think that there's someone who would benefit from hearing it, please share it with them. It might just help someone who needs it the most. Today's guest on Sit Downs With Searley is an up and coming superstar of NZ footy. He is a Crusader, a Tasman Mako, a former under 20's All Black and in my opinion, a future star in the Black jersey. Will Jordan sitting down with Searley, how good!
