After they complete initial entry training all soldiers are entitled to Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAS) to help pay for food, but many of them have most of it deducted to pay for meals provided in dining facilities (DFACs). Recent investigative reporting by our guest, Steve Beynon, has revealed striking inconsistencies between how much money is taken from soldiers in the form of BAS deductions and how much money is spent on providing those soldiers with the meals they're entitled to. At many of the Army's largest installations more than half of those funds seem to be getting reallocated, and the Army can't even explain where. From "smoke pit conspiracy" to congressional inquiry, this is a problem that many soldiers have talked about for years, but is just now breaking into mainstream media coverage thanks to Steve's work. He joined us on the podcast to discuss what he's found, and we may have even identified more problems live on air...Steve Beynon is a reporter for Military.com based out of the Washington, D.C., area whose detailed investigations have covered urgent issues impacting soldiers. A veteran of the Afghanistan war with over a decade of experience as a cavalry scout, Steve leverages his firsthand military experience to deliver authoritative journalism. In 2023, Military Veterans in Journalism honored him as one of the top veterans in media for exposing a cult scheme that defrauded veterans of their benefits, one of the largest scams ever to target the military community. This accolade includes recipients from the New York Times and Associated Press. The cult's churches were eventually raided by the FBI. His byline has appeared in Politico, Stars and Stripes, Military Times, American Legion Magazine, National Guard Magazine, Fox 19, Cincinnati City Beat, and the Cincinnati Enquirer. He studied journalism and environmental policy at the University of Cincinnati on a GI Bill scholarship.Steve's original story breaking this news published last month in Military.com21 Senators and Members of Congress signed this letter to the Secretary of Defense demanding answers about this situationSteve published a follow up piece discussing the reaction from Congress and some of the feedback from inside the pentagonHere's the DoD's page about BASWe discussed the Army's budget estimates towards the end of the episode, the military personnel (MILPERS) portion of which can be found hereWe also referenced the DoD's Financial Management Regulation, and the subsistence portion is found in Volume 7A, Chapter 25We also referenced two GAO reports:The first was "DOD Should Formalize Its Process for Revising Food Ingredients and Better Track Dining Facility Use and Costs"The second was "Additional Actions Needed to Implement, Oversee, and Evaluate Nutrition Efforts for Service Members"The law that guides most of this is 37 USC 402And finally, the DoD's overarching guidance is found in DoD Directive 1418.05

Dylan Beynon is the founder and CEO of Mindbloom, an at-home psychedelic therapy startup. Dylan has been named a top 25 consumer healthtech executive and one of the 100 most influential people in psychedelics. Mindbloom has facilitated 100,000+ psychedelic therapy sessions since launching in 2019, and is now the largest provider of ketamine therapy in the U.S.Increasing access to Ketamine therapy was one of Dylan's main motivators for starting Mindloom. His family was among the 70% of those living paycheck to paycheck in America, for whom standard treatment would have been unaffordable. Mindbloom is now available in 35 states, accessible to 70% of the U.S. population, and has reduced the cost of treatment by as much as 72% (see linked study). We spoke about the addiction fallacy related to Ketamine, and the comprehensive study Mindbloom published in the Journal of Affective Disorders demonstrating that their methodology delivers significantly better clinical outcomes than traditional in-person clinics, as well as SSRI's, talk therapy, and legacy medications. This is a link to the study.Dylan shared some surprising stats during our discussion:With SSRI's (prozac and lexapro), 47% of people get a greater than 50% improvement in depression symptoms. Talk therapy is closer to 40%, roughly the same as a placebo. In peer reviewed clinical studies across 1250 participants, Mindbloom patients saw clinically significant improvement in symptoms 60% of the time.Mindlboom has shown through clinical research that their patients are also getting a side effect less than 5% of the time, as compared to the 30-50% of patients who experience moderate to severe side effects from SSRI's.We moved from the discussion of efficacy to the topic of reimbursement. Ketamine is generally not reimbursed today for depression and anxiety, with the exception of J&J, which in 2019 got S-Ketamine approved for suicidality and treatment-resistant-depression. Unfortunately, it is still extremely expensive - approximately 13x the cost of generic ketamine.  Dylan's personal connections to depression and SAD are extensive. He lost both his mother and sister to fentanyl overdoses, despite trying every traditional treatment available to try to help them. While Dylan believed that his target customers would be early adopters before starting Mindbloom, he ultimately found that it was people who have struggled with anxiety or depression for a long time. Their average customer today is 41 years old, with more over the age of 57 than in their 20's. We spoke of some of the other potential causes of the mental health crisis in the U.S. Among them, the poor metabolic health of the average American, which is getting worse.  Finally, we discussed Dylan's learnings across three companies about how to build a successful company culture. We touched on the gap between good and great talent, and the false choice between being direct and honest, and being kind. Mindbloom won the Tony Shay award for transformational company cultures, which is a testament to the work environment Dylan and his team have created. Please make sure to check out the Society for HealthCare Innovation's (SHCI) website for more content. Additional links: Chemical imbalance of the brain theory may not be true.

This week, Francis speaks with Steve Beynon (@StevenBeynon) of Military dot com about a recent story he wrote in which a church set up a cult and strong armed veterans into funding it with their veterans' benefits, helped people submit false claims in order to steal their disability funds, and much more. Thank you to our quarterly presenting sponsor, Merck Animal Health Verntures: https://www.merck-animal-health.com/animal-health-ventures/ Poultry Sense: https://www.poultrysenseltd.com/  Ancera: https://www.ancera.com/  For the first half of today's episode you'll hear an interview with Alan Beynon, founder of Poultry Sense. Then in the second half you'll hear from Ancera founder & CEO Arjun Ganesan, who I'll formally introduce a bit late in the episode.  Alan Beynon is a veterinarian in the UK who started Prognostix, which used to be called Poultry Sense, in 2016. As Alan will describe, he saw a lot of opportunity in the use of sensors and data to improve animal welfare and efficiency. Merck Animal Health Ventures invested in the company in 2019 and then ended up acquiring them in 2021. We talk a little bit about that part of Alan's story as well. Connecticut-based Ancera is a pioneer in microbial-based risk assessment and monitoring solutions. So what does that mean? They have a proprietary technology that enables near real-time, rapid detection and quantification of microbial threats across all points in the food production process, from farm-to-consumer. If that's still sounding vague, the way I sort of understood it in my mind was that biological interactions are more complex than chemical interactions. So for any type of biological intervention it's important to know more than just did it work or did it not work. We need more data about the dynamics at play, and that's what Ancera does for their customers. Founder and CEO Arjun Ganesan shares details as well as some specific use cases.

Today, Commander Divine speaks with Dylan Beynon, founder and CEO of Mindbloom, a new telemedicine company for clinician-prescribed psychedelic therapy. Dylan has been named a Top 25 Consumer Health Tech Executive, and is one of the top 100 Most Influential People in Psychedelics. Dylan shares his thoughts on the future of psychedelics, how his upbringing inspired him to found Mindbloom, the benefits of ketamine therapy vs. mainstream therapies, and more. Key Takeaways: Why psychedelic therapy? Mental healthcare is the #1 public health crisis in the United States. Yet when you dig into the clinical research around existing treatment options, they just aren't good enough. SSRIs only work 40-47% of the time, and over 50% of people have severe side effects. Plus, it takes 6-8 weeks to work, if it works at all. At-home ketamine therapy gets immediate results 80% of the time, with less than 5% of clients having mild side effects like nausea. How does ketamine therapy work? Patients are sent a flavored ketamine tablet that absorbs directly into the bloodstream. You keep the tablet under your tongue for 7 minutes while listening to a guided meditation. Then, you spit it out and go through a guided therapy session with a provider via video chat for about an hour. How can we make psychedelic therapy mainstream? By radically increasing access to treatments and creating a product that gives people better outcomes and experiences. In order to see widespread adoption of psychedelic therapies, we need to do 3 things: 1. Educate and make it approachable for people since it's so stigmatized; 2. Make it less expensive so more people can afford it; 3. Use telemedicine to make it accessible to people no matter where they live. What does the future of psychedelic therapy look like? Assisted psychedelic therapies are growing rapidly. Oregon recently passed a law that has started the process to enable the prescription and administration of therapeutic medical psilocybin. Therapeutic MDMA is just about a year out from FDA approval. The Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) has also been working on psychedelic advocacy, legalization, and medicalization for over 50 years. It's all happening, and Dylan believes that psychedelic therapies will eventually overtake existing treatment options as the predominant treatment.
