In this episode of the EY CFO Outlook podcast, Thelma O'Driscoll, CFO of the IRFU joins host Jonathan Healy to talk about her diverse career path, her passion for growing male and female rugby from the grassroots up, and how the role of CFO enables her to create a strong and sustainable financial foundation for the game.Thelma O'Driscoll's journey into the rugby world was not a direct one. Starting out in the family business, Thelma went on to work in various finance functions across computer manufacturing (Dell), telecommunications, and professional services. This diverse financial background has proven to be a solid foundation for her current role as CFO of the IRFU. And diversity has been a strong theme during Thelma's time in the male-dominated world of professional rugby. Having been the only female around the leadership table when she first joined in 2016, the organisation has since made huge strides, with 40% of the IRFU Union Committee now comprising female colleagues. Thelma is also very passionate about growing women's rugby and increasing investment in it. They also discuss:Financial Strategy - The IRFU is a not-for-profit organisation, meaning all revenue is reinvested into the game. Over half of the IRFU's €90m income is distributed to provinces, clubs and grassroots rugby.Challenges in Sports Finance - The IRFU's income varies in cycles, and careful management keeps national teams and grassroots rugby stable. Thelma explains why tough decisions are needed to invest wisely and control spending in order to maintain sustainability.Growing Women's Rugby - Women's rugby is experiencing rapid growth and the IRFU are committed to grow the game further and increase investment. This strategic plan includes decentralising the current model and moving to four contracted provincial women's teams. New sponsors like Goodfella's Pizza are investing in women's rugby, with more to come. The Future of Irish Rugby - At the moment Ireland is at the pinnacle of world rugby, but sustaining its position requires careful financial planning. With a debt-free model, Thelma's goal is to strengthen its finances with modern systems to support all levels of Irish rugby.

Welcome to episode 196 with Rory Lamont, who is a former professional Rugby Union player and the co-founder of CAIM, a health and wellness retreat centre in highland Scotland. During his time as a professional rugby player, Rory played for Glasgow Warriors, Sale Sharks and Toulon.  He has 29 international caps for Scotland and has represented his country in two world cups. Over the years he was plagued by various injuries and concussions and whilst playing against Wales in the 2012 Six Nations tournament, he suffered a career ending leg break. The injury, the surgeries, medical drugs and loss of both his career and identity pushed Rory in a mental and spiritual crisis which took him to the brink of ending his own life. The collapse of his physical and mental health forced Rory to confront himself and he travelled to Costa Rica where he experienced the transformational healing power of the plant medicine Iboga which helped him to identify the changes he needed to make and he began the journey of healing and inner work that would lead him to the work he does now. In this episode Rory guides me through the highs and lows of his rugby career and the injuries that kickstarted the decline in his mental health. We chat about his first experience with plant medicine and how it helped him and we chat about what we can learn from depression, about learning to let go and to be vulnerable, the importance of healing as part of a community and why this work needs to be made more accessible. We also chat about how scary it is to do these things, why men need rites of passage and the role of the hero's journey and we chat about some of the incredible things that Rory has witnessed while holding space and supporting others. It was wonderful to hear Rory's story and how he learned to navigate his struggles.  I can't thank him enough for his openness.  The work he does now feels vital and I came away from this conversation feeling hopeful and inspired. John was a professional rugby player and aspiring triathlete during the off-season when an eight-ton truck hit him as he trained on his bike. Medical experts set his chances at “pine or mahogany” and told the family not to expect him to make it through the day. John made it through that day. When he emerged from the coma, he asked about his bike, which had lost significance since he'd now use a wheelchair. Months of treatment and therapy eventually brought him to rebuilding his former self. As he lifted weights with his mate, his father asked, “How far can you go?” Far went well beyond pine box or mahogany. In over twelve hours of swimming, cycling, and wheelchair racing, John became the first paraplegic to meet all the cut-off times as an official finisher of the Kona Ironman. Then he swam the English Channel, the world's busiest shipping lane, in twelve hours and fifty-five minutes. Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, a Paralympic Medal, and learning to walk again well enough to finish the original triathlon for which he was training when the truck met his bike. And there's another challenge on the horizon.

In episode #161 I chat with Author, Coach Educator and Performance Rugby Consultant, Paul Phillips.  We discuss his experiences of developing high performance cultures in professional rugby.  Paul also shares some research on tackling and how to overcome fears with helpful triggers as well as other fascinating insights. Key Learning Points: In Rugby at the lower levels fear is very prominent. Establishing values and behaviours that are coupled with a vision for the team and club is an essential part of culture development. Why can't we generate behaviours before thoughts and emotions? James Clear's two-minute rule in the book Atomic Habits is a good way to start to develop habitual behaviours. The size of the opponent in rugby can be a big factor in activating fear. Visual, kinaesthetic and auditory cues and triggers are helpful in dealing with fear when tackling. Using metaphors such as images of animals or superhero's is a helpful trigger for adults and children. The development of positive relationships between players and coaches is a hallmark of high performing teams. Extrinsic environments are rife largely down to the way messages are communicated from senior staff and coaches in clubs and organisations. Too much focus on external factors results in lower emotional control.
