Many people are back on the bike in eastern Auckland with the launch of the Taniwha Cycleway. It's the latest in a series of cycleways linking the suburbs of Tamaki Makaurau-Auckland.
Fear not the Taniwha, but the great Chinese dragon coming to Auckland Thursday night. The handmade fire-breathing beast spanning the length of two buses has been specially commissioned for this year's BNZ Lantern Festival at Manukau Stadium. The silk-sewn dragon won't be choking up real flames, but more than 500 lanterns will set off into the skies over the next four nights. Tātaki Auckland Unlimited group manager of major events Jep Savali spoke to Corin Dann.
Te Pāti Māori says it is standing in unity with other Māori against a so-called three-headed Taniwha of a coalition government. The Crown is set to be welcomed onto the Treaty Grounds at Waitangi at 11am Monday morning. Te Pāti Māori co-leader Rawiri Waititi spoke to Corin Dann.
Opposition parties, and other iwi, were welcomed at Waitangi over the weekend. Te Pāti Māori was welcomed separately to Labour and the Greens, saying it is joining forces with other mana motuhake-led groups, such as the Kiingitanga to stand in unity against the Coalition Government which they're calling a three-headed Taniwha. Labour's spokesperson for Māori development Willie Jackson spoke to Corin Dann.
The National-led coalition will be confronted by a united front of Māori at Waitangi on Monday. The Crown is due to be welcomed onto the grounds on Monday at 11. Te Pāti Māori was welcomed separately to Labour and the Greens, saying it is joining forces with other mana motuhake-led groups, such as the Kiingitanga to stand in unity against the Coalition Government which they're calling a three-headed Taniwha. Minister for Māori Development Tama Potaka spoke to Corin Dann.
The political year has begun with a sharp focus on the new coalition government and te ao Māori. In the first pod back for 2024, Annabelle Lee-Mather, Ben Thomas and Toby Manhire discuss the messages from the packed Kiingitanga hosted hui ā motu and an unusually politically barbed Rātana. How is Christopher Luxon dealing with questions – and fury – over the Treaty Principles Bill agreed to as part of the deal with Act? Should David Seymour have shown up? And what is NZ First – the third bonce of what was called a “three-headed taniwha” – looking to gain? Also on GBL: Is New Zealand's deployment of NZDF to the Red Sea as part of the retaliatory action against Yemen's Houthis a smart move, and is it plausible to say there is no link to the Israeli action in Gaza? And the resignation of Green MP Golriz Ghahraman returns questions around mental health, abuse and responsibility to the foreground. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Maybe now is a good time to talk about water on our planet. Gardeners often know exactly where the water courses are around the house; this comes in very handy if you want to grow sensitive plants that survive droughts, or if you want to prevent “drowning” or root rot infections on plants that are susceptible to very wet conditions. Next time you fly in an aeroplane, get a window seat! And watch the scenery below… Braided River water systems (in Canterbury) Note the pattern of frequently-used river beds when the water is high; Note also the same pattern of rarely-used river beds … exactly the same patterns! Your garden (and especially your lawn!) will show similar tell-tale signs of how Nature flows its liquids away in high rainfall events. Note how all these channels never make a 90 degree bend (a 90 degree bend is very inefficient in transporting fluids!!) Just look at the vein system in leaves on plants and trees; Look at lungs in your body and the blood vessels in your eyeballs Now look at our plumbing department in all those big shops that provide you with guttering and pipes etc etc. We seem to often think in 90 degree bends! Biomimicry is learning from Nature! For some silly reason “Engineers” think they can be cleverer than Nature and build houses anywhere. Of course, nature throws up “challenges” but Homo sapiens has the brains to find solutions that result in conquering nature so that our bizarre population growth can be accommodated in just about any habitat. Many will remember the 2005 floods that destroyed dozens of homes in Matatā (Bay of Plenty). Dan Hikuroa tells a lovely story about the Taniwhā and he illustrates that nicely with the “sweeping tail” that changes direction in time. The river bed that comes out into the sea at Matatā has had many courses over the past hundreds of years and those courses looked exactly like the pictures of braided rivers. Maori knew how far that “sweeping tail” of the Taniwha could reach and therefore never built the marae anywhere near the danger zone. I think it's time to take note of Ancient Knowledge, as well as Learning from Nature See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In Māori mythology, taniwha are large supernatural beings that live in deep pools in rivers, dark caves, or in the sea, especially in places with dangerous currents or deceptive breakers (giant waves). They may be considered highly respected kaitiaki (protective guardians) of people and places, or in some traditions as dangerous, predatory beings, which for example would kidnap women to have as wives.Get tickets to our live show!https://thesugarclub.com/tc-events/monster-fuzz-podcast-live/Get 20% off + free shipping with the code FUZZ at manscaped.com. The Picton prince, Dan Hawkins is a self acclaimed white battler but what he is really most known for is being one of the games great lads. Anyone who has had anything to do with Dan will know what a champion he is and are bound to have some good stories and memories. For those who don't know him well then you're in for a treat with this episode. After living on a boat growing up it's fair to say the life of Dan Hawkins has been an eventful one. He made his Tasman Mako debut as an 18 year old, after a standout club season, all while fighting a court case. There was a huge weight on the shoulders of the young man. Things didn't quite work out with Tasman but a move up to Northland turned out to be the best thing for him. His career took off playing for the Taniwha, where he has became and still is a crowd favourite. He's also spent time with the Melbourne Rebels and Mitsubishi Dyna Boars in Japan where has some good yarns from his time there. It's hard not to like Dan Hawkins, who is such a honest lad and is super grateful for everything that has come his way. Jordan has a kōrero with Blues and Northland representative, Josh Goodhue. The lock kicks the show off talking about the injury he picked up in his side's big result against the Crusaders and their mindset before taking it back to his childhood in Kawakawa (14:37). Unlike most promising schoolboys, he took an unconvetntional route out of high school and spent time in England with the Worcester Warriors academy (22:27). After finishing up overseas he signed with his beloved Taniwha where after two seasons he was back in Auckland for Super Rugby. What isn't common knowledge is Goodhue turned down the first contract offer from the Blues a year earlier, revealing he wasn't quite ready at the time to make the jump (28:39). He also talks about how Tana Umaga and Leon MacDonald differ as coaches while crediting the former for playing a big role in the success we're seeing today (35:42). It's episode 103 and the Sinister Sisters are going on a road trip. A cryptid road trip that is! In today's group episode, Sarah heads to the Gobi Desert where the only thing you can do is run when you spot the large-intestine looking, acid-spitting Mongolian Death Worm. Then, Erin travels to Kentucky to cover the Hopkinsville Goblins case where a family fended off their home from either an alien attack or an angry Great Horned Owl. Morgan ends the road trip in New Zealand which is home to the Taniwha - powerful sea dragons that are known to eat people, kidnap women, and resemble logs. Jordan Hyland has done it the "old school" way in his words, in terms of his road to Super Rugby. He moved cities to take his opportunities with The Blues and The Highlanders, got an apprenticeship as a drain-layer down South, and started his business Apex Recruitment with his wife Georgia up North. One of his biggest "mistakes" was playing a game of footy, when he didn't need to when he was on the cusp of possibly making the NZ Schools team.Hear how he has been dealing with COVID19 with his business as well as trying to out-run it with his Northland Taniwha rugby team. This is the story all budding rugby players that don't make it straight from school into professional rugby should be listening to.Make sure you do!Proudly sponsored by Viktual+

This week, it is a warm welcome back to Australian fortean researcher Tony Heal who takes us a on a globe trotting monster hunt. Tony opens his files from 50 years of research and investigation to cover a country whose cryptids are hardly known of, New Zealand. Tony takes on the search for tales of the Moehau, the islands own hairy man, the fearsome Taniwha, which inhabits waterways, the towering Moa and the frankly terrifying Haast Eagle, which preyed on the Moa. One provincial rugby CEO has explained why he has backed a controversial deal around the future of New Zealand rugby. New Zealand Rugby's 26 provincial unions have voted unanimously in favour of the proposed Silver Lake deal at the Union's AGM in Wellington.NZR has agreed to selling a 12.5 percent stage in the Union's commercial rights to the US technology investment giants for $387.5 million. However the deal can't pass yet due to continued opposition from the Player's Association.Northland Rugby Union CEO Cameron Bell told D'Arcy Waldegrave that there was a lot of "hearty debate" between the unions."There was agreement that on the balance the overall deal was very strong and compelling because of what it gives back to our grassroots."He says that Covid forced all the unions to "cut their cloth" in a sustainable way, so the money did not sway the deal for them as it was more about the community. Bell says that he hope greed is not behind the opposition from the Players' Association. With President Joe Biden announcing the forthcoming withdrawal of ground troops from Afghanistan, the West’s 20 year war in Afghanistan is drawing to a close. Allan and Darren open this week’s podcast with a discussion of whether this is the right decision, and what lessons we should take from this decades-long conflict. The episode then turns to a busy week in bilateral relations with China for both New Zealand and Australia. Kiwi Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta gave her first major speech on China, and followed it with some controversial comments (in Australia, at least) about the expansion of the remit of the Five Eyes intelligence grouping. Meanwhile, the Australian government used purpose-built legislation to cancel two memoranda of understanding between the Victorian state government and the Chinese government on the Belt and Road Initiative – to Beijing’s predictable displeasure. Does this past week reveal a split in the two countries’ approach to China? What is the logic of each approach? Finally, Japan’s Prime Minister Suga met with Joe Biden at the White House, with China front and centre of the discussion—what are the major takeaways? We thank AIIA intern Dominique Yap for research and audio editing, and thanks also to Rory Stenning for composing our theme music. Welcome to Season 2 of Dragonfly Tales, a story podcast for children of all ages. We hope you have enjoyed some holiday fun where you are! This episode, we welcome storyteller Sef Townsend to the podcast. Sef has spent many years animating children and adults through the medium of story, language, rhythm and song and he is equally at home in a nursery school; in the family atmosphere of a local festival; or at a national museum. Recent work has taken him from shantytown schools in South Africa to the British Museum; from the Korean Traditional Performing Arts Centre to remote villages in the West Bank.In the last couple of years he has shared stories, given workshops and conducted his own research in Belgium, China, Italy, Argentina, and Chile, as well as writing ‘London Folktales for Children’, with colleague Anne Johnson, and their ‘London’s River Folktales for Children’ will be published by The History Press early next year.If you want to find out more about Sef, visit his website HERE.Our story is from Aotearoa New Zealand and is an old Maori myth. This week Bri & Ber take their curiosity to New Zealand and learn about the Taniwha! They learn about this creature's origins, it's duality of protector and predator, and it's effects on pop culture today. As well as quickly learning why Bri wouldn't last having a monster hunting show.
Wellington Paranormal's spooky second-season opener is nominated by Steve for Halloween month 2020 and his job is to convince Jeffers that the New Zealand comedy cops can save the day. This fresh mockumentary sitcom from the minds of Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi has officers Minogue and O'Leary (led by Sgt Maaka) trying to solve some coastal disappearances, and finding the mighty Taniwha ... the 'not Ness monster!'
We're not dead! We're just really tired and/or busy, so here's an episode to that effect.Seb and Sarky finally manage to get some time to chat after possibly the Longest Christmas Ever, and we DO manage to talk a little bit about the Taniwha (Pronounced "TAN-ee-fa"), although as Sarky is trying to also keep an 11-week old puppy from chewing his things, dogs feature rather more than was planned...
What is the mythical Taniwha? I'm Colton, from Ripleys.com, and this is your Weird Minute.
Every country in the world. Every culture in the world, has their stories of unexplained monsters. Monsters that can be very dangerous to humans, malevolent, nasty. Also of others who are more benevolent, even protective of groups of people they see as under their care. But are these stories merely myths and legends? Or do they in fact, have a basis in reality? In this episode we explore a very well known New Zealand monster, called the Taniwha. Even New Zealand children can tell you stories about the Taniwha that inhabit our oceans, our waterways. That dwell in caves high in the back country mountains. We hear people's actual experiences with these beings, historical and recent.... Including one my own mother had as a teenager with a group of friends in the mighty Waikato river. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/walking-the-shadowlands/message
