The rail-enabled Aratere Interislander ferry will be retired this year to make way for port redevelopment at Picton. Transporting New Zealand chief executive Dom Kalasih spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
KiwiRail admits it may be helping out its competition by reducing its Interislander fleet to two. Aratere will be retired when demolition begins on its decaying dock in Picton late this year or early next, to add infrastructure for new ships. Two new ferries are due in 2029. KiwiRail Chief Executive Peter Reidy told Mike Hosking some passengers may opt now to travel with Bluebridge. He says capacity is spread between the companies when one faces an issue. Interislander is reducing its Cook Strait ferry fleet from three to two. The Aratere will retire when demolition begins on its decaying dock - late this year or early the next - to add infrastructure for new ships. Two new ferries are due in 2029. KiwiRail's Adele Wilson says it would've cost about $120 million to have an interim dock. "The idea of the temporary wharf is one of those things that is not possible if we want to bring this project in on budget and on time and at a level that's affordable." The Rail Minister says any supply chain interruptions caused by the Interislander reducing its Cook Strait ferry fleet can be handled. Aratere will be retired when demolition begins on its decaying Picton dock late this year or early next, to add infrastructure for new ships. It's KiwiRail's only rail-enabled ferry. Winston Peters told Ryan Bridge it won't have an impact on the amount of freight KiwiRail is moving. He says it will be supplemented by added shipping around the coast and a re-formulated programme. We know airfares are expensive, right? Everybody, and I mean everybody, I know who's booked flights recently has made the comment that an overseas flight is cheaper than flying just about anywhere around New Zealand – especially to the provincial centres. Easter was huge in terms of airfares, but even on your normal everyday Wednesday morning, flying to Timaru, flying to Tauranga, it's going to set you back a fortune. We've been complaining about Air New Zealand's pricing now ever since we could get back in the air again after Covid, but what can we do? Air New Zealand says its experienced more cost inflation in the past three years than was typically seen in a decade, with Covid, a weak New Zealand dollar, and geopolitics all to blame. Richard Thompson, Air New Zealand's Chief Financial Officer says their costs over the past 3.5 years have gone up by roughly 30%. Domestic airfares on average have gone up by around 24%, so they're trying to absorb the costs, they say. He argues that flying is still a relatively affordable way to get around the country, with every $400 or $500 fare, he says, there are thousands of examples of $129 fares or even $99 fares. He said I was speaking with someone before Christmas who wanted to get from Timaru to Napier. They were paying $600 or $700 one way. But what's the alternative? You drive to Picton. It'll cost you $100 in gas. If you take the ferry across, that's another $250 or $300. Then another $50 or $60 in gas to get to Napier. He said driving isn't cheap either. But now the government's getting in on the act. Associate Transport Minister James Meager is not ruling out underwriting the expansion of small regional airlines to help maintain routes and keep the price of flying competitive. But truly, the thing is we simply do not have the population base to support viable competition. How many airlines have tried and failed to establish themselves in the market? Just thinking back, in the last couple of decades, Freedom Air, Kiwi Air, and Ansett - they came, they tried, they failed. Don't get me wrong, competition is a good thing. We do have Jetstar, bless them and where they fly, you'll generally find the routes are the most competitive in terms of airfares, and the most reliable – because let's not forget about reliability. And I don't think that's a coincidence. I'm supposed to be flying to Tauranga in a couple of weeks for the day, for a job. And I'm supposed to be flying down on Saturday morning and flying back on Saturday evening. I have absolutely no confidence that that will happen. None. I mean, I hope it does, because there's a film crew down there and it will be a costly exercise if I fail to make it. I'm not planning anything for that particular Saturday night because the last time I flew to Tauranga, I got down there fine and then sat for just under 7 hours in the regional lounge waiting for a plane that never came, or it didn't come for a very, very long time. And yes, you can drive, but it's a horrible drive. But what do you do? It's a horrible drive or you accept that there's a very real chance that the plane won't take off when it says it's going to. Why, though, is the government interfering in the market? I found it really interesting that successive governments, Labour and National have wanted to tinker with privately owned businesses like supermarkets, and petrol companies, and banks, and now the airlines. They want to sort of tweak and fiddle around to try and bring prices down and make things more competitive, and it's all about the consumer and you know. Fabulous. Why don't they bring down the price of power? That's something they do control. The governments are in charge of that. Not everybody flies, we all use electricity. It is what it is. It's expensive to run an airline. Really expensive now in the wake of Covid and it's all been outlined as to why it's so expensive. Flying is expensive. We know that. We baulk at paying the prices if we can. They will allow some subsidies if you're going for a funeral, if there's humanitarian reasons for getting somewhere quickly. Air New Zealand can allow for cheaper airfares, but ultimately, do we want the government, that is the taxpayer, subsidising competition in the aviation industry? I wouldn't have thought that was a good use of taxpayer money. Why on Earth should other taxpayers who don't fly, subsidise those who want to flit off to Hawkes Bay or Queenstown for a jolly. I just don't see why the government should be interfering with the business of flying planes. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

More than a year after work came to an abrupt halt when the government cancelled the previous mega ferries contract - Picton residents are pleased to hear there will be two new Cook Strait ferries, but they aren't convinced that they'll be any cheaper. It's also still not clear what exactly the infrastructure work in Picton will involve, or when it will get underway again. Samantha Gee visited the port side town.
Four more years. That's how long we're going to have to wait for KiwiRail's new interisland ferries. But I reckon it will turn out being longer than that. The Government says it will be December 2029. By then, we will have had two elections. But I don't think it will happen in that timeframe, because I listened this morning to someone who knows a bit about this. Mark Thompson's his name. He was in charge of the Government's ferry ministerial advisory group. He reckons the Government is a bit on the optimistic side, thinking the ferries can be here in four years' time. He was talking this morning about decarbonisation within the maritime sector creating huge, worldwide demand for new ships. As he puts it, he thinks the Government will need its spinnaker up and calm seas to meet the deadline, because of what's happening internationally. Spinnaker up and a calm sea. A wing and a prayer. Fingers crossed. Sounds exactly like the way we do infrastructure here in New Zealand, doesn't it? I thought Mark Thompson sounded pretty unimpressed with the announcement. That will be because the Government has ignored his committee's advice to not go with ferries capable of carrying rail wagons. His advice was that ferries that could only carry trucks would be cheaper. But Winston, of course, was all-for ferries that can carry rail wagons from the get-go. So maybe Mark Thompson's nose is out of joint a bit. But I'm listening to what he has to say. Because he's the guy who looked into this whole ferry thing after Finance Minister Nicola Willis pulled the plug on the former Labour government's iReX project. Winston Peters isn't buying any talk about delays though and says the new ferries will be here by the end of 2029. But when you dig further into his announcement yesterday, you see that he's talking about the ferries being no frills, on one hand, but also saying that many of the costs he's cutting will need to be paid for somehow in the future. And these are the costs for the on-land facilities at Picton and Wellington – which he's suggesting will have to be covered by the ports themselves. He's saying that investment is needed at Picton, but he reckons the facilities in Wellington have got another 30 years in them. Again, doesn't that sound so familiar when it comes to infrastructure in this country? “We can get away with what we've got for a bit longer” – the same for the ferries themselves. The ones that keep clapping out. As for the new ships - if we do end up competing with the rest of the world for new vessels because of a global influx of orders, we could end up waiting more than four years. That's why I'll believe it when I see it. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Minister-in-charge has promised Interislander's ferries are safe until our new ones arrive. The Government's announced specifications for two ships - rail enabled and larger than the current pair - for roll out by Christmas 2029. Picton's port infrastructure will be replaced, but money will be saved by modifications and refurbishment in Wellington. Previous plans were canned in 2023, after cost blowouts. Minister for Rail Winston Peters says KiwiRail's given him an overview of the existing ships. "They are very confident that these present utilities are going to be capable of going well past 2029." Winston's great rail solution is now revealed: it's just like KiwiRail's iReX but cheaper. The boats are still big and they're rail enabled but the portside infrastructure is more reasonable. And that's always been the thing. The original boats were a good deal, but the kicker came portside. KiwiRail was under the belief that the project had to be future proofed. This was something that had to last 50 years - a type of thinking that New Zealand hasn't done often. So, the Ferrari was not the boat, it was the ports. Now Winston says Picton needs a big revamp. But the earthquake prone Wellington port just needs a revamp. In an ideal world this is not ideal. But it is, as Winston says, pragmatic. I know people involved with the original iReX deal on the Government side. And when this story first broke, they told me that KiwiRail shouldn't come to the Government expecting an open cheque book. And he was right. The original iReX deal was a good deal, and the one that we should aspire to. But as the Government keeps telling us, now is not the right time for aspirational long-term planning. But if not now, when will we ever do anything right first time? And while this deal looks like a saving short term, will we end out paying more long term? The upshot is that we have ferries coming and they're less likely to sink than the ones we already have. That's about it - we're right back to where we were 30 years ago. I've always wanted to do an episode like this because it is not directly about wine but rather, about aromas almost exclusively. Anne Du Bois is an aromatherapist and perfumer who extracts her own scents and essential elements from botanicals to create a huge array of products from perfumes, essential oils, soaps, lotions, and salts, which is only a small amount of the things that Anne offers in her store. She oversees the production of all of it personally and is passionate about how aromas, and the ingredients that go into producing them, can impact our lives and our health. I have been to the County many times in the past few years and only noticed her store on Main Street this past November on my last visit. I was walking down the street when suddenly I smelled the most amazing things walking past the door to one of the shops. Walking into her store is like immersing yourself in beauty. I probably spent about a half hour there just smelling everything I could as well as reading the stories on some of the packaging, part of some amazing marketing that she's created on the packaging of her carefully crafted scented products. Confusion over who was in charge took hold among those tasked with responding to the grounding of the Aratere near Picton. Marlborough's harbourmaster has today released his report into the grounding on the 21st of June, when 47 people were aboard, Samantha Gee reports.
The lords of toasties have taken Picton and its many transit visitors by storm.
Day 70 of my Around the World Ride: I rode 134 miles (216 km) from Mount Lyford to Picton, New Zealand.
Episode 294: On the evening of December 21, 1883, near Bloomfield, Ontario, visitor Peter Lazier was murdered by two intruders at the farmhouse of Quakers Gilbert and Margaret Jones. The community, deeply affected, quickly organized a search. They traced footprints in the snow, leading to Joseph Thomset and the Lowder family's homes near West Lake. By the next day, Joseph Thomset and brothers David and George Lowder were arrested and charged with murder. The legal process moved rapidly. The coroner's inquest began the next day, followed by formal proceedings within a week. The trial, held at the Prince Edward County Courthouse in Picton just five months later, suggested the motive was robbery, aimed at stealing the $555 Gilbert Jones earned from selling hops. George Lowder and Joseph Thomset were found guilty of murder and hanged in June of 1884. Many felt justice was served, but others believed the law got it wrong, acting hastily without sufficient evidence. At the moment, the ships go through the relatively narrow and winding Tory Channel which cuts about 30 minutes off the voyage between Picton and Wellington. IN THIS EPISODE: The story of serial killer Ronald G. Simmons from the audiobook, “Murderous Minds, Vol2” by Ryan Becker. (Weekend Murder Spree of Ronald G. Simmons) *** Long before the disastrous Philadelphia Experiment, partially based on Nikola Tesla's technology, Tesla is rumored to have discovered by accident the secrets of traveling through time and the inherent dangers of tampering with the cosmic framework that governs the laws of time and space. (Nikola Tesla's Secret Time Travel Experiments) *** Four friends get lost on a country dirt road, and try to find their way back following what turns out to be a phantom vehicle. (Ghost Car of Picton) *** In the 1800s seven nuns set up a school for girls, and when they added a chapel to that school, what many thought was a miracle occurred in the construction of the chapel stairs. (The Legend of the Loretto Chapel Staircase) *** Police officers and first responders share their own experiences with the supernatural. (Paranormal 911) *** I'll share the very dark and classic creepypasta “Holes” by S. R. Underschultz. (Holes)SOURCES AND REFERENCES FROM THE EPISODE…The story of Ronald G.
