"The best thing that can happen to you is to have all your plans get blown up because then you learn how you react to that."   Last week, Tracksmith announced it was adding two members to its team: professional athletes Mary Cain and Nick Willis. But Nick and Mary aren't just figureheads for the brand or sponsored athletes. They're full-time, salaried employees. On this episode, Lee Glandorf, head of communications at Tracksmith, shares the behind-the-scenes making of those deals, and talks about what hiring Nick and Mary means for both them and for the brand. She also explains why now — in the midst of a global pandemic — was the right time to make these moves. Lee is a former Yale University rower turned runner, who also shares her running story and talks about how, as someone who thrives on lists and plans, she's adjusting to life right now and finding ways to connect with the community.   What you’ll get on this episode: How Lee is handling this time as a self-proclaimed “control freak” (6:00) How Tracksmith pivoted strategies and plans at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic (12:00) All about Tracksmith’s decision to hire professional runners Mary Cain and Nick Willis earlier this month (16:30) How Lee fell in love with running (33:00) How Lee got her job at Tracksmith (42:50)   What we mention on this episode: On the Job with Taylor Ritzel, Content Acquisition at Netflix Run Free Grand Prix "Mary Cain Announces New Role at Tracksmith," via Women’s Running "To Run My Best Marathon at Age 44, I Had to Outrun My Past," via Wired   Follow Lee: Instagram @leeglandorf   Follow Ali: Instagram @aliontherun1 Like the Facebook page Join the Facebook group Twitter @aliontherun1 Support on Patreon Blog Strava   Listen & Subscribe: Apple Podcasts Spotify SoundCloud Overcast Stitcher Google Play   SUPPORT the Ali on the Run Show! If you’re enjoying the show, please subscribe and leave a rating and review on Apple Podcasts. "I was just like, ‘Oh my god, I’m in Hollywood! This was meant to be!'"   Taylor Ritzel has quite the resumé: She was a collegiate rower at Yale University who went on to win Olympic gold in rowing at the 2012 games. Today, though, Taylor has traded her oars for the Hollywood life. She works at Netflix, in nonfiction series content acquisition. On this episode, she talks about what, exactly, that means, and what it's like working on shows including Cheer, Queer Eye, and Tidying Up with Marie Kondo.   Thank you to Tracksmith for sponsoring the On the Job series on the Ali on the Run Show! The Art of Breath Clinich (From the Power Speed and Endurance webpage - http://powerspeedendurance.com/event/georgia-art-of-breath-clinic/) If we don’t breathe, we die. Although we all know this simple fact breathing remains the most underutilized component of health and human performance. The Art of Breath (AoB) is a program developed to give participants an experience based understanding of how breathing can affect both short term performance and long term health. Through a variety of simple and effective teaching tools we will help illuminate this powerful practice and help you grab this low hanging fruit. The AoB purpose is to help facilitate a deeper understanding of the physiological process so that each person can ultimately tailor their own breath practice to his or her individual needs. He resides in Virginia Beach, VA with his wife Thomi where they own and operate CrossFit Virginia Beach. In addition to working with the Power Speed Endurance team Rob is also a member of the world renowned MobilityWod staff under the direction of Dr. Kelly Starrett. Rob’s main sport background is youth martial arts including Jeet Kune Do (the philosophies of Bruce Lee), Judo, Muay Thai, and Maphiliindo Silat and Kali. Like many coastal kids Rob grew up surfing and skating as well and developed an affinity for the ocean and Nature at an early age. Rob Wilson is a passionate teacher to the core. Throughout the course of his career as a therapist one thing became abundantly clear; it’s better to teach a person to fish. Without education athletes are left to unknowingly repeat patterns of behavior that may not be pursuant to the actual desired outcome. That is to say the best remedy is often understanding. Rob’s journey is about developing a deeper understanding of human performance to better serve those who wish to actualize their potential. Rob’s underpinning philosophy is borrowed from the tenets of Jeet Kune Do: Research your own experience Absorb what is useful Reject what is useless Add what is specifically your own

I first learned about Brian MacKenzie when I was training for my first Ironman’s and I read his books about endurance and mobility and he changed my concepts about what was possible with running. Basically, pounding out miles just doesn’t work as you get older (and when younger too). But this doesn’t apply to just running…… Brian applies exponential training approaches to optimize human performance; he relentlessly challenges conventions and tests assumptions. Recently I was reacquainted with Brian’s work when I started training with Wim Hof's cold and breathing methods and was looking to see who else was interested in them….. So I reached out to ask him on the show.  Major take – aways from this episode are: How you can change anything with 10 breaths. Using breathing techniques to amplify, deepen and quicken meditation benefits. The power of breath work to stabilize mood regulation and reactive behavior patterns. Co2 adaptation + Integrating breathing, ice and heat. How to activate the Vagus nerve. Importance of diaphramatic breathing. Using breathing to access Flow States. Proper breathing technique for sport, business and life. Mobility – the importance of keeping tissue supple. Eating principles vs fads to follow that Brian coaches people on related to a) Vegetables; b)humanely treated animal protein (not stressed); c) High quality fats. The impact of a) sugar; b) processed foods; c) hydration; d) high quality breads. Must read and listen to Netflix video by Mike Pollan, “Cooked” and In Defense of Food – An Eaters Manifesto. Taking personal responsibility of your health by engaging your doctor. Benefits of getting your genetics tested (Wellness fx). Dumbing down technology so that you can feel again. Mike Rowe on the importance of working opportunities not passion. I have linked up all the show notes on redzonetech.net/podcast where you can get access to Brian’s blog publications.
