Our posture, our breath, the way our feet strike the ground – all tell the story of how we move through life. But how often do we pay attention to this story - or even rewrite it? Today's returning guest on my Feel Better, Live More podcast believes that pain, stiffness and fatigue aren't just things to manage – they're messages. And when we learn to listen to the body with the right lens, we can move better, feel better and even live better. I'm delighted to welcome Lawrence van Lingen back to the show. Lawrence is a highly sought-after expert in biomechanics, bodywork and human performance. Described by Triathlete Magazine as ‘the genius of running,' Lawrence has over 25 years' experience working with elite athletes and everyday people.  He's developed a unique approach that goes beyond traditional methods, blending a deep knowledge of movement, posture and breath to optimise performance and overall well-being. Lawrence works with some of the world's greatest athletes to enhance their performance and help them with so-called ‘untreatable' injuries. His online running workshops have become the backbone of remarkable athletic comebacks, and they've also helped many people worldwide move without pain and with greater enjoyment.  His first appearance back on episode 491 of this podcast really resonated with a lot of listeners, and I'm so pleased to be diving even deeper into his holistic philosophy. In this conversation, we explore a variety of topics, including: The life changing benefits of backward walking The relationship between our stress levels and the way that we move Why most of us are over-breathing and the implications of doing so The true role of the diaphragm – not just for breathing, but also for spinal alignment, emotional balance, and nervous system regulation How modern habits like sitting, shoe-wearing and screen use are affecting us Why your feet are more than just a base – they're a sensory system that guides your balance, posture and power How fascia – the body's connective tissue matrix – influences everything from flexibility to feeling grounded  Why stretching alone often doesn't resolve tightness – and how restoring communication in the body is the real key to lasting change Lawrence's clear explanations and everyday metaphors bring the body's complexity to life. What emerges is a truly empowering message: your body isn't broken, it's just been misunderstood. And with awareness, patience and the right input, it knows exactly how to heal and realign itself. What if I told you that normalising your breathing pattern and walking backwards every day could change your life? My guest this week explains just how this is possible. There are very few people in the movement world who ‘grab' me online and suck me into their world with the quality of their content, but one person who did this a few months ago was this week's guest, Lawrence van Lingen. Lawrence is a highly sought-after expert in biomechanics, bodywork, and human performance. Described by Triathlete Magazine as ‘the genius of running,' Lawrence has over 25 years' experience working with elite athletes and everyday people. He's developed a unique approach that goes beyond traditional methods, blending a deep knowledge of movement, posture, and breath to optimize our performance and overall well-being.  Lawrence works with some of the world's greatest athletes to enhance their performance and help them with so called ‘untreatable' injuries and, his online running workshops have become the backbone of remarkable athletic comebacks and they've also helped many people around the world, move without pain and with greater enjoyment. In order to help more people, Lawrence has created a wonderful online community that includes live and recorded classes where people of all ages and abilities can learn to understand their bodies, move better, and ultimately feel and live better. You can see all details at www.lawrencevanlingen.com. In this conversation, we discuss the intricate connection between breathing, movement, and our overall wellbeing. Lawrence explains how incorrect breathing not only affects our physical health but also impacts our stress levels, anxiety, mood, and even our relationships with others. Lawrence also explains how 3 practices: normalising our breathing patterns, walking backwards and using a flow rope - can prove transformative for so many. These are simple yet powerful techniques that can revolutionise not only how you move, but also how you feel. We explore the fascinating concept of how our bodies store emotions and trauma and how movement can be a powerful tool for release and healing. What I love about Lawrence's holistic approach is how he looks at the whole body as a system, acknowledging that to move well, we need to focus on what's happening ‘upstream' in our lives that could be impacting our physical health. We also touch on some thought-provoking philosophical ideas. Lawrence challenges us to consider whether we're ‘happening to life, or life is happening to us,' encouraging a more active and intentional approach to our movement and overall health. His ‘mastery, not medals' mantra offers a refreshing perspective on achievement and personal growth. For those interested in the technical side of running, we also discuss the phenomenon of ‘super shoes' and their potential benefits. I myself have been doing one of Lawrence's breathing routines that I first learned about on his YouTube channel and have experienced the incredible benefits. And, by the end of our conversation, you'll have the tools to start making positive changes in your own life, too. This episode is not just about running or physical health; it's a deep dive into how we can live more authentically and connect better with our bodies and minds.   Thanks to our sponsors: https://drinkag1.com/livemore http://www.vivobarefoot.com/livemore https://www.essilor.com https://airbnb.co.uk/host   Show notes https://drchatterjee.com/491   DISCLAIMER: The content in the podcast and on this webpage is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. We've been told for years that 120-150 minutes a week of moderate exercise is not only good for our physical health, but also our mental health. Jill is currently a Research Affiliate in the Department of Forensic Psychiatry at the University of Bern and writing mental health-focused articles at Triathlete Magazine and across Outside Media.Today, she and Sara discuss the delicate balance of mixing ultra-endurance training and mental health and ask, "Do the positive effects of exercise stand up through volume and intensity?"They cover:The type of person who tends to get overtrained Drawing the line between healthy and unhealthyThe concept of having an off-season and why it's vital to healthWhat should your mindset be when it comes to exercise? What do we mean by “ultra-endurance culture?”The pitfalls of glorifying and mythologizing ultra-endurance athletes as “heroes”Jill's work in the world of social media and mental healthWhat do you wish people knew about mental health? As Sara says, “At the end of the day, people go through a lot worse than running a marathon and we have to ask who are the true heroes. How do macronutrients differ from micronutrients? As we age, how do we eat and what do we eat? A common question Lynne gets from clients, "Now I've hit midlife, why are things not working the way they were before? I'm doing the same things but I'm gaining weight & not recovering so quickly with my exercise." Should we go low fat, low CHO, Paleo, etc.? How do we know what we should do. How does mindset affect our fitness and overall health? Jen says, "Something we need to think about when it comes to nutrition is the big picture vs. the next weight loss or goal. There has to be something bigger than just that."   Free Resources from Jen Rulon: 5 Ways to Harden Your Strength: https://view.flodesk.com/pages/62881634cb3b36e4c1694e68 App Store: Jen Rulonapp.com – download for workouts   Connect With Jen Rulon: Website: https://jenrulon.com   Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/coachjenrulon/    Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CoachJenRulonMS/   Twitter: https://twitter.com/CoachJenRulon Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.ph/CoachJenRulon/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzm0858xUwbw-1FS0sk7olA   LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/coachjenrulon/   TEDx Talk: https://jenrulon.com/mytedxtalk   Connect with Lynne: If you're looking for a community of like-minded women on a journey - just like you are - to improved health and wellness, overall balance, and increased confidence, check out Lynne's private community in The Energized Healthy Women's Club. WHAT CAN WE DO TO MANAGE BELLY FAT, TRAIN OPTIMALLY, AND EAT TO NOURISH AND THRIVE THROUGH PERIMENOPAUSE?When it comes to exercise, nutrition and medicine, it has long been assumed that women are just smaller versions of men. Very little research has been done specifically on women in these areas and during menopause specifically. This seems crazy given that women make up about 50% of the population and 50% of the population will experience menopause.! This lack of science-based information often means women are doing the wrong training, eating the wrong food, not reaching their full potential, and/or suffering unnecessary discomfort and pain.Stacy's mission is to help women better understand their bodies and elevate them in research, science, sport, and, ultimately, in life.Stacy Sims, MSC, PHD, is an international exercise physiologist and nutrition scientist, clinician, author, coach, athlete, whoop advisor, entrepreneur in human performance and mum. How Ironman Athlete Michelle Bandur Turned A Bully's Message Into A Movement

From an act of meanness to an act of kindness. A bully's note changed Michelle Bandur's life forever. Michelle Bandur was working as a TV reporter in Omaha when she got a card with a dollar in it from a viewer. The card instructed her to "accept the gift and use it wisely. 50 cents for those bags under your eyes and 50 cents for your big, fat nose. You need the help." It was signed, "A viewer." The note was devastatingly mean and triggered insecurities she'd felt being teased as a kid. That, despite the fact Bandur is an award-winning and accomplished investigative journalist. The reality is female newscasters are frequent targets of physical criticism. Usually, we ignore it. This time, Bandur decided to expose the bully and start a movement to empower young girls. She took the bully's dollar, asked for more dollars from the community and started Ironhawk Juniors Triathlon Club. The club teaches girls 8-14 how to swim, bike and run with the goal of completing a triathlon. It's 100% free, and the club even finds free bikes for girls who don't have one. Bandur never did find out who sent the mean card and dollar. "I do want to say thank you because think of all the girls that we've helped. Think of the message that's out there. Turning, taking a negative and turning it into a positive and uh really helped kind of change the lives of so many people teaching girls how to love themselves, giving them the self-confidence, knowing they can accomplish something that they've set out to do, and they finish it. That's so rewarding and so satisfying. So, hey bully, thanks appreciate it," said Bandur. Bandur's "big fat nose" card resulted in a TED Talk that's been viewed thousands of times and landed her on the cover of Triathlete Magazine. In this Dying to Ask: What receiving the mean card and dollar triggered in Bandur that she hadn't felt in years The hilarious advice her news director gave her when Bandur showed her the note How quickly the Ironhawk Juniors Racing Club came about and how many lives have been changed in the process And we do a lightning round of "Ask Michelle" and get advice on everything from moving across the country in mid-life to feeling confident at any age
