Gus Clemens on Wine explores and explains the world of wine in simple, humorous, fun posts
This is the weekly columnWine has an image problem that is both its biggest asset and its Achilles heal. Wine is the most complex alcohol drink. If you examine wine's consumer base, wine drinkers tend to be older, better educated, upper-middle class or above. The popular image: wine drinkers are old, snotty, rich people. Not an ideal demo if you are a marketeer striving to expand your winery's customer base.Let's admit the basic truth behind the stereotype. Wine is complicated. I don't need to know where the hops or barely or water came from to slam back a light beer. Just put the 18-pack in the cooler and start pulling pull tabs. Most wine drinkers do not approach wine that way.As Baby Boomer wine drinkers began to savor the complexity of wine in the 1980s, words like “terroir” and “new French oak” and “malolactic conversion” and “whole cluster fermentation” and “carbonic maceration” and “sur lie” and “bâttonage” and “solera system” became part of their vocabulary. Not words typically blurted out by beer Bubbas at the local dive bar during happy hour.As wine appreciation soared beginning in the 1980s, so came slick wine magazines, wine books, wine websites, wine gurus, wine tourism, wine clubs, and states opening up to direct-to-consumer wine sales from an exploding number of winemakers dedicated to quality. Ah, what heady times those were.No trend lasts forever, although it can be argued that after 8,000 years wine hardly is a trend. But the wine world certainly faces headwinds in the 2020s. Wine is not going away, but the intoxicating wine burgeoning of the last 40 years appears to have reached an apogee. And so winemakers have to assess who they are and what their product is. I suggest embracing wine for what it is—complicated, sophisticated, and still down-to-earth enjoyable. Dumbing down will not convince 21-something newbies to spend $18 on a bottle of wine instead of $10 on a six-pack of beer, hard cider, or malt beverage. But when, by happenstance, they experience a quality meal with a quality wine, then comes the “ah-ha” moment. This is what wine is all about.Tasting notes• Domaine Bousquet Malbec, Tupungato Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina 2022: Fresh, crunchy, flagrantly ripe fruit. Simple but decadently indulgent in pleasuring your palate. $10-14 Link to my review• Bonterra Sauvignon Blanc, California 2023: Easy drinker, nice introduction to famously food-friendly sauv blanc. Round, smooth, happily approachable, pleasurable mouthfeel. $15 Link to my reviewLast round: My wife told me: “I never listen to her.” Something like that. I don't recall exactly. I don't pay that much attention to what she says. Call the show and leave a message at 845-330-3410 That's the Dumbing it Down with Dave Dumbline. In this episode #343 from the kitchen table. Dave discusses many topics, and one of them is, if this was your podcast, and it had a lot to do with your life, what would the show title(s) be? Feel free to type your response in the SPREAKER chat box available for free. You can Tweet your response to @dumbwithbdave Email at DumbingitdownwithDave@yahoo.com Or of course call in to the Dumbline at 845-330-3410 Leave a message (clean if possible) and maybe we'll play it on the air. Several of the other topics discussed were about Dave's pragmatism, and does it tend to lean left or right politically, or does he stay down the middle towards the truth all the time? What are people‘s perceptions of Dave's pragmatism? Does Dave have an absolute agenda? Another topic was talking about big Pharma. We discussed big Pharma on television with their gigantic well produced ads.Should they be allowed to advertise on TV? Do they control the narrative? We read listeners comments and give thanks to those who called me personally. This is the third consecutive 1 hour show. Are they too long? Dogs Are Smarter Than People: Writing Life, Marriage and Motivation
And how we've blown off writing maxims to be successfulThere's a feeling among many writers/bloggers/content creators that our brains are too overwhelmed by a high cognitive overload to want to read anything that isn't super quick and fast.I get this. There is a lot of information out there in the world.Short-form content is, they say, the key.Tim Denning describes short-form content as “where you share big ideas, be a little contrarian, drop cliffhangers for your stories, and share who you are. It gives people a taste.”“Many old-school writers want to take a stranger on the street and send them to their newly published book on Amazon. All the reader has to do is give up $15–20 and 15–20 hours of their life,” Denning writes. “None of this works anymore because the internet and all its information have burdened us with a high cognitive load.“Our brains hurt.”So, yeah, we say to hell with that. One size fits all doesn't fit everyone and that comes to readers of everything—books, blogs, news sites, magazines. To say that it does? It's a little depressing and fatalistic.High cognitive load when it refers to writing usually refers to the principles of plain English. What's that? It's just concise sentences. It's active voice. It's anti-jargon.KEEPING IT SHORT AND SIMPLEKeeping it short and simple has often been a dictum of novel writing when it comes to length (make it only 50,000 words, God forbid it hits over 100,000). It's also part of content creation (other kinds) keep the reels and videos to 1 minute or less, the picture books to less than 500 words, and so on.But I've (Carrie, not Shaun) also been lucky enough to go on book tours and listen to readers complain that books are too stripped down, not long enough to get lost in any more. Those specific readers? They don't want short and simple.BLOWING THAT MAXIM OFFWe've built a hyper-local daily paper on the opposite of this thought. We aren't simple. Our articles tend to not be short. Our word choice and sentence structure is though. And we have no short-form content to lure people in. We rarely remember to share our posts on Facebook and Instagram. And when we do? It's never pithy. But despite this (and our complete lack of marketing and despite that there are some amazing and award winning papers in our area already), in two years we've grown to a digital subscription base larger than both the major legacy weekly newspapers in our county with their very large (compared to us) staffs. Our staff of two (the same goofballs you're listening to right now) has written over a million words this year, just on that paper, and our open rate hovers over 60%.We write long. And people? They like it because they get to parse through the information and determine what matters to them when we cover something like a town meeting. We don't decide what matters for them.We trust our readers to be smart, to make their own decisions. So, no, we don't write short. It's something that Heather Cox Richardson (one of the most popular writers on Substack) and Andrew Revkin do, too.Dumbing yourself and your content down? It's not sexy.DON'T BE AFRAID TO BE YOUThe other aspect of this is something Denning agrees with and that it's okay to be you—your weird self, your personal self—in your writing. AI can do a lot of super amazing things, but it can't do that—it can't be personal. It can't be you.So, when you are writing—anything and everything—just be yourself. Think about who you are writing for, yes, but also be true to who you are, too. That's where the magic happens. That's where the communication and the connection happens, too.RANDOM THOUGHT LINKhttps://www.forbes.com/sites/scotthutcheson/2024/12/27/why-leaders-should-add-writing-to-their-leadership-toolkit-in-2025DOG TIP FOR LIFEDon't be concise when it's something you really want to get across for people.COOL PLACE TO SUBMITThe Paris Review Call for Poetry SubmissionsThe Paris Review is a literary magazine featuring original writing, art, and in-depth interviews with famous writers. In this episode of Dumbing It Down With Dave, #337, titled “So long my Kia I'll miss you” amongst various topics, Dave talks about putting his trusted porta-poddy down. It was a 2008 Kia Rio LX and after 329,000 miles it was time to go. It WASN'T the engine. It was the chassis rust and a brake line. Mostly the rust on the chassis. It got really bad and unsafe. The proposed ban on social media for teens has polarised industry and academia with warnings aplenty it could backfire. Ex-Facebook ANZ MD Liam Walsh argues rather than a ban, dumbing down the algorithms, forcing algorithmic transparency through regulation or removing them altogether – could actually be the solution if fears of the effects of algorithmically-generated dopamine addiction and attention-hogging dark patterns on teenage mental health are the primary problem.“If we took that out, how many problems do we have with social?” he says. Walsh warns society has no structures in place to deal with fallout that could land in nine months' time when the Albanese government proposes a new age limit on social media use. “If you take away kids' whole network, how they commune with others, that's kind of a big deal.” Walsh doubts teens will “suddenly start hanging out in the park and helping old ladies paint the fence.”Erica Thomas, Principal at private girls school Kincoppal in Sydney's Rose Bay, agrees teenagers will “seek other things” to fill the void “and that is one concern” but warns there is no time to wait for a protracted legal battle with tech giants in attempts to curtail or open up the algorithms. She sees daily, first-hand, how badly action is required. Across a 30-year career in education, she says social media is “the most damaging influence I have ever seen”.Concentration levels are plummeting with teachers struggling to find a fix, girls are being conditioned to perfectionism from a young age, boys exposed to increasingly extreme violence, toxic influencers and highly sexualised images and bots of girls and young women – and in the last five years, “it's got worse”.Brands have long championed ESG and purpose. But they've been strangely silent on the proposed ban. Katie Palmer-Rose, a social media marketer who has worked with the likes of L'Oreal, PepsiCo and Aldi and now runs influence agency Kindred, thinks many are waiting to see how it plays out. But she says they face a “moment in time where they tend to think very differently about how they show up in social media, how they build communities and connectedness in a digital world that doesn't live in social media,”Production company Finch's Rob Galluzzo and Greg Attwells fully expect legal challenges from tech platforms – who they claim have told staff to “stonewall” 36 Months, the campaign they founded with Nova's Michael ‘Wippa' Wipfli to push for a social media ban for under 16s. Dumbing down algorithms won't cut it, says Attwells. Keeping regulation about health, not tech, and moving fast is key, they suggest – with more backer brands about to be announced. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Dumbing down, published by Martin Sustrik on June 9, 2024 on LessWrong. In past few years I've been blogging in Slovak, that is, downscaling from writing in English, a language with 1457 million speakers to a language with 7 million speakers. From the point of view of the writer, this has been a very different experience. It's not only that for a topic that interests one million English speakers, the equivalent is five thousand in Slovakia, scaling down by factor of 200. It's also that topic that interests 100 English speakers, interests one half of a hypothetical Slovak speaker, that is, nobody. In fact, not everybody reads blogs, so the population in question is likely smaller by an order of magnitude or even two, resulting in even more fractional Slovaks... In other words, the reader population is not as big as to fill in all the possible niches and the writing thus has to become much more generic. It must also be "dumbed down". Not because Slovaks are less intelligent than other nations, but because the scale of the existing discourse is much smaller. While in English, not matter how esoteric your topic is, you can reference or link to the relevant discussion, in Slovak it often is the case that there's no discussion at all. The combination of the two factors above means that you have to explain yourself all the time. You want to mention game theory? You have to explain what do you mean. You want to make a physics metaphor? You can't, if you care about being understood. You want to hint at some economic phenomenon? You have to explain yourself again. And often even the terminology is lacking. Even such a basic word as "policy" has no established equivalent. I had to ask a friend who works as a translator at the European Commission, just to be told that they use word "politika" for this purpose. Which is definitely not a common meaning of the word. "Politika" typically means "politics" and using it for "policy" sounds really strange and awkward. (All of this gave me gut-level understanding of how small populations can lose knowledge. Joe Henrich mentions a case of small Inuit population getting isolated from the rest and gradually losing technology, including the kayak building skills, which in turn made it, in a vicious circle, unable to import other technology. This kind of thing also tends to be mentioned when speaking of dropping fertility rates and possible inability of a smaller global population to keep the technology we take for granted today. Well, I can relate now.) Anyway, it's interesting to look at what kind of topics were popular in such a scaled-down environment. Interestingly, the most popular article (17k views) was a brief introduction to Effective Altruism. I have no explanation for that except that it was a chance. Maybe it was because I wrote it on December 29th when there was not much other content? The readers, after all, judging from the comments, were not convinced, but rather experienced unpleasant cognitive dissonance, when they felt compelled to argue that saving one kid at home is better than saving five kids in Africa. (From comments:) Nice article. I've decided to support charity on regular basis, but here in Slovakia, even if it's more expensive, because I think that maintaining life forcibly in Africa, where it is not doing well, goes against the laws of nature. I can imagine Africa without the people who kill each other in civil wars, who are unable to take care of their own offspring and the country. If someone wants to live there, mine diamonds or grow coffee, they should go there and start life anew, and perhaps on better foundations than the ones damaged in Africa years ago by the colonizers. A series of articles about Swiss political system (all together maybe 10k views). Interestingly, the equivalent in English was popular o...
The Assignment - In the year 2036, we lived differently than ever before. Everything has changed even our education system. It was demonic and stupid. It was brought about by the high echelons of power and we detectives and truth-seekers knew there was a purpose. Dumbing down our world through our educational system was the intention. There was no escaping it. And with this investigation, we were determined to prove it for all to see. Luckily we had much-needed help from a rebellious anonymous group that had the same agenda. Together we all worked to prove that anyone deserved the education of their choosing with no governmental interference. And so it was, America recovered and made it back from the brink of disaster before it changed society beyond repair. **I hope you find these audio episodes interesting and I encourage listeners to do some deep-dive research and go down rabbit holes on the stories told in these episodes. The "real truth" is there. **All in story form, these episode topics have the truth within the storyline but please note that I took liberties and creative license with the names, people, pseudonyms, places, and events for a better storytelling experience. Stani Kulechov is the Founder of Aave and Lens protocols. In this episode of The Edge Podcast, we interview this legendary DeFi founder. Having built Aave into one of the world's largest DeFi protocols with an all-time high of $30B TVL, Stani made the bold move in 2021 to jumpstart another wildly challenging Web3 startup that would deliver a self-sovereign alternative to social media–called Lens. Lens is a decentralized composable social layer. You can think of it as "not your keys, not your follower graph" and it has proven to be the most foundational lego in the decentralized social stack jumpstarting a Web3 alternative to apps like Twitter and YouTube. Stani joins us to talk about their recently announced scaling solution for decentralized social called Momoka. David called it Kellen Moore's best game calling plays this year and wonders if Zeke Elliott's absence made it easier. [19:22] Evan says the Rangers have several ways to go with Martin Perez, including a one-year qualifying offer. Today, we're talking about what not to do as an ABA practitioner. We're going to review our top five don't-dos as a professional in the field. When we were preparing, it was difficult to narrow it down to just five, but we discuss what we believe are the most important things to keep in mind. It's also difficult to talk about what not to do without speaking about what you should do, so we'll offer you some tips to help you in your jobs.First, you want to avoid using technical jargon. Dumbing things down and putting concepts into practical language isn't just beneficial to parents, but also to newly minted RBTs and BCBAs. Second, avoid being condescending. Speaking too technically can sometimes carry an “I know more than you do” feel, especially if you're in someone's home and notice right away what needs to be fixed. Third, it's so important to be yourself and bring who you are into your job. Our fourth don't is that we shouldn't be working to reduce a problem behavior without introducing a replacement skill. And lastly, don't number five is to remember you don't know everything. We can always learn from the families we work with, along with our colleagues. What's Inside:What not to do as an ABA professional.Tips on how to turn our top five don'ts into dos.Why it's important to be yourself.Mentioned In This Episode:HowToABA.com/joinHow to ABA on YouTubeFind us on FacebookFollow us on Instagram
