“I've constantly learned from the people I'm around. … I feel like you learn so much from, not just coaches, but I think from training partners. And I think that in itself is so valuable compared to just training by yourself, following a program. … It might work for some people, but that doesn't work for me. I need to be around other people.” Multi-year CrossFit Games athlete and business owner Lauren Fisher joins the show to share her experience as a professional CrossFit athlete, competing with Annie Thorisdottir and CrossFit Reykjavik, and starting Grown Strong. Fisher grew up playing team sports and did her first CrossFit workout in 2008 after her brothers convinced her to train with a coach at a local gym to help with her basketball training. The intensity, competitiveness with herself and the time cap, and enjoyment left Fisher hooked. By 2012, Fisher qualified for the Northern California Regional — her first — and placed 12th overall. A year later, she competed at the CrossFit Games with team CrossFit Invictus, finishing seventh. Fisher went on to compete at the CrossFit Games six more years — four as an individual and three on a team. On today's episode, Fisher opens up about starting CrossFit and her evolution through the sport. She shares memories and wisdom gained competing and training alongside more experienced athletes as an individual, competing as a team member, and working with experienced coaches and athletes in the space to improve her training. Fisher also gets candid about the demands of having a social media presence and the challenges of balancing expectations from sponsors, growing her brand, and staying connected to her fans and community. Tune in to find out how Fisher and two-time Fittest Woman on Earth Annie Thorisdottir connected about becoming teammates for the 2022 CrossFit Games, how her business Grown Strong is designed to help women grow mentally and physically stronger, and how Fisher is gearing up for the 2023 season. Although she lives in San Diego, Fisher is currently training at Training Think Tank and will compete at the North America West Semifinal as an individual on May 25-28.

In this week's episode of Healthspan Academy, I sat down with entrepreneur and Former Elite Gymnast, Carl Paoli, as we spoke about a range of fitness topics and their impact on longevity. We discussed aesthetic vs functional gymnastics and working through progressions. Carl also detailed his take on emotional fitness as the foundation for developing health and longevity. Carl Paoli is a Swedish-American Life Teacher who grew up in Spain as an Elite gymnast, where even as a kid, his passion for physical activity led him to delve into action sports such as snowboarding and wakeboarding. It was gymnastics, however, that shaped his discipline for hard work, determination, and now his professional career. Throughout his career, he trained and competed on the national circuit for over fifteen years as an Elite Gymnast and achieved various honors, including a National Gold Medal for Vault. After retiring from gymnastics, Carl graduated with a bachelor's degree in Environmental Science from the Universidad Miguel Hernández de Elche specializing in Genetic Engineering and Coral Reef Ecology. Afterward, he pursued a career in Marine Biology. Even though he found work relevant to his studies, his mind was never far from sports and fitness. It was Carl's entrepreneurial spirit that brought him back to the US in 2004 where he pursued his passion for coaching, led him to find CrossFit, and launched GymnasticsWOD in 2010. Together with Jami Tikkanen, he assisted in coaching Annie Thorisdottir to win back-to-back CrossFit Games titles in 2011 and 2012. Carl also became a member of the Ownership Group of STRIKE MVMNT, a footwear and apparel brand where he currently serves as their Global Ambassador. Shortly thereafter, he used his background in gymnastics and fitness to write his New York Times Bestselling book “Free+Style”. Since the launch of GymnasticsWOD, Carl has virtually and physically coached thousands of athletes around the world through the website and by way of his Freestyle Connection seminars. He is also the founder of Freestyle Connection - a Media and Digital Learning company based in San Francisco, California established in 2012 dedicated to helping people design a life worth living through fitness and personal development. You can check out more about Carl through his website and his bestselling book here. *** Please note that the content discussed in this podcast is intended for self-education and is not to be interpreted as medical advice.

Today on the Limitless Athlete Podcast, I'm interviewing voice of The CrossFit Games and the Talking Elite Fitness Podcast, Sean Woodland. Sean, through his work at The Games, has a unique insight into the best athletes in the world. He has a perspective that few of us will ever see - especially with his experience. Some of the things he sees which usually goes unnoticed, are the moments between events, where the vulnerabilities of athletes are often on display. What Sean pulls out time and time again, is that all athletes struggle with mentality. At least initially anyway. What differentiates those who reach their potential from those who don't, is that the successful athletes have developed techniques for dealing with mindset challenges. Because athletes have developed strategies for maintaining clarity, when the unknown hits, or when catastrophe strikes and other athletes stumble and falter, those with a trained mindset will actually thrive in the same conditions. You need to train your mentality to reach your potential. Sean and I also discuss... The way to finding your unique path in the world A whole plethora of the most fascinating moments in Games history, including Mat Fraser's weaknesses, Tia Toomey's initial nerves, Kristin Holte's self-doubt, and Annie Thorisdottir's rediscovery of belonging. How CrossFit has developed over the past decade And the increasing demands of the sport on mentality

“Being a professional athlete, it's a really selfish lifestyle that you need to lead. You're number 1, 2, and 3. You think about yourself - it's your life. Like Cami said, it's that extra percent that you put in that people don't see. It's the sleeping during the night, the recovery in the evening, the food that you eat, the meal prepping, the training. It is everything, it's the whole package. So, all of a sudden - my body is my work tool and all of a sudden it's not mine anymore. I'm sharing this with someone else, and my body isn't going to come first anymore. She's going to come first, no matter what, and I'm grateful for that, but it's definitely something that you… It's weird. It's a weird feeling. It's an incredible feeling, but it's also really, really strange.” - Annie Thorisdottir Known as “Iceland Annie,” Annie Thorisdottir is a two-time Fittest Woman on Earth (2011-2012) and ten-time CrossFit Games veteran. With a background of gymnastics, pole vaulting, and boot camp, Annie made her Games debut in 2009 at 19 years old. Since then, Annie has been a staple in our sport and she is known to train hard and always compete with a smile. After placing second in the world in the 2020 CrossFit Open, Annie declined her invitation to the 2020 CrossFit Games as she prepares for her next big event: she and her long-time partner, Fred Aegidius, are expecting their first child in August of 2020. Camille Leblanc-Bazinet began her Crossfit Games journey in 2010, and she has competed every year since, ultimately earning the title of “Fittest Woman on Earth” in 2014. In 2019 she made the transition from individual athlete to team competitor and took home silver as a member of Team CrossFit Krypton. A former gymnast and Level 1 Seminar staff member, Camille has also been a member of the Canadian National Olympic weightlifting team and holds a chemical engineering degree. She and her husband, Dave Lipson, recently announced that they are expecting their first child in September of 2020. Annie, Camille and I recently caught up for a long overdue chat. We compared notes on how their pregnancies are progressing, talked about how their training routines have changed, and discussed how their experiences as competitive athletes are helping prepare them for motherhood. And, of course, we shared lots of laughs along the way! In this episode we discuss: Camille's intention to retire from competition, and Annie's desire to compete again Camille's pregnancy experience vs. Annie's pregnancy experience so far How they shared the news with their partners How Camille and Annie's training has changed since becoming pregnant How every woman's pregnancy is different and the importance of listening to your body Lessons Annie & Camille have applied from their competition days to support their pregnancies What it's been like to experience pregnancy alongside their exceptionally fit and supportive partners The lessons they hope to instill in their children You can follow Annie on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.
