Our guest today, Austin Meyer, is a documentarian, journalist, podcaster, and animal rights activist, giving a voice to those whose stories might not otherwise be heard. He's worked for HBO, The New York Times, and National Geographic, to name a few outlets, and his filmmaking has taken him to faraway places like India, Nepal, and Zambia, where Austin chose to adopt a plant-based diet.    Austin is also a passionate ultrarunner. And on April 15th of this year, with a time of ten hours and seven minutes, Austin showed the world what a vegan athlete can accomplish by winning the Zion 100K Trail Race.    This is a must-listen episode for anyone trying to achieve the improbable and for any naysayers claiming it can't be done on a plant-based diet!   “I will say one of the interesting elements is that most of the ultra-athletes who I see when it comes to their nutrition game around race day will actually move towards my end of the spectrum when it comes to race day. Like most people aren't eating dairy, they're not having meat when it comes to this day where you need to perform, which is kind of an interesting element.” – Austin Meyer   What we discuss in this episode: The major life changes Austin experienced that prompted him to adopt a plant-based diet. How he maintained a plant-based diet while living in a rural village in Zambia. How Austin transitioned to journalism and documentary filmmaking after playing soccer at Stanford. What he experienced and learned about himself in the first few years as an ultrarunner. What Austin eats and drinks while he's training and during a race. What he did differently to win the Zion 100K Trail Race. What Austin is doing to promote veganism. Austin's experiences working with two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nicholas Kristof.   Resources:  Austin's website: Austin Meyer Films Instagram: Austin Meyer (@austinmeyerfilms) • Instagram photos and videos Twitter: Austin Meyer (@ameyerfilms) / Twitter Facebook: Austin Meyer Resource Book: Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen: McDougall, Christopher: 9780307279187   Click the link below and support the ADD SOY Act! https://switch4good.org/add-soy-act/ Send us a voice message and ask a question. Like many of us, Seth Smiley used to pay little attention to his health symptoms. Diagnosed with ADHD at 16 and struggling with heartburn from college onwards, Seth believed he'd need over-the-counter meds his entire life. Still slim and training to compete as a long-distance runner, Seth had no reason to believe his underlying health issues were anything to worry about.   It wasn't until early in Seth and Jen's marriage that Seth began exploring biohacking, anti-aging, and anything he could do to improve his running time, that the two discovered the power of diet changes. What started with vegetarian meals progressed into veganism and at some point, Jen's Wake Up moment with simple ingredients.  In this episode, Seth talks with Jen about his life before clean eating, why men looking to bulk up need clean ingredients just like men hoping to lose weight, what Seth eats in a typical day, and why Seth ultimately decided to leave the law firm he built and join Jen full-time at Wake Up and Read the Labels!  Key Takeaways [00:39] - A brief intro to Seth. [01:51] - How Jen and Seth met.  [04:28] - The three words Seth uses to describe Jen.  [06:02] - Seth's life before clean eating.  [11:09] - What Seth would say to men scared of losing weight eating clean. [12:41] - What Seth eats in a day.  [16:11] - Who's influenced Seth's healthy mindset.  [18:34] - How Jen and Seth's family reacted to their clean eating transformation. [21:20] - What workouts Seth prioritizes.  [23:45] - Seth's Wake Up moment.  Quotes [10:41] - “I was thin but I didn't know that I was inflamed. And so whenever [Jen] really started to dial-in on the clean eating and really had the wake-up moment about all the ingredients, that's when I weighed the same but my waist size just dropped, almost overnight.” ~ Seth Smiley [11:58] - “It's not a weight loss thing, it is a get your body to be the size it's supposed to be thing.” ~ Seth Smiley [12:30] - “Clean eating just allows you to feel better while you're trying to achieve those personal goals, whether it be [to] work out or your physical physique.” ~ Seth Smiley Links  Seth Smiley Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen by Christopher McDougall Vibram The Miracle Morning  Bulletproof Coffee Vitamix How To Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill Dave Asprey  The Bulletproof Blog The Upgrade Collective Lifespan Podcast with Dr. David Sinclair X3 Bar Elite Variable Resistance Training System TUMS* PEPCID AC* Connect with our host Jen on Instagram Jen on Facebook Wake Up and Read the Labels! Christopher McDougall is the author of the acclaimed New York Times bestseller Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen. McDougall's epic journey began with a persistent foot ailment that prevented him from running long distances. In his search for a remedy, he ended up in Mexico's Copper Canyons, where he lived with the reclusive Tarahumara Indians, the world's greatest distance runners. Able to run hundreds of miles without rest or injury, these barefoot runners seemed to know secrets that eluded McDougall in his own training. Although he had been told by doctors that he would never run again, McDougall was ultimately able to overcome his injury, find his own inner ultra-athlete, and join the tribe for the challenge of a lifetime, a 50-mile race through the canyons. With the publication of Born to Run, McDougall has been credited with sparking the biggest innovation in modern sportswear: the barefoot-running movement. He is an engaging and inspirational speaker who lectures on how he overcame the mental and physical challenges of being an athlete, all while partaking in the adventure of a lifetime. His message resonates with anyone facing a challenge, and, consequently, he speaks to diverse groups, from university students to fitness enthusiasts and corporate executives. McDougall earned his bachelor's degree from Harvard University. A former war correspondent for the Associated Press, McDougall is a three-time National Magazine Award finalist. He is also the author of Natural Born Heroes: Mastering the Lost Secrets of Strength and Endurance and Running with Sherman: The Donkey with the Heart of a Hero (October 2019). He does his own running in rural Pennsylvania, where he lives with his wife and two daughters. If you have been struggling with running related injuries lately, you don't want to miss this episode. Did you know that according to statistics, somewhere between 30 to 75% of runners are hurt annually. That's a huge number of injuries. Some possible explanations might be modern running shoes to stretching. Running frequency, weight  biomechanical misalignment. And or Muslim balance. During this interview. Chris share some simple solutions that can help you restore your body and get you running again. Injury-free.  Support the show

Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen By Christopher McDougall Inspiration for reading this book came when Nico's friend came for dinner wearing these weird-ass shoes. Naturally - he asked him about it, cause Nico love weird stuff, and told him that humans have evolved to walk and run barefoot, and that cushioned shoes are the reason why so many people have issues in their knees, hips and backs, both from running but also from daily life. And the best way to convince Nico of anything is to tell him that ancient humans used to do it differently. So he was immediately convinced and told Sam that they should read Born to Run for the body series. Although, they already started the recordings for the next season on investing. So here they are! Tom Brown III is back. In this episode, we delve into the importance of nature to our well-being and into how to live and thrive as the human animal that we are. Tom's bio: Tom, otherwise known as “T3”, has been a practitioner and teacher of primitive living skills, wilderness survival, tracking, and nature observation from an early age. Growing up in New Jersey at the Tracker School, he was raised with deep reverence and respect for wild places and the skills our ancestors used to live close to the land. After graduating high school, he spent a few years wandering the country, practicing the skills he learned as a child in both urban and wilderness environments. He eventually returned to Tracker School and after a few years became head instructor and director of operations. In 2009 he left Tracker School to start the Primitive Arts Collective, an outdoor education program that sought to teach people in small groups in many different states across the country. In 2016 Tom moved to Oregon and now works with Trackers Earth. Tom’s role at Tracker’s Earth involves being both the land steward and an adult educator. His unique insight and first-hand knowledge about how large groups of people interact with the landscape help him and the Tracker’s team ensure healthy land management practices. These pratices will benefit not only the students but also the wild things that are the centerpiece of these rural locations. Tom loves all things wild and free. During his downtime, you can find him on a river somewhere fly-fishing for steelhead with his Spey rod and exploring all the beautiful things the PNW has to offer. He is also the Foraging/Homesteading Coordinator and contributor for Anchored Outdoors. A quote about Darwin and Aristotle: "Charles Darwin's famous 1882 letter, in which he remarks that his ‘two gods’, Linnaeus and Cuvier, were ‘mere school‐boys to old Aristotle’, has been thought to be only an extravagantly worded gesture of politeness. However, a close examination of this and other Darwin letters, and of references to Aristotle in Darwin's earlier work, shows that the famous letter was written several weeks after a first, polite letter of thanks, and was carefully formulated and literally meant. Indeed, it reflected an authentic, and substantial, increase in Darwin's already high respect for Aristotle, as certain documents show. It may also have reflected some real insight on Darwin's part into the teleological aspect of Aristotle's thought, more insight than Ogle himself had achieved, as a portion of their correspondence reveals." Episode 42: Fight for Every Breath with Marcus Smith “The more you sweat in peace, the less you bleed in war.” – Norman Schwarzkopf On this show I like to bring you the real mindset masters, and today we’ve got an absolute superstar, Marcus Smith, who’s been through more wars than most. Marcus is an entrepreneur, an extreme athlete, and a performance coach. Based in Dubai, he’s the founder of InnerFight, which helps everyone – from kids to corporate clients – unlock their peak performance, as well as owner of Smith St Paleo, which provides paleo food offerings to help people make better nutrition decisions. Marcus is fit, and I mean FIT. At age 18, he started playing professional rugby, making it to the 2009 Rugby Sevens World Cup. Since then, he’s completed pretty much anything with “ultra” in its name, including: the Marathon des Sables, a six-day ultramarathon through the Sahara Desert known as “the toughest foot race on Earth”; a 230km (143 mile) self-supported ultramarathon across Kenya; and a footrace on the Auvergne volcanoes in France. In February 2018, while training to set a world record in ultra-cycling, Marcus was hit by a truck, with the impact smashing him into a brick wall. But he stared death right in the face and said, “Not today.” Rather than focus on what he lost, Marcus decided to create a documentary ‘Fight for Every Breath’ where he details his experience and his journey back to full health. Just nine months after the accident, Marcus completed not one, not two, but 30 MARATHONS … IN 30 DAYS! In this episode, we’re going to talk with Marcus about: The secrets to his extraordinary self-discipline The accident that almost killed him (and how he came to terms with his trauma) The darkest moments of his recovery What you can do for supreme motivation each day; and How to inspire unwavering self-discipline in others. Strap yourself in. Let’s WIN THE DAY with Marcus Smith! _

In this episode, Melissa and Leah are joined by new mother, Ashlyn Rogers, a massage therapist, competitive runner, and tiny-house dweller.  Ashlyn begins by sharing her and her husband's multi-year experience living in a 200-square-foot tiny house, including the discomfort of loft-entry while nine months pregnant, the stress of navigating life with a newborn while in close quarters, and also the value of having an intimate postpartum experience together as a new family.  She also shares her journey as a runner, which changed significantly after becoming a mother.  Factors such as lack of time and post-delivery recovery have made running a challenge, but its positive impact on her mental health has made it a necessity. The Book Blurb in this episode is from Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen, a memoir by Christopher McDougall.  For more about McDougall and to watch his TED Talk, click here.A few other noteworthy mentions include nonfiction book, Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle by Emily and Amelia Nagoski, a parenting course on supporting toddlers' social emotional development and emotional regulation created by Big Little Feelings, and Ashlyn's experience competing in the Audi Power of Four trail race in Aspen, Colorado.

One has been done before and one has an extra DDYH attached to it.   Quickdraws include poo poo, pee pee, an astonishing fact about A Christmas Carol, the fastest red card in soccer EVER and have you ever heard of Sartre? (that’s ok)   Admit it, you’re always wondered why a marathon is 26.2 miles. Or maybe you think you already know the answer. Well Andy is here to subvert your expectations and put that to rest! Like that first Marathon runner of yesteryear.    Christmas is cancelled, say many Burgomeisters around the world. Miserable masked misers making mince of merriment. But fear not. Santa Claus is coming to town. Hans (not Gruber) but Steininger. Germany. Beards. The Burger Meister. Die Hard. What were we talking about again? It’s a Christmas story, Dave promises.   RELOAD – Andy is drinking Elijah Craig Straight Rye and Dave is drinking the coveted Pliny the Elder   Andy recommends the book Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen. Whether you’re a runner or a couch potato, you’ll be fascinated by the stories in this book.   Dave recommends The Mandalorian, especially after the conclusion of a stellar Season 2. Dave and Andy basically want a redo on the sequel trilogy. This is the Star Wars they’ve been waiting for.   Andy doesn’t recommend messing with moms. Especially if you’re part of the cartel. Christopher McDougall was a freelance writer when he came across the story of a tribe of super-athletes living in Mexico's Copper Canyons who'd been living unchanged for 400 years. From that came Born to Run, a chaotic adventure that reads more like a Harlan Coben novel than one of the great works of sporting literature. From drug cartels, murder, an incredible cast of characters and a race through some of the most savage terrain in North America, McDougall tells Simon Clancy about how his classic came to print.

Christopher McDougall became one of my favorite authors immediately after I finished, Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen. Not only was it an incredibly entertaining story, but the way he weaves research, science and side stories alongside the main narrative is just as educational as it is exciting. Since then I’ve read Natural Born Heroes: Mastering the Lost Secrets of Strength and Endurance and his most recent book, Running with Sherman: The Donkey with the Heart of a Hero. How Pinole Blue’s Eddie Sandoval Is Spreading a Family Tradition While Supporting a Tribe of Ultrarunners

Long after they moved from Mexico to Wichita, Kansas, Eddie Sandoval’s parents still savored the taste of home. Each time the family went back to Mexico for a visit, they’d pick up some pinole—roasted, ground corn that’s made into baked goods and drinks. Eddie remembers mixing it with water to quench thirst in the summer, and sipping it warm with cinnamon and sugar in the winter. Wichita has a sizeable population of people who have immigrated from Mexico. Still, the Sandovals couldn’t find their beloved beverage nearby. So, Eddie decided to start a company to provide it. On this week’s episode of #WeGotGoals, he explains how and why. One key motivator was the Tarahumara—the sandal-wearing ultrarunning tribe made famous by the book Born to Run. They hail from the same region of Mexico as the Sandovals, and drink pinole to power their endurance efforts. During Christmas break of his senior year at Wichita State University, Eddie tracked down a supplier of organic, non-genetically modified blue corn (given its hue by the same types of health-promoting antioxidants as blueberries). He loaded up a truck in Mexico and drove it back to his parents’ garage. That was the start of Pinole Blue, a company that now sells powders, energy bites, cookies, and tortillas online and in close to 300 stores in 18 states. In line with our focus on Contributing Generously, giving back has always been central to Eddie’s business model—a portion of his proceeds go to benefit the Tarahumara, and he’s sponsored Tarahumara runner Lorena Ramírez. On this episode, we discuss: 2:29: Exactly what pinole is, and why it’s so popular with the Tarahumara 4:48: Why Eddie decided to start a business as a college student 6:38: The big goal he’s accomplished, and why keeping a focus on generosity has been critical 10:25: The first steps to getting the word out—including Craig’s List and Facebook marketplace—and the big break that helped him take things to the next level 13:39: Challenges he’s faced along the way (including some top-notch cornmeal puns—the grind never stops!) 15:53: How his age—he’s still only 24—both hinders and helps him 17:37: The advantages pinole has as a fuel for athletes 20:07: His big goals for the future, including the dream sports stars he’d love to sponsor 24:57: How he stays balanced as a busy entrepreneur 25:49: His number-one secret to success thus far Links/resources we mention: The Pinole Blue website, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook pages Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen, the 2009 book by Christopher McDougall Start Something That Matters, the book by TOMS Shoes and One for One founder Blake Mycoskie Lorena, Light-Footed Woman, the Netflix documentary about Tarahumara runner Lorena Ramírez   If you love this episode as much as we do, subscribe to the #WeGotGoals podcast wherever you like to listen to podcasts, including on Apple and Spotify (and hey, leave us a rating while you’re at it!).

Something to consider as a coach, “Am I teaching kids to move well?" How should we be teaching running to young children? What typically causes injuries while running?   The importance of adding single leg exercises to strength programs What makes Jay want to pull over when he sees someone running along the road? Why cutting volume short but keeping intensity high is a more effective practice strategy Using analogies for running posture: marinate puppet vs. military posture Why is “elbows behind hips” a great place to start with fixing running posture? Why is foot strength important to running? Myth-buster alert: Training on an unstable surface is not an effective strategy in strengthening ankle and foot Injuries in kids (knee pain, back pain, etc) that could have been avoided  "All professional athletes take time off from sport, and are good at multiple sports." How playing other sports helps a child to develop skills that will make them a better over-all athlete  80% of athletes who play collegiate sports played other sports in high school "Single sport athletes are more likely to get hurt later on in life." "Coaches, what are you doing in preseason to prevent tissue injuries?" Jay is a certified coach through both the United States Track and Field Association and the United States Cycling Federation, and certified Golf Fitness Instructor through Titleist Performance Institute. He has a competitive history in swimming, triathlon, cycling, and running events on both the local and national level, and has coached athletes from local standouts to national medalists. He is excited to share this passion with the team at Rebound, and explore the Pacific Northwest with his family on knobbies, skis, boards, and soles. You have the power to create the world you want to live in, both on social media and in person. On today’s episode, I am joined by Kristina Werner, a graphic designer and YouTuber who has a passion for all things crafting. We discuss the growth she’s had with her YouTube channel, what she does when she lacks motivation for creating a video and how she finds inspiration for her work. She shares how she spends her typical day as her own boss, why you should acknowledge stress and how she got into teaching online card classes. We also chat about examining the icky feeling we can sometimes feel while scrolling through our social media feeds and creating the social media world we desire.    What’s in this episode: The slow growth that she’s had with her YouTube channel What Kristina does when she lacks motivation to create a video How Kristina finds inspiration for her work How she manages negativity or negative feedback Why Kristina has been into stenciling and hand lettering lately  How Kristina typically schedules her day The difference between work life balance and harmony Acknowledging her stress and giving herself permission to feel it How to stop using the blanket of busy How Kristina got into teaching online card classes Doing a cruise vacation with other creatives and crafters The importance of putting yourself out there Examining why you’re getting an icky feeling when looking at social media Creating the social media world that you want to live in How Kristina crafts a life she loves Giving yourself permission to take a break    About Kristina: After graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design, Kristina Werner started her graphic design career at papercrafting company Stampin’ Up! She initially designed their catalog. It was during this time that she discovered the wonderful and creative outlet of stamping, scrapbooking and cardmaking. Since finding her love of all things papercrating related, she has designed product for Stampin’ Up!, BasicGrey, and her own digital kits.   She began her popular blog, K Werner Design, in 2006 to share her cards and pages online with friends and family. This led to joining various design teams. She has also had numerous cards and pages published in magazines.   Kristina is well-known for her popular card videos where she walks viewers through the creation of a handmade card. Her popular YouTube videos have been watched over 37 million times, and her YouTube channel has over 400,000 subscribers who view her videos weekly.   On top of maintaining an active blog and YouTube channel, Kristina also designs stamps and dies for Simon Says Stamp, and stamps for the Simon monthly card kit. Listener Questions (45:25) – I am curious if there has been any research regarding the woman in a state of postpartum amenorrhea, and whether their hormone profile and preferences in a mate are more similar to a woman on or off contraceptives? Many women do not begin to cycle until 1 or 2 years, or even more, after birth, and my understanding is that this is more common in traditional societies. I'm not sure that it's "normal" for a woman to cycle throughout her childbearing years. It seems more likely that she would usually be either pregnant or in a state of lactational amenorrhea, becoming pregnant again shortly after her fertility returns. Even if a woman isn’t using contraception, is she likely to have fertility cycles very often through her childbearing years? ------ www.redeemerradio.com www.cathmed.org Follow us on Facebook: @DoctorDoctorShow Submit your question(s): Text (Holy Cross College text line) - 260-436-9598 Online - www.RedeemerRadio.com/Doctor E-mail - Doctor@RedeemerRadio.com Subscribe to the Podcast: iTunes | Google Play | SoundCloud | RSS

What Up, Get Up Nation? My name is Ben Biddick, the Host of the Get Up Nation Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball player and CEO of Lurong Living, Adam Greenberg. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with Jordan Theurer. I had the honor of being connected with Jordan by Marc Holley who owns Atlas Defense. Marc is an amazing person who stepped up when I wanted to help Renee Parks and her husband celebrate completing chemotherapy. Check out Renee’s amazing journey on Get Up Nation Podcast Episode 3 and check out Marc Holley’s Atlas Defense at the link below where he coaches his clients in personal security to develop confidence through competence. He served in the Marine Corps and lives to impact veteran mental health. Which brings me to Jordan. Jordan is the first Get Up Grant Winner of 2019. Get Up Nation provided him with $50 to get some gear he needed for a race he only had 4 days to prepare for. When we get into this episode you will understand why I believe Jordan is deserving of our support. He is doing amazing things and overcoming tremendous adversity. He is an Ultra Runner who just completed the St Croix Winter Ultra 40 mile race in Hinckley, Minnesota, on January 12, 2019. He pulled a sled in the middle of the woods at night for 40 miles on 4 days notice! Initially he thought he earned twentieth place but found out afterward he placed fourteenth by finishing the race in 11 hours, 27 minutes, and 14 seconds! Jordan is a United States Army Veteran and a survivor of alcoholism. In the darkest times of his addiction he discovered the book Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen by Christopher McDougall. It was the spark Jordan needed to begin his journey toward sobriety and health. Some ridiculed him when he first articulated he was going to be an Ultra Runner in the throes of addiction, but here he is now making his dream a reality. COACH JENNY - EPISODE 38 - SCOTT JUREK: North - Finding My Way While Running the Appalachian Trail with Scott Jurek Scott Jurek is considered one of the greatest long distance runners of all time. He has claimed victories in nearly all of ultrarunning's elite trail and road events including the historic 153-mile Spartathlon, the Hardrock 100, the Badwater 135-Mile Ultramarathon, and the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run, which he won a record seven times.   He is also the New York Times bestselling author of Eat and Run, has been prominently featured in countless publications, and is a star of the international  bestseller, Born to Run. In 2015, Scott decided to mark the end of a 20-year career as a competitive runner by undertaking what would be his mind and body's greatest test: establishing a new fastest known time (FKT) for running the entire length of the 2,189-mile Appalachian Trail. In order to set the record, he would run each and every day, rain or shine, for 46 days straight—NO days off— While Scott ran, his wife Jenny who is also an accomplished ultramarathoner, led the support crew, an ever changing motley group of old friends and new acquaintances. In their book NORTH, Scott and Jenny chronicle their amazing journey.   This is a conversation with Scott about his new book, this incredible adventure, retirement, and parenthood. Enjoy.   TIMELINE HIGHLIGHTS: :01     WHEN DID YOU DISCOVER YOU WANTED TO BE A RUNNER? 3:01   THE COMMUNITY BETWEEN RUNNERS 6:24   RECORDING ‘NORTH' AS AN AUDIOBOOK 7:25   WRITING THE BOOK ‘NORTH' 9:08   SCOTT'S MOTIVATION TO RUN THE 2,160 MILE APPALACHIAN TRAIL 13:20 TRAINING STRATEGY FOR THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL 20:09 PERSEVERANCE IN ADVERSITY 24:00 ANGELS ON THE TRAIL 27:35 CREWING CHALLENGES ON THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL 30:04 CRITICS ALONG THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL 34:22 HIKING vs RUNNING ON THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL 35:52 SCOTT'S FAVORITE PARTS OF THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL 37:05 SOURCES OF STRENGTH AND MOTIVATION TO ENDURE 45:05 WHAT WERE THE FINAL STAGES, HOURS, AND MILES LIKE? 48:04 HOW PARENTHOOD CHANGED SCOTT'S LIFE   KEY TAKEAWAYS: The running community makes running both a solitary and social sport. Scott has also taken the running world by storm with his 2015 Appalachian Trail speed record, averaging nearly 50 miles a day over 46 days—and the United States all-surface record in the 24-Hour Run with 165.7 miles: 6.5 marathons in one day.  Off the trail, Scott is a New York Times-bestselling author for his memoir, Eat & Run, has been prominently featured in countless publications, and is a star of the international bestseller, Born To Run.  More than just a champion, Scott is a true student and ambassador of the sport, known to stay at finish lines cheering until the last runner crosses. When not racing, he donates his time to many non profit organizations and is an avid volunteer in the areas of environmental conservation, fitness and health. A passionate advocate for vegetarianism, he follows a 100% plant-based diet, which he credits for his endurance, recovery and consistent twenty year racing career. THE STORY OF HAVING A MASSIVE IDEA AND THEN MAKING IT HAPPEN. Adam Dodds, CEO and Viktor Nebehaj, Head of Growth Freetrade is a revolutionary trading platform for UK investors to make trades for free. Their mission is to completely improve the experience of trading so that people can make the best use of their money and never have to worry about fee's. Adam Dodds, CEO and co-founder of Freetrade shares his experience in starting the platform and key issues and features of the platform. Viktor Nebehaj is the Head of Growth and goes much deeper into crowdfunding strategies, investing strategies and tools to make you a better human. Freetrade.io is launching this month May 2018 and also raising their 3rd round of funding on Crowdcube.com for anyone interested to get involved. TIPS LONGER TERM INVESTING. I really like Viktor's investing approach of looking for the companies that have maybe been neglected by the stock market with newer fancier businesses like Tesla or facebook taking the limelight but actually have a great business model and are offering a decent return and have invested in R and D to keep themselves producing relevant products and selling a big volume of products and companies like Ford and Nike represent that. Also the long-term goal of aiming to be able to make a reliable income of your investments is such a great way to be designing your life and really worth thinking about. A GOOD IDEA CAN GET FUNDING Apparently raising a relatively small in their words circa £150k is easy. This seems pretty big but with just a few founders with an idea, you can tell a good story about it's totally doable. You need to show you know what you are doing then you really have no excuse to quit your job and just bloody do it. Now in the UK this is even easier with the SEIS scheme but there are similar incentives in many countries. PRACTICE REAL KINDNESS Kindness isn’t just being nice to your family members and friends or doing acts that you hope to get paid back. It’s about doing things that genuinely help or improve someone else’s life without expecting any recognition or thanks. Practicing such kindness is the most enlightening, empowering and satisfying thing you can do and learning to make such acts will give huge personal rewards once you can do it. BOOKS Get any of the books free on audible (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Audible-Free-Trial-Digital-Membership/dp/B00OPA2XFG?tag=samharris48%E2%80%9321) BORN TO RUN: A HIDDEN TRIBE, SUPERATHLETES, AND THE GREATEST RACE THE WORLD HAS NEVER SEEN BY CHRISTOPHER MCDOUGALL (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Born-Run-Hidden-Ultra-Runners-Greatest/dp/1861978774/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2L8OOLE8SABP2&keywords=born+to+run&qid=1580444932&s=books&sprefix=born+to+%2Cstripbooks%2C-1&sr=1-1) Full of incredible characters, amazing athletic achievements, cutting-edge science, and, most of all, pure inspiration, Born to Run is an epic adventure that began with one simple question: Why does my foot hurt? In search of an answer, Christopher McDougall sets off to find a tribe of the world’s greatest distance runners and learn their secrets, and in the process shows us that everything we thought we knew about running is wrong. CHAOS MONKEYS: OBSCENE FORTUNE AND RANDOM FAILURE IN SILICON VALLEY BY ANTONIO GARCIA MARTINEZ (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Chaos-Monkeys-Inside-Silicon-Machine/dp/1785034553/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1P114FZ0DE1L6&keywords=chaos+monkeys&qid=1580444888&s=books&sprefix=chaos+mon%2Cstripbooks%2C434&sr=1-1) Liar’s Poker meets The Social Network in an irreverent exposé of life inside the tech bubble, from industry provocateur Antonio García Martínez, a former Twitter advisor, Facebook product manager and startup founder/CEO. The reality is, Silicon Valley capitalism is very simple: Investors are people with more money than time. Employees are people with more time than money. Entrepreneurs are the seductive go-between. Marketing is like sex: only losers pay for it. ENDURANCE: SHACKLETON'S GREAT ADVENTURE - ALFRED LANSING (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Endurance-Shackletons-Incredible-Voyage-Antarctic/dp/0753809877/ref=sr_1_1?crid=C8PF1EC1WWJ9&keywords=alfred+lansing+endurance&qid=1580444850&s=books&sprefix=alfred+lan%2Cstripbooks%2C458&sr=1-1) In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. DISRUPTED: MY MISADVENTURE IN THE START-UP BUBBLE BY DAN LYONS (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Disrupted-Ludicrous-Misadventures-Start-up-Bubble/dp/1786491028/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2WGSB1J98334E&keywords=dan+lyons&qid=1580444802&s=books&sprefix=dan+ly%2Cstripbooks%2C413&sr=1-1) For twenty-five years Dan Lyons was a magazine writer at the top of his profession--until one Friday morning when he received a phone call: Poof. His job no longer existed. "I think they just want to hire younger people," his boss at Newsweek told him. Fifty years old and with a wife and two young kids, Dan was, in a word, screwed. Then an idea hit. Dan had long reported on Silicon Valley and the tech explosion. Why not join it? HubSpot, a Boston start-up, was flush with $100 million in venture capital. They offered Dan a pile of stock options for the vague role of "marketing fellow." What could go wrong? HILLBILLY ELEGY: A MEMOIR OF A FAMILY AND CULTURE IN CRISIS BY J.D. VANCE (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hillbilly-Elegy-Memoir-Family-Culture/dp/0008220565/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1AQOL85K3QNG9&keywords=hillbilly+elegy&qid=1580444773&s=books&smid=A1G3UP32AZJ14F&sprefix=hillbi%2Cstripbooks%2C366&sr=1-1) From a former Marine and Yale Law School Graduate, a poignant account of growing up in a poor Appalachian town, that offers a broader, probing look at the struggles of America’s white working class. Part memoir, part historical and social analysis, J. D. Vance’s Hillbilly Elegy is a fascinating consideration of class, culture, and the American dream. SHANTARAM BY GREGORY DAVID ROBERTS (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Shantaram-Gregory-David-Roberts/dp/0349117543/ref=sr_1_1?crid=6CPHT12NYP8J&keywords=shantaram&qid=1580444746&s=books&sprefix=shantara%2Cstripbooks%2C370&sr=1-1) "It took me a long time and most of the world to learn what I know about love and fate and the choices we make, but the heart of it came to me in an instant, while I was chained to a wall and being tortured." So begins this epic, mesmerizing first novel set in the underworld of contemporary Bombay. Shantaram is narrated by Lin, an escaped convict with a false passport who flees maximum security prison in Australia for the teeming streets of a city where he can disappear. ''I literally knew that whatever I dreamed of I could do'' - Tommy Danger Has there ever been a moment in your life when you thought “I could never do that in a million years!”? What if instead, you believed that you could? What would be possible if you pushed past your self-limiting beliefs and decided to show up big in every aspect of your life? Today’s conversation is with my good friend and adventure athlete, Tommy Danger, who will inspire you to push your life to the ultimate limit! Tommy learned in his mid 20's that life wasn't about the money you make, but the lives you change. Through his love of adventure he founded a non-profit foundation called More Than Just Me that uses adventure projects to raise money and drive awareness for important causes around the world. He is currently in the middle of his third project called More Than Just Mountains where he is climbing the Seven Summits (the highest peak on each continent) with two of his close friends to raise awareness for Cystic Fibrosis. It's been almost 10 years since Tommy made a massive change to his lifestyle and since then he has biked from Los Angeles to Boston, ran from Seattle to Daytona Beach, and has completed four of the Seven Summits. He currently lives in Park City, UT with his beautiful wife Alyx, their pup Boo, and a little Danger baby on the way. In this exciting discussion, Tommy shares the lessons he’s learned through his many adventures and exactly how he’s using them to positively impact the world. He walks us through his incredible trek through Papua, Indonesia and how he barely made it out alive. The journey included everything from hiking through tropical jungles and traversing through rivers, to climbing steep cliffs and negotiating with tribal chiefs. If you want to learn how to turn your biggest dreams into reality, push your body to unimaginable limits, and make the most out of each and every moment that life has to offer, you definitely won’t want to miss this convo! Here’s a quick breakdown of our chat… [08:22] Where did his incredible sense of adventure come from and what exactly is the story behind his nickname, Fat Tommy? [12:20] Hear about his first big adventure, biking coast-to-coast from California to Boston, to raise money for at-risk teens. [15:00] The importance of believing that YOU can turn your dreams into reality. [16:30] Learn how More Than Just Me is using adventure to bring awareness to important causes. [20:15] How to see the positive side of anything, find your internal happiness and change the world in the process! [24:40] His crazy adventure to run across the US (20 miles per day for 6 months) and the single moment that made all the blood, sweat and tears 100% worth it. [30:20] Find out how the More than just Mountains project is helping to drive awareness to those affected by Cystic Fibrosis. [32:50] Learn how to tap into the power of your mind and push your body to the ultimate limit. [40:20] The story of how he barely escaped from a remote location buried deep in the heart of Papua, Indonesia. ''We have birth and we have death. Hi Path Menders, This week I bring you my discussion with the amazing Josh LaJaunie. Josh is a self described plant-eating, miles-logging, WHODAT from Bayou Lafourche with an appetite for life! He is an inspiration after truly mending his own path. Weighing over 400 Lbs, Josh started his journey because he wanted to lose some weight, but more importantly, to shake things up a little by providing some change in his life as a way of coping with a stressful period. I first learned about Brian MacKenzie when I was training for my first Ironman’s and I read his books about endurance and mobility and he changed my concepts about what was possible with running. Basically, pounding out miles just doesn’t work as you get older (and when younger too). But this doesn’t apply to just running…… Brian applies exponential training approaches to optimize human performance; he relentlessly challenges conventions and tests assumptions. Recently I was reacquainted with Brian’s work when I started training with Wim Hof's cold and breathing methods and was looking to see who else was interested in them….. So I reached out to ask him on the show.  Major take – aways from this episode are: How you can change anything with 10 breaths. Using breathing techniques to amplify, deepen and quicken meditation benefits. The power of breath work to stabilize mood regulation and reactive behavior patterns. Co2 adaptation + Integrating breathing, ice and heat. How to activate the Vagus nerve. Importance of diaphramatic breathing. Using breathing to access Flow States. Proper breathing technique for sport, business and life. Mobility – the importance of keeping tissue supple. Eating principles vs fads to follow that Brian coaches people on related to a) Vegetables; b)humanely treated animal protein (not stressed); c) High quality fats. The impact of a) sugar; b) processed foods; c) hydration; d) high quality breads. Must read and listen to Netflix video by Mike Pollan, “Cooked” and In Defense of Food – An Eaters Manifesto. Taking personal responsibility of your health by engaging your doctor. Benefits of getting your genetics tested (Wellness fx). Dumbing down technology so that you can feel again. Mike Rowe on the importance of working opportunities not passion. I have linked up all the show notes on redzonetech.net/podcast where you can get access to Brian’s blog publications. About Brian Brian Mackenzie is a human performance and movement specialist. He is the innovator of the endurance, strength and conditioning paradigm. He has studied performance and movement for more than a decade along with altitude, hypoxia, breathing mechanics, heat and cold exposure. He has spent most of his time training in and around the water and ocean. Brian has competed in Ironman (Canada 2004), and has run the Western States 100 and the Angeles Crest 100 mile endurance runs. He co-authored the book Power Speed Endurance, and NYTimes Best Seller UnBreakable Runner. Brian founded and created Power Speed Endurance (PSE), which specializes in movement, skill & strength development for sports with an emphasis in running, cycling, and swimming mechanics. MacKenzie's program has taught over 50 seminars per year (on avg since 2007) worldwide and provides free programming via PSE. Running is not new to this blog or podcast. In fact, I've done episodes on various aspects of running before (listen to Episode 20, Episode 25, and Episode 32.)   But a couple of things have changed since I last talked about running on the podcast. First, I am just about to complete my certification as a Level I Running Coach through the RRCA. I've been wanting to do this for a while and was so excited to take the course. I had a great time with the cohort. Second, one of the main reasons I wanted to get certified was so that I could bring that knowledge to some therapy running groups I am working on starting. Even though I have been running through years and feel that I can be helpful to runners when building a program...I really wanted the information and knowledge to do it in a way that just wasn't relying on my experience since every runner is different.   So, in this episode: I talk briefly about my coaching certification process. I share my desire to start therapy running groups in my practice. And I review the 4 key components of self-care that running engages. Please listen and subscribe to my podcast in the following places, and then leave a comment letting me know what you liked about the show, or what guest you would like to hear from. As a kid I loved to run. Whether it was chasing or racing friends, running was something that I grew up loving to do. And I continued to run in high school, competing in the 110 meter high hurdles, 300 meter intermediate hurdles and the 4 x 400. But somewhere over the years I noticed I stopped running as much. Sure, I still ran a couple of nights a week, but that was more of an ad on to my weight lifting routine, and just another avenue that I thought would help me stay fit. But in the Spring of 2006 my brother Wyatt called me to see if I wanted to run the Chicago Marathon with him. I don't remember the details of our conversation, but I remember agreeing to do do with very little hesitancy. Sure, I had never run more than 3 miles at one time in my life, but that didn't seem to bother me. I guess I figured I would....figure it out. So I trained for 16 weeks and ended up running the marathon in about 4:13. And at that moment I became addicted to running. I entered another marathon, ran a few 5K's, half-marathons, and eventually a 50k in February of 2014. And at the time of this writing I am training for the Palo Duro 50 Mile race in October. And over the years, especially this last year, I have really found that not only has running continued to transform my life, but it has brought me great joy. I look forward to getting out and running because I never come back from a run with any regrets. In this podcast I explore several things: my own personal journey with running and how it has transformed my life. 10 benefits (and more) that running brings to your life. 7 tips to get you started in running, or to help renew your interest in running. 5 books that have inspired my running and that will inspire you.   Resources Mentioned in the Podcast Ultramarathon Man: Confessions of an All-Night Runner by Dean Karnazes Finding Ultra: Rejecting Middle Age, Becoming One of the World's Most Fittest Men, and Discovering Myself by Rich Roll Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Ever Seen by Christopher McDougall Why We Run: A Natural History by Bernd Heinrich Eat and Run: My Unlikely Journey to Ultramarathon Greatness by Scott Jurek Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain by John J. "Turn running into play" - Chris McDougall I am super excited for this episode because my guest is one of my personal adventure heroes! He is the very definition of a curious explorer, and all his work ties back into the simple truth of having fun being a human. Chris McDougall is perhaps best know for his phenomenal 2009 book, Born to Run, where he explores running as a human birthright, by following the Tarahumara indians of Copper Canyon, Mexico. Born to Run is one of the main reasons I started eating chia seeds and got back into train running when I lived in Montana. Born to Run is also currently being made into a movie with Matthew McConaughey. Chris has another amazing new book out in Natural Born Heroes which tells a further story of Cretan resistance runners in WWII, parkour, and human performance. This episode was a ton of fun for me, as Chris and I share a lot of common interests. We go over both his books, and broadly covers diet, running, athletic performance, movement, evolution, and mindset. I think you will be fascinated at how many different ideas Chris can bring into the conversation. If you are at all interested in optimal human performance, running, or health, this is the episode for you! Quotes: "Born to run articulated what people were already thinking" - Chris McDougall "We have a weird notion that other people are better than we are" - Chris McDougall "Turn running into play" - Chris McDougall "Why do we pay people to play our games for us?" - Chris McDougall "We can't pretend we can outthink mother nature" - Chris McDougall "I try to never do what I've done the day before" - Chris McDougall "We are curious about what we don't understand" - Chris McDougall "What is good for the species is good for the individual" - Chris McDougall "We are unstoppable explorers" - Chris McDougall "I practice running with pleasure and not pain" - Chris McDougall "Adventure is ignorance, I live my life by stupidity" - Chris McDougall What you will learn in this episode: -How to take advantage of free elastic recoil (stored energy in your fascia) -The running form technique the the world's most efficient runners use -Why you should consider removing fast burning foods from your diet -How and why you should get into Parkour -How to Vault and Bear Crawl -How to forage for food in an urban environment -How to minimize injury and maximize fat burning -Why Chris refines his running form every couple of years -How you can emulate the virtues of ancient Greek heroes -The mental stages of attempting new movements Continue the adventure: ChrisMcDougall.com The Outside Magazine series The Art of the Hero Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen Natural Born Heroes: How a Daring Band of Misfits Mastered the Lost Secrets of Strength and Endurance The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals Tara Wood Wild Fitness Thanks Chris McDougall! Almost no aspect of life has not been touched by the forward march of science and technology.  The world of sports is no exception.   When we watch a game, or even multiple games as in the Olympics, we want to see things we’ve never seen before. The narrative of human performance drives our love of any sport.  And today, science is glad to oblige. As we learn more about the brain, the body, genetics and biological evolution itself, scientists and engineers find news ways to enhance innate athletic ability. It’s no accident that story abounded recently about how the newly minted World Champion SF Giants, had hired a sleep expert to advise them when it was best to travel. So what’s going on now, and where will it all lead?  That's what Wired editor Mark Mcclusky set out to discover in his new book Faster, Higher, Stronger: How Sports Science Is Creating a New Generation of Superathletes--and What We Can Learn from Them.My conversation with Mark McClusky:
