Graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Psychology from the University of Nebraska in 2002, Chuma began his “jump” into BASE with a solid skydiving career beginning at the age of 16 in Caldwell, Idaho. In 2007, after completing over 700 skydives, Chuma made the move to Twin Falls, ID where he now runs a very successful BASE Jumping School – Inter-Demented BASE. Chuma's impressive athletic background in gymnastics, skiing, and pole-vaulting has provided him with the necessary skill set and physical fitness to successfully perform complicated aerial maneuvers in BASE Jumping. He has become well known for his originality and style within this arena and is responsible for several world recognized BASE Jumping tricks, as well as pioneering many unpacked jumps and refining the “game over”. Chuma is responsible for making the “tweener,” named by Chuma, famous amongst jumpers by successfully performing this trick off multiple BASE exits. Chuma's background in gymnastics gives him a unique kinesthetic awareness that sets him apart from other BASE jumpers, when it comes to tricks, solid exits and landings. In 2009, Chuma and his former business partners developed the world's first commercial Tandem Base Jumping operation. During the experimental phase, Chuma personally performed many test jumps with experienced BASE jumpers acting as passengers. Since 2009, he has completed over 500 tandem BASE jumps without incident, and currently holds the record for the most tandem BASE jumps completed. Recently, he has completed a tandem jump off all four objects in the word BASE. It is believed that he is the first and only person in the world to have done this. His company, Tandem BASE LLC, has performed tandem BASE jumps at bridge day in Fayetteville, West Virginia for the past 4 years. Chuma was the first person in the world to complete a tandem BASE jump from the Menara KL Tower, and the Wisma Sanyan in Malaysia, 2013. In 2014, Chuma became the first person to perform a tandem BASE jump in Zakynthos, Greece at Shipwreck beach, and later that year in Arco, Italy at Monte' Brento. Later in 2014, Chuma finished in the top 16 at the Red Bull Aces Wingsuit race, an event where the world's best wingsuit athletes completed in a slalom course held in place by helicopters. In 2015, Chuma performed the first quadriplegic tandem BASE jump with passenger Pete Bonser. The following year, Chuma took the first person with cerebral palsy, Marlena Katene, on a jump from the KL tower in Malaysia. One of his favorite achievements includes taking 102 year old Dorothy Cluster on a tandem BASE jump from the Perrine Bridge in June 2013. Being able to travel the world, meeting like-minded people, and BASE jumping in incredible places is Chuma's biggest joy. Currently, Chuma is moving towards a career in television and film, and has made several television appearances in the past 4 years including: the Travel Channel's Ride-iculous, Trip Flip, and MSNBC's Caught on Camera. He is currently working with producers and colleagues on a documentary that highlights the type of lifestyle he enjoys – being a professional “fun maker”. Despite this very impressive professional history, Sean remains grounded and humble regarding his achievements and always stresses the importance of planning, experience and guidance in all areas of BASE jumping.
"Ever wondered what it's like to stand on the edge of a cliff, staring into the void, where a single mistake could cost your life? In this episode, I take you to that edge, sharing the raw, visceral experience of BASE jumping and the profound insights it brings. With many friends lost to the sport, the stakes are real, and life takes on a new perspective—where only pure presence remains.I'm an experienced skydiver (1600+ skydives) and a BASE jumper (200+).BASE is an acronym which stands for Building, Antenna, Span and Earth. These are the objects we jump from as BASE jumpers, while skydivers jump from an airplane. I guide you through the sensations, the fear, and the surrender, so you can feel it without having to jump yourself. We'll explore how such moments recalibrate our values and offer deep spiritual insights, and I'll suggest safer ways to access similar transformative experiences.Join me for a fascinating freefall into the unknown, the dissolution of the self, and the discovery of something greater.
In this episode, Matt Blank talks with Avery Badenhop, Dennis McGlynn, and Harry Parker, who were known during the 90s as the “three-headed dragon” of BASE and founders of the infamous Team Ill Vision. This team has been a timeless model for outlaw extreme sports gangs living an endless summer lifestyle. The leader of Team Ill Vision, Avery, is the quintessential counterculture athlete, creating a unique lifestyle that would inspire generations of jumpers to go all in and totally cut away from the mainstream. Dennis McGlynn, one of the first jumpers to perform BASE stunts for film and television, is also a pioneer of manufacturing BASE-specific gear. He was one of the original FJC instructors and the first to be prosecuted by the federal government for BASE jumping. Harry Parker, the man with the perspective, has been an active jumper and photographer for more than three decades, participating in and capturing some of our community's historic moments. Harry helped put a face and voice to the BASE jumping lifestyle. Their team created a culture around the pursuit of BASE jumping, opening the first public events, competitions, and demonstrations. Their access efforts helped open jumps on BLM land, the Perrine Bridge, and recrafted Bridge Day in West Virginia, as well as forged paths to international BASE events, which have continued to grow over several decades. They close out the show by putting an F1 spin on a classic game of choice, in which we learn how Sean would like to treat the Circuit of the Americas.

I would argue that our climbing community is mostly open, kind, and understanding. But I am sure we all have our own experiences with people who are not. The silent judgy squad that think they own the crag. The keyboard warrior that spreads hate, judgment, and negativity behind the protection of a screen. Today we sit down with Landon McDowell, a self proclaimed “Reformed Elitist”. Having started climbing at the age of 14 he quickly noticed a natural proclivity towards the sport. Climbing soon became the source for Landon's identity, ego, and happiness. He noticed this and its effect on the people around him and quit rock climbing to work on himself and pursue his new passion of flight sports. Landon now has a calm, collected and positive outlook on life and is aiming to push the boundaries of alpine flight sports. In our conversation, we chat about Landons rapid progression from a gym sport climber to projecting Desert Reality, an iconic and imposing roof crack in Red Rock Canyon. We get to hear what it might be like to be on the other side of the keyboard to the “yer gonna die” comment we all see online. And finally, we chat about Landons new passion of base jumping and speed flying and how he envisions mixing these disciplines with climbing and taking them into the mountains…Please rate, review the show, and share this podcast with your friends. BASE jumping accidents are rarely talked about and I've always wondered why. Last month, Derek reached out to me to share his story regarding a BASE jumping accident that he was involved in and I was eager to hear it. He was jumping with three of his good military friends on October 25, 2014 when his lines got twisted very shortly after he jumped off the Roan Plateau in Rifle, Colorado. It was one of the last jumps of the season before weather rolled in and winter began to start. Hear all about his accident, his evacuation and how he's changing the way the BASE jumping culture looks at accidents within the sport. This podcast is produced by Ashley Saupe. For a week we were all wondering what happened, how they were going to be saved and how long they had to do it. The details that came out day by day were stunning. By now you've all heard the news. The sub imploded, instant death, cavalier CEO, little-to-no oversight… - - it was a recipe for disaster. Nicky and Manny make sure to go over those details. But another question comes up. WTF are billionaires spending their money on? This kinda thing never slows down an industry. Manny Brings up Ice Climbing and Heli-Skiing and BASE Jumping. But wonders, what's the reason behind that? What are you discovering? And Nicky can't stop but muddle over the numbers. $450Million Yacht? $48Million Mercedes? $1k to touch it?! Really? $15k to climb Mt Everest? What are you gonna do when you get up there? Most of this stuff looks pretty dangerous guys, so why eat the rich, just let them eat themselves! But anyways, you tell us! - What form of Extreme Tourism attracts you? - Should billionaires just GIVE their money to the scientists, and just stay home? - Would you rather see Zuckerberg vs Musk on UFC or WWE? Steph Davis has been a professional climber since 1991. But simply calling the Moab, Utah local a climber seems inadequate. From three years old, Davis was trained in the Suzuki Method on the piano. She practiced everyday, sometimes for hours a day, until she discovered a passion for climbing. The piano fell silent as climbing became her primary focus. In 2004, Davis became only the second woman to free climb El Capitan in one day. The following year she freed the formation's Salathe Wall—the first woman ever to do so. She's logged climbing achievements all over the world, and has confronted fear while free soloing walls such as the Diamond on Longs Peak. For Davis, climbing is about when to hold on, and when to let go. We talk about her evolution as an athlete—how she went from focusing exclusively on climbing to adding base jumping and wingsuit flying to her repertoire. She describes the sense of euphoria gained from free soloing, and why it can't be replicated. This episode is brought to you by The North Face. One thing I've learned about climbing over the years is that you never really know when something might go wrong, that human error and the randomness of nature are something we as climbers can't really avoid. So instead we prepare ourselves to deal with the unknown, to come equipped with the tools necessary both physical and mental to rescue either ourselves or others when things go wrong. Remember that story that was all over the news a few months ago, about a climber who had rescued a base jumper who crashed, hanging precariously on a cliff? Today we get to sit down with the climber herself, River Barry. We dive deep into the details of her heroic rescue on that fateful day and find out what we are all capable of when preparedness, training, and experience all come together.
