Episode 220 of the Doc and Jock Podcast special one. For the first time in a long time Doc Danny & Coach Joe got together in the same place to talk about the snatch balance how it's the MOST important movement on the planet. Olympic weightlifters use the snatch balance to improve their speed & strength into the bottom of the snatch. However it's probably one of the most beneficial lifts for life. If you look at the movement, the requirements of flexibility in the snatch balance are so high that if you can master the movements it what would normally be a ACL tear in sport and makes it a knee sprain. The positional strength requirement of the snatch balance translate to an elderly person who's slip in fall is just an embarrassing moment rather than it being a trip to the E.R. On this episode we talk about how to mobilize for the snatch balance, how to scale it and then how to make it perfect once you own the movement. Check out our accompanying video here https://goo.gl/A2cEWn

On Episode 218 of the Doc and Jock Podcast we catch up with Nick St. Louis of the Foot Collective. The Foot Collective is a group of Canadian physical therapists on a mission to help humans reclaim strong, functional and pain free feet through foot health education. Every human has 2 feet and most of those feet aren’t working like nature intended. Your feet form the foundation for your body – without a strong foundation we compensate and eventually run into problems. Most people Nick sees with dysfunctional (not working properly) feet don’t have foot pain. They have problems upstream – low back pain, hip imbalances, knee pain – and most of those problems are a result of a problem with their foundation. Spread the word to anyone you know and help create awareness of the importance of foot health. Telling friends and family about The Foot Collective means giving them the power to change their health and access quality information about their body for free. Check out more info on the Foot Collective and listen to their podcast here http://www.thefootcollective.com/

On Episode 215 of the Doc and Jock Podcast Doc Danny sits down to talk about chronic pain. Chronic pain can be a weird thing. Take someone with lower back for example: often times patients complain of chronic pain of the lower back and as an assessment Danny will ask the patient to bend over and touch their toes and their response is to FREAK OUT. However when they are leaving Danny's practice they'll have no problem hinging to get their purse/bag. The point is that often times the fear of pain is worse than the pain itself. On this episode Danny explains how to treat someone in this situation and help get them past their chronic pain.

On episode 212 of the Doc and Jock Podcast we sit down with the doctor of storytelling Andy Galpin to learn how to coach with empathy. Dr. Andy Galpin is a tenured Professor in the Center for Sport Performance at CSU Fullerton. He was born and raised in beautiful Rochester, WA. In addition to being one of the world's leading muscle physiologist he also co-founded the Barbell Shrugged podcast with his buddies Doug Larson, Mike Bledsoe & Chris Moore (RIP). On Episode Andy talks about understanding how to coach with empathy. Empathy is defined as "the ability to understand and share the feelings of another," often times in the world of strength & conditioning coaches judge other coaches methods and tactics without any context to understand the method or drill. Andy's recommendation is to think of 3 instances where the seemingly "wrong" action could be right. Typically if you do that you'll end up realizing that most of the time they aren't wrong. After the education on empathy we get into a discussion on Andy's new book Unplugged which aims to teach us how to evolve from technology to upgrade your fitness, performance & consciousness. If that sounds like a mouth full it is! For more on Sal check out his bio and cruise on over to Mind Pump Media! Sal was 14 years old when he touched his first weight and from that moment he was hooked. Growing up asthmatic, frequently sick and painfully skinny, Sal saw weightlifting as a way to change his body and his self-image. In the beginning, Sal’s body responded quickly to his training but then his gains slowed and then stopped altogether. Not one to give up easily, he began reading every muscle building publication he could get his hands on to find ways to bust through his plateau. He read Arnold’s Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding, Mentzer’s Heavy Duty, Kubrick’s Dinosaur Training, and every muscle magazine he could find; Weider’s Muscle and Fitness, Flex, Iron Man and even Muscle Media 2000. Each time he read about a new technique or methodology he would test it out in the gym. At age 18 his passion for the art and science of resistance training was so consuming that he decided to make it his profession and become a personal trainer. By 19 he was managing health clubs and by 22 he owned his own gym. After 17 years as a personal trainer he has dedicated himself to bringing science and TRUTH to the fitness industry.

You know that terrible feeling during a workout where your heart rate is out of control, you breathing is shallow and rapid and you feel like you are going to hyperventilate? What if there was a secret "hack" to getting around that? On Episode 206 of the Doc and Jock Podcast we are joined by the legendary Rob Wilson (for the 5th time) to talk about The Art Of Breathing during a CrossFit/high intensity workout. Just like most other things we do in the gym setting their is an optimal way to breath during exercise and those who master it have a distinct advantage over their competitions. Rob Wilson comes from a formal education in manual therapy with 15+ years of experience as both a practitioner and teacher. He resides in Virginia Beach, VA with his wife Thomi where they own and operate CrossFit Virginia Beach. In addition to working with the Power Speed Endurance team Rob is also a member of the world renowned MobilityWod staff under the direction of Dr. Kelly Starrett. Rob’s main sport background is youth martial arts including Jeet Kune Do (the philosophies of Bruce Lee), Judo, Muay Thai, and Maphiliindo Silat and Kali. Like many coastal kids Rob grew up surfing and skating as well and developed an affinity for the ocean and Nature at an early age. Rob Wilson is a passionate teacher to the core. Throughout the course of his career as a therapist one thing became abundantly clear; it’s better to teach a person to fish. Without education athletes are left to unknowingly repeat patterns of behavior that may not be pursuant to the actual desired outcome. That is to say the best remedy is often understanding. Rob’s journey is about developing a deeper understanding of human performance to better serve those who wish to actualize their potential.
